2012 WINNER of the Newsletter Competition
FROM OUR PRESIDENT, RONNIE PITTMAN
Recently, I was reading Charles Martin’s
book, The Mountain Between Us. I share
with you an excerpt of a chapter in which a
sports medicine surgeon is in the airport dictating about this patient to his computer for
transcription. He states, “Patient’s name is
Rebecca Peterson, DOB 7/6/95, medical
record number BMC2453, Caucasian female, star right wing on her soccer team,
leading scorer in Florida, highly recruited
by teams around the country, at last count
she had fourteen Division I offers; surgery
three weeks ago, post op was normal presenting no complications, followed by
aggressive physical therapy; present full
range of motion, bend test 127 degrees,
strength test shows marked improvement, as
does agility. She’s good as new, or in her
words, “better.” Rebecca reports movement in pain free, and she is free to resume all activities…except skateboarding. She is to stay off the skateboard until
she’s at least thirty-five.”
A young female reporter next to him overhears his dictating about his patient.
(The author evidently did not do his research on HIPPA)! In response to the
reporter hearing, she states to the surgeon “You really get to know your patients,
don’t you?” “Sorry I couldn’t help but overhear.” He nodded, “Something my
wife taught me.” (She is a nurse). The reporter responds, “which is?”
“That people are more than the sum of their blood pressure plus their pulse
divided by their body mass index.”
OUR MISSION
To promote high standards of
PeriAnesthesia and
Ambulatory Surgery nursing
care, recognize our specialty
and provide educational
opportunities.
Wow!! This is a reality check much needed in the medical field by doctors,
nurses, and other hospital personnel and professional organizations. Although
the author is writing fiction, he is in touch with the real world with real people
like you and me. We want to be recognized as a human and connected to others
- be known other than just a medical record number, a disease/diagnosis, or a
room number.

PeriAnesthesia Nurse Awareness Week (PANAW) provides an ideal opportunity to celebrate and promote our
practice throughout the nation! The 2013 celebration will be held from February 4-10, 2013, and this year's
theme is, PeriAnesthesia Nurses: Compassionate, Caring, Competent. There are several things you and your
component can do now to begin promoting PANAW and make the week as successful as possible:
1. Place an ad for PANAW in your component newsletter, including dates, logo, and the link to the online
product catalog: www.panaw.com<http://www.panaw.com>. Please forward this information to your
newsletter editor, and the 2013 PANAW logo is attached for immediate use.
2. Plan to celebrate-and call attention to-PANAW at your hospital or place of work. Announcements in em
ployee publications/emails, displays of clothing and posters, and even offering coffee and cake within
your unit or office are all a good start.
3. Order your promotional materials before the end-of-year rush, allowing maximum time to plan for, and pro
mote, the week. The online product catalog is now available at
www.panaw.com<http:// www.panaw.com>.
4. The National Office will promote PANAW at the national level. Your component can do the same at the
state and local levels by contacting appropriate government officials, obtaining a proclamation for Peri
Anesthesia Nurse Awareness Week, and sharing PANAW information with the press. Additional in
formation is available on ASPAN's website. From the homepage,
www.aspan.org<http:www.aspan.org>, go to: Events > PANAW.
Thank you for your help gearing up for PANAW 2013. Please be sure to send me other ideas for promoting
PANAW so they can be incorporated into future marketing plans, and don't hesitate to contact me with any
questions.

It is that time of year again to gather together information to submit ASPAN's Gold Leaf
application. Judy Schneider is going to fill out the application this year. We need all the
information regarding any educational offerings your district had this year....we need the
flyer for the meeting, program etc. and also the contact hour certificate. Also include any
Community Service project done by your district this year. If you have photos to send
that would be great. Has anyone done research within your district? Do you have donations of textbooks to nursing schools, or did you offer scholarships to nursing students?
(whether anyone applied for them or not.)
Some of you have the "Research Primer" that I gave out a couple of years ago. It
has everything we need in it if you will look at it please and send any information you
have to Judy Schneider at [email protected]
Thanks so much,
Debbie

Notes from Our President Elect
The past 30 days has been like a marathon for me with
education and promoting certification. As the VP/
President elect for next term for NCAPAN, I attended
CDI Sept 7, 8, 9 in St. Louis. It was a wealth of information about Districts with regards to boards and
meetings. I learned about being incorporated, bylaws,
financial planning, constructing effective educational
programs, our strategic plan, and how to perfect our
Gold Leaf Application. I did find a couple of hours to
enjoy a St. Louis/Brewers baseball game.
At our August board meeting, we discussed having
someone attend the Anesthesiologist conference in
Myrtle beach Sept 28, 29. I did not have anything
scheduled that weekend-so I volunteered. Seems everyone else had plans. The conference itself had great
information. The MDA’s really had little interest in
visiting with the vendors-which is where I was. My
personal group of anesthesiologists, that I work with
in Raleigh, did come visit with me, but the remainder
of those I decided to go to the tables of food at breakfast and breaks to chat. The folks I talked with had no
idea if their Nurses were Certified or not. So I gave
out information about ASPAN, NCAPAN and challenged them to go back and ask the question and encourage the nurses to forge ahead and become certified-be smarter-better informed.
October 3 and 4 I went to Concord, N.C. to attend the
NCNA conference with Cindy Warren to promote
PACU Nursing and Certification. This is the education
conference for North Carolina. There were 450 Nurses
there. There were discussions of BSN, Masters educated nurses, and PHD's, and how we need to get younger people interested in our profession so health care

Welcome and Announcements
CDI Report—Sonia
Very “warm” and supportive conference to grow and
support components. Talked about successes and struggles of
components and highlighted the good things the strong components were doing. BOD retreats, membership communication, financial planning, strategic planning and a mock representative assembly were all topics.
Financial planning answer was “depends on your
component’s cash flow, how much risk your component is
willing to take and where your component is financially.” We
have access to our national advisors on investing as needed.
Discussion followed on how to improve communication with districts by using a template to report on activities
and another template to submit finances. Ronnie has already
provided a template for the district presidents to report. See
previous email or let Ronnie know if you need that. Plan to see
if Chris can provide a template for financial reporting.

President's Message Continued
We were taught in nursing school to scope out the patient room to find something to help us connect to the patient.
Often, it was a book, a picture, or piece of jewelry, ect., that provided an opportunity for connection. As perianesthesia nurses, we know when we reach beyond the statistics, vital signs, surgery case, and the hospital gown and
“Connect” to our patients there is something that happens to the patient and us. It’s like during the movie, “ET” when
Henry Thomas (Elliott) and ET touched each other with their fingers. Magic happened and the rest is history.
NCAPAN is diligent at making that connection with you. One of those moments was at the great NCAPAN State
Conference hosted by TAPAN. The educational lectures presented provided us with tools to connect to the patient/
family and each other. We learned more about our procedures, interventions, and psychosocial needs in order to provide the competent care that elicits trust from our patient to us. This happens with connection. Also, the conference
allowed us the opportunity to connect with our peers to network and to fellowship, besides all the great door prizes. It
is such an important time for us to hear and learn of what is happening in perianesthesia nursing through each area of
the state, thus building on the foundation of what North Carolina as a whole can do. Our NCAPAN website and
“Carolina Breaths,” and your NCAPAN board members are available for us connect to you and you to us. We want to
hear from you and to have your voice heard throughout the State of North Carolina because we are a collective force
of perianesthesia nursing.
Other moments to connect are at the district meetings and reports given by your president to the board which connects
us to your activities and needs. Your activity in perianesthesia pursuit of excellence in practice and community involvement is evident from these reports. We applaud all the research, educational opportunities, and performance
improvement projects, that each of you does which reflects best practice that is evidence based. You continually
serve our patients and the professional organization with proud moments through your tireless work and willingness
to serve.
As individual professional perianesthesia nurses serving at the bedside, in your organization and unit council(s), leading on the district level, serving on the NCAPAN board, and ASPAN committees you are vital. These cumulative
services connect us to a powerful and credible professional organization. I applaud each of you for your sacrifice of
time, talents, and willingness to keep us connected to our patients and other professional nursing organizations.
ASPAN’s vision is to rise to the challenge and be a conduit to standards, best practice, and preparing us all for a
brighter future.
ASPAN, like NCAPAN, provides us with many areas to connect to be successful in our practice. In September
Angela McClendon and Sonia Huff participated in the Component Development Institute (CDI) in St. Louis. Please
be sure to read Sonia’s report in BOD minutes. This opportunity provided ASPAN to connect with all 50 state components and its leaders. Any time you have an opportunity to attend one of the CDI’s (one must be a member of
ASPAN), I strongly recommend it. You are given the many tidbits and products of education from our national organization and its mission. The CDI arms our state leaders with additional education, leadership and information that
filter down to you and facilitate our personal practice on the state level. We in NCAPN are very strong with other
national components; I applaud you for our successes. We are fortunate that we have a national organization which
provides its members with the tools of successful application and professional practice to be on the cutting edge of
perianesthesia nursing and share internationally.
The whole purpose of our practice is for us to connect not only to the patient/family in addition to each other as perianesthesia nurses. You as a NCAPAN member are more than the sum of your blood pressure plus your pulse divided
by your body index. You have family, friends, work, church, and community activities that are touched and connected because of you. It is my hope during this season of celebration that you continue to connect to all the people you
serve and to our NCAPAN members and board of directors. Pass your talents to your district, state and the national
levels. We appreciate you and your impact in our lives.
The BOD and myself thank you for all you do for PeriAnesthesia Nursing. I salute each of you during PeriAnesthesia
Nurse Awareness Week February 4-10, 2013. I hope you celebrate in your nursing units and recognize each other for
your teamwork to provide compassionate caring and competent care to your patients and families. Congratulations !!
