A Letter from
Our President
October 2013
My Dear Friends in Christ,
Pope Francis addressed the importance of Catholic education when he
received several students from Jesuitrun schools in Italy and Albania in
June 2013.
In his address, Pope Francis wrote
about how education should be more
than just a place to expand intellect –
that it should also be a place to learn
compassion and magnanimity. He
stressed that school should be a place
to develop the whole child – mind,
body, and spirit – and that teachers should try unique ways to reach students.
As you read the 2013 Annual Report of the Catholic Education Foundation, you
will recognize that the Holy Father’s words are realized daily throughout the
Catholic schools and parish catechetical programs of the Diocese of Joliet. From
the many cards and letters of thanks received from our students who have received
scholarship assistance from the Foundation, it is evident that our children are
receiving Christ’s Gospel message along with an exceptional academic education.
Indeed, our schools and parishes are developing the whole child in the image and
likeness of Jesus Christ.
May the road
rise up to meet you.
May the wind
always be at your back.
May the sun
shine warm upon your face,
And rains fall soft
upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you
in the palm of His hand.
I am thankful for the abundance that God has given to us and to the generosity that
is shown through the gifts of our benefactors. Whether you have supported the
annual Scholarship Campaign for the first time this year or have been a consistent
donor for a decade, you have helped develop a child’s mind. Whether you have
created a sophisticated estate plan, or simply composed a Will remembering your
favorite school or parish through a bequest, you have helped developed a child’s
body. Whether you were able to financially support the work of the Foundation
or instead offered fervent prayer for its outreach, you have helped develop a child’s
spirit. Through your stewardship of time, talent and treasure, you have demonstrated a sense of compassion and magnanimity in your own faith community.
I pray that God will continue to shine His blessings upon you for your prayers and
generosity.
May God bless you.

Dear Friends of the Catholic Education Foundation,
It’s about the Kids!
On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Catholic
Education Foundation (CEF), it is my pleasure to
present our 2013 Annual Report. The CEF has been
successful in spreading the word of our vital ministry to parishes, donors and the business community. Similarly, the work of the CEF
continues to grow because the requests for student scholarships are ever-increasing
each year. The message we spread and the assistance we provide is indeed, “all about
the kids!”
Since 2003 the CEF has distributed $12 million in scholarships to grade school and
high school students whose families have demonstrated a significant financial need.
This year we awarded $1.8 million to 1,600 students who might otherwise not have
received a Catholic education. The CEF fills a tremendous void through its investment
in our ‘CEF Scholars.’ The financial awards ordinarily represent up to 20 percent of the
tuition costs. Additionally, partnerships with individual donors who have created separate need-based scholarship funds have even covered tuition costs up to 40 percent.
The CEF proudly celebrates its accomplishments, but we also recognized our inability
to fund hundreds of other student scholarships this year because of a lack of funding.
Through our financial aid programs, the CEF has the opportunity to help schools significantly increase their enrollment. Currently, there is room for 4,100 additional students throughout our 54 schools. You can help us in our efforts! We encourage your
participation and welcome your partnership by contributing to the annual Scholarship
Campaign or one of the other giving options listed in this Annual Report.
I remain truly grateful to our dedicated board members whose valuable input and
financial support has helped propel the CEF to new heights. This includes a record
amount of total assets, a record number of students receiving aid in a single year, and
higher award amounts for grade school students.
Thank you for celebrating 2013 with us by reviewing in this report the lives that have
been changed by the generosity of our donors. On behalf of the Board of Directors, I
express our deep gratitude and appreciation to all who have supported the vital work
of the Catholic Education Foundation.
Sincerely,
Patrick C. Lynch
Chairman of the Board

A Message from our Superintendent and Executive Director
Dear CEF Supporters and Friends,
We celebrate 2012-13 with a reflection on the tremendous
amount of activity surrounding the Catholic Education Foundation (CEF) last fiscal year. Of course, no true celebration
can occur without including the valuable assistance from the
volunteers who represent the CEF Board of Directors. Beginning with 100% of our board financially supporting our annual Scholarship Campaign, each member was instrumental in
helping the CEF realize its numerous successes which resulted
in young lives that are being changed and given hope for the
future.
The highlight of our year was the ability to increase by 40
percent the individual scholarship amounts for CEF grade
school students and still disburse 1,600 elementary and secondary awards totaling nearly $1.8 million. Similarly, our funding
partner, the Kazma Family Foundation again provided generous
funding for another 25 new high school “Kazma Scholars.”
At the same time a committee of board members created a
funding policy that equitably allocates our steadily-increasing
pool of Hispanic scholarships to this rapidly-growing population in Will, Kendall, Grundy, DuPage and Kankakee Counties.
This growth is due in large part to several new funds that donors
have created and restricted for this purpose such as the McShane Family Hispanic Scholarship.
More recently, we celebrated Catholic education at our 3rd annual Sounds of Sacred Music which featured the school choirs
from St. Isaac Jogues, Hinsdale and St. Michael, Wheaton who
joined the Benet Academy Madrigal Choir in the chapel of
Sacred Heart Monastery for a memorable evening. Over 150
CEF donors and friends gathered before the concert at a VIP
Reception and were recognized for their generosity toward our
CEF Scholars.
4
Finally, another board member is responsible for the inception
of the Move Your Feet walk-a-thon that is scheduled to be held
later this month at all diocesan grade schools on Friday, October 18 to raise awareness for Catholic education and the charitable works of the CEF.
A momentum has been created with the CEF and we are grateful to the board members who are responsible for helping to
carry out these programs.
Thank you for your generous support through your prayers and
financial support of the Catholic Education Foundation.
Sincerely,
Rev. John Belmonte, S.J., Ph.D.

Executive Director
Kazma Family Foundation
As President of the Kazma Family Foundaiton, Leigh-Anne Kazma handles all the daily
activity of this philanthropic organization but it is hardly a lonely business.
In true ‘family’ fashion, her parents Gerry and Margaret Kazma also take great pride in
interacting with over 100 scholarship recipients attending seven Diocese of Joliet high
schools.
The Catholic Education Foundation is proud to partner with such wonderful
examples of Christian stewards and true leaders in the philanthropic community.
The gift of Catholic education through the Kazma Family will continue to provide
untold benefits in the faith lives of hundreds of diocesan high school students for
generations to come.

The McShane Family Hispanic Scholarship Fund ensured that 16 students were able to register at a
Catholic school in the Diocese of Joliet this school year. Steve and Kathy McShane and daughter,
Erin Lacroix are members of St. Isaac Jogues Parish, Hinsdale, and Steve is founder and CEO of
Willowbrook based Midtronics, Inc.
Special Education Needs Fund
“It helps to be personally involved and a daily witness to the
improvement in these students. We are most grateful to our
family and friends who have contributed to the Catholic
Education Foundation and have restricted their gifts to
support this special education program.” (Patrick Coleman)
Patrick and Tracy Coleman began this fund with the
Catholic Education Foundation upon seeing positive
results in their son, Joey, who is in 3rd grade at All Saints
Catholic Academy (ASCA) this year. Since Joey was in
first grade, the Coleman Family had retained and provided
a Special Education Aide for Joey.
As a family they have tirelessly raised money since 2011 to
personally fund the cost of special education staff so that
other students can benefit from the progress they have
seen in their own son. The long term goal is to provide
funding for a special education teacher at ASCA as well
as multiple aides to work with three to five special needs
children at All Saints Catholic Academy.

Benefits to Our Donors
The Catholic Education Foundation welcomes cash
contributions, bequests, and tax-wise planned gifts of
all denominations. The Foundation, in return, offers
numerous benefits to our donors:
Guarantee of Professional Management
The Board of Directors guarantees sound professional
management of all funds entrusted to our wise stewardship.
Frequent Reporting to Donors
Monthly, quarterly and/or annual reporting is initiated as well as a year-end, independent audit to
guarantee full disclosure of Foundation accounts and
activities. Our most recent financial audit is available
for viewing on the web (www.dioceseofjoliet.org/edfoundation) and is open to public review throughout
the year in our offices during normal business hours.
Pursuant to IRS regulations, the audit can also be
mailed upon request.
CEF MEMORIAL PROGRAM
There is no specific amount required in order to give a CEF
Memorial. You may send in any denomination of gift and the
CEF will acknowledge it as well as notify the
decedent's family of your memorial donation.
This memorial concept could be used in addition to, or in
lieu of, flowers. Periodically, the CEF will publish the names
of memorial gift donors and recipients in
“Christ is Our Hope” magazine.
In Loving Memory
With Deepest Sympathy for Your Loss
and Heartfelt Joy upon Her Arrival!
Memorialize a Loved One
Often donors wish to remember a loved one, family
heritage or particular cause by naming a specific fund,
which serves as an everlasting remembrance.
Gifts that Last Forever
Various planned giving vehicles enable a gift to work
forever by using only the income while the principal
remains uninhibited.
The Donor's Favorite Charity
Funds can be earmarked for a special beneficiary
or be unrestricted to serve the general purposes of
the Catholic Education Foundation. Similarly, many
planned gift vehicles are open-ended, and the donor
may add to the corpus at a later date.
Tax Advantage to Donor
All contributions are accepted with the intention of
providing optimal income tax deductions for the donor, and liquid assets are invested to produce maximum income for the charitable cause.

resources to allow children in need to attend elementary and
secondary Catholic schools throughout the Diocese of Joliet.
To meet this goal, the Foundation educates the general public
of numerous tax advantaged gift vehicles, and works with the
donor to determine an effective and appropriate plan to match
their specific charitable intent. The seven counties of the Diocese
of Joliet are blessed to have forty-eight elementary schools and
seven high schools, each striving to bring the word of God to
children in a Catholic faith-based environment.
The Foundation directly distributes hundreds of need-based
scholarships and educational program grants each year.
The Foundation is managed by a Board of Directors, which includes both clergy and lay leaders from the diocese.
