I
am frequently asked for my opinion
on the future of medicine. I respond,
to my way of thinking, the key lies
in energy.
Within the subject of energy I have
come to the conclusion that innate energy is
something quite special. Quite a few years ago
now, I was in the United States and was invited
to attend a seminar at which a lecturer was
due to speak on the subject of innate energy.
I must admit that I was intrigued by this at
the time. I considered ‘innate energy’ to be a
rather unusual expression, but only when I sat
down to listen to this lecture did I understand
what this phrase referred to. Like this lecturer,
I too have discovered over the years that innate
energy in man is often inexplicable, as it works
in mysterious ways.
The lecturer claimed that by the use of his
thumbs only, he was able to restore energy. By
studying the law of motion he had learned how
the positive and negative energy flow could be
used to control cause and effect.
Energy and Balance
Man expresses energy with every tick of the
clock – even by inhalation. Every inhalation
must be followed by exhalation or the correct
sequence of the principle is broken. In their
efforts to restore harmony, the importance
of this innate energy is known to the early
acupuncturists practising so many centuries
ago. Man’s energy within himself, and its
structural balance with the earth’s gravity and
the finer fields of nature’s energy, should be
understood by man as part of the universe in
which he is placed.

We know that every molecule and atom
in the universe – animate or inanimate – is in
constant vibration. Each mineral and each life
cell in man or any animal vibrates and has its
own frequency and wavelength. We have also
come to the conclusion that energy vibration,
or cosmic energy vibration, has a profound
influence on our lives. We are in constant
contact with cosmic forces and these energies
are extremely powerful. The complete identity
of man consists of body, mind and soul. Each
human body cell is composed of atoms and
has a nucleus of solar electricity which
dominates its magnetic force. This force is
not easily understood and sometimes reacts
in a totally different manner to what we may
have expected.
We may have the ability to stimulate
or to subdue energies in the body, but we do
not always receive the right indications as
to whether the energies that exist in every
organ, tissue, muscle or bone are in direct or
indirect contact with the human body. Early
acupuncturists were aware of this centuries ago
and realised that by using needles on certain
energy points, endorphins and encephalins
could be released to diminish pain. In the
same way, however, they could also harmonise
energy and enhance the innate energy of man,
that energy for which we have no satisfactory
explanation, as the phrase indicates “innate
energy”, i.e something that exists naturally
rather than an acquired attribute.
Occasionally, we experience how this
innate energy may respond to being pointed
in the right direction in a way which is totally
beyond our expectations. This happened to me with a Multiple Sclerosis
patient who had been reduced to life in a wheelchair. After I had used
certain acupuncture energy points, this patient fully recovered the use of
her legs. Perhaps I had chosen an energy point that was specific to this
individual, but the proof was there to be seen. The innate energy had
thus been allowed to flow freely through this patient’s legs and once her
muscles had regained their strength she was able to walk again.
Energy centres exist on the surface of the skin and through these
centres one can endeavour to heal or stimulate these inherent or innate
universal energies. This can be done with needles; it can be done with
the hands; or it can be done with a simple touch.
Cosmic power is the power of the universe and it is of the utmost
importance that a balance of this energy in the human body is retained.
Whether or not we can scientifically explain this fact is of secondary
importance to the knowledge that vibrations cause energy. Vibrations
are soaked up in the same way as a sponge absorbs water, and no
matter how careful we are, our conscious system will accept vibration,
just as our body accepts the food that enters our stomach. Vibration in
a negative sense can lead to an imbalance in innate energy. In my book
Do Miracles Exist? I have mentioned several such examples.
Power of the Mind
You may be surprised to learn that even our thoughts can alter the
energy flow and I have sometimes proved this to the sceptics with the
help of Kirlian photography. Encourage a patient to think a positive
thought and then take a photograph of the energy outflow. Then
compare this picture to a photograph taken after a negative thought
and you will see how disarranged and disturbed the energy flow has
become. With respect to this subject it is worth knowing that our
thought faculties are divided into three separate parts: objective,
subjective and subconscious. Our thinking is transferred from the
universal mind to three divisions of our brain. Our thoughts, actions
and deeds depend greatly upon the action of our conscious system
– upon our brain. If the organisms of the body are not functioning
properly, they interfere with the conscious system of our brain, thus
causing heavy and sluggish breathing. In order to have a clear
brain, then, we need clear action. We must make sure that the body
is functioning properly and free from aches and pains. Our body, soul
and spirit should be in good balance. Unfortunately, this is the case
with only a few of us.
Good Vibrations
Energy vibration positively helps the innate energy to flow more freely
and without interruption. All life is energy; all energy is vibration and
vibration, in turn, is energy. These are principal facts in the universe.
Every vibration is a movement of something in a certain direction at a
certain rate. Therefore, if there is a disturbance in our innate energy
flow, even a touch in the right place can solve certain real problems.
Tissue vibration can cause the subconscious mind to make all the
tissues of the body subject to similar vibrations.
This constitutes not only a practical approach to the patient, it
is a mechanical stimulus to the patient’s body energy as a field of
energy. How easily this innate energy can be disturbed has recently
become apparent from the results of tests on people who spend too
much time sitting in front of a word processor or computer screen. It
is now a recognised fact that doing so can cause a great disruption to
the balance of energy in the human body.
We also see this effect in people who live near power stations and
again, recent research has indicated that other forms of radiation, such
as microwaves or radio frequencies can be just a dangerous.
For sensitive individuals, a Voll test or a Vega test, for example, is
invaluable for measuring the differences in body energy fields in such
cases. It is most important that you are fully aware of the possible risks
attached to such working conditions.
An imbalanced energy flow that affects the innate energy can be
corrected. We know that the body is not perfect and we also know that
the environment we live in today requires us to pay more attention to
such factors than was previously the case.
“Energy centres exist on the surface of the skin and
through these centres one can endeavour to heal or
stimulate these inherent or innate universal energies.
This can be done with needles; it can be done with the
hands; or it can be done with a simple touch.”

4th April
t’s difficult to imagine but Jan de Vries has just celebrated his
50th year in Healthcare. From his early days in Pharmacy
back in Holland, Jan de Vries has driven the complementary
medicine movement forward following his opportunistic
meeting with the Swiss Naturopath Alfred Vogel.
To commemorate this milestone Jan published his third biography
in which he outlined his fascinating and sometimes challenging life
in complementary medicine. For most people 50 years would be a
signal to take things easy, but for Jan its just another day in the clinic.
He is already planning his next year’s calendar of clinic dates, lecture
venues and contemplating his next book.

nzymatic Therapy’s L-Theanine product (Suntheanine)
has been selected as one of Supplement Watch’s “Top
Products of 2006” in part for its good value as a pure LTheanine product. Providing 100mg of the Suntheanine brand
of L-Theanine, the only form to have undergone any significant
study, it is the only brand of theanine that SupplementWatch
recommends.
Studies show L-Theanine supplementation results in a shift of
brain wave patterns away from a predominance of “beta” waves (those
associated with tension, stress, and anxiety) toward a higher output of
“alpha” waves (associated with relaxed alertness). Additional studies
show a clear reduction in stress levels and an increase in dopamine
production (dopamine is one of the “feel good” neurotransmitters) by
the brain. If less stress and feeling good weren’t enough of a reason
to try L-Theanine, there is also evidence in humans for L-Theanine
to help reduce blood pressure and also to promote more restful
sleep patterns. Although L-Theanine does not induce drowsiness (as
valerian or melatonin might do), its relaxation effects are sufficient to
help people fall asleep faster (when they are ready to sleep) and sleep
deeper (thus waking more rested with fewer hours of sleep). There are
no safety issues or side effects associated with L-Theanine when used
as directed as a dietary supplement.

More reasons to take omega-3 oils
ncreased levels of vitamin B12 may reduce the rate of
age-related cognitive decline and dementia, suggests a
new study published in the American Journal of Clinical
Nutrition. The research from the University of Michigan,
followed 1405 older Mexican Americans and found that
increased levels of the amino acid homocysteine doubled
the risk of dementia or cognitive impairment.
The study showed that higher levels of B12 were associated
with lower homocysteine levels, adding to previous studies
reporting that B12 may be more important than the other B
vitamins for reducing the risk of dementia. During the study
elevated homocysteine levels increased the risk of developing
dementia by 136 per cent. The risk of cognitive decline further
increased in subjects with both low vitamin B-12 and elevated
homocysteine concentrations. It is well accepted that Alzheimer’s
is the most common form of dementia and currently affects over
13 million people worldwide. By the year 2047, the prevalence
of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is expected to quadruple; maybe it’s
time to start dosing up on vitamin B12!
ncreased intakes of omega-3 fatty acids may cut the risk
of colorectal cancer in men by a whopping 66 per cent,
but only in men not taking aspirin, suggests new research.
The work published in the journal Cancer Epidemiology
Biomarkers & Prevention, suggests that omega-3 fatty acids
may inhibit biochemical process known as the omega-6
arachidonic acid (AA) cascade.
This process has been linked to cancer formation. Metabolism
of fatty acids produces compounds called prostaglandins. These can
be either pro- or anti-inflammatory. The prostaglandins derived
from omega-3 fatty acids are said to be anti-inflammatory and may
protect against the development of cancer, while prostaglandins
derived from omega-6 fatty acids, like AA, are proposed to be proinflammatory. When scientists examined a group of men who were
not taking aspirin, men with the highest blood levels of omega-3
fatty acids were associated with a significant 66 per cent reduced
risk of colorectal cancer. The study adds to a growing body of
science linking omega-3 from flax oil and fatty fish consumption
to a reduced risk of colorectal cancer, although more research is
necessary.

elenium supplements may reduce the risk of heart
disease by inhibiting the oxidation of LDL (“bad”)
cholesterol, suggests a small study from Italy. Writing in
the journal Nutrition, Metabolism and Cardiovascular Diseases
the Italian researchers report that 14 healthy subjects taking
a daily selenium supplement did not experience significant
increases in LDL modified by the damaging process known
as oxidation, compared to a two per cent increase observed
before selenium supplements were started.
The researchers reported that, compared to presupplementation, ten days of selenium use was associated with a
reduction of after-meal increases in LDL oxidation – a process
known to be associated with arterial disease. Interestingly, European
selenium levels have been falling since the EU imposed levies on
wheat imports from the US, where soil selenium levels are high.
As a result, average intake of selenium in the UK has fallen from
60 to 34 micrograms per day, leading to calls from some to enrich
soil and fertilizers with selenium to boost public consumption since
the EU itself has set its recommended daily intake at 65mcg! The
study used supplements containing 100mcg of selenium yeast. Many
supplements are available but it is advisable not to take more that
400mcg of selenium per day. Toxicity has been noted at daily intakes
exceeding 900mcg.
e can now send you a special self test kit to help you
find out if you are really in the menopause or not.
This may sound rather odd but for many women
the symptoms can be very vague and non-specific. Trying to
get an appointment with the GP can be difficult and you may
not get a test to confirm your hormonal state even if you do!
Our new urine self test kit is fast and accurate. It tests your urine
for traces of the hormone known as follicle stimulating hormone
(FSH). This is released from a small gland in the brain in response
to falling levels of oestrogen. The menopause is characterised by
low oestrogen production as the ovaries stop working. In response
the pituitary gland pumps up the FSH levels. Our test can detect this
increased FSH output as it is excreted naturally in the urine.
If you feel that your irregular periods, night sweats, sleep
problems and upset moods could be a sign of the menopause you
can now do your own check up, interpret your symptoms and take
control!

Bone booster
agnesium supplements taken during adolescence, a
key time for bone formation, boosted bone health in
120 girls in the America. The research suggests that
the mineral could have long-term benefits. An estimated 35
per cent of a mature adult’s peak bone mass is built-up during
puberty. Any disruption to bone growth at this time can have
detrimental effects on long term skeletal health and peak bone
mass may never be achieved.
Results of a one-year study published recently in The Journal
of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, indicate that regular
use of magnesium supplements during this important age could
significantly improve bone mineral density, and could have benefits
later in life concerning osteoporosis. The researchers studied 120
healthy Caucasian girls aged eight to 14 with daily magnesium intake
less than 220 mg, and assigned them to either a daily magnesium
supplement (300 mg) or placebo for 12 months. At the end of the
study, bone mineral content significantly increased in the hips of the
girls in the magnesium supplement group, compared to placebo,
while slight but non-significant increases were also observed in the
lumbar spine bone mineral content.
Dietary sources of magnesium include green, leafy vegetables,
meats, starches, grains and nuts, and milk. Earlier dietary surveys
show that a large portion of adults do not meet the RDA for
magnesium (320 mg per day for women and 420 mg per day for
men) suggesting that supplements may play an important role in
bone health.
S
cientists are recommending that international agencies
should reassess the dietary recommendations for
vitamin D intake. Experts are now warning that advice
is outdated and puts the public at risk of deficiency.
Fifteen experts from universities, research institutes, and
university hospitals around the world, led by Reinhold Vieth from
Toronto’s Mount Sinai Hospital wrote in the American Journal of
Clinical Nutrition: “We call for international agencies such as the
Food and Nutrition Board and the European Commission’s Health
and Consumer Protection Directorate-General to reassess as a
matter of high priority their dietary recommendations for vitamin
D, because the formal nationwide advice from health agencies needs
to be changed.”
Vitamin D refers to two forms known as vitamin D3, also
(cholecalciferol) and vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol). Vitamin D3 is
produced in the skin on exposure to sunlight and is more biologically
active. Vitamin D2 on the other hand is derived from plants and only
enters the body via the diet.
A recent review of the science reported that the tolerable upper
intake level for oral vitamin D3 should be increased five-fold, from
the current tolerable upper intake level in Europe and the US of
2000 International Units (IU), equivalent to 50 micrograms per day,
to 10,000 IU (250 micrograms per day).
According to the study, the prevalence of low vitamin D levels
in the general population was alarmingly high during the winter
and spring, which warrants action at a population level rather
than at a risk group level the researchers concluded. Vieth and
his fellow scientists commented that the study was yet another
publication in a series that document low vitamin D levels. Until
the general recommendations change Vieth says that this situation
will not change!

A sticky end to
supe
T
here would appear to be no stopping them. Super bugs
are on the march and infesting the very places you should
expect to feel safe in; hospitals. This is, however, old news
but the real problem still plagues us and makes any forthcoming
hospital stay a worrying prospect.
To put some numbers to this, the number of death certificates in England
and Wales that mentioned meticillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)
rose from 61 per cent in 2001 to 78 per cent in 2005 while deaths from the
other up and coming super bug, Clostridium difficile, increased by 69 per
cent. These statistics do not make for reassuring reading.
This probably explains the rise in questions now directed to our
help line and clinic staff regarding the best action to take before going to
hospital or how to battle the infection if the unthinkable occurs.
The biography of a super bug
The bacteria known as Staphylococcus aureus is commonly found on
the healthy human body, especially the skin and nose. The bug does not
normally cause problems unless it gets into the body through a wound or
cut. Even then it may only cause a mild infection that the body clears up
without a fuss. Sometimes the infection can get out of hand and problems
occur. This was all changed in the early 1940’s with the introduction
of penicillin. This wonder drug cured Staphylococcus aureus infections
in record time and it was soon used to treat any infection sometimes
before the body was given a chance to do the job itself. Predictably, in
time Staphylococcus aureus became resistant to penicillin and started to
produce a substance called beta-lactamase that inactivated penicillin and
6
in so doing destroyed its antibacterial activity. The writing was on the wall
for antibiotics and the bug was winning. In response, scientists produced
new antibiotics that were not affected by beta-lactamase. Preparations
such as methicillin and flucloxacillin became the next generation of
wonder drug but as we now know the bugs are always evolving new tricks
and in time became resistant. The era of MRSA was upon us.
What can be done?
Believe it or not the humble garlic clove and a dollop of honey could hold
the key to dealing with antibiotic resistant infections. Garlic contains a
substance called Allicin that is an excellent natural antimicrobial. It can
deal with a range of drug resistant bacteria and a standardised dose may
help shift MRSA. The main antimicrobial effect of allicin appears to be
due to its interaction with a key biological enzyme known as thioredoxin
reductases. With this enzyme disabled by allicin the bacteria simply
cannot survive. Studies also show that allicin blocks other key enzymes
within the bacteria making it almost impossible for the bacteria to
develop a resistance on so many levels. It is important to remember that
allicin is the key proven compound found in fresh, not aged, garlic. We
now recommend that a standardised single dose supplement containing
5000mcg of allicin (Garlinase 4000) be taken by anyone worried about
hospital infection. By taking an enteric coated preparation all the
freshness is preserved but the garlic is only broken down in the small
intestine thus avoiding “garlic-breath”. It’s also good to know that as
well as helping to keep the killer bugs down garlic also supports your
heart health!

er bugs?
Another old remedy that is making a come back is honey. Folklore
has documented honey as a cure for many nasty infections ranging from
smallpox through to pimples and from baldness through to indigestion.
It was even used as a contraceptive! As we now appreciate, many folk
remedies simply do not stand up to scientific scrutiny and in many cases
there are far superior alternatives, but in the case of infection control
honey looks like it may be a real winner. A curious aspect to honey is its
high sugar content. Surely such a substance would feed bacteria making
it the perfect growth medium? In fact, its high sugar level actually
inhibits bacterial growth. The sugar content is so high it causes bacteria
to collapse and die. Honey typically contains around 40% fructose and
30% glucose along with other antibacterial ingredients. Any water content
found in the honey is supersaturated with sugar. This means that the
water is not available to the micro-organisms – it’s locked up within the
honey itself. Interestingly, honey also contains a substance called glucose
oxidase. When combined with water and oxygen, glucose oxidase forms
gluconic acid and hydrogen peroxide. This means that a honey and water
mix can serve as an excellent antiseptic, while being far less likely than
ordinary hydrogen peroxide to harm already-damaged tissue. This may
help explain the beneficial effects of honey within the human gut. A strong
Manuka honey preparation taken internally can kill the dreaded gastric
ulcer forming bacteria known as H.pylori. This bug is not a super bug
but it is a nasty fellow all the same. It can be very resistant to antibiotic
therapy. Manuka honey at the strength UMF 10, 15 and even 25 is now
available. The code UMF stands for Unique Manuka Factor and is only
issued to honey products that have passed a strict standardisation test to
ensure purity. Simply taking 1-2 teaspoons of the standardised Manuka
honey first thing in the morning on an empty stomach can sterilise the
stomach and kill off the H.pylori via the formation of gluconic acid and
hydrogen peroxide when the honey mixes with the stomach fluids.
What makes Manuka honey extra special is the additional
ingredients unique to this type of honey. Manuka honey is made by bees
that visit the flowers of the Manuka bush (Leptospermum scoparium),
found in New Zealand. It would appear that antibacterial substances are
transferred from the Manuka bush via the bees into the honey giving the
honey its unique ability to kill bugs including super bugs. To benefit from
Manuka’s antibacterial action, the special cream product is needed. By
applying Manuka Cream (UMF 18) around a wound site or directly to
an infected area, its antibacterial actions can take effect in the surface of
the skin. Care must be taken to use the sterilised cream product and not
honey produced for regular consumption. This ensures that the cream
is pure and can’t introduce any natural spores and pollen grains that
could aggravate an open wound. Honey has been used safely for many
thousands of years and we can now benefit from modern purification
and manufacturing techniques. By combining Manuka honey cream
(UMF18) topically and taking a daily dose of Garlinase 4000, standardised
to contain 5000mcgs of allicin, you can battle the bugs both internally
and externally and give them a real run for their money!

Bilberry
(Vaccinium myrtillus)
T
he traditional use of bilberry differs significantly from
its modern uses. Traditional European medicine has
documented it as a cure for diarrhoea probably because the
fruit contains high concentrations of tannins, substances that act
as both an anti-inflammatory and an astringent. This property may
explain why it was also noted as a wound-healing agent helping
wounds heal more quickly.
Modern analysis revealed antioxidant secret
Modern analysis of bilberries now reveals that the key compounds in
the fruit are natural antioxidants known as anthocyanidins. These
compounds are known to help build strong capillaries and improve
circulation to all areas of the body. They also prevent blood platelets from
clumping together. This action may be helpful in reducing the risk of
blood clots, which may lead to heart attack or stroke.
As mentioned earlier, bilberry fruit is also rich in tannins. These
substances act as natural astringents, and may help reduce bleeding and
ease inflammation. When it comes to helping boost vision, bilberries
probably offer the best natural support available.
Special support for diabetics
The anthocyanidins content increases the production of a key vision
chemical called rhodopsin. This pigment improves night vision and helps
the eye adapt to light changes. This sight assisting function combined
with the anti-inflammatory and capillary strengthening actions explains
why bilberry extract supplements are so prized by diabetics seeking to
preserve and support their sight. To help keep blood sugars in check
bilberry leaves have traditionally been used. A couple of modern studies
indicate that those with type 2 diabetes may benefit from supplements
containing leaf extract as well as the berry concentrate.
Keeping cholesterol in balance
Bilberry fruits also contain other important compounds called flavonoids
as well as anthocyanidins. Flavonoids are plant pigments and offer
additional antioxidant properties ridding the body of unwanted and
potentially damaging free radicals. These substances are produced
within the body as a by-product of simply being alive. If an excessive
level of free radicals accumulate, cellular damage can occur. This has
been linked with an increased predisposition to a number of long-
10
term illnesses such as heart disease, cancer, and an eye disorder called
macular degeneration. Studies have found that anthocyanidins may
strengthen blood vessels, improve circulation, and prevent the oxidation
of LDL (“bad”) cholesterol, a major risk factor for atherosclerosis , stroke
and coronary artery disease.
The eyes have it!
As mentioned above, the anthocyanidin content of the fruits may also
be useful for people with vision problems. During World War II, British
fighter pilots reported that bilberries improved their night-time vision
and helped them quickly adjust to darkness. Modern thinking believes
that the anthocyanidins may help protect the retina, the nerve layer that
lines the back of the eye and sends nerve impulses to the visual areas
of the brain. Studies conducted in the 1960s, 70s, and 80s also show
that the anthocyanidins contained in bilberry fruit preparations improve
symptoms of a variety of visual disturbances including nearsightedness,
cataracts, and macular degeneration. Ongoing research is now showing
that other factors such as vitamin B2, beta carotene and the plant
pigment lutein are also key agents that may reduce the acceleration of
eye degenerative disease.
Getting your daily bilberries
Fresh bilberries taste great! They can be eaten as they are or in dried
forms. Fresh or dried berries as well as the leaves of the bilberry plant may
be used to make bilberry tea. Bilberry extract should be standardized to
contain 25% anthocyanidins – check the product label. The standardised
extract contains the highest percentage of anthocyanidins, making it the
most potent form of bilberry. Tinctures are also available, these are best
taken in water, 15-20 drops twice a day.
A word of caution
In theory, because the anthocyanidins in bilberry may inhibit blood
from clotting, there may be an increased risk of bleeding in those
taking anthocyanidin extracts from bilberry along with blood thinners,
particularly warfarin. This has not been tested scientifically, but those
taking warfarin or other blood thinners in the same class, known as
anticoagulants, should be very careful if considering use of high dose
bilberry supplements.

Feeding your Skin
the way to a clear complexion
H
aving a poor complexion can lead to low self esteem, but
there is no need suffer. Anyone who has suffered from
true acne, not just the occasional spot, will know that it is
a distressing condition which saps a way self-confidence. It often
results in a trip to the doctor and the expected prescription is a
course of antibiotics, usually one of the tetracycline group. These
may clear the skin but with the risks involved, many people decline
this form of treatment.
A regulation and metabolism. Male acne sufferers have been shown to be
low in the enzyme glutathione peroxidase. This is an important substance
found within the red blood cell. Supplementing the diet with vitamin E
and selenium can restore the levels of this enzyme to normal, with an
improvement in acne symptoms. Glutathione peroxidase is involved in
the breakdown of fats, or more specifically the peroxidation of lipids. This
suggests that the other free radical agents, vitamin C and betacarotene
are important in the treatment of acne.
So what are the alternatives?
Zinc is probably the most important nutrient in the treatment of acne.
Of all the zinc in your body, 20% is concentrated in the skin which
therefore reacts quickly to zinc deficiency. Zinc is critical to the metabolism of vitamin A in the skin. It is essential in wound healing, immune
function and in the control of inflammation. All these factors are vital
in the effective treatment of acne. It is interesting to note that those
aged around 14 years have the lowest levels of zinc than in any other
age group. Zinc is normally recommended in combination with other
factors, but the general rule is that it needs to be taken for at least 12
weeks before improvements are seen. It has been our experience that
zinc oxide is particularly well tolerated.
Whenever Vitamin A is discussed, recommended doses tend to be
very high. In the past, side effects have been reported from high dose
vitamin A treatment, but in our experience when taken in combination
with other nutrients, the co-factors, such as zinc, vitamin B6, selenium,
vitamin E and vitamin C, the dose can be substantially reduced and with
better results.
The antioxidant nutrients, vitamin E and selenium should be taken
together; they work best as a pair, one complementing the action of the
other. These substances have the additional benefit of assisting in vitamin
You are what you eat
Looking to the diet, there are many areas where individual sensitivities
may play an important role. Does chocolate actually aggravate acne?
Some studies cannot prove that an association exists between chocolate
consumption and acne symptoms while others do. In general, it is a
system of trial and error. Limiting the intake of animal fats (milk, milk
products, butter, fat, synthetic hydrogenated vegetable oil and so on)
is important. These substances need internal metabolic processing to
render them safe which places a huge demand on the nutritional status
of the body. In other words they burn up your antioxidant stores. Another
general rule is to cut out refined carbohydrates (sugars) from the diet.
Sugar will leach away most of your chromium pool (of which there is
only about 400g to start with.)
It has been suggested that chromium is involved in the control of
skin glucose concentrations. The term ‘skin diabetes’ has been used
to describe this situation. A high skin glucose will aggravate the skin
infection associated with acne. Supplementing the diet with chromium
will help refill the biological pool and control the skin glucose levels.
Keeping the bowels regular is another aspect often neglected by acne
sufferers. The development of toxic matter is common in constipation.
A change in bowel bacteria population also occurs which adds to the

toxic overload. An overgrowth of the yeast parasite, candida albicans,
is likely in this situation. Once established candida is difficult to shift
without a good bowel detoxification programme. Increasing soluble fibre
and lactobacilli intake, combined with the herb Hydrastis Canadensis
(Goldenseal) will assist in re-establishing healthy and balanced bowel
function.

If you take a close look at some of the preparations available to fight
acne, which are applied topically, there are some surprises in store.
Many formulations aimed at problem skin strip it of its natural oils. The
skin will become taut and dry, and may even be exposed to bacterial or
fungal infections in the short term. In the long term it has the opposite
effect. By stripping the sebum (oil) with strong astringents and soaps,
the sebaceous glands will start to produce more sebum to counteract the
dryness of the skin.
Even if the skin seems oily, it is still important to re-balance the
moisture content. A regular routine of cleansing, and moisturising
should carried out daily. Once a week a gentle facial scrub or peel is
recommended to exfoliate the skin.

Questions
Q
I have been suffering from Poly Cystic Ovary Syndrome
(PCOS) for many years and have found that following a
low glycaemic (GI) diet had really helped me. Recently
I have been finding it difficult to stick to and I feel that
my ups and downs are related to my sugar levels. Is
there anything natural that can help?
Sticking to your low GI diet is very important but using a couple of
natural food supplements may give you the help you are looking for.
Try taking the white kidney bean extract called Phase-2. This limits the
amount of starchy carbohydrate that is digested and made into glucose.
Just 2-3 capsules (500mg) taken with plenty of water before a starch
based meal really helps. In addition, the fenugreek extract called 4hydroxy-isoleucine (Promilin) appears to improve the way your insulin
works. Many PCOS sufferers, just like type-2 diabetics, have a problem
called insulin resistance. Promilin looks like it improves this situation
and helps you keep your sugars in balance. This in turn turns the sugar
and carbohydtare cravings down. A low GI diet, Phase-2 and Promilin
supplement plan should help your situation.
Q
I have come down with the flu and I am really ill. My
nose is streaming, my body aches terribly and inside
my ears feel full and crackle, which is painful. I can’t
hear very well now. Is there anything I can do?
The best thing to do is to support the immune system to assist the body
to fight off the influenza virus as quickly as possible. The remedy
Metavirulent contains influenza nosodes, which protect against and
help overcome influenza infections. As for the ear, I would recommend
Plantago to help relieve inflammation and congestion of the mucous
membranes. Try to avoid cow’s milk and dairy produce in your diet, as
these are mucous forming.
Q
Could you give me some advice on how to improve
my energy levels? I eat a sensible diet and I get
plenty of sleep but I feel exhausted and rather
jaded all the time.
Although you have a good diet, you do sound as though you could do
with some additional support. Therefore I would recommend the remedy
Energy Factors from the American company Michael’s. This supplement
helps to restore mental alertness, when experiencing drowsiness and
fatigue.

Q
I have been suffering for a number of years now
with a permanent irritating cough. It makes me feel
exhausted and I am at the end of my tether. I have
even stopped socialising and find it hard to use the
telephone because I just can’t stop coughing. I have
seen a specialist and he advised me to use inhalers. I
do not seem to feel any help from these and I cannot
keep taking antibiotics.
In the first instance, I would suggest taking one Acidophilus Pearl first
thing in the morning to help replenish the healthy bacterial flora, which
can be destroyed through the use of antibiotics. For the bronchiectasis,
I would recommend Ivy Thyme Complex to help soothe the cough. You
could also take some Sure Cure, which is beneficial for irritating and
persistent coughs.
Q
After all the excesses of the last few months I feel that
my body could do with a bit of a “Spring Clean”, as I
feel sluggish and lethargic. Do you have any guidance
you could offer me on this?
There is a Detox Box from A.Vogel that I would suggest you use. This
contains a combination of herbal remedies, which aids the cleansing
of the liver, kidney’s bowel and lymphatic system (our main excretory
glands). Try doing this twice a year around Spring and Autumn when
the body is naturally trying to detoxify itself anyway. If you have kidney
or liver complaints it would be best to seek the advice of a Healthcare
Professional before embarking on any detox regime. Keep your diet as
fresh and as whole as possible and avoid junk food and pre-packaged
processed foods. Good fruit and vegetables are wonderful cleansers.
Q
I am writing in the hope that you can suggest something
for a heavy cold for my daughter. She is pregnant and
the doctor says all she can take is paracetamol, which
is not helping at all. It started before Christmas,
seemed to get better, then came back as bad as ever
but is now in her head and chest. Her immune system
is not very good, and she has started taking a multi
vitamin. Is there anything she could take?
As she is pregnant I would not recommend anything herbal, however, she
would be fine to take the homeopathic remedy Echtrosept-T at a dose of
1-2 tablets, twice a day after meals. This is a natural antibiotic, which
should help to support her immune system. I would also recommend
Doctors Choice Prenatal Formula from Enzymatic Therapy, instead of the
multi vitamin. This will provide the recommended amount of folic acid
and nutritional balance that pregnant women need.
