kindness: kindness in your face, kindness in your eyes, kindness in your smile.

WHEW! Our highlight of the year (and it was indeed!) OUR COLORFUL CONVENTION, is over and what a wonderful team effort, and I don’t just mean the convention team (even though I am very proud of every one of them) I mean the whole 407 who registered (although not all turned up) You all made it the success I believe it was. I sometimes wonder if we are looking at conventions too inwardly with past comments being “too long”. I could have had an extra day with some excellent guest speakers and entertainment. Seriously, our main keynote speaker Wally Lewis –the KING should have been granted an extra hour. He was so entertaining...well for us Queenslanders anyway (however, just remember he was a Kangaroo captain as well!) Thank you to all those who acknowledged the conventions success however, some matters were beyond our control. Sorry to those who may have been dissatisfied by the catering but we did have sufficient food. Unfortunately a number of Lions hadn’t paid which left us short. An indication of the worth of our entertainment was when a member said “How did we manage to engage and afford Dame Edna” Her/his stint on both nights could have been longer if we had the time. Similarly, the ‘Sugar Shakers’ band to provide more dancing. I think the THIS IS YOUR PAST segment was well received and hopefully continued along similar lines. We need to place our senior Lions on a pedestal. Also my thanks to those who appreciated the remembrance ceremony? My apology for the slight computer (mouse) glitch. I was not supposed to run the presentation but it was relegated to me through lack of tech support. I sincerely thank all conventioneers for your response to the Kyogle departed. Your mark of respect to those that served us for a combined 233 years was wonderful. We apologize for not handing over the travelling Lion trophy during our presentation ceremony but the numbers were mislaid so we will do this at my next club visit (perhaps with a photo)The winning club was Apple Mac users of Q’ld with almost a full attendance – a superb effort. Enough of the convention! I just hope that you all enjoyed it, and will return next year in the same numbers. Thank you all for getting dressed up. I believe DGE Ross is endeavouring to make his convention FUN as well. Now that the convention is behind us the serious part of my objectives will kick in. Keep those members rolling in. We had a good number inducted on the weekend by our International Director Sheryl Jensen and I just need clubs to bring along more prospects to keep the numbers in the plus. This is the reason why we need new clubs – to stay ahead of the drop outs. I hope all clubs seriously consider the Club Excellence processes so we can determine why retention is a problem. My objective still remains at 20 clubs... The sooner that you undertake the program, the sooner we find out how to retain our members. As always, I have one of my favourite sayings to share: A BUS STATION IS WHERE A BUS STOPS, A TRAIN
STATION WHERE A TRAIN STOPS, THEN HOW COME
MY WORK STATION NEVER SEEMS TO STOP

BETTY’S BIT
Hi from DG Merv’s wife Lion Betty! I have been asked to make a small contribution to the District newsletter. Just a note to say how wonderful our visits to the 41 clubs have been, and a big thank you to those club members. It has been a great journey up to the convention which, I have to say, was a little stressful at times, but Merv. and I have experienced a lot of that in Merv’s banking days. However we were able to get through it and look forward to the next 8 months The 60th anniversaries we have attended have been great. So much work has gone into them and those members should be so proud of their efforts to celebrate this wonderful milestone The convention was very enjoyable and I hope everyone had a great time. The guest speakers that Merv. selected were inspirational and humorous especially Wally Lewis. I could have listened to him for a lot longer but understand time is limited. Our comedians added a bit of hilarity to the convention. I would like to thank everyone for being so kind to Merv. and I in our many endeavours. I look forward to visiting the remaining clubs and saying hello to all our wonderful Lions, Lionesses and Leos. BETTY

.
At the time of writing this report I am in recovery mode after a very long weekend at what I believe was a great Convention. Congratulations to everyone who contributed to the success of the weekend and also a huge thank you to all the District Officers and Members who organised such a wonderful array of speakers and spoke at the Convention. I hope everyone was inspired and enthused. It is very disheartening that month after month I make a comment on clubs not completing their WMMR’s, at the end of September I was required to complete DISTRICT 201 Q1 Newsletter – November 2012

YOUTH EXCHANGE WANTED: HOST FAMILIES FOR YOUTH FROM NEW ZEALAND AND MALAYSIA
Can you help? We are seeking host families for five youth exchangees expected into Australia in December. The first girl to arrive, Manisha from New Zealand, flies in on 2 December. I received this first list just after the District Convention and doesn’t leave much time to organise a host family or two. There are also four Malaysian youth who have not booked their international flights yet as they are waiting for early news about where their host families are situated so direct international flights can be made to the nearest Australian airport/s. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ AUSTRALIAN LIONS CHILDREN’S MOBILITY
FOUNDATION
I hope everyone enjoyed the District Convention presentation of children in their various walkers, I know that the Families were pleased to be there to thank Lions for their support in obtaining the walkers for their children. On the other hand there are still a number of children requiring sponsorship so that they may obtain their walkers. If any Club can help with a donation to any of them it would be much appreciated. I have a child from Eight Mile Plains needing a Kidwalk for a once only cost of $5596, so far I have received $1050 a shortage of $4546, a child from Miami needing a Bronco Walker at a once only cost of $4308, a child from Eden’s Landing needing a Mulholland Walkabout at a once only cost of $5780, so far I have received $1750 a shortage of $4030, a child from Logan Village needing a Crocodile Walker for a once only cost of $2343, so far I have received $500 a shortage of $1843. Two new applications have been received recently and Clubs in the areas have been approached but if anyone else can help it would also be appreciated. They are a child from Upper Mount Gravatt needing a Meywalk Mk2 at a once only cost of $2880, and a child from Manly West needing a Flux Posterior Walker at a once only cost of $2580. Thank you to the Clubs who responded to my last call for help and I am pleased to say the child from Tarragindi has been fitted with his Rifton Pacer Gait Trainer and the child from Tingalpa should be fitted early next month. Below is a photo of the children from the District Convention with their walkers. They are Jessie Lee Russell in her Hart Walker, Curtis Sullivan in his Kaye Walker, Isabella Derriman in her Rifton Pacer Gait Trainer, Millie Johnson in her Mustang walker, and Hannah Johnson in her Kidwalk. Thank you to everyone for their support of the Mobility Foundation and please continue to collect your used stamps and send them to Australian Lions Stamp Club. I am available as a Guest Speaker for your Zone or Club meeting please contact me. Lion Christine Forrest District Chairman ALCMF ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
CHILDREN OF COURAGE
I would like to start by saying thank you to all Lions Delegates and Conventioneers for voting to make the Children of Courage a District Project from now on and hope that Clubs will respond to this by holding a Children of Courage awards presentation themselves. I hope everyone enjoyed the presentation held on Sunday 21st October at the District Convention, I know the Families were thrilled to be there and could not have been happier to have their children nominated for the award. I must thank Lion Vida McLachlan from Redlands because without her help before and on the day it would have so much harder for me when I live in the other direction. She visited schools and other organisations to get the applicants. DISTRICT 201 Q1 Newsletter – November 2012

It is a very worthwhile project and doesn’t cost a lot to hold for further information please contact me and I will help or better still be a Guest Speaker to inform you. There are a couple of presentations during November; Robina Lions club is holding theirs on the 24th November and Gold Coast Broadbeach Mermaid Lions are holding theirs on the 18th November. The recipients of the Children of Courage at Convention were Sebastian and Tullulah Angus for a Special needs award, Mikaela Brodie for a Sibling award, Brooke Holman for a special needs award, Kaitlin Randall for a Sibling award, Caitlin McCormack for a special needs award, Kirralee Smith for a Special Needs award. I’m sure you all agree they were very special children and thoroughly deserved their awards. (Photo below). DG Merv and Sebastian & Tullulah Angus Lion Christine Forrest

“A well earned award” Lion Geoff Budden , a member of the Lions Club of Murwillumbah for past 30 years suffered a stroke early this year which has left him in a wheelchair and now almost unable to continue as an active Lion. Before this Geoff had been the Treasurer of the Lions Northern NSW Community Trust for 12 years, a job that was intensive and time consuming but performed with skill and attention to detail over these many years. In appreciation of these years of service to the Trust the Trust members voted to award Geoff for his dedication. At the 64th Charter Meeting of the Murwillumbah Club PDG Tony Cornell, the Trust Secretary presented Geoff with an “Ian.M.Stockdale Humanitarian Award” Picture shows the presentation, in order PDG Tony Cornell, Lion Geoff Budden & Murwillumbah President Lion Margaret Organ. FROM THE EDITOR
Aside from my blunder of changing and rechanging the format and content sequence of the October issue and forgetting to change the Cover Page Title to “October” I think the last issue was a considerable improvement in many ways. But of course I await your feedback which will be presented to me via the Cabinet Members and Zone Chairs attending the next Cabinet Meeting in Ballina on 24th & 25th November. On the subject of including events in the District Newsletter – too many are sending me full page spreads asking me to include them, if possible – please note, full page and ¾ page spreads will not be included. If you would like to have your Lions event included in the newsletter then start with a ¼ or ½ page spread. Finally, it seems I missed out on another great Q1 Convention, but thank you to all those who sent me condolence messages. John Andrews

CHRISTMAS CAKES & PUDDINGS
HAVE YOU PLACED YOUR ORDERS YET? Christmas is just around the corner. May I remind all not to leave it too late to have your corporate orders in place. You are coming up to the last opportunity to achieve the final discount ‘payment with order’ being in by 31st October. Please remember to have your final ‘guaranteed delivery for Christmas’ in by 7th December. Do not leave it all up to your Club Chairman to sell your Cakes/puddings. We all are in this project – one that we, as Lions, are proud of! Suggestion – buy a ‘Home Brand’ cake and place it beside one of ours in your sales counter – the general public can see the value in our product. Let me know if you need assistance.
