THE CLASS OF
’88 CELEBRATES
TWENTY YEARS
It has been 20 years since the Herzlia matric class of 1988 sat on
the steps of the quad for our group photo. One of the biggest
groups in history, there were some 200 students who matriculated
that year. Twenty years on and the class got together to celebrate
this anniversary, to catch up with old classmates and to give back
to the school that holds so many precious memories - through
the Renew-A-Classroom campaign. This exciting event was
held on 15 December 2008 at the Albow Centre in Hatfield
Street, Cape Town.
Special thanks go to all the organisers who put so much effort
into this special occasion. To view the photos download the link:

UHS NEWS
THE ELIOT AND MYRA OSRIN
VOCATIONAL UNIT
INAUGURATED AT HERZLIA HIGH
SCHOOL
Over the past decade, United Herzlia Schools has made significant
progress with regard to the inclusive practices at the different school
campuses, from pre-primary to high. As changes have taken place
in the educational arena as a whole, it has been necessary to change
and adapt these inclusive practices and policies.
Because Herzlia is a community school, Herzlia strives to reflect all
the members of our community. And so we work constantly to
broaden our horizons and push boundaries to make this possible.
Herzlia recently held a presentation on inclusive education to honour
the inauguration of the Eliot and Myra Osrin Vocational Unit.
Brian Goldberg, Chairman of the United Herzlia Schools, introduced
the proceedings by thanking Eliot and Myra Osrin for their ongoing
support of the school, and for Eliot’s continued valuable guidance
in the governance of the institution in his capacity as Chairman of
the Board of Trustees of the United Herzlia Schools.
Presenters included Amanda Israel (class of 1995), Head of the
Developmental Education Unit (DEU) and Workskills Training
Programme, Lara Marks (class of 1989), Head of Educational Support,
Geoff Cohen (class of 1976), Director Education and principal of
Middle School.
They highlighted the concept of the DEU and explained the working
of the unit. Learners with developmental delays are able to be
enrolled at Herzlia and receive developmentally appropriate tuition
and skill development in their specific areas of need. This unit aims
to reduce the effect of the child’s barriers to learning and prepares
the children in the unit to be functional, independent and productive
members of our community.
STAFF NEWS
LEONIE ORAM recently retired after teaching
Jewish History at Herzlia for many years.
RON JONES retired from teaching and plans to
pursue other interests. He taught Science at Herzlia
for 15 years.
The Workskills Training Programme was introduced as an alternative
stream to Matric. It was designed for learners who prefer to choose
a more practical, career oriented academic programme. This Workskills
Training Programme forms part of the Vocational Unit.
In the past, learners on the Workskills Training Programme would
have been placed on an Individualised Education Plan (IEP) and been
fully integrated with mainstream learners. However, although this
system achieved the goals of inclusion, it did not necessarily provide
the learner with any recognised certification. The Workskills Training
Programme aims to attain nationally recognized certification in the
areas of literacy and numeracy, as well as providing learners with
career-oriented certification in the area chosen by each learner.
Throughout his or her course duration, each learner will attend
mainstream classes which correlate with their chosen course as well
as having to complete various work-shadow placements, which
enable the learner to establish a network of contacts and gain
working experience in his or her chosen field.
In addition to academics, both the DEU and the Workskills Training
Programme incorporate subjects such as Lifeskills, Social Skills and
Computer Literacy. These programmes have grown from strength
to strength over the years and many of our previous pupils are
currently furthering their studies and/or are gainfully employed.
CHRIS ERASMUS has moved to Port Elizabeth
to take up the post of principal at St Georges
School.
BEN ANDERSON shows that he still has what it
takes after all these years. Ben is the Sports Master
at Herzlia Weizmann and he is seen here (right)
at the opening of their new Swimming Pool and
Astroturf complex.

ALUMNI REUNIONS
1959 CLASS REUNION
BY ISAAC LIPSHITZ
I am from the 1959 Matric Class and this year is indeed the 50th
year since we left school! We already have a reunion planned for
November - this will take place in Israel. There were 18 in our class
but sadly three of our classmates have died – Justin Passwell, Alex
Wolf and Sammy Marcus.
On 26 December last year we held a reunion in Israel for those
pupils who matriculated during the 1950s. The event was held at
the home of Shalom Brenner who lives in Moshav Te’esur in the
Negev – a few kilometres east of Gaza. The war with Gaza started
on 27 December, so had the get together been planned for one
day later I am sure that it would not have taken place.
Pictured above right are
the pupils from the class
of 1959.

attended the reunion

1950s, held in Israel.
CLASS OF 1967 ISRAEL REUNIONS
Two mini reunions were held in Israel during January 2009. Some
of the friends had not seen each other for more than 34 years!

VISITORS
During the past few months we welcomed a number of alumni
and guests who came to visit their alma mater and reconnect
with their past.
Selwyn Passwell (1962) from Ramat Gan visited Herzlia for the
first time in more than 30 years. He came together with his sister,
Sharon Goldberg (1966) of Ra’anana. Unfortunately their brother
Justin, passed away recently.
Several members of the class of ’76 descended in full force on
their old school in November 2008. Our visitors gave very
generously to the Renew-A-Classroom campaign:
Ivor Baum (1978) visited from Los Angeles.
Albert Mendelsohn (1978) visited with his family. Albert lives
in the United States.
Avraham Nissenbaum together with his wife, Yehudit, visited
from Kfar Saba, Israel. Avraham taught High School Hebrew
from 1971 to 1974. His late wife Aviva taught Hebrew at the
Primary school. Avraham maintains that his years spent at
Herzlia were memorable ones.

“Our mother, Ros Feitelson, was everything daughters could want.
We were lucky enough to witness her kindness, caring and
generosity of spirit that formed the essence of her personality.
She was known to all for her energetic presence, sharp wit and
compassion for others, even in her darkest hours.”

EDUCATORS AND SOCIAL
WORKERS
MERVYN DANKER (1961)
Thanks for the invitation to submit information on my own journey
over the past 47 years since I matriculated from Herzlia. I was a
member of the class of 1961 who started at the school in Sub A
in Hope Street.
After graduating from the University of Cape Town with degrees in
history, English and education, I taught at Camps Bay High
School for 10 years before being appointed Vice Principal of my
alma mater. I was at Herzlia for barely a year when I started my
career in the principalship of Jewish Day Schools.
First was Theodor Herzl School in Port Elizabeth, followed by Carmel
School in West Australia and then for the next twenty years, at
schools in the U.S – the Solomon Schechter School of Greater
Hartford in Connecticut and for the balance of the time at the
Ronald C. Wornick Jewish Day School in Foster City, California.
After thirty years I retired from the world of education and was
appointed the Executive Director of the American Jewish Committee
in San Francisco. The organization is 102 years old and advocates
on behalf of Jewish communities worldwide and of course Israel. A
great deal of my work involves interaction with the diplomatic corps
based in the city. AJC has several offices in the United States and
overseas. It was the first U.S. Jewish organization to open an office
in Israel. That is my story and my journey and to all intents that of
my family, at least the part of living in different locales.
In her professional life Henna White works for the Brooklyn District
Attorney’s Office as District Attorney Charles J. Hynes community
liaison officer. Ms. White has also been at the forefront of issues of
dealing with domestic violence. She is a well-known speaker on the
topic of domestic violence and women’s issues and has organized
conferences, forums and educator's workshops. She created Brairot,
a batterer’s intervention and counselling group for Orthodox
Jewish males; as well as a Sex Offender's program designed to meet
the specific religious and cultural needs of sexual offenders.
Ms White has been the guiding force in helping communities break
through the denial and realize the tragic effect of domestic violence
on families.
Approximately seven years ago, in the aftermath of Yitzhak Rabin’s
assassination and in response to the rhetoric that divided the Jewish
people, Henna founded the Jewish Women’s Dialogue under the
auspices of the American Jewish Committee. The dialogue is a group
of approximately thirty women from all walks of life with differing
and opposing religious views who have learned to listen and talk to
each other. This dialogue has now been replicated throughout the
New York Jewish community as well as in Boston and Washington.
Henna serves as the Chairman of the Board of Kingsbrook Hospital.
She is the first woman to chair the Board of Directors and has
spearheaded many programs that educate women when it comes
to health related issues.
Ms. White is also the President of the Jewish Community Council
of Canarsie and serves on the board of trustees of the American
Jewish Committee among many other civic and philanthropic
endeavors. Henna has been honored by many organizations and
recently was cited by the Daily News as being “one of the 100
women who shape our City.”
Henna is a Chassidic Lubavitch woman and now resides in Canarsie,
Brooklyn with her husband Asher and their four children. They are
also the proud grandparents of a 1 year-old grandson, Levi Yitzchak.

IN THE NEWS
HOT OFF THE PRESS
DORON SWADE (1963) expressed ‘disbelief and delight’ at
being awarded an MBE – Member of the Order of the British
Empire – in the Queen’s New Year Honours list for services to
the history of computing. Doron has many achievements to his
name – one of which was the 17 year-long construction of the
first working Babbage calculating engine, built to the original 19th
century design.
SUZANNE ANNENBERG writes proudly of her brother,
ANTON FIG (1969). Anton is a famous drummer in New York,
appearing nightly as a member of the ‘CBS Orchestra’ on the
‘Late Show with David Letterman’ - a position he has held since
1986. During this period he has played with many great artists
including Miles Davis, James Brown, Bruce Springsteen, Stevie
Winwood, Bonnie Raitt, Tony Bennett and other famous names
too numerous to mention. For more info on this musical alumnus
visit www.antonfig.com
MITCH BESSER (1971) was recently awarded the Presidential
Citizen’s Medal – one of the highest honours the president can
confer upon a civilian. Mitch was given the award by former
President Bush in the Oval Office for his work with Aids in his
mothers2mothers project.
CINDY MORITZ (KESLER, 1988) recently accepted a position
with the online magazine www.all4women.co.za Cindy has a
wealth of experience writing for women’s magazines such as SA
Elle, Femina, Longevity and Child, among others, on topics as
diverse as fashion, health, fitness, parenting and even dating!
She reviews books on the side, and has a regular page in MTN's
Strictly Business magazine covering the pick of business reads.
DARRYN EDISON (1997) was recently awarded the Salient
Performance Award. Salient Strategic Advertising has successfully
run this award for two years running. The award aims to reward
staff who have exceeded expectations, by going beyond the call
of duty in the workplace. Darryn, account director, handles the
Shoprite SA and Africa account. Darryn’s growth within Salient
has been phenomenal. He joined the agency as a Junior Account
Executive when it opened its doors in March 2007.

AN EVENING OF INSPIRATIONAL
PARENTING
Herzlia parents had a treat when two renowned speakers, Colin
Hall and Maurice Ashley, recently addressed the Herzlia parent body
at an evening of inspirational parenting.
COLIN HALL from Learning to Lead (www.ltl.co.za) has served
on the boards of a number of South African companies. His passion
is people – as individuals, in teams and as part of society. Since 1992
Colin has conducted programs that are aimed at changing corporate
culture. His wisdom is drawn from 50 years of business and
professional experience and from a deep study of old cultures, nature
and new science.
GRANDMASTER MAURICE ASHLEY, the Tiger Woods of chess,
made history when he became the first African-American to attain
the coveted title of International Grandmaster of Chess. Maurice is
an ardent spokesman and advocate of the intellectual and character
building effects of chess in young people. For more information log
on to www.mauriceashley.com
Research has proven that chess makes kids smarter, enhances their
creativity, problem solving, memory, concentration, intellectual maturity
and self esteem. These more confident children then do better in
other school subjects.
