“Blessed are they whose ways are blameless, who walk according to the law of the Lord. Blessed are they who keep his
statutes and seek the Lord with all their heart... Oh, that my ways were steadfast in obeying your decrees, O Lord... I will
praise you with an upright heart as I learn your righteous laws... I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin
against you... give me understanding to learn your commands... My soul faints with longing for your salvation, but I have
put my hope in your word... Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path...”
Psalm 119, selected verses
Dear Friends,
Sunday, September 8, is “Rally Day” for the church, the day that we lift up the myriad opportunities we offer for
growth through our Christian Education ministry. We will highlight the various classes and Bible study opportunities
that will be offered on Sunday mornings and throughout the week. And then on September 15, we will resume our
two-service Sunday morning schedule, with worship at 8:45 and 11:00, and Sunday school at 9:50 a.m.
I sincerely hope you will take advantage of our Christian Education opportunities. Let me say that again: I
sincerely hope you will take advantage of our Christian Education opportunities.
Part of what I have been sharing with you on Sunday mornings during August and September is the mutual
responsibility we have toward one another in the church. Our goal should be to get “Better Together.” Among the
responsibilities we have are the mandates to “teach and admonish one another in all wisdom,” (Colossians 3:16),
and “encourage and build up each other” (1 Thessalonians 5:11); these are, among other things, calls to grow in the
knowledge of the content of our faith. You really can't do that by yourself; you need a community environment in
which
to grow and learn.
Again, I sincerely hope you will take advantage of our Christian Education opportunities.
One evening in August I was meeting with our Session as we were seeking to discern our core values that shape
and guide our ministry. At the top of the list was an agreement that our ministry needs to be guided and informed
by God's Word, the Bible. God's Word needs to be the foundation upon which we build our ministry and live our
Christian life. What we say and do must be measured against the standard of Scripture.
But here's the deal: we can't simply assume that people know the Bible like once was the case. To know the
Bible, we have to study the Bible. To that point, let me say it again: I sincerely hope you will take advantage of our
Christian Education opportunities. Most of the classes and groups are mentioned throughout the Columns, but let me
highlight the basics for you: Sunday school—classes for children, youth, AND adults; Wednesday Bible Studies (this
fall we are studying Romans); Wednesday evening BRIDGES programming (three adult studies, as well as activities
for children, plus you can have a meal!); Presbyterian Women circles (meeting dates and times found in this issue of
The Columns). If none of these opportunities suit you, let us know and we'll be happy to help you develop a study
group to fit your needs.
God's Word is a precious treasure. Never in our lives will we reach the point where we know it all. There's always
room for growth. And so, (you guessed it!), I sincerely hope you will take advantage of our Christian Education
opportunities.
Faithfully,
Steve

Some members found the key to successfully growing their own church right in their own
neighborhoods. When a new family moved in on their street or neighborhood, that church
member invited them to their church. These members did not wait for new residents
possibly to find their church; they first invited them to visit their church. This is great
wisdom because one caring member can be a powerful catalyst for introducing a neighbor
to a life in Christ. One small act of kindness can make a positive difference in the life of your
neighbor, also in the life of your church, and in your own life.
Romans 15: 2 & 5—“Each of us should please his neighbor for his good, to build
him up. May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you a spirit of unity among yourselves as you follow Christ Jesus.”
Remember no man is an island. Celebrate our connectedness. Never underestimate the
power of one! We are better together!

The City of Mullins sprang from the growing, harvesting and selling of tobacco beginning in 1894.
Proving that tobacco and farm life was the life-blood of the community, Mullins grew to become the
largest tobacco market in South Carolina at one time. The Museum, which opened in August 1998,
focuses on the growing of tobacco and rural farm life prior to 1950.
More details in the next issue of Columns and upcoming announcements.
Both Bible study sessions will be led by Steve Wilkins. We will be
studying Paul’s Letter to the Romans.
Bring your Bibles and a willingness to learn from God’s Word!
PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN
Presbyterian Women(PW) offers women in the church meaningful ways to live their faith in the midst of a caring community of women. For more than 200 years PW groups have strengthened the Presbyterian Church and played a major role in sharing the good news of Jesus Christ and witnessing to the
promise of God’s Kingdom. Come join us!

many faces of the hispanic ministry
Dear Friends,
Just before we start a new school year, I would like to thank you for your support that
has allowed us to continue our work and share with you some of the things we did
during this fun summer season.
Our children had the opportunity to participate in VBS twice, at GPC and Duncan UMC,
where they reconnected with people they had met previously, learned some more
about our faith and enjoyed true Christian fellowship. We also went to the movies, the
beach, an exciting show and dinner at Pirate’s Voyage Adventure in Myrtle Beach and
climbed rock walls, rode go-carts, played putt-putt and participated in water wars at
Blackbeard’s Cove in Mount Pleasant. It was great and an excellent way to say good bye
to ten of our students who will be attending middle school this year.
Also, I am very pleased and excited to announce that Mrs. Ashley Baker has joined
our Hispanic Ministry team. Now, with renewed energy, a new staff member and some
more new students, it is time for us to re-focus and continue working. Our program will
resume on September 9.
God Bless,
Yorky

children’s ministry
Greetings Everyone,
This month we kick off our fall activities. I hope that you will join us Sunday, September 8th for our Rally
Day event. The festivities begin during our 10:00am Worship Service with the Commissioning of our Sunday
School Teachers and Assistants. After worship, we will gather in the Fellowship Hall for some long awaited
promotions, and lunch. Please bring a dish to share. We will be having a Chili Cook Off between some our
members. You will have the opportunity to “vote” on your favorite recipe!! We are sure to have a good time,
and you will want to be a part of the special celebration.
Our Children's Journey Adventures (formerly known as Sunday school) will resume on Sunday, September
15th. Parents PLEASE have the children arrive in the Fellowship Hall at 9:30am. We want them to enjoy
some fellowship time and possibly a light breakfast snack before we begin our Journey Adventures upstairs.
The Fall Journey will take us from Judges to Kings. The children will learn about Deborah, Hannah, Samuel,
David, Elijah and Josiah just to name a few. This time of learning is VERY important in the spiritual growth
of children. I pray that you will make every effort to have the children join us on Sunday mornings. We are
going to have a change of format that we hope will enhance the learning experience for each and every child
that attends Georgetown Presbyterian Church. Our upstairs will be known as the Bible Village. We are in
the process of “creating” a village atmosphere. Shepherds (teachers) will lead the children from station to
station each week. We may have crafts one week, and music the next. Each Sunday will hold somewhat of a
different mix for the children. We are looking forward to our time together and hope that you are too!!!
BRIDGES will resume Wednesday, September 11th. We will be using drama, puppets and interactive games
to teach the children about “What’s in the Bible”. Dinner begins at 5:15pm. The children will gather from
6pm – 7pm. Please join us in the Fellowship Hall each Wednesday. This is an AWESOME gathering time. IF
you have never attended, PLEASE consider joining us. Wonderful fellowship and good food for the tummy
AND the SPIRIT!!!
Georgetown Presbyterian is a great place to be, come and experience as much as you are able. Jesus paid a
great price for our salvation and it is a privilege to be able to gather in His name. Join us!
In Christ,
Debbie

Use lectio divina in your daily reading of scripture by reading a few verses of the Bible. Read unhurriedly and listen for the
message God has for you. Stay alert to connections the Spirit may reveal between the passage and what is going on in your
life. Once you have heard a word that is meant for you, you are naturally drawn to prayer. Pour your heart to God.
Read, reflect, respond and rest — this is the basic rhythm of divine reading.

Won’t you take time to each day to let God speak to you through His Word? Listed below is a series of daily readings from
the Bible. You are encouraged to spend a few minutes in the morning to let the scriptures soak into your heart. You may
choose to begin each day by reading the psalm of the week. There is a single text listed for each weekday and Saturday; the
Sunday texts are the Old Testament, Epistle and Gospel lectionary selections that are incorporated into our worship services
(Note: during the time between Easter and Pentecost, the Old Testament lesson is replaced by a reading from Acts). One
suggestion for daily reading would be to engage with the text through a process known as “Lectio Divina” (a Latin term that
simply means “Divine Reading”).
