DEAR FRIENDS:
Recent events have highlighted the fact that
we as a nation still have some ways to go in our
understanding of the racial divide that still exists in our
country. The 50th anniversary of the March from Selma to
Montgomery, Alabama highlighted the fact that progress
has been made but we still have some distance to go to
achieve total equality. This, like so many social issues,
clearly presents the issues but the complexity of the
situations also demonstrate that there is no easy resolution
of the division that is still there in some hearts. And within
hearts is where this issue must obviously be changed. Until
people, on both sides of the divide, are able to look at each
other with the conviction that we are all created as equals
by God, there will never be a resolution of these difficulties.
As we commemorate the anniversary of this sad day in our
history let us join our prayers with other people of good will
as we continue to strive to make our nation a united one,
under God. Certainly it is the prayer of Jesus that we be
one. May we each do our part to alleviate this divide and
accept each other as brothers and sisters.
God bless,
Father Tom

THIS SUNDAY’S READINGS:
2 Chronicles 36:14-16, 19-23;
Psalm 137:1-2, 3, 4-5, 6;
Ephesians 2:4-10,
John 3:14-21
Cycle A - Scrutiny Mass at 11:30am: 1 Samuel 16:1b, 67, 10-13a; Psalm 23:1-3a, 3b-4, 5, 6; Ephesians 5:5-14;
John 9:1, 6-9, 13-17, 34-38
In today’s Gospel at the 11:30am Mass we experience
Jesus healing a man born blind. It is God in Jesus Christ
who gives us the eyes of faith to see more fully the mystery
of divine love. St. Francis de Sales explains how God
entices us to on-going conversion:
Only God can enlighten us and open our blind eyes. When
God gives us faith, God enters us and incites our mind
through inspirations. So pleasantly does God propose the
mysteries of faith to us that, without doubt or opposition, we
consent to them.
Faith, the best friend of our spirit, brings us to love the
beauty of the truths of the mystery of God. When we are
exposed to the rays of the noonday sun, we scarcely see its
light before we quickly feel its heat. So it is with the light of
faith. As soon as the light of faith casts its light on us, we
feel the heat of heavenly love. Faith makes us know with
certitude that God exists and that God is infinite goodness.
When temptations against faith start raising questions, we
have to answer with our heart, not reason. Reason admits
its limitations. While the mystery of God transcends our
ability to reason, our faith in God is eminently reasonable.
Like St. Augustine, let us affirm our faith by crying out, “Lord
I do believe, but help me in my unbelief!”
Let us faithfully concentrate on nourishing God’s gift of ongoing conversion with awe and confidence. Let us make
God’s love effective in our lives by remaining steady and
persevering in our good desires and holy resolutions.
Without forcing or doing any violence to us, Jesus draws us
to Himself by bonds of love and gentleness so that we
begin to do all things through holy love. Then let us not be
afraid of Our Lord who wants to take full possession of our
hearts. Rather, let us surrender ourselves lovingly into the
hands of Our Savior, who desires to do great things in us, if
we let Him open our eyes.

NEXT WEEKEND’S READINGS:
Next weekend
we celebrate The Fifth Sunday in Lent. Please prepare
for Mass and the Homily by reflecting on these texts from
God’s Word:
Jeremiah 31:31-34 Jeremiah proclaimed this oracle as the
people were going into exile because of their infidelity. God,
however, remains faithful. By means of a new covenant He
will inscribe Himself on the people’s hearts and thus make
an unfaltering fidelity dawn in the depths of their being.
Psalm 51:3-4, 12-13, 14-15 Create a clean heart in me, O
God. This, the fourth of the penitential psalms, is a prayer
proclaiming repentance and requesting forgiveness.
Hebrews 5:7-9 Christ felt anguish in the face of death. He
experienced the failure of communication between God and
humanity with an extraordinary intensity because He was
Himself both divine and human. His perfect obedience opens
the road to life and to reconciliation.
John 12:20-33 Even before the cross has been prepared
for His Son, the Father reveals its fruitfulness. The Greeks
desiring to see Jesus foreshadow the hour of the assembling
of the nations. The voice from heaven promises glory to the
crucified.
for those who have asked for our
prayers: Lee Bauer; Jennifer Benedict; Colleen Booth;
Mary Eckert; Theresa Flagstad; Marianne Gallagher;
Lorenzo Jabonete; Rosa Van Stavoren; and for all who
are sick; and for all caregivers who minister to the sick.
When you call to add a name to our prayer list, please leave your
name and number as a contact and let us know what the illness is.
Before calling, please be sure you have spoken to the person or a
member of the family about adding their name—we do not want to
inadvertently disregard someone's desire for privacy.
Names of those who are sick or injured will be kept on the list for
three weeks unless you specifically request a shorter period of
time or call to ask that the name be removed. Boldface type is
used for names that are new to the list this week.
RCIA - THE SECOND SCRUTINY
This
weekend at the 11:30am Sunday Mass we celebrate the
Second Scrutiny with our Elect. As they prepare for Baptism
at the Easter Vigil, we pray that Christ, the light of the world,
will free them (and us) from the blindness that allows us to
be indifferent to the suffering of the world. We ask for
deliverance from the social sins of failing to seek justice,
peace and reconciliation; the sins that allow us to close our
eyes to those who suffer from poverty, homelessness,
racism, and war.
L ENTEN
SERVICE
R ECONCILIATION
“Like a shepherd he feeds
his flock; in his arms he gathers the
lambs, Carrying them in his bosom,
leading the ewes with care.” Isaiah 40:11
Please join us and participate in our
Lenten Reconciliation Service, Tuesday,
March 24th at 7:00pm. In the Sacrament of Reconciliation
we meet the Lord, who, like a shepherd, wants to grant us
forgiveness and the grace to live a renewed life in Him. In
this sacrament He prepares us to receive Him free from
serious sin, with a lively faith, earnest hope, and sacrificial
love in the Eucharist. The Church sees confession as so
important that she requires that every Catholic go at least
once a year. CCC #1457-1458.

KNIGHTS
OF COLUMBUS KOVAR WEEKEND
Haven’t you seen them year after year out in front of church
around Mass times on a Spring weekend, offering Tootsie
Rolls in return for free-will donations for KOVAR? Did you
ever wonder what KOVAR is, and what our Knights have to
do with it? KOVAR is a Virginia Knights of Columbus charity
established in 1971 that has raised over $14.5 million to
assist citizens with intellectual disabilities. KOVAR is also a
Platinum Sponsor of Special Olympics, donating over
$50,000 each year. You may have read an article in the
March 5-11, 2015 edition of “The Arlington Catholic Herald”
about Marian Homes in Fairfax County opening a third
group home, with assistance from KOVAR and other
benefactors. Our Knights will be at it again next weekend,
March 21st - 22nd after all the Masses. Please consider
offering what you can to help the Virginia Knights of
Columbus help God’s special people. For more information,
visit http://www.kovarva.org.
RCIA - EASTER VIGIL RECEPTION

year at the conclusion of the Easter Vigil
service we gather to celebrate this great feast
and to welcome those who have been baptized
into the Catholic Church at the Vigil. We need
many helping hands to make this a truly gala
celebration. Consider donating your talents in
decorating, baking, setting up or cleaning up. If you can

CATHOLIC RELIEF SERVICES
“Amen, I say to you,
whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did
for me” (Mt 25:40). Today, we are reminded that Jesus identified
himself with our poorest brothers and sisters. The Catholic Relief
Services Collection serves Jesus in the victims of human
trafficking, in those who suffer from unjust laws, and in those who
need pastoral care and humanitarian assistance across the globe.
Through your support with today’s Collection, you help Jesus in
disguise. Please be generous.

Because of so much inclement weather-related

time, good fellowship, and a good meal in support of
these teens.

require our assistance and support. We are asking all families in
our parish to support the Bishop’s Lenten Appeal (BLA) to the
fullest extent that they are able. Thank you for helping us share
the Joy of the Gospel through your support of the BLA!
