get exposed while on the road.
As ADB announced an assured support of 22 million dollars of much-needed aid money
for the Valley traffic management in the first week of June,
what actually is needed is urgent
amendments to the 25 year old
system, for the old traffic laws
can no longer curb Kathmandu’s
bizarre and chaotic traffic.
Every sane driver who ventures out on the roads of Kathmandu will agree that besides
the normal set of eyes, one needs
a pair in the back and the sides
too, to handle the valley’s traffic chaos. It is a mean jungle out
there and definitely not a place
for the weak hearted. The unexpected turns, quick and sudden appearances of vehicles, are
instances which can throw the
most composed of people out
of gear. Your saving grace has
to be your alertness! Similar to
the political system of the country there is complete anarchy on
the roads of Kathmandu. Rules
are not just violated; they are
broken rampantly and torn to
shreds. It is totally happening in
Kathmandu for three people to
squeeze onto a bike, to take the
wrong turn on a one-way street,
to park anywhere and everywhere and to make a quick Uturn on a ‘No turn’ sign. Overtaking takes place from all sides;
if one could fly they would have
done that too long time back.
Indicators make no sense whatsoever and it becomes mandatory to carefully look into the side
mirror to make sure no bikes or
cars with a death wish is trying
to overtake. And the frustration
level reaches a high when some
vehicle moving ahead conveniently decides to turn all of a
sudden without signaling. The
art of inching into someone
else’s lane has been mastered by
many oblivious to the fact that
denying the breaking distance
can be fatal. To add to it, blasting
horns and flashing headlights
are egocentric gestures which,
besides the warning factor can
instigate to bring out the devil
in us. So what is it that makes
people lose control over the vehicles that they are driving?

driving have all different goals,
and all of them are in a constant
hurry to reach their destination as quickly as possible. In
addition, anxiety, the constant
struggle to achieve more in less
time, the stress of fast paced
city life, disregard for others, are
all manifested in the behavior
of a person. And this behavior
overtakes the person behind the
wheels.’
Perhaps in the only existing
rule of its kind in the world, if
the vehicle you are driving happens to kill a cow the penalty
automatically is for ten years,
and horrifically is a lot less for
killing a human being. This
insinuates how value of life is
regarded here and which probably explains the recklessness in
a person, exhibited the most by

for ignoring the lane discipline.
And their notoriety for stopping
wherever they want is a woe
shared by many of us. As for the
young lads driving, laying their
hands on the steering wheel is
more like playing a game putting the hapless passengers’
lives at risk. Driving a load of
commuters packed like sardines
at a death defying speed and
then braking at just nanoseconds away from hitting another
vehicle is pure thrill to them. It
is a thought to ponder whether
these young chaps really think
the passengers to be sardines
and not human beings. On that
point - these young lads definitely know the meaning of the
word ‘nanoseconds’ except for
the part when their brakes fail.
While these maniacal machines
are a danger to deal with, on the
other hand there are the bikers.
They are a magnificent breed.
The tiniest of spaces in between
vehicles are tempting grounds
for people on two wheels. They
seem happiest if they push their
vehicles into the tiniet of spaces to gain a couple of feet, all
the while risking scraping and
scratching any car on the sides.
And most of the time they scoot
off right under the watchful eye
of the blue uniformed cops. On
the streets of Kathmandu drivers are happy enough to ignore
traffic rules and act on their
own terms. Most people don’t
fear the traffic law because they
know they can get away with
minimal fines. As Dr. Arun says,
’People break rules and there is
no accountability for it probably
because somewhere there is a
lack of enforcement of rules.
Moreover the fines imposed are
too less and the traffic offenders
get away too easily. Perhaps if
the fine amount is a heavy one
they would think twice before
knowingly breaking a law.’ In
Nepal traffic police are allowed
to fine the offenders a very small
amount, to the tune of Rs. 25200, a sum these lawbreakers
can easily pay or get away with
by bribing.
But there is the other side of
the coin as Dr. Arun opines, ‘I
feel lack of infrastructure plays
a major role in the way people
drive. There is a limitation to
space for sure. Most of the roads
haven’t been expanded and extended and/or is in bad condition
to meet the demands of the ever
increasing number of vehicles.
The reckless streak in drivers
arise when they are unable to
reach their destination within a
stipulated time and become aggravated to the extent of being
irrational. Perhaps if the roads
were wider to accommodate the
ever growing number of vehicles, and traffic rules were implemented firmly, traffic in the valley will be more hassle free.’
Overall traffic in Kathmandu
is chaotic and very poor traffic sense does prevail but who
is to be blamed can be a question we can ask ourselves. Life
is all about perspectives and we
end up playing the blame game.
Whatever the blame perspective, road safety is a pertinent
issue that people fail to address.
While the veracity of such situations surface, little or nothing
is done to discourage it. It is
time for the valley denizens to
take this as a wakeup call. But
on a positive note, one thing we
all license holders will agree to
is that if you can drive on the
roads of Kathmandu, you sure
become trained to explore the
roughest of traffic systems in
the world. !

Where’s
the Freedom?

ne more journalist was
threatened about two
weeks ago. J. Pandey
who reports for Kantipur
from Nepalgunj received telephone calls warning him that
he could be killed. His ‘crime’:
Doing what he is trained to do
– report.
Early this month, the same
group that had threatened Pandey issued a statement accusing
Nepalgunj journalists of misreporting repeatedly, and warning
them that their “heads could be
slit” if they did not change. The
Terai Janatantrik Party Madhesh – one of over 110 armed
groups that have appeared in
the country after 2006 – had
made the threat.
Nepal has most of the necessary press freedom laws on paper. Yet it also still remains one
of the most dangerous countries for journalists. It’s because
the same advocates of citizens’
rights – political parties and
even the armed groups, who
claim to champion the cause of
the people – have been unable
to tolerate anything other than
what they believe is right.
The recklessness of politicians (who tell us they stand for
rule of law) after Janaandolan
II has given rise to lawlessness
that has amplified over time owing to the failure of successive
governments to ensure minimum public security. For example, we routinely hear of
such threats but only rarely
do we hear of police actually tracking down those
responsible. (Arresting the
killers of journalists – and
also others for that matter –
and bringing them to justice has
been rarer.)
Pandey and other journalists
were accused of writing “baseless and wrong” reports. After
his story had been printed, the
newspaper had even published a
refutation based on the group’s
claims. Nepal has other redress
mechanisms for such violations
– howsoever inadequate they
may be. But these options are
rarely used mainly because the
violent groups are now becoming more confident that they can
get away with anything because
of poor law enforcement.
The 10-year-long Maoist
insurgency and the brief royal
rule from February 2005 to
April 2006 were said to be the
worst periods for Nepali journalists. But data maintained by
the Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) show that post2006 Nepal has not been much
different.

gana, Chin Bahadur Buda). Birendra Sah was killed in 2007
the same year Prakash Thakuri
disappeared (now presumed
dead because there has been no
word on his whereabouts). Jagat
Prasad Joshi was killed in 2008
and Uma Singh in 2009.
Two media entrepreneurs
were killed in 2010. Jamim Shah
was gunned down in Kathmandu
on 7 February 2010 and Arun
Shinganiya, who ran Janakpur
Today and a radio, was shot and
killed on March 1. Further, FNJ
data up to 29 June suggest that
at least a dozen journalists have
been attacked and over 20 have
been threatened in one way or
another.
Some of the those responsible
are listed by FNJ as “unidentified” but for a large number of
cases it does name them – the
Unified Communist Party of
Nepal (Maoist), Nepal Police and
different post-2006 armed outfits
operating the plains (Terai/Madhesh) and identity groups active
in the eastern Hill districts.
A week before Pandey was
threatened, on 30 June 2010 a
group of 6-7 abducted Keshav
Bohara, a radio journalist, from
Tiram, Pyuthan. He had been
receiving threats after he had
done a story on land belonging
to the Swargadwari Temple that
the Maoists had “captured”. Bohara was released on July 1 after
32 hours in captivity.
After his release Bohara
said he remembered that a vehicle with registration numbers beginning with “00” was
on the roadside, and a woman
had stepped out and asked him
to step into the vehicle at gunpoint. Once inside, the abductors tied his hands and blindfolded him. There were five
other males inside. He added
that those in the vehicle had
identified themselves as Maoists and – on the road – they
had talked among themselves
about their exploits during the
insurgency.
An FNJ team investigating
the incident had met Krishna
Adhikari (Prakash) in Pyuthan but he denied the
party’s involvement. He
said there was no reason
to abduct Bohara as the
story on the land capture was not “new”
and that the
party
had
asked farmers to use
it
(suggesting
this was not reason
enough for abduction).
The FNJ report called
for further investigations
into the case. Over time we
may know if the police actually
think there is more to the story
and investigate. !

Bridging
The Cultural Divide

ome wedding season,
and I am relegated to
the ritual of sifting
through the piles of invitations. Some of these blessed
unions ‘stood out’ since they
pronounced wedded bliss for individuals belonging to two different ‘castes’, something that is
a rarity in our society but definitely on the rise. In the past,
occurrences of violence against
couples madly in love, belonging to different castes, wanting
to ‘tie the knot’ were commonplace – they were declared outcasts, tortured and sometimes
even violently attacked. As preposterous as it sounds, a mere
surname can change a family’s
attitude towards one’s daughter
or a son. A mere surname. As primeval as it is, sadly, at some level
it still holds true in our society.
If that sounds depressing,
here’s the good news. Times are
a changing and so are perceptions. In today’s context when we
proudly announce ourselves as
part of the global community we
cannot get ourselves isolated by issues of caste, creed, or class. Falling in love and deciding to spend
a lifetime with one another is not
just about having mushy feelings,
it’s the meeting of two minds, two
souls, two individual who look beyond the narrow social bindings
and connect. We are seeing more
of that change happening in the
Nepali community. Recently there
was one high profile marriage that
made the news circuit buzz.
Parash and Megha
They met when they were school
kids and say that they never real-
ly proposed one another, but on
8 July, 2010, Parash Shakya and
Megha Chaudhary got married
amidst their loving friends and
family. I meet the newly-weds
not even a week after their union
and can clearly see the sparkle in
their eye. I ask them how it feels
being married. “She is around,
so I have to give a good answer
right?” jokes Parash and goes
on to say, “At times I feel like I
am dreaming. To have someone
you love around all the time is
an amazing feeling.” Surely, he is
smitten. The wedding that took
place at the Agrawal Sewa Kendra was a private affair attended
by close family and friends and

or not,” shares Parash. “There
were no second thoughts for us,
we knew we weren’t committing
a crime and hence decided to
fight for what we felt was right,”
he continues. It was a union
that seemed impossible to consumate, yet they stood by one
another and in Megha’s words
“fought for the right thing.”
The acceptance
Their journey took a lot of
convincing, and at times was a
roller coaster ride of trials and
tribulations. Megha is the only
daughter amongst five brothers in the Chaudhary household.

In my quest I was immensely
disappointed, as people gave
me vague and unconvincing answers. Some said it’s a religious
thing while others simply didn’t
know why. So I went to a source
I have trusted since birth – my
mother. She said, “It is not so
much about the caste, it’s more
about a family’s concern for
one’s daughter. It is only natural to want her life to be as comfortable as you have provided for
her. With the issue of stepping
into a family with an alien culture, adjustment and fitting-in
becomes twice as hard.” Motherly wisdom gave me plenty
food for thought.

Chaudhary speaks my mother’s
tone. He says “I was initially
very upset and not prepared
for this. My concern as a father, as with any father, was
with her happiness. Megha has
had a very comfortable life and
the first thing that crossed my
mind was whether she would
be able to adjust to a totally different custom and tradition. So

Megha shares with a smile, “The
wedding was more than what we
had imagined it would be.”
Apart from their marriage
we have had other high profile
marriages around the city this
past wedding season which
were probably kept hush-hush
for the fear of ‘what the society
would say’. But looking past all
this, Megha and Parash’s marriage has undoubtedly broken
boundaries and opened doors for
many couples who have decided
to spend their lives together irrespective of what background
they come from. “The fact that
we came from different communities did not matter. What mat-

It was not easy for Megha as she
had to convince her family to get
married to the man of her choice
who belonged to a completely
different community. “The first
thing that crossed my mind was
that it will be a big NO from everyone,” shares Megha, “But we
knew that both of us had to be
strong and be prepared for the
worst.”
Yes the family objects (as
expected) but my question was
ground of the boy, this was what
had me worried.” Megha’s persistence paid off. With time he
accepted his daughter’s wishes
and made other members of the
family understand the situation.
“Parash is a wonderful boy and
I am sure he will prove himself.
He is capable of great things in
the future.” Strong words from
a supportive father-in-law.
But of course there is the
societal pressure. “There were
people who told me to get them
married outside Nepal, in a private ceremony, but I felt that
would be completely wrong. I
was convinced I was not committing a crime by giving my
daughter her happiness,” says
Chaudhary. Ultimately a parent’s decision lies where their
children’s happiness lies.
The adjustment
With all said and done my
mother’s words echoed in my
head. The hardest part is the
adjustment. How does one fit
in with the new way of doing
things? As trivial and insignificant as it may sound, adjusting
to a new home and to a different culture is like being born
altogether. You need to learn to
do many things differently. Now
combine this with the fact that
you have just stepped into a culture that you are not familiar to.
How does one do it? How does
one adjust and how does one
stand up for one’s love without
hurting your family in the process? To this Megha says, “The
thing is, for the girl you don’t
just get married to the boy, you
get married to the whole family.
So before you get married, you
have to be sure about his family’s reaction and whether they
would accept you or not. And
you have to be hundred percent
sure of your relationship with
your man.”
Giving the Courage
Megha and Parash have known
each other for 15 years. At some
level their marriage will give
courage to other people in a
similar situation. After all, it is
not about breaking traditions.
At a time when the whole nation
is divided, it might be the only
thing that would serve to bring
our diverse traditions together.
As I end the conversation I
ask them about their plans for
honeymoon. “She can’t decide
on one place,” Parash answers.
“I am a Libran, so I am looking
for the perfect destination,” says
Megha. “There is no such thing
as a perfect destination,” Parash
says, as he looks at his wife and
smiles matter-of-factly. They
are your typical married couple
and I don’t think their surname
plays a big difference in their
happiness, does it? Be happily
married, forever. !

or me summer brings
great amounts of happiness because the climate
exudes a sense of freedom
and encourages outdoor ventures more than any other season
in the year. Indulging in outdoor
activities like swimming, camping, and frequent eating out has
it’s pitfalls however. Pathogens
like germs and small microorganisms love summer as well since
the temperature is ideal for them
to multiply and grow. It is not in
our power to change nature. The
alternative then is to understand
nature better and be prepared
with preventive measures.

Sunburns
Sunburn is caused by the adverse
effect of the ultra violet rays on
exposed skin. Extreme burn can
cause affected areas to wrinkle
and may also result in painful reddening. It is best avoided by using
proper sunscreen cream with adequate UVA protection. The effects of sunburn start settling in
after a few hours of exposure to
the sun; it stays like that for couple
of days then gradually fades away
after a week or so. Of course there
are grades of burns and the seri-
ous burns might need consulting
a dermatologist. In case of painful
blisters it is wise not to break them
forcibly. For pain paracetamol or
ibuprofen can come in handy.
Dehydration and Heat stroke
Depletion of body water is dehydration. Heat stroke and dehydration are two sides of the same
coin. The cycle of dehydration
and heatstroke is best understood
as follows – dehydration causes
the body to run out of body
fluid; the cooling mechanism of
the human body fails to manage
the external rise in temperature;
the body temperature keeps rising giving rise to the dangerous
condition called heat stroke. The
ratio of drinking and working
outdoor during summer has to
be adjusted or calibrated. You
have to drink plenty and make
sure you are not running out of
fluid in your body. If heatstroke
does occur treat it as an emergency medical situation.
Food and water borne illnesses
Due to the typical summer temperature and weather conditions,
food and water contamination
are common. Germs multiply
aggressively in summer than in
any other season. Some rules for
summer food protection are simple - clean, cover, cook, cool or
chill. Always have food and hands
cleaned before eating. Health issues related with food and water
are diarrhea, vomiting, nausea,
fever, indigestion, bloated belly
and other unpleasant conditions.
If any of the above occur it is
highly recommended that you
see a certified medical practitioner. Neglecting them may lead
to serious medical situations.
Mosquito Bites
Mosquito bites are common in
the southern plains of Nepal
and in some inner hilly regions
as well. Mosquitos are rarely
found at higher altitudes. A
mosquito bite results in red
small itchy and burning bumps
on the skin. Usage of mosquito
repellent lotions/liquids and usage of medicated net like perma-net is highly recommended.
If travel to malaria-prone areas
of the Terai becomes necessary,
prophylaxis dosages of drugs
like Malarone should be taken.
An advisable regimen of the
same has to be consulted with a
physician. !

the story portrays a phase of conflict in nepali society.
this play depicts the struggles of an individual in the search for individual and social
identity. science is synonymous with facts, but the search for truth can be expressed
by art and literature as well. imagination is also a form of reality. this play revolves
around the same debate. and, inside this, there is the search of a woman for respect
and self identity, questions of social harmony, and also issues of establishment of
political freedom. most importantly this play tries to raise awareness about violence
in politics. in that sense, this play is a peaceful revolt against violence.

of suffering? Fr!day talks to C.K. Lal on his maiden venture into
performing arts.
how have you, through this play, raised voice against political
violence in this country? Do you see it ending anytime soon?
the play attempts to portray unintended consequences of violence
in politics. it also seeks to show that the maelstrom of violence often
claims innocents and morality is the first victim of armed conflicts.
the message is implicit. the testimony of the protagonist is a form
of peaceful rebellion against the culture of violence. the important
question is not when it is going to end but whether we can afford to be
indifferent.
Could the identity crisis faced by one character be a
generalization for all nepalis?
all crises test the identity of people caught in their web. the question
of identity of the protagonist in this play is a representation of that
phenomenon, not a generalization.
Would you say your previous attempts at raising awareness
through writing have failed and that is the reason you have
transgressed into theatre?
like other arts, writing works in invisible ways. its messages are not
scientific prescriptions. it is impossible to decide whether a piece of
writing has succeeded or failed as long as it is agreed that it has some
function in a literate society. this play complements other writings
rather than reject any of them. what appears to be transgression
is merely continuity. that said, a play is primarily the medium of the
director. sunil pokharel has done a wonderful job with sapana ko sabiti.
nisha sharma pokharel, dr. sanjeev uprety and other actors have
brought characters they play, alive. that certainly makes the meaning of
the play clearer and prospects of its reception higher. (ayusha nirola)

s a precursor to the international tattoo convention event, a
national tattoo convention is being held in Kathmandu, with
tattoo artists from all over the country participating. The
national convention will include more than thirty tattoo artists and studios from all over Nepal. This is the first time there will
be a national showcasing of Nepali artists and different tattoo art
forms in Nepal.
The tattoo convention is open for any tattoo artist who registers
by paying the convention fee. Stalls will be provided for all participants. All participants have to abide to strict criteria for hygiene and
safety. The event will also be open for the public throughout the day,
subject to a minimal door charge. There will be stalls for food and
drink and in the evening, local bands will be featured.
The purpose of this event is threefold; to create the groundwork
for the preparation of the first international convention to be held
in Nepal during Nepal Tourism Year 2011, create a space for local
artists to meet and interact, and finally to spread awareness among
local artists about international safety and hygiene standards.
The first International Tattoo Convention in Nepal will be held
on 22nd, 23rd and 24th of April 2011. The international convention
will include more than a hundred tattoo artists from the international tattoo community. Activities will include competitions, showcasing of different tattoo art forms and cultural events. Nepal International Tattoo Convention has been recognized and promoted by
Nepal Tourism Board as one of the highlighted events for the Nepal
Tourism Year 2011.
The International Tattoo Convention in Nepal is being organised
in partnership with Mohan’s Tattoo Inn and Bijay Shrestha. Mohan
Gurung is an internationally acknowledged tattoo artist based in
Thamel, Kathmandu. Mohan’s passion for tattooing and enhancing
the art form in Nepal is the driving force behind the initiative for the
first international tattoo convention in Nepal.

how can multimedia journalism make news reporting less
biased?
i’m not sure it can. it is still completely based on the journalist. but one
can argue that it is a multi-platform media where the audience is viewing
a certain story in multiple ways which does not make it one-sided.
people in a certain news report are also speaking for themselves and, on
video, the audience can see what the situation really is.
multimedia journalism has limited reach, considering limited
technological advances in the developing world.Your take on
that?
i don’t believe it at all. i have travelled across africa and asia and
they do have the internet and they are not lagging behind in terms of
infrastructure. it may be slower or less accessible but there are no big
problems at all. nepal is one of the poorest countries in the world, and
if nepal can do it, any country can. multimedia journalism would be
accessible in urban areas only, but that is where the rest of the media is

people’. “i started writing this novel
when i was sixteen,” says pradeep.
he started incorporating his biggest

There is so much more to fashion than just glamorous models in beautiful clothes. Be
it Cecil Beaton choosing Jackson Pollock paintings as backdrop for his American Vogue
fashion shoot in 1951, or the 2008 public underwater fashion shoot for Cosmopolitan in
Sydney, every shoot has immense thought and effort put into it to make it captivating.
So how do you put a fashion shoot together? Firstly, there is always a team of the following: Fashion Stylist, Hair Stylist, Make-Up Artist, Model, Lights person, Photographer and
his Assistant. The photographer briefs the stylist before the shoot about the requirements.
This briefing is a think tank session that is intended to garner a “Theme” or “Story” that
will be the thread running through the whole shoot. It is like writing a storyboard. The
stylist chooses the clothing, shoes and accessories as per the needs of the photo shoot.
All “Good” fashion stories start with a theme that helps determine the flow of the
photo shoot. All members of the photo shoot team have to strictly work in accordance to
the theme, and not their personal preferences.

An expression of one’s identity, tattoos have been an age old method of communicating freedom or captivity. In
itself it involves a range of designs and texts to relate the self to a larger concept, connecting and labeling the body,
to speak out loud. As highly visual creatures we tend to find ways to decorate ourselves in countless ways.
If you are thinking of getting a tattoo, the first thing a tattoo artist will tell you is to think it through. It is going to be on you for the rest of your life. If it is a result of a drunken decision the night before, chances are you will
heavily regret it. But for the fortunate ones who plan it, tattoos become a symbol of love, tribute for the ones we
have lost and a statement of who we are. Tattoos hold meanings - a first tattoo with your best friend, a commemoration of a deep inner pain, an imprint of your child’s name that resonates love - they are all expressions. Tattoos
may be etched on a tiny spot of unexposed skin, or may be designed to be a blatant exposé for the world to see. Once

CELTIC TATTOOS
Sure, Celtic tattoos are elaborate and beautiful but they are
steeped in a great historic
tradition. Celtic tattoo is a term
used to describe a wide range of
different elements. The first are
Celtic knot tattoos. A knot with
no beginning or end symbolizes
the never ending cycle of death
and rebirth. The second design
element is Zoomorphic tattoo
designs; animals body parts, usually the heads of the animals.
DRAGON TATTOOS
The dragon is a “classic” tattoo motif, popular with both men
and women. In the Far East, the dragon represents the Four Elements - Earth, Wind, Fire and Water - and the four points of the
compass - East, West, North and South. Dragons are simultaneously a symbol of Water, Earth, Underworld and Sky. The dragon
is a culturally far-ranging character whose apparent bad temper
should be interpreted as simply amoral, neither good nor evil.

Shree Teen Maharaj Dhir Shumsher Jung Bahadur Rana is the equestrian in the above
statue. This statue was established in the year 1894 A.D and was designed and ordered
from Britain by his son Shree Teen Bir Shumsher as a token of remembrance of his father
who was the youngest brother of Jung Bahadur Rana.
The next time you zoom by the busy roads
around Tundikhel, pause and observe the
story behind the statues of seven of the Rana
Prime Ministers placed inside Tundikhel.
These magnificent equestrian statues
were built and sailed in all the way from
Britain. Every statue has its own unique
tale to tell. Made to commemorate the lives
and accomplishments of different Prime
Ministers they are greyish-black equestrian statues with a brick base with carved
illustrations recording their achievements.
All are wearing their ‘jungi poshak’ (ceremonial dress), carrying their swords, riding their horses and are wearing the national crown (Shree pech).
Since they were made in Europe, the seven Ranas statuettes have a unique western
touch. At present very little is being done to
protect these unique representations of Nepali history. These statues bear the scars of
time and vandalization by people. Although
existing Rana family members have put in
little effort, clearly without government support their conservation is impossible.

Juddha Shumsher was inspired to order a similar equestrian
from Britain on the lines of Jung Bahadur Rana’s statue. His
statuette focuses more on the brick base that lists all the
important events of his time. All four sides of the base are
covered with records of all his achievements and social
undertakings for the country. A lot of emphasis has been
put on his reform activities which he undertook after the
dreadful earthquake of the 80s.

The equestrian of Rana Uddip Singh Bahadur Rana depicts
him in the Indian mutiny of 1857 A.D. In this statue one can
see broken cannon pieces, wagon wheels and cannon balls,
representative of the arms and ammunition used during the
mutiny, and Rana Uddip’s role in the same. This statue was
inaugurated, designed and ordered from Britain by Rana
Uddip Singh himself.
According to Mr. Purshottam Jung Bahadur Rana,
the two statues of Shree Teen Bhim Shumsher
Jung Bahadur Rana and Shree Teen Dev Shumsher
Jung Bahadur Rana were designed and ordered
from Britain by Juddha Shumsher. However as the
story goes, Juddha Shumsher was upset with Dev
Shumsher for he had made Juddha Shumsher carry
an umbrella over him and he disliked Bhim Shumsher for he always reprimanded Juddha Shumsher
in front of everyone. Due to these reasons when
the statues of Bhim and Dev Shumsher arrived,
irate Juddha Shumsher ordered them to be placed
nowhere in Tundikhel but in front of the zoo
which had been recently made.

insured his equestrian which
paid for the remake of the

The above equestrian statue is that of Shree Teen Maharaj Prithivi
Bir Bikram Shah Dev. His statue was designed and ordered from
Britain by Shree Teen Chandra Shumsher along with that of Bir
Shumsher. The serene looking Prithivi Bir Bikram riding the horse
is reflective of the simplicity and peacefulness in him. The statue
saw the light of day on 2nd Fagun 1986 B.S and was inaugurated
by Shree Panch Maharaj Dhiraj Tribhuvan Bir Bikram Shah.

the fundamental
characteristics of
Paubha Art?
Paubha Art in Nepal dates back
to the 6th Century – in its Nepali form, the Tibetan Thangka
is known as the Paubha. Essentially, this artistic tradition celebrates and gives artistic form to
Vajrayana Buddhist Philosophy
whereby it becomes an act and
tradition of worship (Puja), and
meditation (Dhyana). Paubha
art was developed and conceived
as an artistic convention which
uses natural materials and techniques with colors for the paintings ground out of stone, flower
and vegetables.
What historic
elements are key to
your art and to the
artistic subjects?
I think Buddhist Philosophy is the most
important facet of
Paubha art – it constantly reinvents the
meanings and the axioms, encased within
Buddhist
spirituality, in pictorial form.
The beauty of an entire cultural norm is
brought out by blending the aesthetic with
the spiritual. One can
find a 17th century
Paubha painting in
Bhaktapur – this art

In the 11th Century, Paubha art was further improved,
alongside the development of
the Vajrayana School, which
continued till the 13th century.
Significantly, when the persecution of Buddhists and Buddhist

form saw textual augmentations
with the focus shifting from
landscapes to intricate patterns
and depictions of prominent
figures in the Vajrayana pantheon. The use of natural pigments
began to define the art form
with themes garnered from old
spiritual texts and techniques
enhanced with reproductions.
The canvas for much of
Paubha art is made with cotton
washed in hot water and dried
on a stretcher with layers of
oxide and glue. Pigments are
obtained by crushing the stones
to produce the paints. For exam-

to family livelihoods
and skills, with each
successive generation
passing on the convention to the next.

Paubha Art is on the

The artistic, historical
and spiritual values
of Paubha art have
ensured its continued

a collectible and holds immense
beauty for the discerning eye.
How has your artistic
techniques and work evolved
through the tradition of
Paubha?
I have been engaged in Paubha Art
since I was eleven years old. I am
more detail-oriented now. I have
good knowledge and skill in its ar-
tistic properties such as character
and proportion. I have found a balance of sorts in my own technique.
It is a valuable art form which must
be preserved. In order to work on
the Paubha, study on deism and religion alongside continual practice
are crucial. My own knowledge of
Buddhism has also been refined
through the patient guidance of
Lamas and Rimpoches. !

wines get better with age.
How do you define gentlemen?
Someone with the qualities of

they get older they become more
subtle. For instance when men are
young, aggressiveness is a common characteristic and it makes
them rude, energetic, youthful and
refreshing, all at once. Same with
wine. The acidity in wine makes
it survive the young age from oxidation, and drinking young wine
is always refreshing compared to
old. Drinking young Chardonnay
or Riesling is a great adventure
for the palate as it gives the tantalizing effect. Have you ever had
Champagne without bubbles - it is
boring. Acidity represents the bubbly character and lifts the flavors in
wine giving a sharpness which is
detected at the edges of the
tongue in most people.
Tannin is the bitter astringent
commonly found in coffee and tea.
In fact when first you drink green
tea, coffee or even beer, the bitterness is not pleasant but in the long
run the bitter after-taste plays a
big role in enhancing taste. Compare the same to the outspoken
personality of men who have been
through the roller coaster of life,
through thick and thin, and have
matured. The tannins are basically
derived from pips, skin and stalk
of wine and are the major factors
to make the wine survive longer
in the bottle. It lends the much
needed vitality and acts as natural
preservatives for wine. Like tannin, bitterness of life teaches men
to be better people.
Diligence is a great attribute in
men getting them respect and
building reputation. Similarly alcohol plays an important role in
wine. Alcohol is also the soul of
wine. Remember, to have good

as they provide the smoothing
character in them. The reason

ace To Promote alternative energy
a
ce Development Bank’s initiative to promote alternative energy in the country is well on its way with a target to install
5,000 solar home systems (SHS) in the rural households of
Nepal through credit financing. The aim is to provide the
rural populace access to alternative energy for electrification, as an
alternative to conventional electricity, which will ultimately help in
upgrading their living standards.
Ace Development Bank has joined hands with Frankfurt School
of Finance and Management’s UNEP collaborating Center for Sustainable Energy and Climate Finance for the venture. Winrock International is the lead consultant for the project.
The total project is estimated to cost $ 1.8 million. Frankfurt
School of Finance and Management will be providing funds to identify local financial institutions and provide capacity building and
monitoring activities.
The capacity building activities will support the improvement
in governance and financial practices, develop marketing of SHS
and assist in preparing business plans. The project is expected to be
completed on December 31, 2012.
According to estimates around 40,000 to 60,000 households are
shifting to alternative energy every year and around 200,000 houses
have already installed solar home systems (SHS). Only 9% of people
are using solar energy and micro hydro power till date.

how far do you think ace’s efforts will help promote the use
of alternative energy amongst the rural populace?
most households in nepal do not have access to grid connected
electricity; renewable energy sources such shs (and micro hydro)
are available alternatives with government subsidy to provide clean
and sustainable household lighting in off-grid rural areas. commercial/
development banks such as ace perceive tremendous potential in
tapping the rural ret market, but are not confident about the mfi
creditworthiness, remoteness and accessibility of the rural areas,
operational cost of banks etc. ace is encouraged by the piloting of
shs financing in six rural districts under the technical leadership
of winrock international in 2009. therefore it is the intension of
ace to develop rural energy micro finance services through partner
organizations for shs in rural nepal.
What capacity building, governance and finance practices
according to you would help promote the renewable energy
sector in nepal?
ace development bank along with winrock international and the
frankfurt school of management under united nations environment
program (unep)-climate finance innovation facility (cfif) and along
with aepc and esap are working together in areas that they are
respectively proficient in. it is by working together with the various
players that we will be able to tap into each other’s potential areas of
expertise and be able to deliver. moreover, ace will initiate a system
for a national mfi-rating modality by developing appropriate criteria
in collaboration with banks, mfis and other stakeholders.

arbonn Mobile of India launched three new handsets in Nepal. The company announced Allied Trade Link International as its authorized distributors in the country. The Indian
made handsets are available are priced from Rs. 2,999 to Rs.
8,999. The sets that were launched were the K1212, a touch screen model with a 3.2 inch screen, a 3 megapixel camera, dual SIM slot, expandable memory up to 8 GB and
comes with a one year warranty,
the K30, with a changeable panel option, a 2 megapixel camera,
qwerty keypad, and expandable memory up to 8 GB. The phone
comes with a one year warranty,
and the KC 450 which features dual CDMA, expandable memory
upto 2 GB, a 0.3 megapixel camera, MP3, FM player, loudspeaker,
calendar and alarm.
Karbonn mobiles which is the market for just about a year, already commands 6 percent share of the mobile market in India and
hopes Nepal would be a strong partner for the company in the days
to come. Apart from India and Nepal, the company has operations in
