In Memoriam
Joseph C. Andreini, Jr.
1946-2011
Joe Andreini, Jr. passed away on March 5, 2011 in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Joe would have
found this ridiculously funny if any of you know Joe's nickname for that town. He and his wife,
Marilyn, had been on a long awaited "Mystery" cruise when he had a very serious stroke from
which he never regained consciousness.
More than four decades ago Joe helped build his first professional level Rally car and the rest is
history. He competed in TSD and Pro Rallies at both the Regional and National levels, and Joe
really COMPETED! One of his favorite sayings (borrowed from the late Gene Henderson) was
"Show me a good loser, and I'll show you a loser." Not nice, but Joe was out to win. His Rally
stories were legend and mostly true.
Joe had been very active with the Sno*Drift Rally for many years as part of scoring and most
lately as the Rally Master or Clerk of the Course. He and his wife spent most of their vacation
time in Atlanta and Lewiston mapping out the route for Sno*Drift. He was very proud of the
work he did and developed many good friends in Montmorency County. He was also very proud
of the rally itself and how well organized and presented it is. He especially loved the ranch stages
and would be jealous of the new stage, "Uncle Joe's Revenge" which he always wanted to
include.
He is greatly missed by his wife, son, family, and all his Rally friends.

Be safe and courteous while watching the Rally:
There was a time when if you could find your way onto the rally route, you could watch from anywhere along
the stage roads. Those times are gone. Insurance companies need to protect themselves from you, so that your
heirs don’t sue if you do something really dumb. So don’t spoil the rally for everyone else: Please watch from
designated Spectator Areas, and don’t wander onto the stage roads. WE ARE ABSOLUTE REQUIRED TO
STOP A STAGE and DISCONTINUE USING THE STAGE ROAD IF SPECTATORS- UNATHORIZED PERSONS- ARE ON OR TOO NEAR THE ROAD.

Please DO NOT use any kind of communication radio within 200 feet of Rally Start or Finish Control. Your
radio can interfere with critical worker communications.

The Start and Finish Control Workers are very busy recording times and communicating with their team and
the competitors. Please DO NOT INTERRUPT them when the Stage is “Hot”

Please watch where you’re walking. Watch for signs and caution tape, which identify the location of timing
equipment. Walk behind the equipment. DO NOT WALK BETWEEN the photocells!
And most importantly; Have FUN!!!
So what is Performance Rally?
Quite simply, it is a flat-out competition over closed
sections of rural roads by modified production
automobiles. It is different than most car races in that:





Competitors race one car at a time against the clock,
usually at one-minute intervals.
Competition is done on limited access roads, blocked
off from "civilian" traffic, rather than on prepared
tracks.
Events can be several hundred miles long, often lasting
for several days.
Each car has a driver and a co-driver (or navigator).
In-between competition stages, the cars travel over
public roads and are required to obey all traffic laws.
The Events
The National Championship consists of six events held throughout the United States. Sno*Drift is the first rally of the 2012
Championship series. The Regional performance rally series is comprised of 27 events this year, taking place in all regions of
the country. The series is sanctioned by Rally America
Most National Rally events feature one or two Regional Rally events, enabling the entry level or regional performance
rallyist to run directly against the national series teams.
Each team is given a route book just prior to the start of the event that describes the course in detail with diagrams of turns,
notations of water crossing, jumps, and spectators, etc. The co-driver (navigator) uses this book along with stage notes
supplied through Rally America, local maps, odometers, and special equipment, even computers to keep the driver on course
and on time.
Transit sections are sections of the event in which the team travels to get from the finish of one stage to the start of the next
stage in modified production vehicles (street legal).
Special Stages are where the real competition takes place. The roads are usually unpaved or seasonal roads, logging trails,
mountain roads, or desert tracks. Checkpoints and traffic controls close all "civilian" access to the stages. The cars arrive at
the "Arrival Time Control" or "ATC" and leave in one-minute or two-minute intervals, depending on road and weather
conditions, and the team’s ranking. The time it takes the competitors to reach the "Finish Time Control" or "FTC" is
accurately measured. A transit section takes them to the next ATC. At the end of the rally, all of the stage times are added up
and the fastest car wins. That, in its essence, is what Performance Rally is all about.
The Cars
Most popular are small American and imported sedans such as: Subaru, Neon, Audi, Ford, VW, Hyundai, Mazda, Mitsubishi,
Saab, and Toyota. All vehicles must be street legal with modifications dependent on the class chosen in which to compete.
The endurance required for Performance Rally makes it an excellent showcase for manufacturers.

Something New at Sno* Drift- APRS
This year, Sno*Drift will incorporate Ham Radio APRS (automatic packet reporting system) operations as an
adjunct to voice communications to help officials at net control stay on top of the event. In addition to workers with APRS capable mobile radios, APRS Trackers will be installed in selected Safety Vehicles and we will
utilize information from competitors equipped with APRS Radios, as well. We will then monitor their locations as they circulate thru the rally course on mapping screens.
Anyone interested can monitor Sno*Drift APRS traffic and you don’t need any APRS equipment, requiring a
Ham license. You can do it on a smart phone web browser or portable computer with 3G capabilities. To
monitor via the web, just go to http://aprs.fi and center on Atlanta, MI.
Additional APRS information and a demonstration of viewing capabilities will be available at Competitor and
Worker Registration.
More information about ham radio can be found at http://arrl.org and APRS at http://aprs.org. A Ham license,
allows you to use more capable software, and smart phone applications.
Scott Rains
Impact on Local Businesses
Sno*Drift will bring more than 2,000 people into
Montmorency County and the surounding areas.
In 2012, we are expecting 70 teams consisting of
two competitors plus their service crew
(generally three or more). It can take 200 - 300
volunteer workers to make a rally run smoothly.
All lodgings in Montmorency County fill rather
quickly for this event and people are now being
referred to Gaylord, Alpena, Onaway, Mio, Rose
City, and West Branch for additional lodging.
Tim Williams
Residents
In cooperation with the Montmorency County
Road commission and the County Sheriff’s Office, Sno*Drift makes a commitment to contact
residents/property owners along the roads being
closed for special stages to explain the event and
obtain signatures of approval. Residents are given specific times that their roads are expected to
be closed and roads themselves are posted with
those times. Sno*Drift has found that most residents are very excited to have the rally come to
town – it’s free entertainment at the foot of their
driveway.
Communications
Volunteer Ham Radio Operators provide communications for the rally. Any licensed Ham Radio
Operators interested in participating should contact
us by email: [email protected].

Sno*Attack 2WD Challenge
This is the third year of the Sno*Attack 2WD Challenge. It is patterned after MaxAttack!, which is a national series devoted to
raising the level of two wheel drive rally racing in the United States. Our main sponsor is Thayer Mazda, Livonia, MI and supported by the Team O’Neil Rally and Car Control Center, Dalton, NH and the Rally America Store. The first two years we had
18 competitors participating each year; this year we have increased the number to at least 24. The race within a rally combines
both days results to determine the winners.
Last year the winners were:
1st Place – Dillon VanWay
2nd Place – Chris Duplessis
3rd Place – Chris Greenhouse
4th Place – Matt Bushore
5th Place – Billy Mann

Watch for these 2WD vehicles as they pass the spectator areas. You will be able to spot them by the Sno*Attack decal which
will be prominently displayed. A lot of people think that the 4WD vehicles are the best to watch because they are the fastest,
but the 2WD ones are the most fun to watch as they have to use all their skill to negotiate the route while getting the power to
only two drive wheels.
Sno*Drift would like to thank all the sponsors and participants in the 2012 Sno*Attack

Need to Know When the Rally Cars Will Be on the Road Near Your House or Cabin?
All the roads that are part of Sno*Drift this year are listed below. Each section of road to be used has been "posted" with a bright pink or green sign near the point where traffic will be controlled. The Access
Restricted times indicate when rally officials will regulate traffic on the designated section of road. The Road Closed times indicate when to expect rally cars. Never enter the road during these times! The
rally usually runs on time, but can be a little early or a little late. If you need additional information, or are unsure of when, or if, Sno*Drift will use a road near your property, please contact us at
the A-Win-Sands Motel, (989) 785-2337. Thank You. The Sno*Drift Organizing Committee

Life Takes a Turn, Press the Accelerator
Matthew Noble Marker’s Dream for SubaRoots Lives on
SubaRoots Rally suffered a major loss when Driver Matt Marker was killed during the
Olympus Rally last April. Anything but typical, Matt’s charisma fueled a love of the sport
that followed wherever he traveled. Following his death, the team made a decision to pull
together. Under the leadership of Matt’s parents, Don and Michelle Marker, SubaRoots will
still be represented this year at Sno*Drift with three teams racing in pursuit of Matt’s dream
to make rally racing available and accessible to everyone interested in the sport Michelle
Marker explained, “Matthew’s dream was to promote rally racing. SubaRoots Rally is a
group or family of people that represent Matthew’s memory. They belong to Matthew’s
family. Everybody helps each other out in the spirit of Matthew.”
Last year, SubaRoots purchased Matt’s former car, a 1994 Subaru Impreza. Chris Gordon,
Matt’s former co-driver, alongside fellow teammate Jenny Majszak, took the car for a trial
race at LSPR in October.
In the past month, the car has undergone a number of updates including new tires, alternator,
clutch, and brakes, among other repairs. Grant Hoxie of Subie Guys in Traverse City, donated time and some of the parts
to help get the car running. “The car is pretty much a stock Subaru Impreza. It started as a 1994 Subaru Impreza Brighton
2-wheel drive and Matt bought the parts out of another wrecked Subaru and turned it into an all-wheel drive with a roll
cage.”
Driving the ’94 Impreza are driver Ian Seppanen and
co-driver Jenny Majszak in the Open Light class. Also
representing the SubaRoots crew are Samir and
Rachelle Kaltak of RTK, and Amanda and Desiray
Skelly of Noble Star Racing. Both RTK (626) and
Noble Star 853) are racing under Open Light.
The SubaRoots group is representative of a family of
teams working together in memory of Marker,
encouraging and supporting one another with their
passion for the sport, knowledge, and occasionally a
spare part.
“SubaRoots lives on. We’re now helping each other out just like they would have done anyway, but with an even stronger
sense of ‘team’ holding us together,” said Marker.
SubaRoots publicist Derrick Bachi said Matt brought everyone
together, “And we’re sticking together,” he concluded.
Chris Gordon explained, in rally racing you hit the gas on the
corner to keep on the path. “Matt would often say, ‘Life takes
another turn, I better push the gas.’
