“Music in Prague 1760–1810”
An exhibition held on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the birth of Wolfgang
Amadeus Mozart
The exhibition held on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the birth
of W.A.Mozart will give a complex insight into the musical life in Prague between
1760 and 1810. It aims at introducing the composers (such as Jan Antonín
KoÏeluch and Vinzenz Maschek) and virtuosos (such as V. Maschek and
J. K. Kuchafi) who lived in Prague and also at pointing out the venues where their
music was played – theatres, monasteries, choir lofts and music bands of nobility.
Precious music collections will be mentioned, for example the collections
of the Strahov and Bfievnov Monasteries and the Convent of Nuns of St Elizabeth.
The exhibits on display, namely sheet music, theatre posters, opera libretti,
prints (pictures of Prague and composers) and paintings, will come mainly from
the collections of the music history department of the Czech Museum of Music
and from other institutions, such as the Strahov Monastery, Bfievnov Monastery,
the music department of the National Library, the National Gallery, the Museum
of the City of Prague and the Memorial of National Literature. The exhibition
will of course also remember Mozart’s Prague visits. The exhibition will be
attractive for the general public as well as the connoisseurs. A richly illustrated
catalogue will be published.
Venue: the exhibition halls of the Czech Museum of Music, Karmelitská 2, 118 00
Prague 1
Opening hours: daily except Tuesdays, 10–18.

„Domov není místo, kde bydlíš,
ale místo, kde ti rozumějí.“
(Christian Morgernstern)
knížat a králů.
vlivy slovanské, německé a židovské kultury.
i koncentrací památek.
historicky silné vazby s dalšími městy střední Evropy a i přes ohromný rozvoj, který v posledních letech podstoupila, si dokázala uchovat stejnou tvář
Ačkoli od těch dob uplynula bezmála dvě a půl století, tóny Mozartovy hudby ještě stále zní kdesi nad červení malostranských střech a v křivolakých
uličkách Pražské památkové rezervace.

1 September – 31 December, EXHIBITION, The Prague State Opera
“Mozartean exhibition”
At present the staff of the Prague State Opera is putting together the scenario
of a large-scale thematic exhibition that should reflect the tradition of Mozartean
productions in the history of this opera house. Although in Prague Mozart’s name
is most often connected with the Estates Theatre, the present-day Prague State
Opera and its predecessors can also boast excellent productions of the great
composer’s masterpieces, featuring some of the world’s famous singers.
In the days of the New German Theatre, Mozart’s bust – along with those
of Goethe and Schiller – even graced the front of the theatre building (they were
removed due to the post-war wave of anti-German sentiment and what became
of them is still unknown). The exhibition that can be seen in the PSO lounges from
the beginning of the next season to the end of 2006, the Mozartean anniversary
year, wants to draw attention to some interesting, though not so well-known
aspects of Mozart’s Prague cult.

“Don Juan in Prague“
Don Juan in Prague is a contemporary adaptation of Mozart’s Don Giovanni.
Among the international cast most prominent is Iva Bittova, the Moravian avantgarde singer, violinist, and actress as Donna Elvira. While completely faithful to
Mozart and DaPonte’s original score and libretto, Don Juan in Prague (adapted
and directed by David Chambers, theatre and opera director and producer,
professor at The Yale University School of Drama) employs digital mediacomputer-generated music, graphics, and video-as well as an onstage string quartet
Ethel who also participate in the story told inside contemporary scenography
featuring photographs by Jan Saudek. Developed by several contemporary
American stage artists with Ms. Bittova, Don Juan in Prague has played to standing
ovations and rave reviews in the US since its première in New York in August 2003.

1 – 30 November, EXHIBITION, The National Library of the Czech Republic – Clementinum
Mozart Memorial at the Clementinum
Mozart’s relation to the Clementinum is an integral part of the great topic
“Mozart and Prague”. He visited it already during his first visit to Prague in January
1787. The National Library takes pride in the Mozart Memorial at the Clementinum
which collects rare period copies and prints of Mozart’s compositions. The Mozart
Memorial aims at its own further development, supplementation of facts and
compilation of bibliography on Mozart. It was established in 1837, four years prior
to the founding of the Salzburg Mozarteum, and so it is historicly the first
Mozarteum in the world, reflecting the long admiration of Mozart in Prague.
