holds their fourth annual Spring festival
«Colmar Fête le Printemps».
A wonderful occasion to catch the first rays of sunshine in the enchanting atmosphere
of old Colmar! This is a longstanding event in Colmar life. For two weeks, hens and
chicks, ducks and sheep, and trout and carp come to town in a lovely bucolic setting.
Colorful flowerbeds decorate the town squares. See little houses decorated by Colmar
school children.
Two seasonal markets await you in Colmar’s emblematic squares, Place des Dominicains
and Place de l’Ancienne Douane. 70 exhibitors sell traditional Easter objects and
specialties. A whole range of Springtime products can be found.
Between the two markets, take a nice walk around, and discover the architectural
richness of the town. Stroll down little cobblestone streets, admire timber frame
homes, charming streams, quaint squares, and historical monuments. Colmar is full of
well-kept treasures that are sure to win your heart.
As you stroll along, you’ll enjoy all sorts of fun and musical events to celebrate the
return of Springtime: mini-farm, eagle show, egg hunt, barefoot path, boat rides,
horse-drawn carriage rides, little train, outdoor concerts, and more!

Thirteen swing jazz concerts and seven classical serenades will be held at Colmar’s
heritage sites, including Saint-Matthieu’s Church, Collégiale Saint-Martin, and the Salle
des Catherinettes, as well as at the Colmar media library auditorium. A great program,
with sensational performers, for a nice evening on the town.

markets expect you on its emblematic squares.
Exhibitors, installed in their small colourful small
shack, propose original and authentic products with
a focus on regional products in this spring season.
Plants, beauty products, jewellery, toys, tableware and ceramics
… as well as numerous delicious Alsatian specialities, fine wines,
March beers, charcuterie, cheeses and many other delights which
make your taste-buds go crazy! For this Easter weekend, you
cannot avoid the rabbits and the chocolate eggs as well as the
traditional Lamala (in Alsace means “Easter lamb” - a traditional
cake made in a lamb-shaped mould). Fun street events and craft
exhibitions are proposed throughout your whole stroll around the
city to celebrate the return of spring.

The Isenheim Altarpiece, sculpted and painted in the 16th century, is on
display at the Dominicains until April 2015. This is a very special event run by
Colmar’s Unterlinden Museum , which, along with the Isenheim Altarpiece, will
be displaying the complete works of Colmar painter Martin Schongauer kept in
the city, including the famous “Rosebush Virgin”. A single ticket admits visitors
to both the Unterlinden Museum and the Dominicains Church exhibitions.

of les Cuivres Français (a French brass ensemble), Nicolas André, son of Maurice and
soloist at the Pamplona Opera, Marc Ullrich (soloist at the Basil Symphony Orchestra),
and Philippe Hechler, professor at the Strasbourg Conservatory.
Listeners will delight to duets, trios and quartets accompanied by twenty strings players,
performing legendary compositions from both classical and modern repertories: the
prolific Georg Philipp Telemann, who weaves amazing spectral moods; Antonio Vivaldi,
the Venetian master of charming melodies; Gottfried Heinrich Stölzel, a near contemporary of Vivaldi’s; Benedetto Marcello and Giuseppe Torelli, the precursors of the Concerto Grosso; and also Pyotr Tchaikovsky, said to be the “first truly Russian composer”.
The instrumental ensemble alone will perform one of the most spellbinding pieces of
the 20th century, which has been extraordinarily and rightfully popular with the general public for nearly half a century: the Adagio for Strings in B minor by the American
composer Samuel Barber.

AAfter winning first prize at London and Besancon
competitions, in 1978, Marc Soustrot was appointed
Artistic Director of the Orchestre National des Pays de
la Loire, then of the Brabant Orkest in Eindhoven, the
Netherlands. In 1995, he was appointed Musical Director of the city of Bonn and Chief Conductor of the
Beethovenhalle orchestra. Since 2011, he has conducted the Malmö Symfoniorkester, which will soon be
making several worldwide tours and concerts.
Marc Soustrot has conducted several world-class orchestras, such as the Tokyo Philharmonic, The Oslo
Philharmonic, the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra, the
Rotterdam Philharmonic, and the Munich Philharmonic. Marc Soustrot has also taken part in many opera
performances: La Fenice (Pelléas and Mélisande), Verona (La Traviata), Seville Maestranza (Die Walküre,
Lohengrin, Pelléas and Mélisande), Real Madrid (The
Damnation of Faust).
Marc Soustrot was recently decorated Chevalier de la
Légion d’Honneur» and «Officier des Arts and Lettres»
by the France.
Born in 1951 in Wissembourg, Philippe Hechler began playing trumpet at the Harmonie Municipale in
Soultz-sous-Forêts. At age 12, he was admitted to the
Strasbourg Conservatory in Lucien Schweickart’s class.
In 1968 he was unanimously awarded a First Prize for
trumpet.
After earning his baccalauréat, he continued studying
music and earned a teaching degree. He further developed his talents at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Paris, in Maurice Andre’s class and
earned the First Prize for trumpet in 1974.
Philippe Hechler is no tenured professor of trumpet
at the Strasbourg Region National Conservatory. He
also pursues an international career as a trumpeter,
playing as a soloist, in symphony orchestras and in
brass ensembles. He is very active in the Strasbourg
region, and has been the Artistic Director and solo trumpeter of the Ensemble Musical d’Rhinwagges since
its founding.
Guy Touvron
Thierry Caens
Guy Touvron is today an artist at the height of his maturity. He has recorded over seventy-five albums and
has earned three international grand prizes: Munich,
Geneva and Prague. In his brilliant career, he has performed 3,500 concerts. He has played with prestigious
orchestras such as La Scala in Milan, as well as with
many famous French ensembles (Orchestre National
de Lyon, Orchestre du Capitole de Toulouse), at some
of the world’s greatest concert halls (Berliner Philharmonie, Salle Pleyel, Royal Albert Hall, Konzertwerein,
Vienna), conducted by maestros such as Yehudi Menuhin, Jean-Claude Casadesus, Emmanuel Krivine and
Michel Plasson.
Thierry Caens was born in 1958 in Dijon. He studied
with his father, Marcel Caens and with Maurice André
at the CNSM in Paris. He was solo trumpeter at the
Orchestre de Lyon and cornet solo at the Paris Opera.
Thierry Caens is currently Musical Director of «Cuivres
Français». Moreover, He has been a trumpet professor
at the Dijon Conservatory since 1985, and at the Lyon
Conservatory since 2003. He plays for motion pictures
(original soundtrack for the film Cyrano de Bergerac)
and popular French singers (William Sheller) and also
likes to team up with musicians from very different
worlds (M. Colombier, J. Ferrat, Sting, B. Fontaine, N.
Freire, M. Plasson).
In April 2006, he released a CD entitled 3ème Souffle
(literally “Third Breath”), recorded with the Lyon National Orchestra (conducted by Michel Plasson) with
three works composed for him by W. Sheller, R. Galliano and M. Colombier.
In July 2011, he was decorated «Chevalier des Arts et
Lettres» by the French Minister of Culture.
Marc Ulrich
Born in 1954 in Mulhouse, Marc Ullrich started studying trumpet at the Mulhouse national Conservatory.
After spending two years in Maurice André’s class at
the Paris Conservatory, he became solo trumpeter at
the Orchestre Symphonique du Rhin, in his home town
of Mulhouse.
At that time, he also began studying ancient music and
Baroque trumpet. Since 1977, he has been solo trumpeter at the Basil Symphony Orchestra.

Of Breton origin but born oversees in Reunion, harmonica player Olivier Ker
Ourio was born and raised in a double or triple musical culture. He has played
alongside singer Danyel Waro, his island compatriot and with Marcel Azzola
(at Colmar fête le printemps 2013), as well as with big names in European jazz
(Didier Lockwood, André Ceccarelli, Emmanuel Bex) who all swear he is “Toots
Thielmans’s only real successor” The duet / duel he offers with pianist Manuel
Rocheman is a natural outshoot of his world music culture, especially as he
recorded a new work just a few months ago inspired by the warm sounds of
the Indian Ocean.
Promoted to “High Priest of the 88 keys” by no less than Martial Solal, whom
the American Jazz scene has loved for decades, Manuel Rocheman follows in the
footsteps of a long line of famous musical explorers, path breakers and crossover artists. His list of musical contributions over the last twenty years or so is too
long to mention but let’s cite at least a few names this eclectic artist has worked
with: Didier Lockwood, André Ceccarelli, Olivier Ker Oulio, Johnny Griffin, JeanLuc Ponty, Kyle Eastwood, and Michel Legrand, not to mention Charles Aznavour
and Brazilian musician Toninho Horta.

For vocal jazz lovers, this concert will be a revelation; for those who aren’t vocal
jazz fans yet, this is the show that will win them over. For every time Virginie
Teychené performs at a Jazz festival, be it Juan-les-Pins (where she first appeared
in 2008) or Marciac (last summer in an enormous tent before 10,000 spectators),
even those who never dug jazz singers before are suddenly spellbound.
Virginie Teychené was raised on swing and brought up with the sound of two of
the most inventive women jazz vocalists of the 20th century Billie Holiday and
Mimi Perrin (who created the famous “Double Six” vocal Jazz group but who
is sadly not well-known outside of France). She is the woman who introduced
Michel Legrand to vocal jazz. She is an enormous talent, a jazz purist, who prefers to leave fusion and cross-over to the “weak-hearted”. Her jazz is a jazz
statement. It is rich, airy, strong and tasty, served up by a trio who have been intertwining their talents for nearly a decade: Gérard Maurin on bass, Jean-Pierre
Arnaud on drums, and Stéphane Bernard on piano.

Against a bountiful, classy musical backdrop, her voice rises to sunny summits.
When she scats, she totally lets herself go. She swings in Portuguese, evoking
bossa, then switches to French for renditions of Mimi Perrin and Quincy Jones
hits. On stage for the first concert of the evening, Olivier Ker Ourio joins her as
a perfect sideman.

Two six-string guitar masters join their talents for this exciting concert.
Philippe Mouratoglou
Pedro Soler has been a master of the Andalusian guitar for nearly fifty years, playing with great names in Flamenco, folk singers like the
Peruvian storyteller Atahualpa Yupanqui, and contemporary artists like
bassist Renaud Garcia-Fons, and Basque singer Benat Achiary.
Philippe Mouratoglou is just as at home with a classical repertory (for
instance, with the Strasbourg Philharmonic) as he is with modern
creations with the Linéa Ensemble, playing medieval music with the
Convivencia Ensemble, or performing alongside jazz guitarist Bernard
Struber.
«Albeniz y el flamenco, Rumores de la caleta» is constructed from piano compositions by Isaac Albeniz (1860-1909) transcribed by Philippe
Mouratoglou, performed in mirror dialogue with compositions by Pedro
Soler, in an Iberian tradition of mixing musical genres which transcends
boundaries between classical and popular styles. The works by Albeniz
are drawn from the famous , Iberia Suites (El Puerto), Spanish Suites
(Seville, Cuba), Songs of Spain (Cordoba and Prelude, also called Asturias) and other Spanish works (Tango, Malaguena). They are composed
and structured similarly to traditional Flamenco forms. One might say
they are close “cousins” those written a century earlier by Pedro Soler.
Far from being a simple juxtaposition of classical and cosmopolitan
compositions, the alternation between the late 19th century and modern works offers something transcendental. As each guitarist perfectly
understands the other’s repertory, they share the same musical experience and their playing virtually melts together.

The evening starts with a refreshing dip into the sparkling world of the great
composer Johann Nepomuk Hummel (1778-1825). A child prodigy, he was
a very young student of Mozart, then a disciple of Haydn in England. All of
his life, he was influenced by Beethoven, the greatest German musician of
his time, and he was adulated by Chopin and Liszt. Heir of the great Mozart
melodic tradition, Hummel, like his master could blend German and Italian
musical styles, as shown in his Concerto for Mandolin, played during the
April 8 concert by Julien Martineau and the Concerto for Trumpet with the
very young Lucienne Renaudin-Vary as soloist.
Successor to Antonio Salieri as Official Composer for the Austrian Imperial
Court, Leopold Anton Kozeluch was also the music teacher of Marie-Antoinette, the second wife of Napoleon I. In a style strongly influenced by Haydn
and Mozart, he write fifteen symphonies, including the surprisingly fresh
Symphony concertante for double bass, mandolin, trumpet and piano.
The concert ends majestically with Philippe Mouratoglou and the ultra-famous Concerto d’Aranjuez for guitar and orchestra, composed in 1939 by
Joaquin Rodrigo.

The Orchestre Mozart de Toulouse (OMT) was founded
in late 2010, based by Claude Roubichou and a small
group of passionate musicians. This Mozart ensemble is
the only one of its type in the region. It was created for
young talents from the Conservatories of Paris, Lyon and
Toulouse who have interned with the Orchestre National
du Capitole de Toulouse (ONCT) on AÏDA scholarships.
The OMT is mostly made up of former ONCT interns and
their teachers. The full ensemble has thirty musicians.
Born in 1999, Lucienne started playing trumpet in
Philippe Lafitte’s class at the Le Mans Conservatory
in 2007. In 2009, she joined Santiago Quintans’s
jazz class, which she attended at the same time. Her
dazzling progress came to light in 2010, when she won
the Selmer-Le Parnasse completion and also earned
third prize at the Alençon Young European Trumpeter’s
Competition, in the age 14-17 category, whereas she
was in fact only 11 years old at the time. Her virtuosity,
musicality and exceptional maturity were rewarded by
first prizes at every competition in which she took part in
202, including the Concours des Jeunes Artistes Maurice
André in Alès.
She is the only one to have won the Concours des
Petites Mains symphoniques competition in both
classical and jazz. Noticed for her talent, she has
been invited to perform at prestigious Parisian and
International music venues, such as the Salle Gaveau,
Annecy Classic Festival, Les Grandes Heures de Cluny,
Les Flâneries Musicales de Reims, and the Spivakov
Festival in Moscow. .In 2013, she was invited to play at a
homage to Maurice André, at the Victoires de la Musique
Classique.
Claude Robichou
Soloist with the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, and winner of the International Competition of
Rome, Claude Roubichou is a professional flutist and
conductor. He is a graduate of the Conservatories of
Paris and Toulouse. In 2010, he started as head of the
Orchestre National du Capitole. In 2011, along with Tugan Sokhiev, and directed Le Carnaval des Animaux in
Toulouse.
At the opera, he conducted Les Quatre Opéras Bouffe
de Germaine Tailleferre and Wviolan Tchekov’s Bear. He
also regularly conducts various orchestras, such as the
Ensemble Instrumental de l’Ariège and the Toulouse Mozart Orchestra.
Julien Martineau
Born in 1978, Julien Martineau is one of the rare mandolin players in Europe to be a career concert musician. After music studies at the Conservatories of Argenteuil and
Rueil-Malmaison, he started playing at the Paris Opera
at age 16, while he was still a student at the CNSM de
Paris. In 1998, he won the Giuseppe Anedda Prize at
the international mandolin competition in Varazze, Italy.
Since then, he has performed as a soloist at the most
prestigious music festivals and concert halls, including
Châtelet theater in Paris, and the Grand Théâtre d’Aix-enProvence. His musical qualities and refined sound have
made him a favorite partner for renowned performers.
For example, with Bertrand Chamayou, he developed
a program of sonatas for mandolin and piano, which
ranges from the 8th century to modern times.
Philippe Mouratoglou is a rare bird in “six-string land”.
In addition to playing classical guitar, which he explores
with a very wide repertory, he also improvises and sings,
performing with the Linea and Alma Viva ensembles, and
taking part in productions at the Opéra du Rhin and the
OPS, and teaches at the Strasbourg Conservatory and
the TNS. He has released an album dedicated to five
centuries of Spanish guitar music and regularly performs
duets with Soprano Ariane Wohluter.
Philippe Mouratoglou enjoys stretching his expressive
palette. His repertory includes renaissance music,
contemporary sounds, and traditional music, as well as
blues by Robert Johnson flamenco by Pedro Soler and
works by Isaac Albeniz.

The concert given by guitarist Paulus Schäfer and his guests could
doubtlessly be called the “most famous quintet in the flat country”,
given their fantastic reputation ever since the days of their earliest
performances.
Paulus Schäfer was born in the Netherlands in a Sinti family. From a
tender age, he was immersed in the music of the heirs of Django. His
favorite guitar hero and model is certainly Stochelo Rosenberg, and his
musical “cousins”, Biréli Lagrène and Andréas Oberg.
Tim Kliphuis
Paulus Schäfer’s has remarkable and distinctive sound. He plays on
an exceptional instrument; a unique personal guitar model. He is one
of the rare players to truly blend Gypsy sounds and themes with 21st
century music. He is also one of the sponsors of the «Grappelli camp»
organized by violinist Tim Kliphuis (his special guest for the concert)
which, every summer since 2010 brings together music teachers and
students to play Django’s and Grapelli’s compositions..
For this concert, which explores new frontiers, Paulus Schäfer has invited his favorite partners: Noah Schäfer on bass, Romino Grünholz on
guitar, Tim Kliphuis on violin, and Dominique Paats on accordion. Just
as at home with improvisational jazz as he is with classical sheet music
(he’ has performed with the Amsterdam Concertgebow), Tim Kliphuis
is certainly the spiritual heir of Grappelli and often performs alongside
Richard Galliano and Angelo Debarre. Dominique Paats, one of Paulus
Schäfer’s most recent “accomplices” started playing the accordion as
a teenager and has performed internationally, everywhere from Japan
to the USA.

The three composers on this program were each, in their own way, precursors
and innovators.
Alessandro Scarlatti (1660-1725) is the “inventor” of the Italian overture
and the symphonic form, which were sublimed by Georg Philipp Telemann
and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The Concerto grosso in F major is a jewel
of the classical style of the Neapolitan school, intimately blending the soft
sound of the flute with the sharper sound of the trumpet, and the silkiness
of the strings.
Certainly one of the most prolific composers in the history of music, Telemann (1681-1767) composed over 6,000 works in 70 years, including the
charming Concerto for viola and orchestra in G major, which will be performed by Ms Marie Chilemme, and the Toulousain Ensemble.
From Telemann, it’s just a short historical and musical stop to Mozart. The
master melodist of Salzburg give us three symbolic compositions, which
Benoît Fromanger will be performing with his ensemble: a symphony concertante, a violin concerto, and the 29th symphony three pieces composed
when Mozart was only 20 years old, but compositions full of maturity!

A graduate of the Conservatory of Paris, Benoit Fromanger started his musical career a super soloist
at the Orchestre de l’Opéra National de Paris. Ten
years later, he moved to Munich, where he joined
the Symphonie Orchester des Bayerishen Runfunks
as a super soloist. After performing with world-renowned conductors like Leonard Bernstein, Lorin
Maazel, Carlos Kleiber, Bernard Haitink, Zubin
Mehta, Carlo Maria Giulini, and Daniel Barenboim, Benoît Fromanger decided to suspend his
brilliant career as soloist and orchestra musician,
and devote his experience to conducting, which he
studied with Valery Gergiev and Rolf Reuter, at the
Hochschule in Berlin. Now recognized internationally as a top conductor, Benoit Fromanger has
been appointed Chief conductor of the Bucharest
Symphony Orchestra.
1st Prize at the Swedish International Duo Competition in 2010, and 3rd Grand Prize and Special
Prize at the 2010 Marguerite Long-Jacques Thibaud Paris Conservatory students’ competition,
Guillaume Chilemme is one of the top violinists of
his generation. Born in 1987, he started playing
the violin at the age of 3½, and at 5 years old,
entered the Conservatoire National de la Région
de Toulouse. In 2005, he joined Boris Garlitsky’s
class at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de
Paris, where he earned a masters degree with honors. At that time he also completed his chamber
music training and received a prestigious Prize
from Pierre-Laurent Aimard.
From 2008 to 2013, he was chosen by Seiji
Ozawa to attend the International Music Academy
of Switzerland. In 2012, he founded the Quatuor
Cavatine, with whom he won two prozes that year
at the Hambour International Chamber Music
Competition. Since 2011, he has been a regular
member of David Grimal’s ensemble, Les Dissonances.
Bernard Soustrot
Artistic Director of several festivals, well-know
professor and international soloist in demand
throughout the world, and the musical heir of
Maurice André, Bernard Soustrot remains the
most emblematic French trompeter.It’s at age 9
in 1970 that Bernard Soustrot is admitted to the
Paris Conservatory, and becomes Maurice André’s
student. He earns different prizes, including the Paris Conservatory’s First prize for trumpet in 1975.
In that year, he started his career as solo trumpeter at the Suttgart Orchestra, and then joined the
radio France Philharmonic Orchestra in 1976. In
1981, hes astrted his career as an international
concert performer. Since 2013, he has been Artistic director of classical music at «Colmar Fête le
Printemps».

Marie Chilemme
Born in 1988 in Toulouse, Marie Chilemme started
the viola at age 3. In 2005, she was admitted to
the CNSM in Paris. From 2008 to 2012, Marie
Chilemme is chosen for the Académie Ozawa in
Switzerland, where she hones quartet skills and
benefits from advice from the great Seiji Ozawa.
Laureate of the Concours National des Jeunes
Altistes in Bordeaux as well as the Arles International Chamber Music Competition, she often
performs in concert both as a chamber artist and
a soloist at several festivals. She is a regular guest
performer at the Orchestre de Paris, the Orchestre
National du Capitole de Toulouse, the Paris Opera
Orchestra, the Ochestre National de France, and
the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin (RSB) in
Germany.

Wawau Adler, a Sinti guitarist of German origin, must have been
blessed at birth by musical fairy godmothers! He grew up listening to
tunes by Django Reinhardt, the idol of all would-be Gypsy musicians,
and gave his first concert with the family band at age 13: he’s never
left the music scene since!
In 1991, at about age 20, he records his first album, «With body &
soul» as a band leader. Since Gypsy guitar music , to his taste, is too
often played in a stereotypical style, he forms his own special blend
by adding in a dash of be-bop her and a pinch of swing there. After
appearing a first appearance in 2003 at the Samois-sur-Seine Gypsy
jazz festival (a “sacrosanct” event held at the spot where Django once
lived), his guitar style becomes purer and returns to the original authentic playing, without ever being simply a pale copy.
For many years, Wawau Adler and his faithful companion Marcel Loeffler have teamed up to play breathtaking duets/ They’ve recorded an
excellent set of CDs called “Back to the roots». But it’s with his famous
band that he will be playing in Colmar: Robert Weiss on pump, Joël
Locher on bass, and Eva Slongo on violin. Festival goers will love this
musical style which is both very technical and very popular.

The April 11 concert brings together three great names in European
Jazz, even if the guitarist, Paulo Morello, is not yet that well known to
the general public. The leader, on keyboards is Jermaine Landsberger,
and on drums we find the very French André Ceccarelli.
Brought up on popular Hungarian music as well as Django’s brand of
jazz, Jermaine Landsberger soon yearned to become a piano player like
Bill Evans, Oscar Peterson and Michel Petrucciani, even before he ran
into Biréli Lagrène. André Ceccarelli started as a rock drummer in ’62
with Dick Rivers’ group, the Chats Sauvages, and later played for French
disco-era legend, Claude François. Since then, he has mellowed out
and can be seen playing alongside Chick Corea, Michel Portal, JeanLuc Ponty and Dee-Dee Bridgewater, not to mention having fun with
Christian Escoudé, David Links and Biréli!

Holding together these fiery temperaments, Paulo Morello is also a
man of eclectic talents, happy to be play bossa nova or jam with jazz
guitar stars like Jimmy Woode, Larry Coryell, and Philippe Catherine.

Carmen Hey
Violin, guitar and accordion are the traditional tools of the trade for just
about every Sinti band, but for this concert they’ll be playing as equal
partners in a duet, with no none playing rhythm or accompaniment. A
duet with three instruments! No joke but an explosive musical association with Carmen Hey on accordion and Martin Weiss, who is just as
much at home with six-string as he is with a bow and for gut strings.
And although this fifty-something year old artist who has just earned
an honorary doctorate at the University of Mexico and has been named
“European Culture Exporter” by the Goethe Institut, is a lefty, but plays
on a right-handed instrument like few musicians since Jimi Hendrix have
been able to do, it’s sure the audience is in for surprises!
Born into a family of musicians, Martin Weiss learned to play very early
from his grandfather and traveled the world with his uncle’s band. He
has developed an infallible and surprising technique (perhaps because
is lefty) entices audiences the way Oscar Peterson, Stéphane Grappelli, Joe Pass and Ravi Shankar used to do. He has in fact shared the
stage and the recording studio with all of these legends. Carmen Hey, his
partner in musical experimentation, is both accordion queen (in Berlin,
she is a star) and Princess of Swing and Tango. She defines music as
a mix of French-style carefree art de vivre and a fiery musical temperament that can turn heads and move bodies!

By inviting singer Myriam Fuks to share the stage with his band, violinist Roby Lakatos brings together two historically painful destines,
those of two communities repeatedly chased away because of their
beliefs and or lifestyles: Gypsies and Eastern European Jews. Musically, it’s a marriage made in Heaven, celebrated by outstanding
artists who mix Tzigane music with Yiddish melodies.
A virtuoso violinist known for extraordinary eclecticism, Roby Lakatos trained at great conservatories (Budapest and Brussels). A symphonic soloist, he is equally skilled in traditional Hungarian music
(one of his forbearers was no other than Janos Bihani, the king of
the Tzigane violin), and improvisational Jazz. He has performed with
Herbie Hancock, Stéphane Grappelli and Quincy Jones (his jazz
cousins), as well as with both Vadim Repin and Maxim Vengerov –
two of today’s top classical violinists.

Ambassadress of Yiddish culture and language, promoting the secular traditions of Eastern European Jews, Myriam Fuks is an ideal
musical companion for this violinist and they take us on a timeless

Nicknamed “The young lion of jazz” by a New York after one of his concerts

offers Colmar two consecutive performances with two distinctive stylestwo facets of his mature musical work.

Recorded with just a few of his musical stagemates, his latest album
entitled “Crazy sound” is at the heart of the concert that kicks off the

guitarist Samson Schmitt changes musical partners for a routine to his
European and trans-border roots, anchored in tradition, but without a
trace of nostalgia or changelessness. All aboard for a perfectly contemporary voyage!
For Samson Schmitt, his musical heritage is Manouche or Gypsy culture
represented by Django, along with hints of Eastern and Mediterranean
Europe, mixed with sun, and served up nice and hot with good friends!
Samson’s is someone who really knows how to put together a band, and
his all-star pals really know how to please crowds (including on the other
side of the Atlantic, where Leonardo di Caprio is actually a big fan). He

The very name of this group, the “Princes du Bac Sauvage”, that includes
violinist Yardani Torres Maiani and her alter ego; the guitarist Roma Gilles
Moffat, evokes the very spirit of their music. In fact, “Le Bac sauvage”
refers to an outlying part of Saintes-Maries de la Mer, where a river
ferry crosses the Petit Rhône. This is a neighborhood where sedentary
Gypsies settled, a place which binds the two musicians with childhood
ties. Yardani came with her family from Spain and Roma from was born
in foggy Flanders.

A place of pilgrimage, bringing together people from all sorts of ethnic
backgrounds, the Saintes-Maries setting is fantastic sound laboratory

will actually be her first public concert in Eastern France. Once of the

amazing Moroccan singer Karim Alami, who will transport us to the other
side of the Mediterranean.

Etienne «Timbo» Mehrstein, violinist. His fact sheet mentions that he
also played alongside Samson Schmitt (on stage in Colmar three days
before him the “Sinti swing, jazz & Co 2014” show) that he comes from
a family of musicians, that his sound can be likened to that of Stéphane Grappelli, and that the critics say he is one of the most brilliant
performers of his generation.
But what it doesn’t say is really the essential: what the audience feels
at one of his concerts, or when they when they listen to “Maré Tchavengé”, the album he recorded just a few months ago: the wonderful
emotions, the cohesion and spirit of his group, the amazing inventiveness of his compositions, and the quality of the orchestrations of the
different standards he plays, like the theme song from Jacques Demy’s
«Les parapluies de Cherbourg», composed by Michel Legrand.

A team player, Timbo Mehrstein doesn’t just practice the subtle art
of turning the number over to his sidemen; for him friendship means
cohesion, mutual respect, and making beautiful music all together. He
performs in Colmar with his illustrious musical partners and a special

Some destinies seem to be preordained and others chosen. Nothing
foretold that Cyrille Aimée, an artist with a silky, fascinating voice,
would become a Manouche style jazz singer; it was deliberate taste
she made back when she was a teenager. Franco-Dominican by birth,
she learned the music at a young age growing up in the very place that
is home to the biggest Gypsy jazz festival in France, Samois-sur-Seine.
“Swing”, she says; “is a music that always fills me with joy”.
Cyrille attended the American School of Modern Music in Paris
and also enriched her musical training with stays in the Dominican
Republic and New York before making a European tour and “going
where the wind (and contracts) would take her”. Things then went
very quickly for Cyrille, as she moved out of the shadows and into the
limelight, recording with the cream of Brazilian musicians as well as
with Roy Hardgrove and under her own name. She also performs with
a number of top Sinti musicians. 2014 is a busy year for her because
she is doing two tours, with 40 concerts in the US, including six at the
legendary Birdland in New York.
Pour this shimmering performance, Cyrille will be accompanied by her
faithful guitarist Adrien Moignard, bassist Jérémy Arranger, and rhythm
guitar player Hono Winterstein, back for a third consecutive time in
Colmar.

Founded in 1986 by four young graduates of the CNSM in Paris, the Quatuor
Epsilon (“Epsilon Quartet”) quickly built a solid reputation in very demanding
musical world, thanks to both their musical cohesion, and the breadth of
their repertory, which allows them to play alongside the French Republican
Guard Orchestra or a good old brass band. Creators of contemporary works,
the quartet is supported by the French Ministry of Culture and Foreign
Affairs, as well as by Pierre Boulez, the quartet’s honorary president.
An unusual ensemble combining a trumpet, a trombone, a French horn and
a tuba, Epsilon quickly overcame the problem of repertory by drawing from
modern composers and by having Tuba player arrange western masterpieces.
Many of the numbers played during this concert take something jazzy,
like Piazzola’s Libertango and Adiostango, or Gershwin ‘s preludes; other
numbers may be more ethereal, like a few gems by Claude Debussy.

The very talented Gilles Apap is an atypical violinist, a surprisingly unique
artist in the all-too-often hermetic world of music.

With him, borders disappear, genres are reinterpreted and certainty is no
more than supposition. Gilles Apap can be a disciplined player but he is
also happy to experiment with everything from java to jazz..
Virtually covered with musical honors (including the coveted First Prize in
Contemporary music at the Yehudi Menuhin competition in 1985), Gilles
Apap is an accomplished soloist who is often invited to perform with
symphonic orchestras.
Ludovit Kovac
A dozen years ago, Gilles Apap also created an ensemble called Colors of
invention, a deliberate reference to another less than conventional artist,
the illustrious Frank Zappa.
With his faithful sidekicks Myriam Lafargue, Philippe Noharet and Ludovit
Kovac, all experts in the art of improvisation and musical acrobatics, Gilles
Apap spotlights traditional music from Irish pubs and Indian streets, often
juxtaposing them with phrases from classical masterpieces (Gilles is an
enormous fan of a certain Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.) Whether Darjeeling
is your cup of tea, or you’d rather down a pint of Guinness, this concert has
something for everyone.

An Easter concert!
Fifty years “young”, the Orchestre Royal de Chambre de Wallonie, based
in Mons is just as much at home performing as an ensemble, as they are
playing experimental sounds with big-time rockers or accompanying prestigious soloists.
Quatuor Epsilon
This concert is great chance for them to show off their eclecticism. Conducted by Vincent Monteil, they will be teaming up with the Quatuor Epsilon
to play a world creation by composed by their Tuba player, Thierry Thibault,
young oboe player Olivier Stankiewicz and pianist Jean-Philippe Collard, a
long-time friend of violinist Augustin Dumay, the Orchestra’s Musical Director.
These soloists will also interpret some stunning music by Mozart: the
Concerto for oboe in C major, commissioned by a rich patron of the arts to
“shine” musically in salons; and the 14th Concerto for piano in pour piano
en D flat major, dedicated to his student, Babette Ployer. These are luminous
compositions that radiate simplicity and musicality.

The Orchestre Royal de Chambre de Wallonie
(O.R.C.W.) was founded in 1958 and has worked
with many outstanding performers, including Mstislav
Rostropovitch, Aldo Ciccolini, Mischa Maïski, Maurice
André, Arthur Grumiaux, Jean-Pierre Rampal, Guidon
Kremer, Louis Lortie, Ivry Gitlis, Tatjana Vassiljeva, Antoine Tamestit and Maria João Pires. In 2014, Frank
Braley Augustin Dumay, who had brilliantly served as
the Orchestra’s Musical Director since 2003. The Orchestra has taken part in many major events, such as
the Festival de Radio France-Montpellier, the Festival
de La Roque d’Anthéron, and the Fêtes Musicales de
Touraine at the famous Grange de Meslay. They have
earned countless ovations on stages in Beijing, Abu
Dhabi, Bucharest and elsewhere.
Born in 1948, Jean-Philippe Collard was raised in
large and musical family. He fell in love with chamber
music playing with his folks. He played so well, that
at age 10, he was packed off to the capital to attend
the Conservatoire national supérieur de Paris, he was
ready to perform internationally.
Vincent Monteil
Vincent Monteil studied musicology at the Sorbonne,
after complete music training at the Conservatories of
Angers and then Rueil-Malmaison. He further developed his talents by studying conducting with Gérard
Devos and Pierre Dervaux.
From 1991 to 1996, he was Assistant Musical Director at the Théâtre du Capitole in Toulouse, where he
acquired invaluable experience in the lyrical repertory
with maestros such as Michel Plasson and Donato
Renzetti. In 1996, Klaus Weise, Musical Director of the
Nice Philharmonic, asked Vincent to join him there as
Assistant Conductor. Until 2000, he directed the Lézat-sur-Lèze Music Festival, which he had founded in
1996. Since 2008, he has been Musical Director of
the Opéra Studio of the Opéra National du Rhin.
Olivier Stankiewicz
«ADAMI Classical revelation” in 2013, 1st prize at the
10th International Oboe Competition of Japan, held
by the Sony Music Foundation in 2012, Oboe solo at
the ‘Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse since
2011, Olivier Stankiewicz has proven himself to be
one of the most talented 23-year old on the classical
muisic scene. He studies contemporary repertorries,
works with composers, improvises, explores electronic
music, and sits on the Board of the contemporary music collective, known as “Warn!ng”.
Today Jean-Philippe Collard can be rightfully proud
of over sixty albums and performs at prestigious venues throughout Europe and North America: Carnegie
Hall, Teatro Colon, Théâtre des Champs-Elysées and
Royal Albert Hall. He has performed with many of the
greatest conductors and orchestras in the world.
Since December 2011, Jean-Philippe Collard has
been Artistic Director of Flâneries Musicales de Reims
Quatuor Epsilon
The Epsilon ensemble was created by four close
classmates from the Conservatoire National Supérieur
de Musique de Paris. Since then, Epsilon has given
over 1,000 concerts on five continents, and, on the
dawn of their 30th anniversary, has a vast dsicography. In 1993, Epsilon was a prize winner at the Osaka
International Chamber Music Competition,where they
contended with the greatest string ensembles of that
time. Their broad repertory includes just about every
type of music, including baroque, classical, romantic,
contemporary, jazz and traditional.

Musical fireworks!
An instrumental ensemble and a choir conducted by Erwin List, some of Europe’s
most remarkable classical trumpeters, unbeatable accordion players and five young
Opéra Studio soloists – the closing concert of «Colmar fête le printemps» will be a
virtual fireworks for music lovers of every taste.

The opening number will be Vivaldi’s Red Priest of Venice, a hymn to human rebirth
and spiritual renewal. The closing piece will be Bach’s Eater Oratorio. These are works
which transcend religious fervor: they are universal messages of friendship, brotherhood and peace. Also to be performed are transcriptions for organ of two pieces by
Edward Elgar, the early 20th century English master.

Collegium Cantorum de Strasbourg
Erwin List is the main founder of the Strasbourg
University Orchestra, which celebrated its fiftieth
anniversary in 2011. For 25 years, he directed
the University Vocal Ensemble, before succeeding René Matter for 25 years as Director of
the Saint Guillaume Choir. His musical activity
is inseparable from his role as an educator. He
taught at the Musicology Institute of the University of Strasbourg, and was Choral and Singing
Technical and Educational Advisor for the French
Ministry of Youth and Sports. In Alsace, he
created the Regional Association for te Training
of Chorale Leaders, now known as the Centre
d’Art Polyphonique d’Alsace, and the Kleebach
training center in Munster, which he has directed
for 30 years.
The Collegium Cantorum de Strasbourg is a choir
was founded in 1986 and has since then been
directed by Erwin List. Made up of forty singers,
the choir performs a varied repertory, either a
cappella or accompanied by a great orchestra
such as the Strasbourg Philharmonic, the Follia
de Mulhouse or the Rhénanie-Palatinat Philharmonic. They have also performed for many years
at the Strasbourg Music Festival.
François-Henri Houbart
François-Henri Houbart began studying Piano
at the age of 7, and organ by age 11. In 1978,
he won 2nd prize at the International Improvisation Competition in Lyon. In 1974, he began
his career as a Parisian organ player, when he
was appointed stand-in organist at the historic
Church of Saint-Séverin. En 1979, just 26 years
old, he became organist at the historic Madeleine church in Paris, following in the footsteps
of Camille Saint-Saëns, Theodore Dubois and
Gabriel Fauré. Recognized as one of the greatest
present-day improvisers, he has given over
1,200 concerts or recitals throughout Europe,
North America and Japan.
Franck Pulcini
Originally from Limoges, this trumpeter studied
at the Paris Conservatory with Pierre Thibaud. a
laureate of several International competitions
(Prague, Toulon, Narbonne, Osaka and Tokyo),
Franck Pulcini is the co-founder of the Epsilon
brass ensemble. He is known as an international soloist, music professor and accomplished
chamber music player. Since 1995, he has been
solo trumpeter at the SWR Orchestra of Freiburg/Baden-Baden.
Nicolas André
Born in 1972, he began playing trumpet with
his dad, Maurice André, at the age of six. After
studying at the Conservatories of Versailles and
Rueil-Malmaison with Eric Aubier, he has toured
the world with his sister and illustrious father.
He founded the highly successful Maurice André
Baroque Trio. Nicolas André is a professor at the
Valencia Conservatory and is currently trumpeter
with the Pamplona Opera Orchestra in Spain.
Les solistes de l’Opéra Studio
With eight singers and two pianist/leaders, the
Opéra Studio of the Opéra national du Rhin
is one of the rare structures in France to offer
young artists a transition between their years as
music students and the start of a career as performing artists. It is an advanced training unit
that focuses on reinforcing know-how through
master classes with the greatest professionals,
and professional placement. Five singers from
the class of 2014 will be on stage for the great
closing concert.
