What on earth is a bull and a bear –
and where does an ostrich come into it?

As a relative financial market novice – far removed from the dizzying heights
of the Warren Buffetts of the world – I have ventured to dip my toe into
the realm of financial commentary from the perspective of a 22 year old
graduate. As I embark on my new career, I feel compelled to write a little piece
for those of you in your twenties who would like to invest, but are perhaps
intimidated because you may not fully understand the lingo. Perhaps you, like
me, keep seeing references in articles to bulls and bears (and even ostriches)
while wondering what on earth any of this has to do with money?!
Without being ‘that’ person who says “investing is really simple” and then
proceeds to talk in another language full of technical jargon, I should clarify
that, essentially, investing means putting your money to work for you. Societal
norms dictate that you earn an income by getting a job and working, which
is exactly what most of us do. However, if you want to earn more money, you
have to work more hours – and there is (thankfully) a limit to how many hours
a day we can work. At this point, we can’t clone ourselves so that we can work
more jobs; however, we can send our money out to work for us. This way,
whilst we are working, partying or shopping on ASOS, we can also be earning
money. For those of you who have seen the famous film “Wall Street”, you’ll
know that money never sleeps…but that doesn’t mean that you can’t.
Putting your money to work can increase your earning potential whether
or not you receive a pay rise, decide to work overtime or get a promotion.
This includes putting money into stocks, bonds and funds, among many
other things. Sometimes people use jargon such as “investment vehicles”
to describe these options, when what they really mean is “a way to invest”.
It’s easy to relate to the fact that people invest because they want to
increase their freedom and afford the things they want in life; however,
what I’ve already learnt in my short career so far is that investing is
becoming more of a necessity.
In the face of onerous student loans, relatively low-paying entry-level
positions and a lack of budgeting experience, young adults often face
financial challenges. If I had a pound for every time an influencing adult in
my life told me to start saving for a house or, dare I say it, retirement, I would
be half-way to buying said house and early retirement! The problem is that
those years seem such a long way off compared to the short-term purchases
that could be made now. However, the irony is that young people have a
singular advantage in the investing world – purely because they have that
most precious of investing variables: time.
In terms of investing, time is a far more valuable commodity than any that
can be bought and sold on the FTSE 100.This concept of time being on your
side is termed compounding (short for compound interest) and allegedly
described as “the eighth wonder of the world” by Albert Einstein. I don’t
know about you, but I definitely want in on any wonder of the world if it
makes me money. At this point, I hope you already feel a lot wealthier than
when we started.

Compounding, simply put, enables you to grow an investment by reinvesting
the earnings and, as mentioned earlier, puts your money to work. By
continuously reinvesting your earnings over time, you are exponentially
increasing your return on investment. For example, if my friend Emily started
investing at 25, and my friend Joe started investing at 35. Ultimately, due to
Emily’s early start she contributes around 33% more than Joe over the course
of her career, but Emily ends up with almost twice as much wealth as Joe
does. For those of you who may be reading this and thinking that hindsight is
a wonderful thing, it’s still not too late!
History demonstrates that investing returns significantly more than bank
interest on your money over the same period. So, given the current interest
rate climate, there has never been a better time to start investing. Of course
– and this is where my new career intrudes – there is always risk in investing;
indeed, without risk there can be no return. But in the long term, that precious
element of time gives your investments the ability to ride out the effects of
volatility associated with market crashes and short-term booms. The key is to
not be drawn into chasing returns.
Personally, I have found it hard to come to terms with the fact that my
hard-earned money could potentially end up in an investment worth less
than its original cash value, but again that is short-term thinking. The sad
reality is that by not doing anything with your money, your cash loses value
due to the corrosive effect of inflation. Even with interest rates at almost zero,
cash loses value over time, and £10,000 in a savings account today will not
have the same buying power in 40 years’ time.
In summary, there is an ocean of investment tools out there, but you have to
avoid allowing its vast expanse to overwhelm you. The bottom line is that you
are condemned to losing money by not doing anything with it – and we all
have to start somewhere. Try not to drown in the financial jargon that floods
the media and remember that, for now, time is on your side. In the words of
President Snow: “And may the odds be ever in your favour”. Happy investing!

Following recent changes to the UK’s domicile rules, there is likely
to be increasing interest in emigration from the UK, especially by
those wishing to reduce the tax burden for future generations.
Those that wish to do this but still want to maintain the close
geographic connections to the UK may consider Guernsey an
attractive destination.
Tax Capping
Guernsey undoubtedly has many attractions including a high
standard of living, safe environment, stable political framework
and stunning scenery and coastline.
Currently, the maximum amount of tax payable by an individual
can be capped at £220,000 per annum.
In addition the tax system in Guernsey is relatively benign with no
capital taxes, inheritance taxes, VAT or GST. Guernsey maintains a
simple flat rate of income tax for individuals of 20% and companies
have a standard rate of 0%.
There are three types of Guernsey residence status for individuals:
Resident only – broadly spending between 91 and 182 days in
Guernsey and 91 days or more in another jurisdiction in a year
of charge. Such individuals are taxable on their worldwide
income at 20% unless they elect, annually, to pay the Standard
Charge of £30,000. Payment of the Standard Charge can be cost
effective for individuals if the majority of their income derives
from non-Guernsey sources.
Solely Resident – resident as above and not treated as resident
in any other jurisdiction.
Individuals that fall into the solely or principally resident
Alternatively, individuals moving to Guernsey, who have little or
no Guernsey source income, can benefit from a lower annual tax
cap of £110,000.
Pensions
Types of Tax Residence
Principally Resident – broadly spending 182 or more days in
Guernsey in a year of charge.

after personal allowances and other deductions such as
mortgage interest in certain circumstances. In addition, relief
is available against certain taxes paid outside of Guernsey and
individuals can elect to have their tax liability capped.
Under the terms of the Double Tax Treaty with the UK, pension
receipts will be taxable in the country of residence. Individuals
emigrating from the UK are likely, therefore, to be subject to a
lower tax rate on their pension income than they would have been
in the UK where the maximum income tax rate is 45%. Please also
note the tax capping provisions above.
Furthermore, a Guernsey resident individual may transfer UK
pension rights into a Guernsey pension scheme which may
ultimately remove the pension payments from the scope of UK
tax altogether.
Tax relief may also be available annually for pension contributions
of up to £50,000 made to a Guernsey scheme.
