Sock Drive!
Subscribe Now to LCC’s Private Security Patrol
LCC trustees Linda Luiten, Elizabeth Graham, Kay Kelly, and
Maggie Weissman invite Laurelhurst neighbors to donate to the
North Seattle Police Precinct Sock
Drive. Every year,
neighborhoods in
the North Precinct
collect new socks,
hats, and gloves
for men, women,
and children (all
ages) to distribute
to family shelters
and the homeless.
Last year, Laurelhurst neighbors
generously donated 500 of the
5,000 socks, hats, and gloves
distributed by the North Precinct.
Some of the donations had been
lovingly hand knitted. This year we
hope to exceed our numbers from
last year.

Recently, neighbors received in the mail an invitation to subscribe to the
patrol. Over the past three years, LCC has had very positive response to
this program. LCC continues to do everything it can to deter burglaries,
car prowls, auto thefts, and vandalism in Laurelhurst — and that is why
we are asking you to subscribe now for 2012. The success of the patrol
depends on neighbor participation — the more families that subscribe,
the more coverage the patrol can offer.
LCC’s private security project is particularly important now, because the
City’s budget shortfall means that the 26 vacant positions in the Seattle
Police Department will not be filled.
The patrol boundaries cover the entire neighborhood area south of Sand
Point Way from Mary Gates Way to NE 55th Street. As before, coverage
is planned for six nights a week, but nights and hours will vary depending
on funding contributed.
The annual cost per family is $200 for the period ending December 31,
2012. Neighbors can join at any time during the year and neighborhood
institutions such as schools, churches, etc. are encouraged to participate,
too, but need to contact LCC for details. Signing up now ensures
coverage during the upcoming holiday season.

Sorcher Appointed to SR 520 Committee
LCC is proud to announce that Stan Sorscher has been selected as
Laurelhurst’s representative on the Community Design Process
Committee for the rebuild of SR 520. While the overall design already has
been approved, Stan will be a real asset to the committee as WSDOT,
DPD, and stakeholders address design issues and their enduring impacts.
Stan currently serves as secretary of LCC’s Board of Trustees. He recently
helped negotiate the land-use agreement between Seattle Children’s and
LCC and continues to work as one of four team members on such issues
such as transportation and construction management plans as the Seattle
Children’s campus expansion progresses. He also has extensive familiarity
with the expansion plans for the University Village and the University of
Washington and understands the need for planning for the future growth
of the region, and especially in northeast Seattle. n
State Senator Scott White, Respected Leader
The 46th District, which includes Laurelhurst, suffered a sad loss with
the sudden death of State Senator Scott White October 21. Recently
elected to the Senate, this young leader previously served as Chief of
Staff, Metropolitan County Council, and as our State Representative,
focusing his legislative efforts in education and transportation issues.
The King County Chair has called a Special Caucus within the 46th
District to select three names that will be ratified by the King County
Democratic Central Committee and passed on to the King County
Council. An interim State Senator from the 46th District will be appointed
to serve until the November 2012 election.
LCC extends its sympathy to his wife Alison and their two young children,
residents of the Wedgwood neighborhood. n

Traffic-Calming Speed Cushions Installed
For several years, neighbors have raised concerns about speeding cars
along NE Surber Dr. between NE 41st St. and 41st Ave NE. This corridor
has been on SDOT’s priority funding list. Recently, three-inch high asphalt speed cushions were installed to calm traffic on this long stretch.
Street parking is not affected by the speed cushions.
Installing the speed cushions involved submitting a signed petition to
SDOT from 60 percent of neighbors affected by the project. Neighbor
approval is common for these types of traffic-calming projects, and LCC
has been through this process many times with installation of traffic
circles, curb bulbs, the pedestrian refuge island at the end of Surber, and
even the planted medians on Mary Gates/NE 41st.
Surber Dr. is heavily used by pedestrians — dog walkers, neighbors
walking to Husky games or over to a grocery store, Yesler Swamp, or the
Talaris site. Slowing traffic for the safety of pedestrians and bicyclists is a
LCC priority, and the Surber Dr. project is a welcome move. n

n Uniformed, off-duty Seattle Police officers patrol the neighborhood
approximately six nights/days a week for five hours each shift. Officers
are in uniform, carry police radios and their police firearms, and drive
unmarked personal vehicles. They monitor incoming 911 calls and will
respond to any Laurelhurst calls if on patrol and work with the official
response from the on-duty police officers. In 2011, our patrol responded
to several incidents and was first on scene before on-duty Seattle Police
arrived. In addition, they have helped reduced parties in the park that we
believe sometimes lead to vandalism in the neighborhood, stopped
suspicious persons, and have provided tips at Block Watch meetings on
how to better secure your home.
n Vacation check. You can notify [email protected] of
your vacation plans and officers will do a walk around of your premises
during each shift and secure any open doors, exposed packages, or
remove door tags. They call your emergency contact number with any
concerns or leave an incident card for minor issues (for example, if they
shut your garage door). Traditionally, the holidays are a period of high
crime. If you subscribe now, you will be covered from November and
December 2011 through December 2012.

vacation checks or to report any criminal activity (after you have called
911), neighborhood concerns, etc.
n Special email alerts and reminders. LCC emails information on criminal
activity and trends.

Generosity Appreciated
at Women’s Shelter
Once Laurelhurst neighbor Huda
Giddens discovered the Elizabeth
Gregory Home, established in 2001
by the University Lutheran Church,
she became a strong advocate for
this transitional housing program
for homeless women. Our
neighborhood’s generosity to those
less fortunate makes a difference.
After an article published in the
May issue of this newsletter,
neighbors filled Huda’s donation
box with much needed and
appreciated donations. The editor
recently received a note thanking
the Laurelhurst neighborhood for
its support. The writer stated, “as
of Sept. 30, we have been able to
provide services to more than 300
women at the Day Center in 2011.”
Giddens makes a regular
delivery of neighborhood
donations to the Gregory House
on the last day of each month.

travel products such as soaps,
shampoos, toothbrushes, etc., as
well as garbage bags, sanitary
pads, new socks, hats, gloves,
