I
t was another example of God's providence. Our pilgrimage group
was scheduled to do a Mass at a simple side altar in the undercroft
of the Cathedral of Orvieto, Italy. When we arrived, however, we
were told that the famous chapel of the Eucharistic Miracle was
suddenly available for our use, if we wished the opportunity. We, of
course, quickly said, "yes!" It is the place that millions of pilgrims
come each year, just to get a glimpse of the holy corporal, a chalice
cloth, that is touched and marked by the Eucharistic Blood of Christ.
As the story goes, many years ago, an Italian priest was celebrating
Holy Mass. And as he began to break the Sacred Host, during the
singing of the Lamb of God, drops of blood emerged from the host
which stained the corporal in a way which left an imprint of a small
cross on the lower left-hand corner of the corporal itself. The
investigation by the local bishop's office confirmed the supernatural
nature of the event. The corporal was placed in a glass case, and
became an object of veneration, devotion, and adoration. Centuries
have now made the chapel of the Eucharistic miracle at the Cathedral
Basilica at Orvieto a place of international pilgrimage, attracting
millions of people each year. As our own group was celebrating Mass,
the specialness of this holy place was palpably felt. One of the only
photos that we have of our visit there is posted on our parish website
(www.cotlf.org). You can see, there, the miraculous corporal encased
above the tabernacle that is pictured behind me along the back wall.
A number of people in our group were in tears as we prayed there for
our family members, our personal intentions, and the people of Little
Flower parish.
As I think about the many language groups of pilgrims from
around the world that we saw there, (which we also saw at each stop
along the way of our journey, especially in Rome at the Patriarchal
Basilicas, and the Papal Mass), it helps me to again get a glimpse into
the significance of our Baptism in Jesus Christ.
On this, the Feast of the Baptism of The Lord, the Church
around the world pauses to reflect on the divinity and the humanity
of the Anointed One, who inaugurated his public ministry that day in
the River Jordan. It was then (and is still now) the capstone moment
in God's dream of a world redeemed, that through the person and
mission of Jesus Christ people would come to know the love of God,
and be drawn into a relationship with him. The Church, acting in His
name, does this for us each day that Sacraments are celebrated
around the world in the many languages of the human family.
Through this, the mission of Christ is extended to our contemporary
world. In the light of eternity, could there be anything more
important than being incorporated into the family of God's people, a
global family of believers that spans continents, languages, and
cultures, who through Baptism share in the love of God who is
Father, Son, and Spirit? Today's feast invites us to again appreciate
this identifying moment of Jesus' own Baptism, as a catalyst for the
grace which counts all of us, the Baptized, among God's beloved.
Can we again see in Jesus the love of God made manifest? Can
we again perceive the global and international dimension of his
mission to recreate the face of the earth, bringing it in line with his
holy plan for the redemption and salvation of all? Can we again
appreciate what our own Baptism has done for us, even to the point
of making us part of an international family of believers, rich and
poor, young and old, pilgrims which span the continents, en route to
a heavenly destiny with Christ? Everything we do, as Church, is
connected with this mystery of God's love, bringing healing, hope,
forgiveness, direction, light for living, and new life in Christ. Christ's
Baptism paved the way for the Holy Spirit to take possession of every
holy soul that desires new life in God.
It's a grace beyond measure, marking us eternally, and setting us
on a path to be with God. Oh, how we should wish to be counted
among that great multitude that walk in the light and love of the
Lord. Let us pray to appreciate the spiritual privileges that have been
given us in Christ, referencing our Baptism to the glory of God.

ue otro ejemplo de la providencia de Dios. Nuestro grupo de
peregrinos estaba programado para asistir a una misa en un
sencillo altar lateral en la cripta de la Catedral de Orvieto, Italia. Sin
embargo, cuando llegamos, se nos dijo que la famosa capilla del Milagro
Eucarístico estaba repentinamente disponible para nuestro uso, si nos
gustaba la oportunidad. Nosotros, por supuesto, nos apresuramos a
decir: "¡sí!" Es el lugar donde millones de peregrinos llegan cada año,
sólo para poder ver el corporal santo y un paño del cáliz, que fue tocado
y marcado por la Sangre Eucarística de Cristo. Según cuenta la historia,
hace muchos años, un sacerdote italiano estaba celebrando la Santa
Misa. Y cuando empezó a partir la Sagrada Hostia, durante el canto del
Cordero de Dios, gotas de sangre comenzaron a brotar de la hostia de
una manera que dejó la huella de una pequeña cruz en la esquina
inferior izquierda del propio corporal. La investigación realizada por la
oficina del obispo local confirmó el carácter sobrenatural del evento. El
corporal fue colocado en una caja de cristal, y se convirtió en un objeto
de veneración, devoción y adoración. Después de varios siglos han
hecho de la capilla del Milagro Eucarístico en la Basílica Catedral de
Orvieto un lugar de peregrinación internacional, atrayendo a millones
de personas cada año. Al propio grupo nuestro estar celebrando la misa,
lo especial de este lugar sagrado fue palpable. Una de las únicas fotos
que tenemos de nuestra visita allí está publicado en nuestra página web
de la parroquia (www.cotlf.org). Usted puede ver, ahí, el corporal
milagroso encerrado arriba del tabernáculo que se representa detrás de
mí a lo largo de la pared del fondo. Varias personas de nuestro grupo
tenían lágrimas mientras orábamos allí por miembros de nuestra
familia, nuestras intenciones personales, y los miembros de la parroquia
de Little Flower.
Cuando pienso en los muchos grupos lingüísticos de peregrinos de
todo el mundo que vimos allí, (que también hemos visto en cada parada
en el camino de nuestro viaje, especialmente en Roma, en las basílicas
patriarcales, y en la Misa Papal), me ayuda a obtener de nuevo otro

sueño de Dios de un mundo redimido, que a través de la persona y

se acercarían a tener una relación con él. La Iglesia, que actúa en su
nombre, lo hace por nosotros cada día que los sacramentos son
celebrados alrededor del mundo en las muchas lenguas de la familia
humana. A través de esto, la misión de Cristo se extiende a nuestro
mundo contemporáneo. A la luz de la eternidad, ¿podría haber algo
más importante que su incorporación a la familia del pueblo de Dios,
una familia global de creyentes que se extiende por continentes,
idiomas y culturas, que a través del Bautismo comparten en el amor de
Dios que es Padre, Hijo y el Espíritu? La fiesta de hoy nos invita de
nuevo a apreciar este momento para identificar el propio Bautismo de
Jesús, como un catalizador para la gracia que cuenta con todos
nosotros, los bautizados, entre los amados de Dios.
¿Podemos volver a ver en Jesús el amor de Dios manifestado?
¿Podemos volver a percibir la dimensión global e internacional de su
misión de recrear la faz de la tierra, de acuerdo con su plan para la
redención y la salvación de todos? Podemos apreciar lo que de nuevo
nuestro propio bautismo ha hecho por nosotros, hasta el punto de
hacernos parte de una familia internacional de creyentes, ricos y pobres,
jóvenes y viejos, peregrinos que atraviesan varios continentes, en ruta a
un destino celestial con Cristo ? Todo lo que hacemos, como Iglesia,
está conectado con este misterio del amor de Dios, brindando sanación,
esperanza, perdón, dirección, luz para vivir, y la vida nueva en Cristo.
El bautismo de Cristo abrió el camino para que el Espíritu Santo tomara
posesión de cada alma santa que desea una nueva vida en Dios.
Es una gracia sin medida, marcándonos eternamente, y
poniéndonos en un camino para estar con Dios. Oh, cómo debemos
desear ser contados entre la gran multitud que caminan en la luz y en el
amor del Señor. Oremos para apreciar los privilegios espirituales que se
nos han dado en Cristo, haciendo referencia a nuestro Bautismo para la
gloria de Dios.

THE WATERS OF BAPTISM
hen new sod is put in, it needs constant saturation
with water. Landscapers say that this “knits” the
sod to the soil. The same when a branch is grafted onto a
tree: the poultice that joins them at the splice must be kept
wet at all times. Water is the stuff that binds the very cells
of our bodies together. No wonder religions throughout all
times and cultures have used it so prominently. When
Jesus stepped into the Jordan for baptism, he “knit” himself
to what had come before him. By going to the Jordan, he
made himself one with the people of Israel who had
crossed it into their Promised Land. With John the Baptist,
Christ wove himself into the prophetic tradition that
heralded the coming reign of God. He had become fully
human in the waters of Mary’s womb, and by partaking in
the rite of the baptism of repentance, Jesus identified
himself with our sinful, frail humanity. It is through the
waters of baptism that Christ continues to graft new
members onto his Body, the Church; through these waters
we are cleansed from sin and filled with the promise of
grace, given our destiny for eternal life. For us, as for Jesus,
it is also the waters of baptism that inaugurate our mission
to proclaim the Good News.

testimonio. No recuerdo los eventos del día en que
me bautizaron, pero tengo años recordando que, gracias a
Dios y mis padres, estoy bautizado. Trato de vivir mi vida
recordando
mi
bautismo,
buscando
que
mi
comportamiento sea digno de una persona bautizada.
Fui bautizado al mes de haber nacido, y confirmado
cuando tenía sólo un añito (eran otros tiempos). Hice mi
primera (y no última) comunión a los siete años.
Continuaba asistiendo a las clases de catecismo (doctrina),
no obstante, cuando cumplí 17 años, sentí que algo me
faltaba. Mis amigos protestantes me invitaban a sus
Iglesias, pero yo buscaba a Dios en mi Iglesia católica. Un
día, gracias al grupo carismático recibí el bautismo en el
Espíritu Santo y desde ese momento mi vida cambió. Ahora
sé que el Espíritu lo había recibido en mi Bautismo,
Confirmación y Primera Comunión, lo único que debía
hacer era permitirle actuar en mi vida. Creo que en la vida
de muchos cristianos, el Espíritu Santo sigue esperando
que le den permiso de actuar. Y tú, ¿qué esperas? Pídele al
Espíritu que se mueva en tí y vive tu Bautismo.

ABCD WEEKEND COMING UP
It’s that time of the year again. Annually, Catholics throughout South Florida rally in prayerful and
financial support of the Archbishop’s Charities and Development Drive. On the weekend of January 31stFebruary 1st, an invitation, as well as a video, will be presented to the community at all the Masses at the
Church of the Little Flower. During the liturgy, we will all have the opportunity to make our annual pledge
to this important cause. Prayerfully consider the pledge that you will make in support of the manifold
ministries of the Archbishop of Miami. We are one in faith. One in hope. One in love. Together we are
strong.
SYMPOSIUM

February 21 will bring to Little Flower a symposium on “Passing from this life to the Next:
Practical and Pastoral considerations for the Catholic.” It will be an excellent adult continuing
education opportunity addressing a wide range of topics helpful to those needing to learn and
discern. Among the highlights will be a keynote address by the theologian, Father Earl
Fernandes, on the topic of the dignity of human life and death. Surely profound topics worthy
of our hearing. It will be a great way to begin our Lenten reflection on the mystery of life and
death. Join us from 9am to 5pm in Comber Hall. All are welcome.
CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK
During the last week of January, Saint Theresa School joins thousands of Catholic schools across the
country in celebrating National Catholic Schools Week. It is an opportunity to rejoice in the
importance and privilege of the Catholic education system in the United States. All who have
benefitted from this flagship ministry of the Church’s services can attest to the value of growing up in
a Catholic environment and receiving the value-formation and faith enrichment that have
meaningfully shaped lives for decades. Countless successful Catholic men and women have taken
their rightful place as responsible citizens and faith-filled disciples in society and the Church. Pray for
Catholic schools. Pray for the success of Saint Theresa Catholic School. Consider sending your
children or grandchildren to Catholic schools. The benefits are eternal.
ANNIVERSARY YEAR: A SHRINE TO ST. THERESE
The New Year 2015 brings many causes to rejoice. In August of 2015, St. Theresa
Catholic School will open its doors for the 90th time. Shortly after, the Church
of the Little Flower parish will begin its 90th jubilee year, culminating in the
90th anniversary of the dedication of the original church on December 8, 2016.
As part of the anniversary initiatives, the parish will be building a grotto
in
honor of Saint Therese of Lissieux, France, commonly known as the Little
Flower, after whom our parish is named. The grotto, with a life-size statue of
Saint Therese, as well as a memorial brick patio, will be a lovely outdoor oratory
near the front doors of the parish office. Ground-breaking will be in the spring
of 2015. You will hear more about this project as we approach the spring months.
Meanwhile, bricks can be purchased, and memorializations and sponsorships are now available
