San Dieguito High School Academy Foundation Dear SDA families and friends, On behalf of the San Dieguito Academy Foundation (SDAF) Board of Directors, I am proud to provide you with our annual report for the fiscal year July 2010 – June 2011. I had the pleasure of becoming involved with the Board in the middle of last year. I was thoroughly impressed with the dedication of its members and the Foundation’s 14-‐year tradition of enhancing SDA’s unique culture and quality programs by raising funds and promoting active parental and community involvement. When I was invited to take on the position of president of this critical organization, I was honored to accept. The Foundation’s Board members represent just a fraction of the hundreds of volunteers who spend countless hours helping the school and our students. We want to extend our deepest gratitude to all of you — whether you chaperoned school dances, stuffed envelopes for special mailings, served as chauffeurs to various tournaments and events or as judges for Battle of the Band, or staffed a booth at Grad Nite. SDA would not be where it is today without your contributions of time, goods and money. During the fiscal year, the Foundation addressed several changes and challenges and accomplished a great deal with limited resources. The Board of Directors made significant changes to the way the Foundation operates and we found creative ways to make do with less. An important accomplishment was discovering new sources of income. We launched a partnership with Revolution Test Prep and Catalyst Test Prep, both of which donated a portion of their sales to the SDA Foundation. The Board voted to use that income to fund the Counseling Department and the College and Career Center and to provide scholarships for graduating seniors. The highlight of the year was the completion of the state-‐of-‐the-‐art Performing Arts Center (PAC), which houses the Clayton E. Liggett Theater. The opening of the PAC is a tremendous accomplishment for our school, our students and our community. Although this building is called a Performing Art Center because of its primary teaching purpose, in actuality all students will use it during a variety of events and activities that take place on campus. These events include Grad Nite, Speech and Debate competitions, Comedy Sportz, and Battle of the Bands. A combination of state and district funds targeted for construction paid for approximately half of the $9.7 million cost of the building. The remainder was raised through a combination of grants, loans and parent and community fundraising. SDAF proudly presented the district with the $375,000, which was a portion of the total funds w e raised during a 5-‐year capital campaign. The fact that we were able to raise this amount in just a few short years is testament to the hard work of a small group of dedicated volunteers who worked tirelessly to spread the word about the importance of a new PAC for our school. As importantly, the successful campaign is an indication of the SDA community’s willingness to rally behind a cause. 4

Fundraising, Gifts and Grants We ended the year positively, with income from fundraising totaling more than $165,800, which was just slightly less than the prior year. We also received nearly $90,000 in direct contributions to our general fund, and cleared more than $363,000 for the PAC campaign. In addition, we saw an increase in the number of families who chose to donate directly to activities that their children are involved with. More than $97,000 in donations were earmarked to our member councils, which support extra-‐curricular activities (Athletics, Music, Theater Arts, Academic (which supports Speech & Debate, M ustang Minds, and Robotics), Student Support Services and Grad Nite. In addition to the SDA families who generously supported SDAF, gifts from alumni and local corporations, as well as grants from government and private foundations, had a large impact. During the fiscal year 2010-‐2011, we received generous donations to the general fund from long-‐time supporters, the City of Encinitas and the Mizel Family Foundation Community Grant Program. We also received two restricted grants. The Gary and Mary West Foundation provided $10,000 for our Workability program, which provides pre-‐
employment skills training, worksite training and follow-‐up services for youth in special education who are making the transition from school to work. And, the Encinitas Rotary donated $3,000 toward AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination), an in-‐school academic support program that prepares students for college eligibility and success. In addition, many local corporations supported both the Foundation and its Councils. For instance, SAIC generously supported our Robotics Program. And, we received many matching donations, thanks to SDA parents who took the time to process the grant requests through their employers. Matching corporate grants are often overlooked as a way for families to support our school, so we encourage everyone to take advantage of that employment benefit if it’s available to you. SDA’s new Performing Arts Center opened on August 30, 2011. The 16,000-‐square-‐foot facility incorporates theater and music wings to serve the needs of both drama and m usic students. The theater wing includes a 200-‐seat indoor Clayton Liggett Theater, classrooms, practice areas, dressing rooms, a scenery lab, a 500-‐
seat outdoor stage with sound reflectors, and storage space for props and sets. The music wing features a 3,700-‐square-‐foot rehearsal hall, six soundproof practice rooms, a music library, an instrument storage room and a recording arts classroom. 6

San Dieguito High School Academy Foundation Funded Projects Historically, the Foundation has focused on funding programs the school would not otherwise have in order to provide students with an enriched academic experience. However, in recent years, an increasing percentage of the Foundation’s donations to the school are targeted to basic educational programs and supporting the priority needs that benefit all students (as identified by SDA’s principal and staff). This is because the State of California continues to cut back on educational funding, thus forcing school districts like SDUHSD to decrease the allotment for each school. As a result, educational foundations like SDAF are filling the gap between limited public funds and the dollars needed to support educational goals. In recent years, this gap has consistently expanded. At the beginning of the year, we worked closely with the SDA’s past principal, Mike Grove, to establish a shared vision that would guide how w e allocate the Foundation’s funds. We were able to fund about 90 percent of our goals in the following areas:  Academic programs (such as tutoring)  Expansion of the arts/media/entertainment program through the completion of the PAC  Health care and bio-‐technology program  College and Career Center  Technology upgrades  Development of a new engineering design and development curriculum SDA Achievements and Recognition Thanks to our financial support and the tireless time and commitment from hundreds of parent volunteers, our students were able to excel in countless ways. It would be impossible to spotlight all of the students’ achievements during 2010-‐2011. They included thoroughly entertaining theater productions; festival performances that garnered two consecutive “unanimous superior” ratings for the Wind Ensemble and excellent ratings for both the Symphonic and Jazz Bands; the Mustang Minds team’s electrifying defeat of Canyon Crest 3 Did you know? The Student Support Service Council promotes the efforts of students, parents, counselors, administrators, staff and the community to develop programs that address relevant issues. The council sponsored the standing-‐room only parent forum "Tune Into Your Teens," featuring panelists discussing how to effectively communicate with teens. It also coordinated four Start Smart driving safety classes for more than 400 parents and teens. The district now requires that all students and at least one of their parents must take this course in order to obtain a parking pass. Academy; a second consecutive trip to the Robotics World Championship; and several Speech and Debate team members participating in state and national championships. Our students’ outstanding academic and extracurricular achievements, along with the staff’s dedication and hard work, led to significant recognitions for the school. It became a California Distinguished School and was one of only four California schools to also receive an additional award for its Exemplary Career Technical Education Program. And, Newsweek Magazine ranked SDA 180 on its annual list of America’s Best High Schools, putting SDA in the top 20 percent of the schools surveyed. The Outlook Ahead With all this momentum behind us, we can set our sights on achieving even more. The Foundation’s Board will continue to examine how to operate more effectively, as well as how to generate new sources of funds. We hope to expand the SDA’s visibility within the community, engage corporate partners and leverage alumni’s ongoing devotion to the school. W e also revised our bylaws to allow community members w ho do not currently have 7
San Dieguito High School Academy Foundation students at SDA to become voting board members. In doing so, we hope to round out the Board with fresh perspectives, additional experience and broader skills. We’ve worked with our new principal, Tim Hornig, to establish a new shared vision, which includes many of our previous themes, as well as a commitment to support the development of the new Business Ownership & Management program and student-‐run business. As always, we depend largely upon SDA families to help meet our financial goal. For the 2011-‐2012 academic year, we hope to raise $150,000 in donations to the Foundation’s general fund. With approximately 1,500 families, an annual contribution of $100 per family will achieve this financial goal. Thus, with just $8 per month/per family, w e can meet 100 percent of our commitment to the school. In addition, we know parents will continue to contribute directly to the various Councils, thus sustaining the school’s successful extracurricular programs. Both the Councils and the Foundation as a whole will also run various fundraisers and continue to look for grants from the community and local corporations. Given the successful capital campaign for the new PAC, imagine w hat we can accomplish if we raise less than half that amount to support an even bigger cause – SDA as a whole. Imagine the technology upgrades, the scholarships, and the countless new programs that the Foundation would be able to fund if we all come together to muster the same amount of enthusiasm as w e did for the PAC. With everyone’s help, we can continue to bridge the gap between public funding and SDA’s needs and ensure that our students receive the exceptional educational opportunities that are the hallmark of SDA. Thank you for your ongoing support. Sincerely, Don Cardenas President San Dieguito High School Academy Foundation 4 Where Your Money Goes From the PAC Capital Campaign  $375,000 for the completion of the Performing Arts Center From the SDAF general fund  $18,300 for basic materials and supplies in various departments  $13,000 for equipment and supplies to launch the Introduction to Engineering course  $10,500 for a part-‐time tutor to staff the Writing Lab  $3,750 to the Bio-‐Tech Program for a lab assistant;  $3,325 for scholarships to graduating seniors  $3,100 to the College and Career Center for software and online support  $3,000 for printing and web services for the student newspaper, the Mustang  $1,500 for training teachers on Blackboard, Naviance and AERIES programs  $1,500 to the Counseling Department for basic operating needs From the Theater Council  $8,000 for professional technical support and a voice coach From the Music Council  $6,300 for instrument purchase and maintenance  $1,400 for the Artist in Residence Program From the Academic Council  $62,000 to support the Robotics program  $6,400 for Speech & Debate tournament and competition fees  $1,000 for Mustang Minds academic petition supplies and fees From the Athletic Council  $79,600 for floater coaches, trainers, field repairs and equipment 1
