Annual Report - Union County Chamber of Commerce
2015 Accomplishments
1. Continued the Workforce Development Coalition which consists of leaders from various organizations for the purpose of identifying and implementing proactive solutions to the workforce needs of businesses in Union County. The Coalition includes representatives from the Union County Public Schools, South Piedmont Community College, Wingate University, and other community
partners along with representatives from business and manufacturing.
2. Grew membership in Women In Business by 68% in 2015. This dynamic program continues to provide leadership development,
networking opportunities, referrals, and meaningful information specifically for women. • Hosted four quarterly luncheons and four socials, including a golf social at Monroe Country Club Golf Course.
• Created a new professional development event featuring keynote speaker Molly Barker (founder of Girls on the Run), and
four dynamic women speakers from across the state. This unique event had over 140 women in attendance from across our
region.
• Hosted a fall fashion show featuring Women In Business members as models. The fashion show highlighted women’s clothing from the fashion icon, Belk, as well as locally-owned member stores in Union County. The fashion show was a joint
effort of the Women in Business program and the Chamber’s “Shop Union County” program.
3. As part of the Public Policy program, the Union County Chamber:
• Hosted a Government Affairs luncheon in March featuring Union County Manager Cindy Coto to provide a “State of Union
County” to Chamber members and guests. • Hosted a Government Affairs luncheon in October featuring members of the Union County Delegation from Raleigh. State
representatives Dean Arp, Craig Horn, and Mark Brody gave updates from the 2015 legislative session and provided insight to
upcoming legislative issues affecting Union County businesses.
4. The Chamber continued to lead the effort to support the construction of the East-West Connector known as the Monroe Expressway. This important transportation project will benefit not only Union County but the surrounding region.
5. Hosted a Nonprofit Showcase Business Networking Luncheon with the largest attendance in the history of this event. This tabletop trade show provides an opportunity for Chamber member nonprofits to network with business members and showcase
their organization’s work in the community. Keynote speakers Jason Walle and Ben Richardson from Big Ring spoke to attendees
about the importance of business partnering with nonprofits to improve the quality of life for all in our community.
6. As part of the Shop Union County program, the Union County Chamber:
• Grew the Lunch Mob program to introduce Chamber members to restaurant members throughout Union County. In cooperation with the restaurant, the Chamber invites members to the local eatery—no formal program or agenda, and the restaurant
provides a discount to the attendees. It is an informal way to network with other members and to support a local Chamber
restaurant member. • Hosted the Annual Back-to-School Business Expo. This business-to-consumer (B2C) table top tradeshow held at Monroe
Crossing during the high-traffic back to school shopping weekend increases consumer awareness of the many products and
services offered by Chamber members in Union County. • Created and implemented a “Shop Small” social media campaign in support of Small Business Saturday. The purpose of this
campaign is to encourage residents to shop with locally-owned Chamber-member businesses.
7. Created a new program to meet the needs of young professionals 21-39 years of age. Young Professionals of Union County
(YPUC) held its kickoff event in November. This new program will provide professional development opportunities, opportunities
to network with other young professionals, mentoring, and a community service component.
8. Created a new Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) Roundtable to meet the specific needs of EHS professionals in Union
County. This Roundtable meets for the purpose of networking, benchmarking, and sharing best practices. The group includes
EHS professionals from leading industry, healthcare, and government. The Roundtable will host its first public event in the first
quarter of 2016.
President’s Letter
The foundation of a strong community is a healthy business community. We
are fortunate in Union County to have a diverse, vibrant business community
consisting of small and large retail/service businesses, a varied agri-business
community with deep historical significance, and a manufacturing concentration other communities envy. A prosperous business community provides jobs
for our residents, a tax base to build and maintain our infrastructure, income
to support our quality of life through contributions to our non-profits, and support of our educational institutions. The foundation of a healthy business community is a dynamic Chamber of
Commerce. YOUR Chamber is the cornerstone of the business community
providing opportunities to connect with others, providing professional and
personal development opportunities, collaborating with community partners
to meet the challenges businesses face, advocating on behalf of our members,
and acting as a primary resource for our members. The work of the Chamber
is crucial to the success of our members, and ultimately to the success of our
community. This year was a great success! In 2015 your Chamber implemented new
programs, strengthened existing programs, and created opportunities for our
members to “make connections” throughout the year. Attendance at our
events grew dramatically; members utilized the Chamber as a resource for their business, and grew their businesses leveraging the connections they made through the Chamber.
We solidified the Chamber’s role as “The Business Connection in Union County”. We provided solutions to the
common challenges all businesses face and differentiated our services based on the focus areas we serve. We
achieved this by doing what we do best—making connections. This was a great year for YOUR Chamber and our members. Yet as I look to the future, I am confident the best is
yet to come. Wishing you the very best,
Pat Kahle

Manufacturing Awareness Week
Sept. 28 - Oct. 2, 2015
Each year the first Friday in October is designated as National Manufacturing Day. For the second year, the Union County Chamber of Commerce facilitated a week-long celebration of manufacturing in Union
County under the brand, Make It in Union County. The purpose of the week’s activities was:
to increase awareness of the positive benefits of manufacturing in our community,
to promote manufacturing as a top career choice, and
to thank manufacturers in Union County for the jobs they create, the taxes they pay to support the infrastructure of our county, and the thousands of volunteer hours and dollars they contribute to local charitable organizations.
The Chamber reached out to community partners and manufacturers to create a Manufacturing Awareness Task Force to plan and
facilitate activities, create and execute a marketing plan, and engage local students, parents, and educators.
The Task Force was led by the Chamber and included representatives from Union County Public Schools, Union Academy Charter
School, South Piedmont Community College, Monroe-Union County Economic Development, local manufacturers and local marketing experts.
The marketing plan included significant presence on social media (Facebook, Twitter, and Linkedin), constant updates to the Make
It in Union County website, speakers in area high schools, field trips, and posters, handouts and other communication directly to
students in the area high schools.
Union County Public School Guidance Counselors and Career Development Coordinators toured Greiner Bio-One and Vanguard Pai
Lung prior to the big event to learn about manufacturing and about the activities to be held during Manufacturing Awareness Week.
Speakers from various manufacturers across the county spoke to local high schools reaching over 1,000 students and educators.
Make it in Union County
Manufacturing Awareness Week
Charlotte Pipe and Foundry-Plastics Division and Vanguard Pai Lung hosted field trips for students from Union County
Public Schools and Union Academy Charter School. Public Open House events were hosted at: ASSA ABLOY Entrance Systems, Goulston Technologies, Greiner Bio-One
and Scott Safety.
A Manufacturing Showcase Event was held at South Piedmont Community College with 38 table top exhibits featuring
local manufacturers, Union County Public Schools and South Piedmont Community College. Students were able to
use a welding simulator, try on firefighting safety equipment from Scott Safety, play a drum from Ludwig Drums, and
talk with leaders from local manufacturers.
The week’s activities culminated in a Manufacturing Celebration Breakfast attended by over 110 manufacturing executives and community leaders. This year’s keynote speaker was Barnaby Keller from Keller Technology who spoke
about workforce development and the needs of the manufacturing community.
During Manufacturing Awareness Week 2015, over 1870 people were reached through the schools, speakers, tours,
field trips, open house events, manufacturing showcase, and the breakfast event. Even more received information through
Make It in Union County’s website and various social media sites.

County, participated in Union County Public Schools’ 2015
Middle School Career Day to increase awareness about manufacturing among middle school students.
