Relationship Education: A Choice for Hope
Cherise, a 13-year-old, had been dating a
16-year-old boy for a few months, and she didn’t
see anything wrong with their relationship. Like
many young people, Cherise didn’t have a lot of
experience with dating relationships or what
makes a relationship healthy.
Participating in Between Friends’
Relationship Education: A Choice for Hope
(REACH) Program at her school was a wake-up
call. Between Friends’ staff led an activity called
“Stay or Go” where students listen to real life situations in a dating relationship and decide if they
will stay in the relationship or leave. Throughout
the course of this activity, the topic of unwanted
sex came up. Cherise stayed after class to talk
with our Prevention and Education Specialist. She
told us about the boy she was dating, and we
worked with her to explore the positive and negative aspects of their relationship. Our Prevention
and Education Specialist pointed out that since her
boyfriend was so much older than her, he may try
to pressure Cherise to have sex with him.
The following month, Cherise called our
Crisis Line. She shared that while her parents
were out of town her boyfriend had pressured her
to have sex. She told him no and had realized that
their relationship was not healthy. Soon after, they
broke up. Cherise thanked our staff for helping her
to see the warning signs of an abusive relationship
and preparing her to make healthy decisions for
herself.
Sadly, many teens are experiencing dilemmas similar to Cherise’s every day. According to
the U.S. Department of Justice, 20% of all high
school girls report having experienced physical or
sexual abuse from a dating partner, and one in
three high school students have been or will be
involved in an abusive relationship.
The problem of not recognizing the warning
signs of abuse is often compounded by the tendency of teens to confide in friends instead of
parents or other authority figures. Also, parents
are often unaware of the extent of the problem
themselves. A poll conducted by the National Teen
Dating Violence Prevention Initiative reflects this
problem, showing that 81% of parents either
believe teen dating violence is not an issue or are
unsure if it is an issue. This indicates that dating
violence is not being adequately discussed and
addressed.
The REACH Program works with Chicago
area middle and high schools to help educate
them about healthy relationships and how to
get out of and avoid abusive ones. As one of the
largest healthy relationship education programs in
Illinois, this year we will serve over 4,500 students
and 100 adults by providing 5 to 9-week long
classroom-based programs. (continued on page 2)
Students at Chicago Math and Science Academy learn
about healthy dating relationships and how to break up
with a dating partner from Karen Seck, one of Between
Friends’ Prevention and Education Specialists.
Between Friends’ Clinical Supervisor, Sonya CrabtreeNelson, and Counselor, Ann Friesema, shared their
expertise at the Illinois Coalition Against Domestic
Violence conference titled, “Advocacy, Empowerment
and Leadership” on April 8th. In their session, Ann and
Sonya outlined best practices for client intake and
assessment to help minimize the trauma experienced
by the domestic violence survivor and the counselor in
the process.
The Executive Director’s Corner
Dear Friends,
Recent domestic violence incidents between
Chris and Rihanna and the many deaths in the
Chicagoland area like Angela McClinton and her
young daughter have kept dating and domestic
violence in the spotlight! Between Friends has
been called upon recently to share our expertise
with the Chicago Tribune, FOX News Chicago,
and on the radio –with Ty Bentli at 103.5 FM.
With the largest teen dating violence prevention program in the state, Relationship
Education: A Choice for Hope (REACH), we
worked with 5,600 youth last year. It is in this
program where we work diligently every day to
combat the belief among teens that Rihanna did
something to deserve the abuse.
Unfortunately this abuse is all too common
with 1 in 3 youth experiencing dating violence.
What I can tell you from our outcomes is that
most teens, both girls and boys, walk into our
program saying it is ok to hit each other. Nine
weeks later, when our Prevention and Education
Specialists leave, they are saying that it is
never ok!
Your support is crucial for all the families we
serve. It is especially important now with this
tough economy where we are hearing stories
from individuals – primarily women on our Crisis
Line and in our offices who are experiencing
abuse of a greater magnitude and have less
services and options available to help them leave
their abusive situation. Your support is even more
critical now that the state has slashed services to
victims of domestic violence. Please read more
about this on page 3.
Kathleen A. Doherty, Executive Director
On April 6th, Between Friends honored Lillian Miller, a
retired social worker and teacher, who had volunteered
with our agency for 23 years. Lillian was instrumental in
our beginning when she, along with our other founding
mothers, decided to start a counseling center on
Howard Street for survivors of domestic violence.
Lillian’s dedication did not wane with the passing of
time; she continued to answer our Crisis Line every
Thursday. Thank you, Lillian, for supporting Between
Friends through all of these years! You will be missed.
REACH (continued)
Like Cherise, many young people have been
impacted by the REACH Program. In fact, an
analysis of our outcome measures shows that
after participating in the REACH Program last
year:
• 95% of students could identify three warning
signs that their partner might become abusive
on their post-test, while only 39% could do so
on their pre-test;
• 78% of students who indicated on their pre-test
that they would be violent towards their dating
partner if he/she refused to have sex had a
reverse attitude on their post-test; and
• 83% of students indicated a reverse in their
belief that abuse is a victim’s fault.
Youth leave our REACH Program with a better
understanding of healthy relationships and are
less likely to become violent towards their dating
partner.
Last spring, Between Friends conducted
focus groups with 233 students at five different
schools to get youth input into our program.
During these focus groups, many of the youth we
worked with suggested that we include more
information in our program on having healthy
relationships, such as: how to choose a dating
partner, characteristics of a healthy relationship,
conflict resolution, and how to break up. As a
result, this fall we expanded our Discussing
Relationships in Early Adolescence Makes
Sense (DREAMS) Program for 7th and 8th
graders from 6 to 9 sessions.
With an expanded focus on healthy relationships, more young people like Cherise will learn
more about how to make healthy decisions for
themselves in their dating relationships.
Yesenia Romo, Director of Programs, practiced her
moves at free self-defense classes sponsored by Kiss
103.5 and a local gym called Flirty Girl Fitness. Between
Friends staff was invited by D.J. Ty Bentli to answer
questions about domestic violence and talk about our
services.
Between Friends is a nonprofit agency dedicated to breaking the cycle of domestic violence and abuse by providing education, support, counseling, and advocacy services.
Between Friends works with individuals, families, and communities to create awareness about domestic violence and abuse and to reduce its prevalence and impact.

2009 Bubble Ball Raises Over $97,000 for Ending Violence
Between Friends and over 230 supporters
celebrated 23 years of service at the 2009 Bubble
Ball, held March 21st at Architectural Artifacts
on Chicago’s north side. We were extremely
excited to be joined by Marion Brooks from NBC
5 who emceed the event.
Guests enjoyed dinner, drinks, and hors
d’oeuvres from J&L Catering, and live music
courtesy of Rhythm City Band while exploring
Architectural Artifact’s 80,000 square foot collection of unusual treasures from around the world.
This year’s silent auction was really the belle of the
ball. Guests bid on over 170 items including
unique experiences such as a chance to fly a
World War II aircraft, be the guest bartender on
Channel 11’s Check, Please!, and take a tour at
NBC 5 Studios.
This year’s Bubble Ball successfully raised
over $97,000 for Between Friends. These funds
will allow us to continue serving women and
children affected by domestic violence as well as
expand our community education and teen healthy
St. Francis Hospital was chosen as a Friend of the Year
for their six year partnership with us in responding to
the needs of domestic violence survivors in the health
care system. Anne Gallagher, Advanced Practice Nurse/
Clinical Educator, (in the middle of the second row)
accepted the award.
A big thank you goes out to the Bubble Ball 2009 Event Committee: (pictured from left to right) Jennifer Buss,

relationship programs to some of Chicago’s most
vulnerable populations.
Between Friends is grateful to our 2009 Event
Committee for their help in making this year’s
Bubble Ball a great event, including: Chair, Christy
Roberts; and Committee Members, Jennifer
Buss, Alison Ferrari, Karen Hennelly, Amy
MacLaren, Kevin Shanklin, Alison Clarke, Bob
Ernst, Katherine Laggos, Kristine Michel,
Caroline Moellering, and Leila Shin. We would
also like to thank our sponsors: Allstate, St.
Francis Hospital, Ariel Investments, Bank
Financial, Harley Davidson Financial Services,
Harrison Wallace Financial Services, Capstone
Property Management, Grosvenor Capital
Management, The Joseph Kellman Family
Foundation, and Saunders & Doyle. Finally, we
would like to thank our Young Professionals’
Group for holding a Bubble Ball Kick-Off event at
Martini Park which also helped to raise funds.
STATE BUDGET CRISIS
Troy Ratliff, Executive Vice President of the Joseph
Kellman Family Foundation, also accepted a Friend of the
Year award on behalf of Lou Anne Kellman. Lou Anne,
a long time Advisory Council member, has generously
shared her resources and passion for helping women
and children impacted by domestic violence.
Thank you
So far Between Friends has lost 60% of its state funding leaving a $138,500 hole
in our previously balanced 2010 budget. We are not alone - most domestic violence
agencies received similar cuts. This means that over 17,000 fewer victims in Cook
County will be served and with two shelters closing it leaves less than 150 beds
for victims fleeing a life of violence. 3,000 women and children at Between Friends
will be turned away. Cutting services cost lives. Please contact the leadership
of the House and Senate as well as your state legislators. Tell them to
pass a budget that preserves these services and saves lives.
In May, the Kiwanis Club of
Rogers Park held a food drive
for Between Friends to help our
families affected by domestic
violence get back on their feet.
