The Bigger Picture
• All of the evil, wickedness / Murder, Abuse, Treachery,
• Even the best…….What is God saying???
1) Where EVIL lies – deceptive destructive power / Alex.Solzh.
• “The Line between good and evil does not run between us and them, it
runs through each one of us.”
2) Points to the TRUE SOLUTION – Jesus Christ His Son
• No method or man (Political party or person) - Yes Vote
• Raises up leaders / a means, not ends / William Wilberforce
• The critical factor = The Spiritual state of the people
3) Everything is still a part of a bigger unstoppable plan
• Still being worked to God’s Greater Glory
• Messiah still came the 1st time
• Messiah will still come the 2nd time
• Nothing can stop it / all things moving towards it

Lived under Elijah’s shadow
New Testament
Platform & Periphery
Most of us have or will live under someone else's shadow (parent, friend, ministry leader, etc.)
Most us have or will have others in our shadow (child, disciple, etc.).
Do you know how to handle being in someone else's shadow?
Do you compete, resent, run away from them, etc.?
Do you know how to help those who live in your shadow?
Do not let size be a distraction or hindrance
Do WHAT God has called you to do WHERE he has called you to do it
A Desire Not Answered
•
•
•
•
Years before, Elijah wanted to die in the wilderness
Sometimes / God’s character / your position in Christ
God did not honor/answer that request
Instead, he was translated to heaven “God always gives His best to those who
leave the choice with Him”
• Seen as a TYPE of something yet future
• The Rapture of The Church
Naaman the Syrian – Ch. 5
• Luke 4:27 And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Elisha the
prophet, and none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian.”

A Leper / Leprosy in Scripture is a TYPE of sin.
Beautiful and accurate picture of the Gospel, Grace, and Salvation
Also a good picture of “how we orient to grace as believers”
Naaman / A Great Man / Military Victor / Honorable
Incurable by human means / tried to cover it up, but could not cure it
Hebrew slave girl / waited on Naaman’s wife / wanted Naaman cured
News got to king of Syria / sent him to the king of Israel / with reward
“I am not God. I cannot heal him!”/ sent to wrong man / goes to Elisha
Sent servant / go and wash in the Jordan River seven times!
God was not only healing of leprosy / but also of pride
Prov 6:16–19 lists seven things that God hates. 1st on list: “A proud look”
•
James 4:6 says, “But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God
resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.”
Naaman – Pride – Sin - Leprosy
• Paul put it like this, “For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that
is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to
think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of
faith” (Rom. 12:3).
• Pride is placing excessive value on self. It demands more than its worth.
• “I wish I could buy that man for what he is worth and sell him for what he thinks he is worth”
• Pride is the difference between what you are and what you think you are
• Christ and pride do not go together.
• You cannot be proud and at the same time trust Christ
• Went away in a rage / “Why should I go and dip in the Jordan?
• Many hate to come to the Cross of Christ. It is a place of shame.
• Instead, like Naaman, want to do something great
• Servant / “If the prophet had asked you to do something great, you would
have done it.” (What’s humiliating to you? What do you think you’re above?)
• Perhaps God wants to heal you of something?
• Finally, in humility, he obeyed / he was clean
GEHAZI’S SIN AND THE PENALTY
• Elisha will not accept payment for what God has done
• Servant named Gehazi / wanted reward / pursued / thought would bless
• Hides the gifts / lies about it all / Don’t lie to a prophet
• The leprosy of Naaman shall cleave unto thee, and unto thy seed for ever
•
•
•
•
•
•
•

The great sin of Naaman was pride. The great sin of Gehazi was greed
Let me be free from covetousness that I will be content with what I have.
Contrast the servant girl of vv. 2–3 with Gehazi.
She was a slave, yet joyfully witnessed for the Lord;
He was a free man in his own land, yet was interested only in himself.
She brought Naaman to the place of salvation
He ruined the message of grace by his sin.
She had no material gain, but she did have the Lord’s blessing
He went home with material wealth, yet he lost everything.
A 2nd servant actually experienced something that informs his life forever
Opened His Eyes - 2 Kings 6
• Knew plans / King of Syria / sent army to capture / in Dothan
• Elisha’s servant / terrified / city surrounded / Elisha prayed
•
2 Kings 6:16–17 So he answered, “Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with
17
them.” And Elisha prayed, and said, “LORD, I pray, open his eyes that he may see.” Then the LORD
opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw. And behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of
fire all around…..
• Invisible War / Cntl Alt Del / Able to see / God’s protective forces
• Hebrews 1:14 Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to minister for those who will
inherit salvation?
• We have amazing unseen but real resources available for the accomplishment
of that which we have been called to do
• Utilization of these resources will result in our inheriting salvation (glorification)
for service rendered
• If you really believed this would you do anything different?
• God open our eyes to what is available to us thru your grace

Athaliah / Ahaziah’s mother / Omri’s GD
2 Kings 11:1 When Athaliah the mother of
Ahaziah saw that her son was dead, she arose
and destroyed all the royal heirs.
Jesus the Messiah: Direct descendant
Line ends / No Messiah
Jehosheba / Ahaziah’s sister
Hid Joash / 6 years
God remains faithful to His covenant (2 Sam. 7) Davidic Covenant
God Preserves the Davidic Line
The Line of Messiah / Christ

Hezekiah & Sennacherib 2 Kings 18-19
• Rab–shakeh, / henchman / king of Assyria
• Outside gates / Taunts & Insults / Threatens
• Sends letter of warning to Hezekiah / God is deceiving you
• Hezekiah went up into the house of the Lord, and spread it before the Lord
[2 Kings 19:14]
• Decision Magazine / Leaders calling for prayer
• Isaiah “Don’t worry about this man / God will deal with him.
• We move ourselves from the place of faith and trust in God so that God does not
move in our behalf.
• Save thou us out of his hand, that all
the kingdoms of the earth may know that thou art the Lord God, even thou only [2 Kings 19:19].
For I will defend this city, to save it, for mine own sake, and for my servant David’s sake [2 Kings 19:34].
And it came to pass that night, that the angel of the Lord went out,
and smote in the camp of the Assyrians an hundred fourscore and
five thousand: and when they arose early in the morning, behold,
they were all dead corpses [2 Kings 19:35].
The Angel of The Lord
The Lord Jesus Christ
Same Personality we saw with Joshua before Jericho
And it came to pass, as he was worshipping in the house of Nisroch
his god, that Adrammelech and Sharezer his sons smote him with
the sword: and they escaped into the land of Armenia. And Esar–
haddon his son reigned in his stead [2 Kings 19:36–37].
