February 2011
The DAC Board of Directors.
There is one opening on the Board of Directors! This is your opportunity to get involved in planning social
activities to continue the camaraderie enjoyed by directory employees during their days with the Directory department;
to assist in the publishing of a membership directory, newsletter and web site allowing members to keep in touch with
friends made over the years.
The lifeblood of the Directory Alumni Council is its membership and its heart is the volunteer Board of Directors. If
you are the type of person who seeks out and acts on solutions, works well both independently and within a team, and
isn't afraid of a little hard work, this may be a great opportunity for you. It is the membership that votes to put people
on the Board, for a three year term, and voting takes place at the Annual Meeting in April.
Some positions on the board have set responsibilities, such as Treasurer, Secretary, Chairman and Vice-Chairman, and
these positions are decided each term by the Board of Directors. For most new Directors, their responsibilities include
running 1 event per year, assisting one of the other Directors with large projects from time to time, and familiarizing
themselves with the working of the Board with an eye to taking on more responsibilities in the next term.
The DAC Board of Directors meets one day a month from January to June and September to November. Meetings
generally run from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM. Are you able to accept this commitment?
Check out our web site for details regarding Officer and Board Member position responsibilities.
http://www.ypalumni.org/about_us.htm Officers are elected through an official election process at a board
meeting. Board Members nominate candidates for election to the Board of Directors at the Annual Meeting in April.
If you are interested in running for the Directory Alumni Council Board of Directors, please contact our
Chairman, Claire Palmer, at [email protected] or [email protected].
Tell us your area of expertise or areas of interest, such as: Organizational, Sales, Financial, Nonprofit Management or
Nonprofit Board Experience, Computer Expertise, Event Coordination, Other area (please specify).
What can I do to increase membership?
Our Directory Alumni Council was founded on November 23, 1987 by a wonderful group of people like
you, who thought it might be nice to stay in touch with some of their friends after they have left the
company. You don’t have to be of retirement age to join. If you ever worked in Directory, at any
time, we welcome your membership in the Directory Alumni Council.
While the duties of the officers are spelled out clearly, it is incumbent upon everyone to recruit and help
grow the DAC. The DAC helps meet the social and communications needs of retirees. Every member can
help by spreading the word about the DAC, and by personally signing up former Directory employees who
have not yet heard of the Directory Alumni Council, and therefore have not had the opportunity to join.
Many people transferred to other companies as NYNEX/Bell Atlantic/Verizon/Idearc/SuperMedia altered
its business model, and lost contact with their membership opportunities. The company will not help us
toward this end by supplying former employee names or addresses (as a matter of confidentiality), nor will
they advise active employees that we exist. Therefore, membership growth is a real priority as we face the
issues that the future is certain to present.
If you know of others who worked in Directory, at any time, we welcome their membership in the
Directory Alumni Council. Go to our web site http://www.ypalumni.org/join.htm and click on
“Application Form”.

The Directory Alumni
Council
The Telephone Company, like other
major corporations consists of many
divisions.
Our division, the
Directory Department, also known
as Yellow Pages and SuperPages,
services the business community by
selling Yellow and White Pages
advertising.
There are various
groups within Directory: sales
representatives, artists, clerical
personal, public affairs, legal,
finance, marketing, information
systems,
customer
relations,
network, and real estate. Through
teamwork these groups expand the
company into new domestic and
global markets.
So it was that on November 23,
1987 a group of 8 Yellow Page
sales people who truly loved their
profession, decided they would
always enjoy being a part of this
exciting business, even after they
retired, by keeping in touch with
their past.

Jim’s Jems
By Jim Mullaney
Susan Burke, as usual, is always a
pleasure to talk to. She‟s still
working, but for an agency now and
recruits people to work. She works
out of the Worcester area which is a
bit of a drive from Lynn. I know
because I used to go to Lynn from
Milford. I ducked the rush hour
traffic, though, so it wasn‟t all that
bad. Sue and I didn‟t talk all that
much so there isn‟t all that much I
can
tell
you
about
her,
unfortunately. Hey you win a few
and lose a few.
Joan
Champoux
and
her
companion Bob Burt are enjoying
living in their new condo. She is
feeling much better these days,
thank goodness and, ironically,
recognized my voice right away.
We were fairly close when we both
served with the Alumni Council.
We spoke shortly after she had
gotten home from the doctor‟s office
and she said she got a clean bill of
health so that‟s dynamite.
One of my long time work
associates was Michaela Cleary
who worked in the Providence area.
She was always pleasant and easy to
get along with. She‟s still hanging
in there and doesn‟t seem to have
changed at all. But then why should
she. She‟s still relatively young,
single and pretty. It‟s hard to beat
those odds.
As one would guess, I speak to
many of our retirees and leave my
name and telephone number with
others who don‟t happen to be home
when I call. One of those was
NEWSLETTER
Donna Carr, who actually took the
time to return my call. She‟s a paid
volunteer working at a nursing home
facility about twenty hours a week, I
think. Like many others she enjoys
what she‟s doing and got to meet
many people.
Thank you for
returning my call, Donna, I not only
appreciated it but I also enjoyed
talking to you.
WOW! Two in a row… Betty
McManus just returned my call too.
She‟s doing just fine after all she
went through this past year. As I
said to her, I was almost as surprised
and amazed as she was that she had
any medical problems at all. To me,
she was always the picture of good
health and strength.
I even
remember going to watch her play
on the girl‟s softball team a few
years back. Periodically, she and
Betty Mandl used to swap visits. In
fact, if memory serves me correctly,
she was ready to go to Betty‟s for a
visit when she collapsed. I said at
the time, she was lucky she had a
little McManus Irish luck. At least
she was in her home territory of
Greater Boston. On the telephone
she sounds as great as ever. I guess
she gets that from her Italian
ancestry. Who cares; she‟s still here
and that‟s the important part. Keep
up the great fight Betty and
continued best of luck.
Well, as I‟ve said many times
before, we‟re here one day at a time.
I spoke to old time pro, John
Eidukonis, and he recently was in
and now is out of the hospital
having had a stroke and related
medical problems. He‟s in his early
90‟s and still hanging in there. He
was a salesman in the NTSB when
New England Telephone took over
the “Yellow Pages” from them in
1953. That was a good group of
people.
There were there
saleswomen that came with them all
of whom I related to but,
unfortunately, don‟t immediately
recall their names. However, they
were all good in their jobs. One of
the salesmen that came over with the
group was Ellsworth “Gary”
Garrison who eventually became
the “head honcho” of all the Yellow
Pages. In those days, he was what
today would be the equivalent of a
District Manager and I worked
under him.
It‟s a good thing
because he lit a candle under me and
I had to do the job. In those days,
we used to cover Boston and
Providence books.
I lived in
Providence and had the commute to
Boston because I had three kids at
the time and couldn‟t afford the
expense of moving up to that area.
But as fate would have it, the
Company set up a Rhode Island
office location and I was sitting fat,
dumb and happy. Now more than a
half century later, I‟m still here and
enjoying every day. It‟s certainly
more preferable that the alternative.
Just for a break in this newsletter,
I‟ll tell you what I think is a pretty
good golf joke.
Sam and Jillian were in bed talking.
“I suppose if I died you already have
your eye on some pretty young thing
to take my place, said Jillian.
“Maybe”.
“And I suppose you‟d even have her
share our bedroom, and our bed”,
snapped Jillian.
“Maybe”.
“And I suppose you‟d even let her
use my golf clubs”‟ sobbed Jillian.
“Nope, muttered Sam. “She‟s left
handed.”
Hey! You win a few and lose a few.
To me, it‟s much nicer and easier to
smile and be friendly then to frown
and be sad. Of course, not everyone
is like me so that‟s probably good.
Speaking of good, I tried calling
Doris L‟Hommedieu but her son
answered the phone. I asked if she
was okay and he said yes but just
wasn‟t available at that time. Like
some of us, she‟s crowding the
century mark in age but, happily,
she‟s still here.
We went out
together on a couple of occasions an
always had a good time. In her job
routine, she was a Directory
Advertising
Salesperson
in
telephone sales. Some of the other
people, who worked with her at the
time, all women in those days, were
Maggie Clark (since married), Jan
Nazzaro, Barbara Morrissey and
too many others for me to remember
them all. Thelma Corbin, Vicki
Droker and Lillian Deutsch were
among the canvassers, as they were
called. What a great group of
women they were and great
salespeople.
Harry and Mary Lou Wiley have
always been good friends through
the many years we worked in the
Yellow Pages. They met while both
worked together and are now Mr. &
Mrs. And have been for 30 years,
give or take. Mary Lou‟s previous
name was Lawton, if memory serves
me correctly. Harry‟s first wife died
relatively young. One of the things
Harry and I agree on, there are fewer
and fewer of us still hopping around.
We‟re not hopping as fast though.
Harry is still involved in hospice
visitations while, I‟m pretty sure,
Mary Lou is involved in being the
good housewife. It‟s amazing how
these conversations go but I‟m
always smiling after I talk to them.
I had a relatively long conversation
with Bobbie Gifford. Of course, all
our conversations are relatively long
or longer. That‟s because she‟s so
delightful to talk to. As mentioned
before, we both worked with the
same people but never seem to
duplicate each other. That in itself
is almost unbelievable. Bobbie,
Claire Palmer, Karen Gagne ad I
went to Ken‟s Steak House in
Framingham not too long ago and
. . . .
.
5
February 2011
had a very nice conversation over
lunch. Afterwards, they went their
way and I went mine. All four of us
are current or former Chairs of the
DAC and that‟s why we gather
together each year. It‟s part of our
Directory heritage and says we
worked in the Yellow Pages rather
than in the Telephone Company
although the YP was, indeed, the
Telephone Company. Thank God.
Yippie! Bill Sweeney called and he
said he is still involved in yellow
pages advertising. It‟s with Obben
Publisher, an independent company
in Ft. Myers, FL, and he is the Sales
Manager. The company is located
in the western side of Florida. His
close friend, Joanne Jacobson,
works in the Sarasota area and heads
up community relations for the
county of Sarasota. It was super
talking to the two of them. Bill and
I worked together in the YP many
years ago probably when I was an
overbearing manager. Oh well, the
years go by and at least everyone is
still talking to each other.
Who could ever forget Kathy Pujo?
She was and still is a dynamite
personality. Kathy is close enough
to man of the girls, now women, she
worked with so that‟s comfortable
for her. Unfortunately, I can‟t write
as fast as people talk so I‟ don‟t
remember the names. Also many of
our retirees don‟t appear in our
Membership Directory so it‟s kind
of tough to keep up with them.
I‟ve just finished writing my column
and thought I‟d better quit before I
take over the whole newsletter, but
not before I leave you with a good
joke the ladies are sure to like. Two
women were talking and one said, “I
just got a new set of golf clubs for
my husband and the other said, gee
what a great trade.” Amen!
My best to all of you. Jim§

Fenway Park:
Home of the Red Sox
Fenway Park is just four years
younger than Jack Norworth's "Take
Me Out to the Ballgame," which
was penned in 1908. When Fenway
was built, there were only eight
teams in the American League.
It's a unique design – the outfield
seats cut into centerfield at a strange
angle and a huge 37-foot-high wall
known as the Green Monster
dominates left field. And it has a
history as great as Boston itself.
The names who have played here
and the moments they created make
attending a game at Fenway Park a
moving experience. It's a step back
in time.
The old red brick exterior, compact
concession areas and the sightrestricting metal pillars supporting
the upper deck invite thoughts of
what it was like in the days of Ted
Williams, Jimmie Foxx, Jim
Lonborg, Rico Petrocelli, Fred
Lynn, Jim Rice and Yaz. Even Bill
"Spaceman" Lee.

BIG BUCKS FOR A SEVENTH
GRADER - The average cost for 1year of college education at an instate public college is $16,140 for
the 2010-11 school-year (cost
includes tuition, fees, room and
board). The total 1-year cost has
increased +6.3% per year over the
last 30 years. If that same annual
rate of inflation continues into the
future, then a 7th grader today will
ultimately pay $103,000 for his/her
4-years of education at an in-state
public college during the years
2016-20 (source: College Board).
We held our 12th Annual Holiday

that only two floors are now

lot of orders! I think we have

excellent job of putting everything

Caution to Job Seekers…
Pam Dixon, a privacy expert offers these tips to those using online job sites:
Use only your first initial and last name on your resume.
Do not include your phone number or address.
Use a new email account as contact information.
In addition, conduct extensive research on any companies that express an interest in hiring you. Contact the
company’s human resources department to confirm that the person posing as the interviewer is employed
there. Scammers have been known to use information from applicants’ online resume to contact them and
conduct bogus phone interviews. After the interview the scammer enthusiastically expresses an interest in
hiring the applicant and requests the applicants’ Social Security number and driver’s license number under
the guise of conducting a pre-employment background check. The end result is a stolen identity.

Rose Rauseo sent this note from her home in Winthrop, MA
I recently received the DAC newsletter and always enjoy reading what has happened with so many of the people I
have known throughout my years with yellow pages, etc.
It‟s been one year this month since I was struck by a car (2000 Mercedes SUV) crossing New Chardon Street in
Boston. I was in the hospital for almost two months and in a wheelchair for four. I am so lucky to be alive.
Unfortunately the jerk that hit me had basically no insurance. He was talking on the phone at the time…………
Right now I‟m trying to keep my head on straight as it was a very rough year for me all around, losing my job and
trying to keep my condo. These times are very tough for so many, and I am taking one day at a time.
It‟s been a few years since I‟ve been to the Holiday luncheon, but I am truly hoping that this year I will be able to
attend and visit with everyone. If I lived closer, I would consider joining one of the Committees or becoming a board
member, but I don‟t like to drive too far and night driving is totally out of the question.
Anyway, I do hope that I will see you all in December.
May you all be well and enjoy life !!!!!!

My nephew Leo has officially completed his solo walk of the Appalachian Trail! The whole trail... From Georgia to
Maine! The Appalachian Trail is a man-made trail that extends over 2,178 miles, from Mount Katahdin, Maine to
Springer Mountain, Georgia. The trail which runs thru 14 different states was begun in 1923, and completed in 1937.
It took Lee 209 days to walk the 2,178 miles, and he did this to support MS and in memory of his late father, Leo
Charles Palmer and his late best friend David Eric Lish. Lee left New Hampshire in early March and travelled to
Georgia to start his trek. He got home mid-October but had to go back to Maine on November 4th to finish the last 15
miles. The trail was shut down in early October due to a Nor‟easter that hit Maine. Imagine going all that way to find
that you couldn‟t finish the last 15 miles!
As you can imagine, the trek was a life changing experience. Lee met many people along the way; some he said
will be life long friends.

Carol Prata sent this family update…
Hi All,
Well, even though the highlight of our family news is 5 months old, we want to share it with all of you. The birth of
our great grandson, Demitrius.
He is precious. He was born on July 29th which is his yaya and
papou's wedding anniversary. Our daughter, Katherine and her husband, Nikos, were married on July 29th, 22 years
ago, so they were delighted when their daughter, Gina gave birth to Demitri on that day. I have attached some pictures
of him. I guess this was the highlight of the Prata/Zafirakis family in 2010.
Our son Craig and his wife Valerie have three children, Ashley (13), Chloe (9) and Andrew (8). They are all doing
great in school and busy, busy, busy with their activities. They are growing up so fast. Craig is working hard at
his tile business and Valerie is now teaching spinning classes in various health clubs and YMCAs.
Tony did a lot of golfing this past summer and I soaked up the sun at Good Harbor Beach in Gloucester. We, also,
have kept busy volunteering at Boot, Straps and More which is a non profit organization in Beverly. The program
does so much for the community which includes a food pantry, thrift shop, mentoring program, computer training
program and the list goes on. It is so rewarding to participate in this program. They are always looking for volunteers,
so, if you are interested, give them a call.
Tony went on a golf trip to South Carolina with some golf buddies and I went on a trip, in December, to Dallas and
Montgomery, TX. My nephew and his family, my sister and her husband and two of my girlfriends, live in Texas.
One of my friends has been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer, so I decided to go this year. Fortunately, to my
surprise, she is going into remission and is doing well. We really enjoyed our visit with each other.
Well, I guess that is all for now. Tony and I want to thank the board for all of their hard work and send our well
wishes to everyone.
Carol and Tony Prata
Congratulations to Carol and Tony and the happy parents of baby Demitrius from your friends in the DAC.

The DAC Board of Directors encourages you to consider the following important
request from the Association of BellTel Retirees Inc. If you choose to respond, you need
to sign up by submitting your information via email to: [email protected]
or, by mail to the address below.
IDEARC Information:
On November 17, 2006, Verizon spun off its domestic print and Internet yellow pages directories publishing
operations as well as the Verizon Information Services (VIS) to Idearc. As part of the spin-off transaction, Verizon
retirees were moved from the well-funded pension plan of Verizon into an up-start company's pension plan,
which may not be in their best interest.
Read about the claim at www.belltelretirees.org under Legal Actions.
Idearc/Super Media - "Involuntarily Transferred Retirees"
Answers to Frequently Asked Questions from Members
Q. I received an 8 page letter from Verizon denying my claim. What should I do?
A. While you are encouraged to go ahead and respond to the denial letter, don't expect to receive anything but
another denial letter. All of the issues are adequately argued and addressed in the pending Amended Complaint which
you should take time to read. If you respond to the denial letter you should state that you adopt the arguments raised
in the Murphy proposed class action and you should demand to be returned to Verizon's pension plans.
Q. Does the fact that I received the form denial letter mean that we lost our case?
A. No, the denial letter is the same letter sent to all complaining retirees. The actual lawsuit filed in the Dallas Federal
Court is moving along as expected. No legal issue has been ruled upon by the Dallas Federal Judge, and it will be
months, perhaps a year, before there are rulings. Both Verizon and Idearc/SuperMedia hired several large law firms
and every step of this case may encounter some delays. The legal issues are unique and complicated.
Q. Do I need to get my own attorney?
A. Certainly, you have that option. But, it may prove to be an unnecessary expenditure. The Murphy case is being
pursued with the goal of addressing the problems for all former Verizon retirees who were involuntarily transferred into
Idearc/SuperMedia pension plans.
Q. Does the fact that Idearc changed its name to SuperMedia affect our case?
A. No, that fact has absolutely no effect on the lawsuit.
Q. What is the status of the case?
A. In mid-March 2010, defense counsel for both Verizon and Idearc/SuperMedia will respond to the pending Amended
Complaint and argue to have certain claims dismissed. Our attorneys will file a response in opposition. The court
filings will await a decision by the federal judge. Meanwhile, the next big fight will be over whether or not the case
should be class certified. All of this will take some time. All significant court filings will be posted at the retiree website.

Q. Where can I find updates on the case?
A. The Association of BellTel Retirees posts updates: www.belltelretirees.org Please read the Amending Complaint
filed on January 6, 2010, which thoroughly explains the proposed class action case and is posted at the website. Also,
when required, important email bulletins will be sent and USPS letters will be mailed to those not on the Internet. Email
is the best way to stay informed. Meanwhile, if you receive any letters from Verizon or Idearc regarding the suit, please
call the Association office: 1-800-261-9222 or email us on: [email protected] and register your name and

Update: October 20, 2010
October 20, 2010
This is an update about the Murphy, et al, v. Verizon, Idearc/SuperMedia, et al, case pending in the Dallas Federal Court.
Of course, the civil action (a/k/a lawsuit) was started because about 2,000 Verizon retirees were involuntarily transferred from
Verizon sponsored pension plans into Idearc sponsored pension plans. Idearc was a company that inevitably went bankrupt. After
Idearc's bankruptcy proceedings ended, the corporation changed its name to SuperMedia. Even today, things don't look very good
for SuperMedia. Just a few weeks ago former CEO Scott Klein abruptly resigned his job position. A primary objective of the Murphy
case is to get all transferred retirees restored into Verizon sponsored pension plans. Of course, there is a panoply of other equitable
relief requested, all of which is set forth in the pending Amended Complaint, a copy of which is posted at the
retirees' website: http://www.belltelretirees.org/images/stories/docket06- amendedcomplaint.pdf
Last month, the bankruptcy court appointed trustee filed a lawsuit against Verizon. While that case concerns investors, it, too is
attacking the same erstwhile transaction, Verizon's 'spinoff' of the directory pages division into Idearc. In its lawsuit, the bankruptcy
trustee makes the pointed accusation that the entire transaction was fraudulent from get go and that top officers knew that Idearc
was certain to fail as an on-going business. Both the bankruptcy trustee's case and our Murphy case are being handled by the
same judge, Dallas Federal Senior Judge A. Joe Fish.
In our Murphy case, we sued both Verizon and Idearc/SuperMedia. Naturally, the big corporations hired numerous big law firms to
serve as their respective defense attorneys. Thus far, the defense teams of lawyers have argued everything possible to get the
Murphy case dismissed. I am happy to report to you that the Murphy case is alive and kicking. Yesterday, I received an order from
Senior Federal Judge A. Joe Fish, and this is a brief explanation of his rulings. If you want more detail, the October 18, 2010 dated
order, which is attached hereto and will soon be posted at the retirees' website, can be viewed at this URL:
https://ecf.txnd.uscourts.gov/cgi-bin/show_public_doc?2009cv2262-33
In short, Senior Judge Fish dismissed only one claim we tried to pursue against Verizon. The claim that has been dismissed is an
ERISA based theory that the Texas based federal courts have only allowed to be applied by a worker who claims he or she was
terminated from his or her job in order for the company to avoid paying him or her various pension, medical or disability benefits.
And, the Texas based federal courts have uniformly ruled that a complaining fired worker must start his or lawsuit within 2 years
after being fired. Well, our Murphy case does not involve anyone being 'fired' from a job position. In our Murphy case, we were the
first to try and get a federal court to expand that claim so as to include retired persons 'expelled' from a pension plan. While not
addressing the 'fired worker' versus 'retiree' status issue, Senior Judge Fish ruled that particular novel claim had to be started within
2 years after the alleged wrongdoing. I was not engaged to represent the rights of any Verizon/Idearc involuntarily transferred
retiree until more than two years after Verizon's November 2006 transfer of retirees into Idearc sponsored pension plans. Since we
started the lawsuit in November 2009, more than two years after the spin-off of Idearc, Senior Judge Fish ruled that we cannot go
. . . .
21
February 2011
forward with the one novel claim we were trying to pursue against Verizon. Anyhow, do not get worried. Even with that novel claim
getting dismissed, we have plenty of weaponry left in our arsenal. All other claims asserted against Verizon are still pending in the
Murphy lawsuit.
Insofar as our claims asserted against SuperMedia entities, Senior Judge Fish took an expected very conservative approach and
ruled that certain documents we had requested before the lawsuit was filed did not have to be disclosed by SuperMedia.
Unfortunately, ERISA, the only federal law that applies to this situation, requires only a limited specifically list of documents be
disclosed when requested. Senior Judge Fish took a very conservative approach to the law and ruled we can claim no wrong by
SuperMedia's refusal to give us certain requested documents. However, other federal judges have taken the opposite position and
they would have found SuperMedia was wrong not to give us the requested documents. Also, Senior Judge Fish ruled that
SuperMedia's pension plans did not need to be named defendants, because SuperMedia's pension plans had done nothing wrong.
This ruling has no practical effect on the outcome of the Murphy case, because we did include Verizon's pension plans as named
defendants. More importantly, Senior Judge Fish ruled that our claim could proceed against SuperMedia pension plan fiduciaries
for failure to give retirees a full and fair consideration of their claims before filing the lawsuit. You will recall from my prior email
updates and reports that SuperMedia gave all retirees a proverbial poke-in-the-eye and ignored efforts to resolve the retirees'
dispute before the Murphy case was filed. There are many other claims pending in the Murphy case which is now back on track and
going forward. The next task for our side to complete is to file a motion for class certification, and I will be working on that project
with our Dallas-based co-counsel Bob Goodman. He and I plan to meet in Dallas next Tuesday.
The Murphy case is unique. It is the first case where retirees have challenged a decision by a corporation to send them off into a
newly formed corporation without the retirees' consent. For sure, this is not going to be an easy legal challenge. The Murphy case
is one of first impression to be grappled by a Federal Judge. Therefore, I hope you will remain both patient and financially
supportive of your Association of BellTel Retirees, as we continue this sojourn for your benefit and for the benefit of all other
retirees who never want to find themselves in the same predicament as the retirees who were involuntarily transferred out of
Verizon sponsored pension plans.
I will respond to your welcomed emailed questions, comments, criticisms, and suggestions.

February Gardening
Checklist
Summer fading,
winter comes--
Frosty mornings,
tingling thumbs,
Last chance before
March activity
February
Window robins, winter rooks,
And the picture story-books.
is cold and dreary in many parts of the country, but it's important to do as much
preparatory work as you can this month, because once March comes you'll have dozens of garden
chores that seemingly need to be done all at once.
Make sure all your tools have been cleaned, sharpened, and are ready to go. There
is nothing quite as vexing as having a perfectly good weekend opportunity to mow the lawn
only to discover that the blades are dull or it otherwise needs service. It's your last best
chance to get your implements in prime working order this month. Waiting could result in
longer wait times as other procrastinators discover the same thing.
It's a good time to inventory your supplies including seeds too. Seeds, if kept dry and
cool, will often be just as good as they were last year. Use them up, but don't rely on them.
Now is the time to build the trellis for your indeterminate tomatoes, squash, and gourds, so
purchase materials this month.
Have you made your plan of what you want to grow this year?
If you plan to start from seed, have you ordered your seeds?
Set up flats for starting seeds. Full spectrum lighting and a heat mat can facilitate
growing a variety of annuals, perennials, and vegetables for this year's garden.
Do you want to add arbors or other support structures? Order now to have them
delivered before your plants go in the ground.
If you have a garage or workshop, repair and repaint garden furniture this month.
Once you plan your plantings, pots, and beds, you can design an irrigation system that
can save you time and money in more efficient watering for a maximum yield.
Prune shrubs and trees especially fruit trees this month if they don't bleed (like elms and
maples) or bloom early (lilacs, rhodies, and azalea).
Destroy insect eggs before they hatch. Inspect, pick off, and destroy without resorting
to pesticides if you can.
Prune grapes. Trim oldest wood and leave only primary stems. Each stem should have
four to six canes from last years growth.
Build frames for new raised beds.

“Helping Members Keep In Touch”
Dear Alumni,
On behalf of the Directory Alumni Council, I would like to extend a warm welcome and congratulate you
as you conclude your career with Directory.
Our Directory Alumni Council was founded on November 23, 1987 by a wonderful group of people like
you, who thought it might be nice to stay in touch with some of their friends after they have left the
company.
Annual dues is $15.00. Membership brings you our informative newsletter, a copy of the Membership
Directory, flyers of upcoming events, and timely e-mail notification of information of interest to the Alumni.
The Directory Alumni Council is a great way to stay in touch. Our organization is made up of former
Directory employees and has all the attributes of a close-knit family. We do care for each other and try to
be there for one another whenever there is a need. We do hope you will join us for the nominal $15
dues.
Again, on behalf of the Directory Alumni Council, Congratulations and Best Wishes for the years ahead.
Sincerely,
Claire M. Palmer
