Sixth Sunday of Easter
Acts 10:44-48
Psalm 98
1 John 5:1-6
John 15:9-17
This Sunday's image
of the life the risen
Christ shares with us
is the image of
friendship. We are
called to serve others
as Jesus came to
serve; but for John's
gospel, the image of
servanthood is too
hierarchical, too distant, to capture the
essence of life with
Christ. Friendship
captures the love, the
joy, the deep mutuality of the relationship
into which Christ invites us. The Greeks
believed that true
friends are willing to
die for each other.
This is the mutual
love of Christian
community commanded by Christ and
enabled by the Spirit.

From the desk of Pastor Bahe…
The Grandfather’s Wisdom (an adaptation of a Cherokee legend)
An old Grandfather said to his grandson, who came to him with a complaint about a friend, "Let me tell you a story.
I too, at times, have felt a need to criticize and complain about all sorts of
things to all kinds of people. But complaining instead of looking for the best in
others wears you down. I guess God had it right in the eighth commandment when
He told us to always shed the best light on our neighbors’ actions.
I have struggled in my life to stop complaining and to realize that my words have the potential to make or
break someone else’s day. And still, in this world, people seem more interested in tearing down, rather
than building up, so I find myself complaining way too often.” He continued, "It is as if there are two
wolves inside me. One is good and does no harm. He lives in harmony with all around him. He tries to
give people the benefit of the doubt, he trusts that everyone is doing their best. He seeks to use his words
to build up, rather than tear down. He looks for the blessings he is surrounded with, instead of finding
things to complain about.
But the other wolf, ah! He is full of darkness. The littlest thing will send him into complaining and whining. He sees the worst in everyone, way too often, for no reason. He cannot think because he is always
waiting in the woods, ready to point out everyone else’s faults.
It is pointless complaining. Because it is never done to help, he never pitches in; just sits back in the
woods and complains. This wolf is so good at throwing the stones, pointing out the splinter in everyone
else’s eyes. And never realizes the destruction he causes. Tearing down hope, dismantling community,
and darkening the hearts of those who day after day, hour after hour give their all, those who would blossom and grow with even a few words of thanks or encouragement.
Sometimes, it is hard to live with these two wolves inside me, for both of them try to dominate my spirit.”
The boy looked intently into his Grandfather's eyes and asked,
"Which one wins, Grandfather?”. The Grandfather smiled and quietly said, "The one I feed."
The sad part is, more than likely it will be the people who complain very little who will take this story to
heart, rather than the ones for whom this complaining has become a way of life. St, Paul writes about how
we are to be in community with each other. Guess which wolf he would have us feed?
My dear, dear friends of LOTH, God has richly, richly blessed you. I pray deeply that you will find that in
each other. That you will feed the wolf that encourages one another. And, that you would look at your
amazing staff and offer them encouragement. Give them thanks for their dedication. For the hours they
put in, the energy they willingly give to this place. That you would see that the work your council does
always seeks the best for this place they love, just as much as you do. That you would know that the God
of hope would never, never let you fail in your mission as a congregation. That God has provided for you
in the past… why would you worry about His providence in the future? You are a congregation that has
blessing upon blessing upon blessing from God. You have much to look forward to, much to give thanks
for… and really, so very, very little to complain about. And my second prayer is that you will see these
words as words offered in deep love for each of you, and for LOTH.
Watchword for the
Week: Make a joyful
noise to the Lord, all the
earth; break forth into
joyous song and sing
praises. Psalm 98:4
They shall know that I,
the Lord their God, am
with them, and that they,
the house of Israel, are
my people, says the Lord
God. Ezekiel 34:30
Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and proclaim to
her that her hard service
has been completed, that
her sin has been paid for.
Isaiah 40:2
Gideon answered the angel of the Lord, “If the
Lord is with us, why then
has all this happened to
us?” Judges 6:13
What we see now is like
a dim image in a mirror;
then we shall see face-to
-face. What I know now
is only partial; then it will
be complete-as complete
as God’s knowledge of
me. 1 Corinthians 13:12
I will give you as a light to
the nations, that my salvation may reach to the
end of the earth.
Isaiah 49:6
You will be my witnesses
in Jerusalem, in all Judea
and Samaria, and to the
ends of the earth.
Acts 1:8
It is good for the heart to
be strengthened by
grace. Hebrews 13:9
