developing the ‘Tourisme & Handicap’ quality
label and the Cerdagne-Capcir area now offers
persons with motor, visual, hearing and mental
disabilities:

These label-awarded offers are complemented by
special leisure-sport installations and facilities, such
as gondola lifts and the shuttle at the Les Angles

ying at an altitude of between 1,500 m and
2,700 m, the Neiges Catalanes ski area
extends from the Haut-Conflent to the Cerdagne
and Capcir regions and includes 7 separate areas.
The diversity of this ski area is truly impressive:
more than 180 km of downhill skiing, 100 ski lifts,
1,250 snow cannons, 450 km of Nordic skiing,
340 ski instructors, 14 ski schools and more than
250 km of snowshoe trails. The ‘Neiges Catalanes’

The Cambre d’Aze area gathers
together two ski resorts sharing the
same massif: Eyne and Saint-Pierredels-Forcats. Created in 1999, this vast
ski area is dominated by the majestic
Cambre d’Aze cirque. The first ski area
one discovers upon reaching the high
mountain plateaux, the Cambre d’Aze
area is nestled within an immense
forest of mountain pines. Skiers can
take advantage of 21 different pistes
(totalling 35 km) for all ability levels.
The ski area is famous for its ‘Coulée
de Fontfrède’, an extraordinary slope
that attracts powder fans, and its
legendary Les Pioches, an old-style
rag lift that carries two skiers at a
time! Conviviality and authenticity are
the key words of the Cambre d’Aze
area, where Pyrenean village life has
not only been preserved but continues
to thrive, thanks to the arrival of new
artisans, shopkeepers and farmers.

Les Angles
With its jagged peaks and rugged
geography, this high massif is the Alps
of the Pyrenees. The ‘La Mine’ chairlift
and the ‘Le Grand Fontfrède’ drag lift
rise to an altitude of 2,500 m, making
this resort the highest of the Neiges
Catalanes network. From the pleasant
snow front to the wilder La Mine area,

The ‘Les Angles Ski Card’ is a microchip card

adventure guaranteed
n attraction that is unique in Europe! At Thuès, you can try your
hand at canyoning in naturally warm water at over 40°C. Equipped
with a neoprene wetsuit, a harness and a helmet, you can jump,
swim through pools, slip down slides and abseil down drops of up to 40
metres. The atmosphere is decidedly colder at the Balcère lake, where
you can dive beneath the ice… at 2°C. Here you will have to learn to
breathe, control your body and exceed your limits to enjoy an unimagined
underwater world. Equally spectacular, ice climbing will delight lovers of
verticality and technical challenges, ice axe in hand and crampons on the
feet. Mountaineering is also an option, with an introductory session in a
300-metre snow corridor offering a preview of the summits.

kitesurfing, you’re halfway there – glide at full speed across the snow,
on a board or skis, pulled by a sail. Peak speeds can exceed 70 km/h!
And if you want to go still further and leave your skis behind, seize the
dream of Icarus and fly with the paragliding school in Targasonne. If you
want to add excitement to the contemplation and pleasure, you can try
some aerobatics such as wingovers and spiral descents. Another option
is an introduction to gliding at the La Llagonne centre, where you can
master altitude, ridge lift, thermals and lee waves. And if all of that is still
not thrilling enough, get your kicks from skydiving, freefalling in tandem
up to 5000 metres in a breathtaking mountain setting, with souvenir
photos and videos.

ig air, step-up, half-pipe, rails, boxes, boarder cross, etc. With a dozen
snowparks in Cerdagne and Capcir, boarders are spoilt for choice for places
to try their jumps, turns and sequences of tricks in total freedom and safety.
And if you want to return to the wild spirit of freeriding, find yourself a woodpark,
a space laid out through the trees by the plentiful natural snow, like in Formiguères,
with its routes of varying difficulty levels through the forest.

What’s that?
Y
ou could even call them USOs, unidentified snow objects. These
strange creations, easier than skiing and much more fun than
sledging, have been appearing on the pistes since the 2000s.
The most spectacular is the snowscoot, a scooter inspired by BMX and
mountain biking, and the most surprising is the yooner, a modern sledge
inspired by the ‘paret’, an older form that was used by schoolchildren.
This snowcart 15 cm from the ground is a guaranteed thrill! Even
more fun can be had with the air board, a bobsleigh-style inflatable
that is ridden lying flat, head-first, with only your own weight to steer
with. Quite simply hair-raising! A slightly less hardcore variant is the
snowtube, a rubber ring with handles rather like a truck inner tube which
can turn, skid and slide from curve to curve. Hardier visitors can opt for
cross-country skiing, climbing using ski skins like the peoples of the north
and returning via a well-deserved descent.
F
eel like breaking through the ice? Set off for the mountain lakes of
the eastern Pyrenees. Matemale, Balcère… Hemmed in by snow and
ice, the lakes hide a secret life beneath their immaculate whiteness.
A life of undulations and transparency. A life that you can discover by
diving beneath the ice. Closely supervised, this extraordinary activity is
an original way of passing through the looking glass. For twenty to forty
minutes, depending on the club, a world of silence is revealed in all its
intimacy. Solidly linked to the surface by a guide rope, beginners and
experienced divers plunge into an uncanny world where the sun’s rays
penetrate the dark and where air bubbles caress the ice and pry into
every fissure. A unique and exclusive experience. The shivers!

100% French invention by a local man, Hugues Escarguel from Carcassonne.
Fun and accessible, the QBX Quadbike is ridden like a buggy (but is much
greener, as it has no engine!) and is perfect for downhills, obstacles and skids – all
under control.

The Catalan Pyrenees Regional Natural Park
A territory rich in diversity
C
reated on the initiative of the Languedoc-Roussillon region in 2004,
the Catalan Pyrenees are the 43rd regional natural park in France.
With its strong Catalan mountain identity, the park offers the
diversity of three areas with different atmospheres: Haut-Conflent, Capcir
and Cerdagne. It includes 64 villages with 23,000 inhabitants. Crossed
from one side to the other by the Yellow Train, it is rich in culture and
history, including Romanesque and baroque churches and fortified citadels
such as Villefranche-de-Conflent and Mont-Louis, listed as UNESCO world
heritage. The park stretches over 139,000 hectares, offering wide open
spaces from 300 to 3,000 metres in altitude. The undoubted richness of
the area is its exceptional wildlife: the bearded vulture and the Pyrenean
chamois are the highlights, alongside the Pyrenean lily. In a park boasting
seven nature reserves, five protected natural sites and three Natura 2000
sites, the goal of the sustainable development project included in the
park’s charter is to protect natural spaces but also promote the region’s
economic development. The variety of landscapes enables a multitude of
outdoor activities in both winter and summer. Finally, the Catalan Pyrenees
regional natural park offers some fabulous products made throughout this
vast area: cheese, honey, jam, fruit juice, apples, potatoes, meat products
– all created with skills and expertise that are promoted and labelled with
the «PNR Pyrénées Catalanes» brand.

uisine is a question of tradition in this land of strong accents.
A cuisine with the rough flavours of biting winters, given all its
aroma by hardy men and women of strong character. On the
high plateaux of Cerdagne and Capcir, when the sun lights up the sky
but the cold still penetrates, people enjoy ollada, a rustic soup made
with cabbage and sagi (rancid bacon), and boles de Picolat, meatballs
flavoured with garlic and cinnamon. Hams take on their fullest flavours
in the drying rooms of several illustrious houses, while fuet and botifarra
sausages are allied with aperitifs. Everything is naturally washed down
with good Roussillon wines in all three colours, which are also the perfect
accompaniment to farm cheeses made with cow, ewe and goat milk from
the surrounding farms. Still very rural, this corner of the eastern Pyrenees has
protected its farmers, who are happy to open their doors for the pleasure of
sharing their love for their work, and who can be seen at the regular markets.

he hit new winter activity, especially appreciated by dads and boys, is laser
biathlon, which mixes cross-country skiing with rifle shooting – and plenty
of snow, orienteering, concentration and precision. This is a game where
children might be able to beat their parents! With snake gliss though, there is
no competition: everyone is in the same boat, or rather the same sledge train.
This collective sledge controlled by a guide hurtles down the pistes in single file,
everyone hanging on to each other. Giggles guaranteed! Some resorts even
offer the activity at night, by moonlight or head-torch. This is an option at Les
Angles and Terra Nordica, a 15,000 m2 playground dedicated to learning and
discovering nature for young trappers and great adventurers.

are welcome!
F
or ski addicts, the French Ski School (ESF) has created Club Piou-Piou, a
combined kindergarten and crèche. While the adults go off to perfect their
skills and enjoy themselves on the piste, the little ones (from 3 years) are
introduced gently and safely to the joys of the ski-lift and snow sport.
Smile, you’re on camera!
Y
ou no longer need to take your camera or your GoPro to bring back images
of your exploits. With the DC Live Park system, all snow fanatics have to do
is put a special sticker on their helmets. A microchip inside the sticker detects
their movements and triggers the snowpark’s cameras. Five minutes later, using the
sticker number, they can watch their runs on their smartphone and then edit them
into videos to share with their friends on the Internet. All free of charge. Test the
system exclusively at the Font-Romeu Pyrénées 2000 ski area.

to the Parc des Angles to meet the wildlife of the Pyrenees:
brown bears, wolves, boar, stags, roe deer, mountain sheep,
Pyrenean chamois, marmot, ibex, bison and reindeer. Fun and
educational. But let's not forget our friends on the farm… Many
farms offer visits with introductory workshops: breadmaking, butter,
farmyard animals, animal feeding, calves suckling, pony and
horseback rides and, to finish, farm refreshments (savoury or sweet)
made with local produce. And the parents can leave with a wellstocked hamper…

he construction of the line to reduce the isolation of the high
Catalan plateaux was a real engineering exploit and a unique
human adventure. Work began on the famous electric line linking
Villefranche-de-Conflent to Latour-de-Carol in 1903, and was completed
in 1927, after being interrupted by the war from 1914-18. The mountain
canary, symbolising the whole region, covers 63 km and crosses 650
structures, including 19 tunnels and two remarkable bridges, the Viaduc
Séjourné and the Pont Gisclard. The ‘Little’ Yellow Train, which is not
on the UNESCO world heritage list but is seeking admittance, is an
unmissable visit for holidaymakers. The open cars bring travellers closer
to the experience and allow them to breathe the pure air of Cerdagne
by the lungful!
