Summerfest is the event that brings our community together. We look forward to Summerfest every year as a time
when citizens set aside their differences and gather together
to enjoy some family-friendly Summer fun.
With a wide variety of events, activities, and offerings,
there is always something for everyone in Orem the second
week of June.
This year’s Summerfest theme is “All Together” and is a
nod to the All-Together Playground that will be built in
September 2016 with donations from local businesses and
individuals as well as money from the Orem CARE tax.
Playground construction will begin September 5th and
will involve thousands of committed volunteers over a 7-day
period to build Utah County’s first public playground where
kids of all ability levels can play together and reap the social,
physical, and cognitive benefits of inclusive play.
While we’re working to make our playgrounds more inclusive, we’re also focused on making our city that way as well.
We’ve dedicated more resources to getting citizens involved
in the governing process and are always looking for new
ways to include residents in what we do at City Hall. If you

This year Orem’s Summerfest will be an exciting time.
The theme is “All Together” celebrating the future building
of Orem’s “All Together Playground” for children with
disabilities, that all can enjoy.
I am excited to be part of the wonderful celebration that
is Summerfest. I love the Grand Parade, which this year
will honor Jimmer and Whitney Fredette as the Grand
Marshalls. I love participating in the parade and meeting
with all of the wonderful children, parents, and families
that we have in our great city.
Just as exciting is the carnival in the park, the entertainment in the outdoor amphitheater, the cool car show,
the kids crafts, the baby contest, and this year an evening
of storytelling and the Jimmer Ferdette Shootout raising
funds for the All Together Playground, as well as many
other events.
It is always wonderful to enjoy the summer weekend
participating in these events as well as strolling through the
park visiting the booths, eating the fun foods, and seeing
the great fireworks show at night.

In fact Orem’s Summerfest has one of the best fireworks
shows around the valley.
I appreciate also the national day of prayer and the time
to honor our country and our flag.
I appreciate the freedoms we enjoy in our great land and
city. It truly is a time for us to have the
opportunity to come together and have a week of fun and
enjoyment in the summertime in wonderful
and exciting Orem.
I appreciate our city staff and firemen, and policemen
who help us to have a great and safe event.
We have strong families, strong neighborhoods, and a
strong community in Orem. Our people and families give
our great city its strength and vibrancy. Lets help each
other to enjoy this year’s Summerfest together.
I am excited to get together this year, to celebrate, and to
have fun one with another.

2016 OREM SUMMERFEST GRAND MARSHALS
The Jimmermania contagion first infected Utah Valley in 2007, Jimmer’s freshman year
on the BYU basketball team, when he averaged seven points per game.
By March 2010, Jimmer’s senior season when he averaged 29 points per game, Jimmermania had spread not only throughout Utah, but across the country. Jimmer was trending
on Twitter and James Taft “Jimmer” Fredette was officially a national celebrity.
The NCAA Division I basketball player was named the National Player of the Year and
was drafted on June 23, 2011 as the No. 10 overall pick by the Sacramento Kings.
To complete the fairytale story, Jimmer married former BYU cheerleader Whitney Wonnacott on June 1, 2012 in the Denver LDS Temple.
To date, Jimmer has played for four NBA teams: Sacramento Kings, Chicago Bulls, New
Orleans Pelicans and the New York Knicks.

Orem Summerfest Celebration.
This community

them over the
years, and they

WHAT IS AN
ALL-ABILITIES
PLAYGROUND?
Children with disabilities often
cannot play on a standard playground and therefore cannot
take advantage of the amazing
benefits that play provides.
An all-abilities playground is
a space that provides inclusive
play opportunities for children
of all ages and abilities. These
types of playgrounds are designed to promote the healthy
development of all children’s
physical, social, cognitive, and
sensory abilities.
An all-abilities playground
in Orem will give all children
in Utah County the chance to
play, grow, and learn side-byside. The cost of the playground itself is approximately
$665,000. Both public and
private donations are needed
to do this project right.
ALL-TOGETHER
SHOOTOUT
On June 10th at 6 PM Jimmer
will shoot 100 3-point shots at
Orem High School, allowing
individuals and businesses to
pledge for each shot he can
hit. More information about
the All-Together Shootout can
be found at www.alltogethershootout.com. This is a partnership between the City of
Orem and the Fredette Family
Foundation, with money being
shared between the two, but

this is accomplished we can

Come and enjoy the musical stylings of GENTRI: The Gentlemen
Trio at the Orem City Center Park Stage, Friday, June 10, at 8:30 p.m.
GENTRI was established in June 2014 and is comprised of three
highly trained tenors: Brad Robins, Casey Elliott and Bradley Quinn
Lever.
Pioneering a signature sound that can only be described as “Cinematic Pop,” the music of GENTRI is transfused with lush, epic
orchestrations and rich, dynamic three-part harmonies.
GENTRI’s self-titled, debut EP was released March 31, 2015. The
record spent 10 consecutive weeks in the Top 10 on two different
Billboard charts, including three weeks at No. 2 on both the Classical
and Classical Crossover charts.
On the heels of their first album release, the Gents debuted their
first music video to their original hit single, “Dare,” which made international headlines on news outlets around the world, including ABC
World News, NBC Nightly News and Inside Edition.
The Gents recently released their full-length album, RISE, which
included 8 new GENTRI original songs as well as two covers. It
debuted at #3 on Billboard’s Classical and Classical Crossover Charts,
right behind John Williams for Star Wars: The Force Awakens and
Andrea Bocelli. Critics of RISE call it “strong, brave, and inspiring” as
well as “anything but boring.”
GENTRI has performed with world-renowned talent, including
international tenor sensation Alfie Boe, Tony Award-winning vocalist
Idina Menzel, and legendary rock band Journey at the Stadium of
Fire, the nation’s largest Fourth of July firework celebration. Other
notable events include performing at the Governor of Utah’s annual
gala, as well as performing the national anthem for the Utah Jazz and
the San Diego Padres.
Follow the Gents on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Periscope (@

An Evening of Stories
JUNE 8, SCERA SHELL, 7:30 PM
Timpanogos Storytelling, Orem Summerfest, and SCERA Center for
the Arts are partnering to bring Orem a special night of storytelling as
part of this year’s Summerfest events.
The event will be held on Wednesday, June 8 at the SCERA Shell
Amphitheater.
The program features two of the most popular storytellers in America, Bill Harley and Tim Lowry. Bill is a two-time Grammy-winning
musician and author who is a longtime audience favorite at storytelling
festivals across the country. Tim Lowry’s Southern charm and funny
stories blew audiences away during his first visit to the Timpanogos
Storytelling Festival in 2015.
Tickets are $5 a person and are available at Timpfest.org. The program starts at 7:30 pm. The gates will open at 6:30 pm and live preshow
music starts at 6:45 pm.
Summerfest committee member Wally Harkness said of the event,
“Storytelling and Orem go hand in hand. This year we wanted to highlight that amazing relationship with a special Summerfest concert. To
be able to offer two performers of this caliber is a dream come true. This
event is perfect for audiences of all ages, everyone will find something
they’ll enjoy.”
Bill Harley is a two-time
Grammy award-winning artist, recipient of
a Lifetime Achievement
Award from the Rhode
Island Council for the
Humanities, and an NPR
commentator.

competitions will take place at the Orem Senior Friendship Center. The children’s division
will take place at 1 pm, and the adult division
will take place at 6 pm. The cost to attend is
$5.00 for every person five and older, and all
funds will be donated to Orem City’s “All-Together Playground,” and Children’s Miracle

Taesha Sa’u is the oldest in his
family is continually sharing his
talents, from his friendly disposition to his love for the arts, to
his excellent grades. His singing
voice has brought him opportunities from National Honor Choir,
State Honor Choir two years in
a row, as well as choir student
of the year. In seventh grade he
sang with the UVU Chamber choir
and the Utah Valley Orchestra
in the opera “Elijah.” He loves
participating in plays at school,
Hale Theater and Center Stage.
He serves on student council.
Stevie Sheen is the oldest
of four. She loves accelerated softball and played on the
girls basketball team for Orem
Junior. Stevie has had a 4.0 GPA
throughout elementary and junior
high. Stevie recently enrolled
into UCAS where she is excited
to start high school and plans
to graduate with a high school
diploma and an associate’s degree through UVU. Stevie has her
sights set on the medical field.
Stevie has a natural passion to be
the best she can be and is very
compassionate toward others.
Glory Thomas is just like the
meaning of her name. She is
always looking to serve and uplift
others. Glory was the Ghost of
Christmas Past in her school’s
musical. She is also president
of Encore, the advanced choir
at Oak Canyon. Her Reflections
dance, “Shoulders,” goes on to
state. As a straight-A student,
a group leader in the Science
Demo team, and a violinist in the
Chamber Orchestra, she tries to
always include others. She is excited for Timpanogos so she can
“spread the joy” there, too.
Riley Kinsey enjoyed being on
stage crew and in the Bravo class,
as well as Spanish and seminary
at Oak Canyon. He is the oldest
child and also the oldest grandchild. He makes everyone smile
with jokes and funny voices.
Riley is on the honor roll, plays
football for Timpanogos, and
worked as an AV Tech for the
junior high. He’s willing to help
out whenever needed. He enjoys
riding his motorcycle, guitar,
drawing and yo-yo skills, having
taken 10th place in the Utah yoyo competition last spring.
Elizabeth Vogel has ambitions
of world travel, preferably with
a backpack. Her family spends
time in Mazatlan where Elizabeth practices boogie boarding
and the Spanish she has been
learning since first grade. She
has been on the Lakeridge track
team for three years and plans
to run at Mountain View. She has
participated in the Share-A-Smile
triathlon. She enjoys gardening,
hiking, art, piano, oboe and reading. She earned awards at the
Model United Nations and Model
European Union.
Preston Zundel is known for
being kind, loving and good-natured. Preston wants to become
a falconer with hopes of having
a Red-Tailed Hawk. Preston has
a rare, chronic, white blood cell
disease called Eosinophilic Colitis
(EC), requiring the placement of
an NG tube for nutrition. Excessive sick days and medical appointments have lead to missed
days of school, requiring Preston
to work harder to maintain his
grades and dreams for college.
Preston perseveres and looks for
ways to serve and uplift others.
JJ Estrada is finishing ninth
grade at Canyon View Junior
High. He has four sisters and is
the youngest of the family. JJ
is friendly, polite, hardworking
and one of the most important
traits is his kindness to everyone
especially to the elderly. JJ enjoys
traveling, skateboarding and
spending time with his family. JJ
has many goals in life, and one
of them is to pursue a career in
journalism.He hopes to one day
become someone important in
pop culture but most importantly
to his community.
Rosa Ochoa participates in extra
curricular activities after school
such as FCCLA. She received second place in Parliamentary Procedure and gets to go to San Diego
for nationals. Her favorite subjects
are ceramics, foods and 3D art.
She is bilingual, and in her free
time she loves to read and listen
to music. She is going to Timpanogos High School and hoping to
graduate with a 4.0. Rosa is joyful
that she lives in the state of Utah,
which is full of opportunities and
where she has a community that
is like a family to her.

All-Together Playground
JUNE 7 - 11, 2016
Play is the work of children. Play
helps kids learn, grow, and develop.
In Orem, we believe that all children,
regardless of ability level, deserve the
opportunity to play together.
That’s why Habitat for Humanity,
Kids on the Move, United Way
of Utah County, the City of Orem,
and many local businesses including
Vivint and Intermountain Healthcare, have teamed up to build the
“All-Together Playground” at the
City Center Park. This will be the
first all-inclusive playground in Utah
County.
The All-Together Playground will
be built with an army of volunteers
over an eight-day period beginning
September 5th. Those interested in
participating in this historic community effort are invited to visit www.
alltogetherplayground.com to make a
donation and sign up for Build Week.
With your help we will build a sensory-rich experience that will bless
the lives of all Orem’s children.

Chief Gary Giles
Orem Police Chief

2016
As guardians of society, police personnel have a
very difficult job, especially in today’s day and age.
In one of his famous broadcasts, What are Policemen Made of?, the late Paul Harvey said of police
officers;
“What is a policeman made of? He, of all
men (and women), is once the most needed
and the most unwanted. He’s a strangely
nameless creature who is “sir” to his face and
“fuzz” to his back.
He must be such a diplomat that he can
settle differences between individuals so that
each will think he won. But...If the policeman is
neat, he’s conceited; if he’s careless, he’s a bum. If he’s
pleasant, he’s flirting; if not, he’s a grouch.
He must make an instant decision which would
require months for a lawyer to make.
www.summerfest.orem.org
But...If he hurries, he’s careless; if he’s deliberate, he’s lazy. He must be first to an accident and
infallible with his diagnosis. He must be able to start
breathing, stop bleeding, tie splints and, above all, be
sure the victim goes home without a limp. Or
expect to be sued.
The Orem Police Department is comprised of nearly 140 of the best men and
women around. Police officers, dispatchers,
and a variety of support personnel spend their
days serving the citizens and visitors to the
City of Orem. They are the most professional
people I have ever met and I am humbled to be
able to work among them and consider myself one of
them. I only hope the community of Orem is able to
see the brave, courageous, kind, caring, and honorable
people who work for the Orem Police Department.
Captain Ryan Peterson
Orem Fire Battalion Chief
The Orem Fire Department was founded in 1947 and
originally staffed with volunteers. The Fire Department
has grown tremendously since that time and has developed in a full-time, professional organization.
We currently have four fire stations that are staffed
with a minimum of four personnel, 24/7/365.
Each station has a Fire Captain, Fire Engineer
and a minimum of two Firefighter/Paramedics. We are a dual-role department, whereas
our personnel are certified, and operate as,
firefighters and paramedics. Our personnel
hold additional certifications related to firefighting and EMS. We have several personnel who
are specially trained in Hazardous Materials, Rope Rescue,
Trench Rescue, Confined Space and Structural Collapse.
The men and women of the Orem Fire Department
are committed to excellence in everything we do. We
recognize that the citizens we serve are our customers.
We are committed to providing the highest level of
professional, compassionate and exceptional service at
all times.
Public relations and public education are
paramount to our success. We conduct public
relations events weekly at local schools,
religious organizations, birthday parties and
other events as requested. Our firefighters
thoroughly enjoy interacting with the public
and teaching about our profession, and providing education to our customers.
The Orem Fire Department is committed to Building
a Better Orem through excellent customer service, and
in partnership with our citizens.

Pursue your
Dreams
MESSAGE FROM MISS OREM 2015, JESSE CRAIG
For this past year, I have been able to host
and attend every type of event as I represented the city of Orem. Ribbon cuttings,
egg hunts, self-esteem presentations for
school, and even hot air balloon rides have
been a part of my reign. With the help of
the Orem Summerfest board and the Orem
City Council, I was able to implement the
“Orem’s Got Talent!” tradition, and host
a Christmas breakfast for the community.
We were able to raise more than $1,000 for
the Children’s Miracle Network hospitals
and “All-Together Playground” through
those two events, and I’m excited to see how
the traditions continue for years to come.
Another project that I was able to chair
throughout Orem was collecting unwanted
shoes to benefit Burkina Faso, Africa. Orem
collected an astounding 3,470 pairs of shoes

for this project, and I could not be prouder.
The advice I would like to give to any
girl aspiring to become Miss Orem – or to
attain any leadership position – is to fully
commit. Instead of wishing, start pursuing.
Tomorrow may not come, and the longer
you put off that application or phone call,
the longer it takes for you to achieve your
goals. And when you do achieve your goal,
do NOT stop there! For me, Miss Orem
was not about one night of competition, it
was about finding ways to improve the city,
help others, and better myself, every single
day of my reign.
Thank you Orem city, for giving me this
opportunity to represent you. It truly has
been a privilege, and I am excited to see
what the future holds in store for the best
city in Utah.
