40th Anniversary
Creations Star Trek Sacramento Convention
By Lt Melissa Lauritzen - XO, USS Oberon
With the 40th Anniversary Star Trek Creation Convention came a few wonderful things, including our first club table
in nearly a decade at a convention, three new members, and meeting many new and interesting people! We wound up
being stuck in the back of the vendors room with the guest actors who were selling autographs. We did have the pleasure of being located right next to (a.k.a. nearly inside their space) the Lightspeed Fine Arts dealer, so not only were we
able to get to know them but bask in the beauty of their products. While we were not at the front of the vendor’s area
as two of the other Star Trek clubs in the area, word quickly spread that the USS Oberon was a Starfleet International
charter and we received many inquiries regarding what Starfleet was, the benefits of joining a Starfleet affiliated club,
and for those non-locals, where the nearest Starfleet chapter to them was located. (We even gave information to a
Canadian on the process to start up a chapter in her area). While it may have been a spur-of-the-moment idea on my
part to bring my Starfleet membership packet to the convention (just in case) it turned out to be a fantastic idea as the
Vessel Registry wound up getting plenty of use for referring individuals to many charters throughout the world.
We also had the pleasure of meeting select crew from the USS Angeles (please forgive me and my terrible memory for names), the USS Onizuka (whom we sent contact information with many possible new members), and a few of
the guest stars (Sean Kenney and his lovely wife, Charlie Brill, and his wife Mitzi McCall). Thanks to the generosity of
the Lightspeed dealer we were able to use some of their electricity and brought the XO’s LCD TV and portable DVD
player to play various Star Trek movies and episodes. Thanks to one of our newest members, Ensign Mark Aron, who
brought a good part of his Star Trek DVD collection we were able to play all the episodes that Sean Kenney and Charlie Brill guest-starred in, much to their delight. We showed Charlie Brill’s (who by Saturday informally adopted those
manning the table as family) episodes first, it was quite interesting to see his reaction when he realized that we were
showing one of “his” episodes. (He was like a kid in a candy store). When it was Sean Kenney’s turn he actually got
up and sat at our table thinking back on what it was like to be part of the Star Trek experience. By the end of the weekend we were on a first name basis with Sean Kenney and Charlie and Mitzi felt insulted if we didn’t address them as
“Ma and Pa” while they addressed us as “kids”.
As the convention winded down on Sunday we were all exhausted but had a fantastic time, met new friends, introduced many new people to Starfleet and we are looking forward to next year. (This time hopefully we can talk with the
Quartermaster about possibly selling Starfleet merchandise at the table *if Creations allows it* as we had many people
interested in purchasing my Starfleet bumper sticker that I had displayed on the table).

The FUNny Pages
FCPT Unicorn, Editor
Greetings 4th Fleet and Beyond,
With this issue, marks my one year Anniversary as your Editor and what a year it has been. First I had to
learn a program that I had never worked with before, and in a matter of less then 5 days, produce my first
newsletter for publication. It was that same issue which I later submitted and won the STARFLEET 2005
Best Newsletter of the Year Award with. Since that first issue, I have tried to continue to make each issue
better then the one before it, either with graphics, new layouts, colors and by including regular columns/items.
However as I’ve always said I could have never done it with YOU, the R4 membership. However there are
some folks I would like to single out.
A BIG THANK-YOU to my regular contributors Jackie Bundy (Readin’ while Trekkin and numerous articles), Cyndi Temple (SFMC 4th Brigade), as well as the R4 Regional Staff members, whom for the most part
submitted on time, while others need additional reminding that deadlines exist. Thanks also to folks like Truman Temple (On the Rec Deck) and Pete Briggs (Empire Eavesdropping). And I can not forget the various
Ships and their crewmembers who helped make each issue special, with their various submissions, some of
which became cover articles.
Some things worked (Congratulations, Stardates & Cadet Review), and some things did not (Trivia contest). Some items I’m still trying to get completed (Ship meeting information for each Ship and current up to
date contact information), while some items have taken me a while to finally get include (the STARFLEET
application will now appear as the final page of each issue). I’m still looking for new ideas and columns, so if
you would like to see something let me know. I’ll give it a try and see if it sticks.
Although I personally was not able to attend this years R4 Conference, I did get some great pictures from
our current Vice RC Chrissy Killian, that appear in the Cadet Review (p 28). Had someone submitted an article or two, I would have included them too, but I can not print, what I don’t have. Starting with this issue till
next summer, we will now have a IC 2007 ad and they even have a Registration page (p 30) to help you join
the FUN in Denver. Speaking of IC’s, our Vice Commander of STARFLEET gave a great speech in Philly,

ADM. Ed Nowlin
First off, we have two choices for the new Regional Coordinator of Region 4. Rear Admiral Chrissy Killian and Captain
Jeff Salamon achieved enough nominations to be considered
official candidates. If your CO hasn't submitted a ballot, urge
them to do so. One of these two will be guiding Region 4 into
the future, and this is one of your few opportunities to make
your voice heard.
Second, I offer my congratulations to newly minted Captain Gordon Mehrten of the USS PeaceKeeper and Commodore Janice Willcocks of the USS Angeles. Well done!
Now....
"It's been a looong road....."
That's what I think sums it up best, really. We had a small
but fun crowd at the 2006 Region 4 Conference here in Redding. We discussed some of the things that happened at this
years IC in Philadelphia, did some stargazing, walked the Sundial Bridge and played Mini Golf and held the first ever
"STARFLEET 500", and I still say if I hadn't gotten cut off by a
Borglet, I'd won ;)
Unfortunately, I pushed myself waaaay too hard in the
week prior to the conference and wound up so sick on Sunday
I literally laid in bed until I had to get up that night to go to
work, but by all accounts, a successful trip to Shasta Dam was
had, and Fleet Captain Harmon managed to catch his flight
home (Sorry about that, Boyd!)
Rather than go on with this, I would like to share my welcoming comments that were in the Program Book (Mucho
Thanks to Gumby for getting it done so QUICKLY!):
-----
Welcome to Redding!
As Commanding Officer of Cascade Station, I welcome
those of you who have come up for the 2006 STARFLEET
Region 4 Conference. We have quite a few fun things planned
for you all over the weekend, and it is my hope that despite the
low attendance numbers and the re-shuffling of the schedule
of events, a good time will be had.
I also write this with heavy heart as this will be the last
welcome I write for a Regional Conference Program as your
Regional Coordinator. Overall, I have to say I've had a good
run, but as the saying goes, All good things must come to an
end. During the last 8.5 years, we've managed to bring together things that my predecessors never imagined possible,
such as the two Western Conferences in 2000 and 2001 cohosted with Regions 5 and 17 and of course, the 2002 STARFLEET International Conference, by far my proudest moment
as Regional Coordinator, especially considering the obstacles
we overcame to pull it off after the tragedy of September 11th,
2001.
I would be remiss if I did not thank the people on the Regional Staff throughout the years that made it all possible.

erations, RAdm. Jerry Tien. My 2nd VRC, Current CO of the
USS Gallant and R4 Central Sector Chief, Past Regional Webmaster, Radio STARFLEET Founder and IC Webcast Master,
Comm. Larry Barnes and of course, my current VRC, the always
loveable and cuddly RAdm. "Evil Kryssi" Chrissy Killian.
I also want to thank those who have served in one capacity
or another on Region 4 Staff:
Comm. Ramon Macias - Past Region 4 Newsletter Editor
and winner of the 2000 STARFLEET Newsletter Award
for Best Regional Publication
FCapt. (Now Klingon) Pete Briggs - Past R4 Northern
Sector Chief
Comm. "Shut Up" Bruce Sherrick - Past R4 RDC Director
FCapt. Karen Englebeck - Past R4 Webmaster
FCapt. Charles Flowers - Past R4 Eastern Sector Chief
FCapt. Boyd Harmon (Or is it Harmon Boyd?) - Past R4
Northern Sector Chief, Current R4 Awards Director
FCapt. Charlie Werner - Past R4 Central Sector Chief
Comm. Jennifer Cole - Current R4 Eastern Sector Chief
and Past RDC-Sciences
FCapt. J. Unicorn Escobedo - Current Region 4 Newsletter Editor and winner of the 2005 STARFLEET Newsletter Award for Best Overall Newsletter
FCapt. Robin Smith - Current R4 Webmaster
And of course, I saved the best for last....Admiral Jonathan "Gumby Damnit!" Simmons - Current R4 ShOC
Director, Chief of Staff and unofficial "R4 Cheerleader".
To all of you, as well as any of you who have ever chaired a
R4 Conference, I offer my most deeply heartfelt thanks.
Now where did I leave my wallet and has anybody seen

Not much going on within the 4th Brigade since the end of summer and
the International Conference. Most units are reporting readiness for Fall
activities.
1st and 11th MSGs are again participating in the SFMC Reading Challenge. Last year; the 1st MSG took home two of the top awards:
≤ Most read Marine
≤ Youth Reading champion
Monika Reinholz and Vivian Wentworth were both recognized for their
community activities: Community Service Citation:
1st MSG is looking to march in the San Bernardino YMCA Christmas
parade and has issued a open invitation for ALL 4th BDE Marines to participate. Would be a good way to get a lot of the Marines in the same spot,
same day and earn the Brigade Muster award, before the year ends.
B^d Beh^vior Hurts Us @ll
By: VADM Sal Lizard - Vice Commander, STARFLEET
One of the reasons that I wanted to serve on the Executive
Committee was because I really thought that I could make a difference. I think I made a difference as the CompOps Chief and I
really want to make a difference as the Vice-Commander of our
STARFLEET. To that end I'd like to ask you to consider my
thoughts on the matter of membership abuse:
Ever go back and re-read a good book? Or just review a
handbook at work? I was recently re-reading our STARFLEET
Membership Handbook I would like to bring up a list that I would
hope you would recognize:
1. I will always behave in a manner that brings
credit to the Fleet, my ship, and myself.
2. I will always praise in public and critique in private.
3. I will show courtesy to my subordinates, fellow
officers, and superior officers at all times.
4. I will never assume, but always verify.
5. I will be resolute in the performance of my duty
and the execution of Fleet policy and regulation.
6. I will always diffuse confrontations, not cause
them.
7. I will listen to both sides of a dispute and act
upon fact, not innuendo.
8. I will strive for impartiality and fairness in judgment and disqualify myself from decisions where my
judgment may be compromised.
9. I will be the first to praise and the last to criticize.
10. I will always strive to be part of the solution, not
part of the problem.
That’s the STARFLEET Officers’ Code of Conduct from our
STARFLEET Membership Handbook. But notice that it wasn’t
from the Officers’ Membership Handbook. Nor was it from the
Enlisted Members’ Membership Handbook. That’s because our
membership handbook is for all members, officer and enlisted.
And while it is written as the STARFLEET Officer’s Code of Conduct, the membership handbook prefaces it with these words:
”In addition to your membership rights, there
are also membership responsibilities that must be
considered, and which are equally important. Nowhere else are the responsibilities of membership
in STARFLEET better outlined than in the ten
points of the STARFLEET Officer’s Code of Conduct.”
Our handbook is full of similar verbiage about our deport-
ment towards one another. We are told in Section 02:07 that
”The main thrust of STARFLEET has always
been to uphold and espouse the philosophy of Star
Trek— with tolerance, brotherhood, mutual cooperation, and compassionate justice its worthy
goals.”
Of course all STARFLEET members have a guarantee that
STARFLEET will fully investigate allegations of misconduct and
even unfair treatment. But if all of us are actually following the
Officers’ Code of Conduct, there should be very little for the Inspector General to investigate. I wish that were the case. Since
sitting in the Vice-Commander’s seat, I’ve learned that it’s not. I
have received far too many complaints from members who have
sent me copies of private emails and chat logs filled with unsubstantiated “facts”, accusations, profanity, threats and abusive
language. People have told me that they’re not renewing or are
leaving because of the abuse they have received by these
“officers” of our organizations.
I have seen first-hand how certain members profane, provoke and harass members but then dismiss it with a semi-public,
albeit, insincere apology. I say “insincere” because they seem to
wait a short time before re-attacking the same or a different
member in much the same manner. And we, as an organization,
can ’t keep excusing this behavior. It no longer matters what contributions were made in the past if the present disregards fellow
members and their enjoyment of STARFLEET.
Section 02:08 of our STARFLEET Membership Handbook
tells us that
”It is the policy of STARFLEET that harassment or misconduct, defined as behavior by one
member perpetrated upon another member that
would be construed as illegal under local, county,
state, provincial, federal, or international law, will
not be tolerated at any time.”
Many cities, states and provinces have laws against harassing behavior but STARFLEET seems to support it by not adequately confronting it and disposing of it in a manner that sends
the appropriate message that we will not tolerate members abusing members. Sometimes, STARFLEET doesn’t even remove
these abusers from their leadership positions within the organization! It should matter not where and when abuse happens, that
fact that it happens should be enough.

Sacramento Con Report
By LCDR Jackie Bundy - U.S.S. Angeles
September 8, 2006
fans world-wide celebrated the 40th Anniversary of Star Trek.
The occasion was
commemorated in a
lot of different ways
but my son Andrew
and I decided to honor the anniversary by attending the Star Trek
convention held that weekend in Sacramento.
The convention guests were Marc Alaimo, Armin Shimerman,
Dominic Keating, John De Lancie, Leonard Nimoy and William
Shatner. Michael and Denise Okuda made a surprise appearance
on Saturday with footage to show of the newly remastered TOS
episodes and when I saw the original footage and the remastered
side by side and the difference in clarity was startling.
We arrived on Friday about an hour before the convention
was set to start and after checking out the dealer’s room we met
up with Boyd Harmon before we went to find our seats. Marc
Alaimo was the first guest on Friday. He was a last minute addition when Robbie Duncan McNeil had to bow out at the last moment when he got a directing gig.
Marc and Armin both shared a few stories of their time on the
Deep Space 9 sets and took questions from the audience. Marc
also talked a bit about his pet Wolf and when asked about what he
was up to now he stated that he has retired and is quite content to
just make the occasional convention appearance.
Armin talked about his recent work on Boston Legal, where
he has a recurring guest role as a judge that will last at least the
first 5 or 6 episodes of the season with more appearances a possibility. As of the time of the convention though he had had no
scenes with Shatner or Rene Auberjonois.
Armin also said that he was the only one who didn't take a
piece of the Deep Space 9 set, explaining that he couldn't bear to
go in and see the sets being torn down. He said his memories
were enough for him.
Andrew asked him about playing a woman in the episode
"Profit and Loss" and he said that when he was in the female suit
everyone made a point of "feeling him up"
and that he modeled his performance after Dustin Hoffman in
"Tootsie".
Keating and Shimerman were the Saturday guests and Dominic Keating was already drinking although it was quite early in the
day when he came on stage. He told a few funny stories about
the recent Las Vegas convention and talked about his role in the
new Species movie.
John De Lancie, who was there Friday, showed a brief clip
from a movie he recently finished called Teenius and mentioned
an upcoming film with Don Cheadle. He also said he's been doing a lot of directing lately including the opera Tosca and that his
next directing project is 12 Angry Men for NPR.
De Lancie also shared the story of how he almost didn’t take
the role of “Q” and fielded a few questions about his days as a
soap opera actor.
Attendance was light on Friday, high on Saturday but Sunday
the place was packed to the rafters for William Shatner and
Leonard Nimoy and they had to turn folks away.
Nimoy took the stage first and told the story of his and
Shatner’s first Hollywood Christmas Parade when the announcer got his name wrong and then went on to tell several
very funny stories about encounters over the years with rabid
fans.
When asked about the new Star Trek film Nimoy said
that he had every confidence in J.J. Abrams but that he had
not been asked as yet to participate in any way but that if
asked he said that he would consider it. Nimoy then contradicted himself moments later when asked if he would consider playing a younger version of Sarek in the movie if offered enough money and he stated quite clearly that he had
no intention of acting or directing ever again and that his photography was his creative outlet now and he was content with
his life which he described as wonderful and fulfilling.
When Nimoy called William Shatner out to join him the
good natured ribbing began. Nimoy teased Shatner about his
love of food and Shatner teased him about never picking up
the check when they went out together. Shatner fielded a lot
of questions about Boston Legal and deftly sidestepped any
questions he didn't want to answer--the man is a master at
handling the crowd.
Some stories Shatner shared--he admitted he's afraid of
heights so the Yosemite climbing shoot was hard for him and
talked about Patrick Stewart being bothered by horses so he
said he gave him advice during the horseback riding scenes
in Star Trek: Generations—his advice, wear woman’s panty
hose to avoid his legs being rubbed raw during the long hours
in the saddle.
Watching Shatner and Nimoy together I couldn't help but
think of Burns and Allen (with Nimoy playing Burns) but they
compared themselves to the Smothers Brothers and their
appearance was definitely the highlight of the weekend.

A Review of the Creations Convention
By: ENS Mark Aron - USS Oberon
This was my first Star Trek convention of any type and so I
would like to start off with my comments on the show itself, followed up by my thoughts on the guest speakers.
Prior to my attending the Creations 40th Anniversary Star
Trek Convention, my experience with these types of venues
came from the following sources:
~ As a teenager and young adult, visiting my father at
the booth that the company he was working for at
the time, had at the famous “Silicon West” semiconductor trade shows held at the time in the Bay
Area. (Mid 1970's to the late 1980's).
~ Various hobby shows involving model railroading
and trains.
~ Attending many travel conventions, particularly
those sponsored by the travel industry magazine Travel Age West.
When I arrived to work at our club’s table inside the dealer’s
room, I was surprised of how few vendors there were in the
dealer’s room. I clearly understand that Creations has their own
products to sell and that is why they operate these shows, however given that Creations has a cut of every revenue stream generated from that show (including such small things as renting
instead of donating tables to the guest actors who were selling
their autographs at the show). I would have thought that by having more vendors, you might draw more traffic and sell more
passes. I even saw Creations force people to either buy high
priced passes after general admission was sold out or told them
to go away. Why could there not have been a cheaper pass to
let them into the dealer’s room, where they could have sold more
stuff?
While I will gladly work future shows, I was just surprised
that a vendor who is supposed to be one of the major vendors for
Sci-Fi/fantasy conventions runs such a poor operation. Now that
I finished my rant, let me get to the good part, the stars.
did not have a major part in a particular episode so he could
shoot his role on Buffy). Because of the fact that for Buffy, he
needed no more make-up than any other “normal” actor. In
addition, unlike the TNG set which has something of a reputation for being a haven for practical jokers, the DS9 set was
rather straight-laced and serious. By comparison, the Buffy set,
because it had so many young actors on it, enjoyable because
you never knew what was going to happen next.
He next told a funny story about a serious event. Back in
1994, when the Northridge earthquake happened, Mr. Shimerman was in full make-up when he needed to contact his family,
he left the studio, and drove home avoiding the freeway, and
when he arrived home, he inspected the damage. (Leaving the
studio in make-up was a full violation of his contract with Paramount), and could you imagine what people thought (who were
already shaken up) by seeing an alien driving down the street,
holding the wheel in one hand and his glasses in the other in
front of his face ( Me. Shimerman needs them to drive).
The next couple of stories were his part time role of a judge
on Boston Legal. First how much fun it was to cross swords
once again with Rene Auberjonois (who plays one of the lawyers who works for the law firm along with William Shatner and
David Spader). Once again Odo and Quark were at each other
again. The other story was about one episode of Boston Legal
near the end of last season when that week’s guest star was
none other than Jeri Ryan. What was funny was Mr. Shimer-
(Continued on page 16)
Armin Shimerman - aka “Quark”
When I went to see Mr. Shimerman, they were running late
and when I got there I wished that I had come up sooner because they were wrapping up the preview of the cgi (computer
generated images) rework to many fx (special effects) shots for
the original series, and if that was not cool enough, this preview
was done by Michael and Denise Okauda (who have been involved in either art design or fx work on most every Star Trek TV
or movie project from TNG to Enterprise) and they were just
wrapping up their Q & A and they left Sacramento shortly thereafter. Now I am not much for autographs, but they were two people where I might have made an exception.
Then the house lights went down, and to the song “Master of
the House” from the musical version of Les Miserables (which I
had never heard before, but it was a rather catchy tune) they
showed a video of clips showing “Quark”, always with a new plan
to rake in the latinum, but also with just a tiny bit of scruples,
which is always dangerous for a Ferengi to have. And then Mr.
Shimerman came on the stage, he started (and ended as well)
with Quark’s trademark scream/squeal, then launched into his
storytelling and the Q & A. He talked about despite having 7
years job security and having fun on DS9, he enjoyed his secondary role on Buffy the Vampire Slayer more (by informal agreement he was allowed afternoons off during weeks where Quark

Pocket Books is releasing two new titles this November
that I cannot praise highly enough and are, in my humble
opinion, a must-have for every library. With the holidays fast
approaching either would make an ideal gift for any Star Trek
fan.
From the early short-story adaptations in the 60’s, and
the first original novels in the 70’s right up to today Star Trek
fiction has expanded the Star Trek universe for fans world
wide, allowing them to appreciate the rich tapestry that is Star
Trek in a whole new way through the power of prose narrative. But there has never been a written source that provides
fans with a definitive overview or reference to that fiction until
now. Researched and written by Jeff Ayers, Voyages of the
Imagination, The Star Trek Fiction Companion is a superb
book that covers the first forty years of professionally published Star Trek fiction.
Organized into four parts, Voyages of the Imagination
covers the entire gamut of Star Trek fiction. Part one covers
the Bantam era, part two the Ballantine books and part three
the titles published by Pocket Books. Part four is an updated
comprehensive fiction timeline that places each novel or short
story in its proper place in the Star Trek chronology.
Part three is, naturally, the most extensive since Pocket
Books has held the publishing license since 1979 and is further broken down by each series, covering both the numbered and unnumbered novels. Be it novelizations, miniseries, anthologies or young adult fiction it’s all here.
Listed in order of production each detailed entry includes
the title, author, page count, month and year of publication
and either a spoiler free plot synopsis or table of contents.
Fully illustrated with black and white versions of the cover art
for each book, Voyages of Imagination is indexed by title and
author.
With Jeff Ayers background as a librarian, he knows
what information makes for an excellent reference title but
Ayers has taken Voyages of the Imagination a step further by
providing glimpses into the thought processes behind the
creation of the fiction, a kind of oral history.
Over three hundred of the authors and editors involved in
producing the nearly six hundred books currently available
express in their own words how their stories came to be, and
their individual personalities and sensibilities come through
loud and clear as they expand on things like why they were
drawn to write Star Trek and where they got their story inspirations from. Many of the authors and editors have been
interviewed before but Ayers manages to bring new information to light. The comments aren’t always positive but they
are honest.
At almost 800 pages, Voyages of the Imagination (Trade
paperback, $21) is a pretty hefty book and while it isn’t the
type of book many people may sit down and read cover to
cover it is the type of book that is a pleasure to gradually digest.
The other book I’d like to tell you about is Ships of the
Line, which was edited by Margaret Clark and Doug Drexler.

spectacular images from the highly acclaimed Star Trek: Ships of
the Line calendars. Gloriously rendered, each of these illustrations
was created exclusively for Pocket Books. The accompanying text
by Michael Okuda brings the story of each of these valiant ships to
life.
Not every image used in every calendar is included in the
book, rather Margaret and Doug have chosen their favorites and
those they feel are most representative of the various races that
populate the Star Trek universe but those they have chosen are
incredible and at just $19.95 this hardcover Ships of the Line book
is a great value and it arrives in stores and online retailers along
with Voyages of the Imagination this November.

Heard Morn Say
Compiled from various sources
Nichols Loved Returning to Enterprise Bridge
Happy to be playing Uhura once more in the internet film
Of Gods and Men, Nichelle Nichols spoke about her friendships with fellow Star Trek alumni and celebrating the series'
40th anniversary.
"To have been away and come back on the bridge [of the
Enterprise] that was in upstate New York that was just mind
blowing," Nichols told iF Magazine. "Stepping out of that elevator and onto the bridge for the first time, my line was to be
'As I live and breathe.' I had practiced it because I would be
seeing Chekov and friends again, but when I came out and
saw the bridge my line came out '(trembling voice) Well as I
live and breathe.' I was literally back on the ship, except that
it’s a museum."
In Of Gods and Men, Nichols plays a version of Uhura in
an alternate Star Trek timeline. "The nice part about it is it is
40 years later...there’s not an age consideration, it’s already
taken care of, and that was lovely to play." She was very impressed with the sets and design of the Enterprise and called
it "really gratifying and lovely" to work with the guest performers. In addition, "The script for the most part was so well
done."
Though she has occasionally encountered all of her Star
Trek co-stars at events and film premieres - she roasted William Shatner (Kirk) at a recent event for Comedy Central she is closest with Leonard Nimoy (Spock), Walter Koenig
(Chekov) and George Takei (Sulu), saying that socially and
politically, she is extremely compatible with them. She was
also very close with the late James Doohan (Scotty), and
says of Majel Barrett Roddenberry (Chapel), "We've always
been good friends...it’s always wonderful to see her. When
we run into each other we head for a lounge and climb in a
booth and order champagne and yak about old times."
Nichols does not feel that the Star Trek sequels were in
any way competitors with the original series, saying, "We
became heroes that were set up in such a way that allowed
fans to enjoy the subsequent ones without comparison to
us...then everything else was able to stand on its own, and
some did that rather brilliantly." She has not yet seen the remastered episodes of her own series.
Spock's Mother, 'Father Knows Best' Star Jane
Wyatt Remembered
Jane Wyatt, television icon and mother to Spock, died
peacefully at her Bel-Air home in California last Friday, Oct.
20th, 2006. She was 96. A stage, film and television star,
Wyatt is best remembered as the supportive and iconic
mother Margaret Anderson in Father Knows Best, alongside
Robert Young.
It was for this role that she won three Emmys in a row
(1958-60). Star Trek fans will of course remember Wyatt as
Spock's caring mother and Sarek's devoted wife Amanda in
"Journey to Babel," a role she reprised in "Star Trek IV: The
Voyage Home."
In her private life, Wyatt achieved another type of success. She married Edgar Bethune Ward, a businessman, in
1935 and they remained together for 65 years until his death in
2000. The couple had two sons, Christopher and Michael Ward.
Wyatt was born in 1910 in Campgaw, N.J. to a drama critic
mother and Wall Street investor father. She studied at Barnard
College and, following her acting impulses, left to study at Berkshire Playhouse in Stockbridge, Mass. When she later signed a
studio contract at Universal, her professional career was effectively
launched.
In movies, Miss Jane Wyatt (as she was sometimes billed) hit
high marks in Frank Capra's "Lost Horizon" and co-starring with
Cary Grant in "None But the Lonely Heart." While enjoying her
movie work, Wyatt preferred the stage. In order to fulfill this desire
she had a clause in her studio contract that allowed her time off
every year to return to Broadway.
Wyatt's political associations earned her a brief spell on the
Hollywood blacklist in the early '50s. Prior to that, Wyatt was also
castigated in some quarters for being anti-fascist before the United
States entered World War II.
Wyatt is survived by her two sons (mentioned above), two
grandsons, a granddaughter and seven great-grandchildren.
Services for Wyatt will be private. Donations in her memory
can be directed to her long-standing charity the March of Dimes
TV Land Launches Trek in November
In another sign that Star Trek is as popular as ever at age 40,
the classic episodes have found yet another venue for fans to enjoy
them. Cable network TV Land will begin airing the Original Series
next month, starting with marathons running for three days the
weekend of November 17-19, including two airings of "Star Trek II:
The Wrath of Khan."
In the week leading up to that launch, TV Land will schedule
special programming in tribute to Star Trek, including a repeat of
the William Shatner edition of "Living in TV Land" which premiered
last March. In addition, the network will run a series of episodes
from other classic TV shows that feature Star Trek cast members,
such as Gunsmoke with Shatner, Bonanza with Leonard Nimoy
and DeForest Kelley, and Miami Vice with George Takei. Also during the week of Nov. 13th, it will air special "space-themed" episodes from such classic shows as I Love Lucy, Green Acres and
Benson.
The schedule for Star Trek and the special programming has
not been solidified yet, so keep an eye on the TVLand.com Star
Trek page and/or your local listings.
Also in November, TVLand.com (from the same hub page) will
launch other content including a "Star Trek Convention Webumentary," a video clip trivia game, and new interviews with Shatner and
Nimoy. The site will also make full-length TOS episodes available
on-line.
Trek Auction Boldly Goes Into Stratospheric Prices
The auction of Star Trek props, costumes and collectibles from
Paramount more than doubled expectations by Christie's auction

CNN reported that the event was a huge success, with the
single biggest bid coming for a model of The Next Generation's
Enterprise-D: $576,000 to a private American collector. Other big-

man had to break the news to the series crew who assumed that
he and Ms. Ryan knew each other “very well” that if two people
are working on sound stages 50' apart (which was truly the case
with DS9 and Voyager) they might as well be a thousand miles
apart. He had never met Ms. Ryan until that week on Boston
Legal.
William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy
On Sunday I went to the event with William Shatner and
Leonard Nimoy - when I got there Mr. Shatner was finishing up
his solo Q & A. And a few minutes later Mr. Nimoy came on for a
joint appearance. What I remember of this event was more in
the line of impressions than in stories told. Part of the reason
was that some of the questions that were asked were so long,
confusing, and on the silly side that I was surprised anyone could
answer them. There was also a questioner who tried to pull the
same sort of stunt that was pulled in Las Vegas where a questioner asked a blatant political question and George Takei went
off on a rant (which he seems to be doing a lot lately), when that
type of question was asked of Mr. Shatner he blew it off, implying
that the people of the room should be brought together, not divided. Mr. Shatner also spoke of the various charities he was
involved in, particularly a program that involved developmentally
disabled children and horses which seems to have some good
effects. Mr. Shatner and Mr. Nimoy traded good natured barbs
at each other, particularly when they directed each other. At
other times they cracked each other up to the point that they
could hardly talk. It is clear to me that unless both men are better actors than they have ever shown to have been before, then
whatever issues stood between the two men years ago have
clearly been worked out and they are now the best of friends,
and to watch the interaction between the two was just great.
That was really great fun to see.
Bad Behavior (Continued from page 8)
When I was young, there was a saying that “if a customer is
pleased, he will tell two others and you’ll grow. But if he’s displeased, he’ll tell ten and you won’t.” Later, I told my employees
that because of the Internet, a displeased customer will “tell the
world!” That is happening with our organization. People hear
about the troubles of STARFLEET without ever joining the organization and we lose potential members. It hurts our recruiting
and retention efforts. I’m hearing it more and more, no one
wants to pay $15. to put up with the abuse and unpleasantness
of STARFLEET.
My daughter once asked me (I think she was nine or ten
years old at the time) what the difference was between “right”
and “legal” because I admonished her to do what was “right” not
just what is legal. As I explained to her, just because you can do
something legally, it doesn’t necessarily follow that it’s “right”.
Some STARFLEET members choose to act in a manner
34!2$!4%
0>DB
that, on one level or another, unnecessarily grieves other
STARFLEET members but do it in such a manner that they
can claim that they did so outside the purview of STARFLEET.
They may make claims or statements, which deliberately belittle, embarrass, or demean their fellow members from the
“sanctuary” of “unofficial” STARFLEET channels and decry
STARFLEET’s inability to police their actions there.
Don’t misunderstand my intention here, there are some
very good reasons for having communications outside the control of STARFLEET but these channels should not be the
“virtual badlands” of those members who chose to attack and
belittle their fellow members.
I would like to propose that STARFLEET members be
held to a standard of conduct towards one another. When I am
at home, I am still a STARFLEET member, just as I am at work
and at the mall. Actually, I was reminded recently that I am still
the VCS when I make a statement and that all of my statements – wherever they may be (and even in the “unofficial”
channels) – are from the Vice-Commander of STARFLEET.
As a “social organization” I think we should have the ability to require appropriate “social behavior” of our members and
the right to reject “anti-social behavior”. That’s how the organization was designed and we need to quit accepting bad behavior towards other members. As we discuss how to change
this organization to meet our future needs, perhaps we need to
look at adapting behavioral standards and creating a review
process with consequences for misbehaving.
Now our handbook also recognizes that our members are
human and may sometimes unintentionally “hurt” another. OK,
I can see that. Perhaps this is where a “three-strike rule”
should be considered. My fellow STARFLEET members, our
governing documents are full of words that can be interpreted
as rules for conduct within the organization but they are ignored by some of our members. The reason is that these rules
have no consequence attached to them for when they are violated. That is something that needs to be changed. Any policeman can tell you that making it illegal to rob banks won’t keep
people from robbing banks: it’s the penalty for robbing banks
that gives the law force.
It all boils down to this, we each, individually, have the
choice to be a "blessing" or a "blight" to those we meet. But
each of us are members of STARFLEET and that choice can
reflect on STARFLEET. Our members are our greatest asset
and mistreating them also erodes another asset, our reputation. When members, especially newer members, witness the
abuse heaped upon them and others, they can't help but get
discouraged and that hurts the organization as a whole. It's
not right and it must stop. If a member repeatedly abuses
other members, we should be prepared to send them a refund
of their unused membership dues with a note saying, “No,
thanks” and our governing documents should give STARFLEET the authority to do so.
Let’s all members of STARFLEET resolve to do the “right”
thing.

ticket items were a model of the Enterprise-E, which went
for $120,000, and replicas of the starship Voyager and
space station Deep Space Nine, each of which sold for
$132,000. Christie's had estimated that these items would
sell for between $15,000-$35,000. A model of a Klingon
bird of prey ship, first seen in the film Star Trek III: The
Search for Spock, soared to $307,200, or more than 30
times its presale estimate of $8,000 to $12,000. And an
Enterprise-A model made for Star Trek: The Motion Picture and used in later sequels had the distinction of being
the sale's final lot, fetching $284,800. The top costume
price was $144,000 for Dr. McCoy's space suit from the
original Trek series episode "The Tholian Web."
More than a thousand lots in all were auctioned in
New York City to bidders who participated in person, by
phone and online. On Thursday, the first day of the auction, Captain Picard's bridge chair sold for $52,000, nearly
six times its predicted price of $9,000.
An article at StarTrek.com noted that the auction was
far exceeding all expectations. "Picard's Ressikan flute
from 'The Inner Light,' estimated at $800-$1200, started
with an opening bid of $13,000 and ultimately pulled down
$40,000. Whew!" noted the site, while fans on the bulletin
board jokingly asked whether the flute still contained the
saliva of Patrick Stewart for future cloning to justify such
an expenditure.
Catalogues featuring images of many of the items are
still available from Christie's. The web site has posted a
complete list of winners by lot and bid number here. For
those seeking a list of big winners by named item, TrekMovie.com has posted an abbreviated list.

Cingular Releases HTC Star Trek Phone As 3125
Cingular is releasing the HTC Star Trek phone in the United
States as the Cingular 3125, keeping features such as the ability to
sync data with Outlook and EDGE browsing on Cingular's network.
Gizmodo lamented the name change but reiterated its positive
review of the phone design. The Cingular 3125 is available now for
business customers for $149 with a two-year service agreement.
The phone, which has a clamshell shape, comes with a 1.3
megapixel camera and runs Windows Mobile. Engadget listed other
features such as Bluetooth, Direct Push mail, quad-band GSM with
GPRS/EDGE, 128MB ROM/64MB RAM and a 2.2-inch display.
the unwired added that another version of the phone, the Cingu-
'Of Gods and Men' Wraps Production
Star Trek: Of Gods and Men, the web miniseries starring numerous Star Trek alumni and directed by Tim
Russ, has completed production in Los Angeles.
eMediaWire has posted the press release from the
production, which states that filming has wrapped as of
October 1st in anticipation of a Christmas release. The
installments, each 30 minutes long, will be available as
internet downloads.
Of Gods and Men stars original series actors Walter
Koenig (Chekov), Nichelle Nichols (Uhura) and Grace Lee
Whitney (Rand), with appearances by Voyager's Garrett
Wang (Kim) and Ethan Phillips (Neelix), Deep Space
Nine's Cirroc Lofton (Jake), Chase Masterson (Leeta) and
J.G. Hertzler (Martok) and Enterprise's Gary Graham
(Soval) and Crystal Allen (D'Nesh) among others. Many
members of the production team also worked on Roddenberry on Patrol.
"What we have achieved thus far has gone way beyond my expectations," Russ said. "The majority of the
film was shot without key personnel and critical materials
in a number of production areas...the cast and crew have
been tremendous, working extremely hard to achieve our
goals." He predicted that fans would be "absolutely
amazed" by the finished result.
Onetime Deep Space Nine writers Jack Trevino and
Ethan H. Calk wrote the teleplay with producer Sky Douglas Conway. The miniseries was filmed in part on the Star
Trek: New Voyages set.
The first trailer can be viewed on the official website,
lar 3120, will be available without the camera. The phone is expected
to be in general release very soon. "The HTC Star Trek is the first
Windows Mobile Smartphone Edition device to sport a 'slim' flip
phone design a la the Motorola Razr," noted Alfredo Padilla, who
added that, like the Razr, the Star Trek phone has keys for controlling
music playback on the outside when the clamshell is closed.
There is a more complete review of the phone at Laptop Magazine, which called it "Best for casual e-mail users, the 3125 is a sleek
phone for work or play that’s just smart enough" and suggested it for
"Razr lovers looking for a little more intelligence - without sacrificing
fun."

Spike TV confirmed to SCI FI Wire reports that its original
series Blade has been canceled. "Yes, that's true," a Spike
representative said in an interview on Sept. 29. "It won't be
renewed for a second season. I can tell you that Spike TV
was very happy with the creative part of Blade. The cast, the
actual production. We absolutely enjoyed working with New
Line and [executive producer] David Goyer, [writer] Geoff
Johns. But honestly, the network was disappointed with the
audience turnout and the ratings. But I can tell you that New

Line is going to be issuing a DVD of the entire season." No date was announced for the DVD.
Robert Downey Jr. has been cast as Tony Stark in Jon
Favreau's Iron Man movie for Marvel Studios, Variety
reported. The movie, based on the classic Marvel
Comics character, is set for release by Paramount in
May 2008. It will be the first to be self-financed by
Marvel. Downey will play Stark, a wealthy industrialist
who invents a high-tech suit of body armor that gives
him super powers when he is kidnapped. In the comics, Stark was an alcoholic, a trait that will undoubtedly
draw public comparisons with Downey's own struggles
with substance abuse, the trade paper reported. But
Marvel production president Kevin Feige told the trade
paper that the first Iron Man movie won't deal with
Stark's alcohol problems, though it would likely come
up in potential sequels. The first film will deal with
Stark's invention of the Iron Man suit and his conflicted
past as a weapons inventor. Principal photography on
"Iron Man" is set to begin in February.
Jonathan Mostow (Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines)
has signed on to rewrite and direct the proposed film
version of Marvel Comics' Sub-Mariner for Universal
Pictures, Variety reported. Mostow has cleared his
schedule to make Sub-Mariner his next movie. The
property, created by cartoonist Bill Everett in April
1939, centers on a young man who discovers he's
actually a descendant from the long-lost kingdom of
Atlantis. He turns out to be the key man in a brewing
war between the underwater world and our own.
Kevin Misher is producing through his Misher Films,
along with Marvel Studios. David Self wrote an earlier
draft of the screenplay. Sub-Mariner previously looked
like it would go with Chris Columbus at the helm. His
involvement was announced in late 2004, but that
package fell apart.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest has become the third film to pass $1 billion at the worldwide
box office, becoming the third-highest-grossing film of
all time, the Reuters news service reported. The
Johnny Depp sequel had sold $1.003 billion worth of
tickets as of Sept. 8, the Walt Disney Co. said in a
statement. But it was unlikely to climb any higher up
the rankings. Titanic, released in 1997, holds the record, with $1.8 billion, followed by 2003's Lord of the
Rings: The Return of the King, with $1.1 billion. Dead
Man's Chest's predecessor, Pirates of the Caribbean:
The Curse of the Black Pearl, earned $656 million
worldwide. A third film, Pirates of the Caribbean: At
World's End, is shooting in Los Angeles, with plans for
release next May.
According to Bob Hoskins (via IESB.NET), he has not
been approached about the role of The Penguin, but
he’s certainly like to do it. And the big news: Heath
Ledger has finally spoken about playing The Joker.
Here's what he had to say (via THE TORONTO
STAR): "It's definitely going to stump people. I think it'll
be more along the lines of how the Joker was meant to
be in the comics, darker and more sinister. I wouldn't
have thought of me, either. But it's obviously not going
to be what Jack Nicholson did. It's going to be more
nuanced and dark and more along the lines of A
Clockwork Orange kind of feel. Which is, I think, what
the comic book was after: less about his laugh and
≤

more about his eyes.”
Tim Story, who returns to the directing chair for the
superhero sequel Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver
Surfer, announced on his personal blog that production
has just begun on the film. Story wrote: "So it has
begun! The Fantastic Four have been photographed
for Rise of The Silver Surfer. Felt like old times. Everyone's back in the mix, and really picking their characters up where we last left off." Story also said that he
has filmed the first scene with Andre Braugher, who
plays General Hager, "an old acquaintance of Reed
Richards and one of the major additions to the movie."
Fantastic Four: Rise of The Silver Surfer is scheduled
to open June 15, 2007.

Attention Members
Are you new to STARFLEET and still have not yet
decided on a chapter to join? Are you a returning
member looking for a change of pace or something
different? Then the USS PeaceKeeper may just be
the home for you.
We are a Correspondence Chapter in the Region 4
area and are seeking new members. There are no
chapter dues to be a member of the PeaceKeeper, all
we do ask is that you must be a member of STARFLEET and assign the PeaceKeeper as your Primary
Chapter.
As a Correspondence Chapter we stay in contact
with our members via a yahoo group list as well as
regular e-mails between our members. We have an
IRC chat room that we occasionally meet in to visit and
keep members updated on what’s going on with our
chapter. We have an electronic newsletter that comes
out quarterly that helps keep our members informed of
events going on in our chapter, the Region and STARFLEET along with other interesting articles.
If you would like to join our merry little group you or
have questions you can contact Capt. James Coulter
at
[email protected]
or
[email protected]. Please put “New Member
Info” in the subject line. For more information about
us you can go to our web site at
www.usspeacekeeper.org.

The International STAR TREK Fan Association, Inc.
Visit STARFLEET on the World Wide Web at: http://www.sfi.org/
STARFLEET is the fan organization with something for everyone. Members the world over are united in appreciation of the
human adventure of STAR TREK. Hundreds of chapters spread around the planet link members into local fandom and the central
organization.
Annual membership in STARFLEET begins with a package containing a membership card, membership certificate, handbook,
and a listing of chapters throughout the world, including the one nearest you! The membership handbook will introduce you to
STARFLEET’s unique infrastructure that offers two membership options. One allows you to be an Associate Member with no obligation
other than receiving membership materials and magazines. The other option provides a more futuristic atmosphere for those fans
intrigued by the fleet structure within the STAR TREK universe. After receiving the membership package, a new member will have the
opportunity to sign aboard the starship (chapter) of their choice, hold a fictional rank and position and take part in the chapter’s STAR
TREK related activities and community service projects.
Another element of your STARFLEET membership is your subscription to six issues of the Communiqué, our bi-monthly
magazine. The Communiqué contains current information on STARFLEET operations and chapter activities, list of upcoming
conventions, news and information on STAR TREK media and articles on the space program in related areas.
