CHECKMATE
I can't remember when I learned how to play chess. I wonder if children today are
learning the game. To them, with PlayStations in hand, chess must seem incredibly
quaint, old-fashioned, and slow. It uses a whole different set of skills, relying on thinking
ahead and getting into your opponent's thoughts rather than hand-eye coordination.
An interesting component to chess is the relative weakness of the king compared
with the other chess pieces around him. The king must be protected at all costs even as
the other pieces move to attack the opposing king. This is an interesting concept of kingship.
On this Feast of Christ the King, we have an image of the Shepherd protecting the sheep. It is a comforting and
familiar image. We know that God protects us. But the readings also challenge us to protect one another--the weak,
the hungry, the imprisoned.
This reflects the kingship of Jesus. We are being trusted to make Christ's kingship what it needs to be. We
become the presence of Christ our king in the world today. We determine the image of Christ for the world to see
and experience as Christ works through us--if we let him. It is our choice. And how we respond determines if we
have protected Christ's presence in our world.
This is no easy task. To be able to make all the right moves, we come forward to share in the presence of Christ
in the Eucharist. We take our king into our hearts and into our world.

You are amazing, you are not worthless
but worthy just because of who you are!
Basically, Hard As Nails centered around the
theme that "You Are Amazing." Going into this
event I expected a lecture about how your faith
ties into your life, why you should follow God,
and all that. But it proved to be so, so much more.
It was a more interactive faith experience. I
was legitimately changed by this experience; I
smile more, I've been inspired, and I want to make
more of an effort to go to mass and “be” at mass
when I am there. We were invited to go to
confession as a part of the event. I've realized
from confession that one of the worst sins to
commit is actually to take the Lord's name in vain.
I really liked the presenter, Justin Fatica and if we
could attend again I would definitely make every
effort to go, and I recommend anyone else who
can attend to do the same. His talks are uplifting,
enlightening, and insanely fun. There is definitely
something to be said for his methods for reaching
teens. All in all, Justin was a downright cool guy.

St. Barnabas Welcomes
The Roman Missal
THE NEW ROMAN MISSAL HAS ARRIVED!
Beginning next weekend, St. Barnabas, along with all Roman Catholic Parishes throughout the United
States, will begin using the New Roman Missal.
Pew cards, with the new prayer texts, will be in the pews for your convenience. The missalettes regularly
found in the pews will also contain the new prayers and responses.
We will continue to sing the revised Mass of Creation which we began in September. The music for these
mass parts can be found in the hymnal insert in the back cover of the Gather Book.
If you missed our series of articles on the who, what, why, and when of the New Roman Missal, they can be
found on our parish website at :
http://www.stbarnabasparish.org/worship/newroman.aspx.
It is our hope that we will embrace these changes with a renewed spirit for the Eucharist we celebrate each
week and will use this opportunity to really focus on and be conscious of the words we pray as we come
together to worship God.

November 20, at 2pm
Beverly Art Center 1111th and Western, Chicago
Jack O’Keefe, the son of Irish immigrants, earned a Ph.D. in Literature, and
attended the University of Iowa Writer’s Workshop. In Famine Ghost,
O'Keefe captures the raw details of the 1845-1850 Great Irish Famine,
building our awareness of the true drama through photos, newspaper clips
and drawings. It is a chilling story of the one million who died in Ireland
and two million who emigrated. Visit author's website. Attendees may
