Message From Our Chief Bale Stopper
In a time of change and uncertainty
in our nation’s life, how wonderful it
is to have the truly British events
that we know and love coming
around again. The Bale Push at
Crantock has been a feature of
village life now for long enough to
be established for all time. The excitement,
anticipation and effort that goes into it all is
exhilarating to say the least, and I know that
training ready for September 2016 is already being
taken seriously.
Our faithful and well-loved former priest in
Crantock Rev’d Morley Wills loved the Bale Push
and it is with sadness that I record his passing
away in May this year. His frame stopping the
bales at the finish was easily recognisable and will
not be forgotten for many bale pushes to come.
Morley is sadly missed by us all but his spirit of
enthusiasm for this particular event will never die.
So it is with great excitement and expectation that
we look forward to this year’s bale push, in trust
will I be praying for better weather than last year
– but if it does its worst again – then so be it – I
wouldn’t miss the experience for anything – it has
become for me one of the great highlights of the
calendar and represents in our troubled world the
very best of community living and care for those
for whom the money is so generously raised.
Last year’s event must surely be remembered as
the wettest – those of us who endured to the end
won’t ever forget it – the bales getting heavier and
heavier and slower and slower until they were so
sodden we could hardly move them away on the
flat at the finishing post. Our own clothes were
equally sodden and weighty, but not to be deflected
from the task in hand – all discomfort and fear of
pneumonia was put aside to cheer and encourage
those who bravely fought on to get the bales
around the course.
May I wish the organisers, who always do a
spectacular job, all the best for this year’s event
and all who work so hard in the village to prepare
for it – a successful and thoroughly happy evening.

records broken – but there was still a huge turnout
of people ready to enjoy the evening however wet
they got. It must have been a great night for
business in the pubs – it was the only way to keep
dry – being inside them not out!

From The Committee
Nothing could have prepared us for the awful weather we
experienced in 2015! The rain fell almost as soon as we
started the first push and continued on and off for most
of the evening! The netting wrapped bales grew heavier
as the night progressed – as many of you will know that
on a wet Bale Push night the straw absorbs every bit of
moisture and turns the bales into very heavy solid objects
[ this for some adds to the fun and for other maybe not!!
However, this did not deter the 90 plus teams who took
part with their usual enthusiasm and excitement.

Committee has selected Cornwall Hospice Care [in
memory of Father Morley Wills], Motor Neurone Disease
Association [Cornwall Branch] and Help Izzy Walk. We
will, of course be making donations to other local
organisations.
One of the stipulations for the organisations who receive
our support is that the money they receive must be used
to provide support the people who live in Cornwall. You
can find out more about these organisations and an
update on last year’s fund raising further on in the
Magazine.
This year’s Open Race saw a team called Three Skinnies
and a Couch become victorious as they finished with a
time of three minutes and 26 seconds, a very good time
considering the wet conditions. The Ladies Race was
won for the first time by annual returnees, The Fairbank
Belles, with a time of 1.54, Team James won the 16 and
under category, the 12 and under title was won by The
Bale Pushers and the 8 and under victors were Lightning
Strikes.
In the years since the first Bale Push began there have
been many developments to make the evening safer and
more enjoyable for spectators and competitors alike.
Many months of careful planning meetings take place,
occasionally with pint and sandwich in hand [our thanks
to the support of our local pubs – always technically
known as ABC – i.e. Albion, Bowgie and Cornishman!]
before the event to ensure that we have thought of
everything.
Crantock Bale Push is great fun, with excitement and
healthy competition for all ages, while also raising a
great deal of money for important Cornish and local
charities. We offer our sincere thanks to all the teams, the
spectators and last, but not least, our team of more than
50 helpers who were soaked to the skin!
The Course needs to be checked and so it complies with
legal requirements [you may have noticed on the days
before the event our Committee members roaming the
village cutting back overgrown branches and filling in
potholes [especially on Poor Man’s Lane] and our team
now includes both a Health and Safety Officer and a Road
Closure specialist.
The manner in which the original event has grown has
surpassed the expectations of its founder members and
the money raised by the event now exceeds £84,000. We
are now in our sixteenth year and our event has gone
from strength to strength. We raised £800 in our very first
year and the aim of the event has always been to raise
money to support and enrich the lives of others within our
local and wider Cornish community.
Much of our revenue is provided by the 130 individuals
and companies who sponsor and advertise in this
Magazine [we are hugely grateful to them]. However, our
fundraising total does not include the monies raised
during the evening by the organisations that have their
stalls on site or the monies raised by individual teams
who have been sponsored to take part. Besides providing
an enjoyable evening for all concerned; the evening does
have serious intent and that is, of course to raise money
to support others within our local and wider community.
We have been hugely fortunate over the years to have
had excellent BALE STOPPERS - Father Morley held this
role for many years and he handed over the role to Father
Jeremy. Father Jeremy moved from Crantock Parish, so
the Rev’d Hilary and her husband Brian have made it to
the “Starting Line” team [they must have enjoyed last
year so much that they are back for more!!]. Our BALE
STOPPERS with their good humour and involvement on
the evening are pivotal to the safety and enjoyment at the
start and finish line. They both successfully “double up”
as prize presenters during the evening and have appeared
in what must now be hundreds of photographs – sporting
their famous “Bale Stopper” shirts.
Since 2000 we have supported more than 52 different
organisations making donations to them ranging from
£100 to over £3000. Each year the selection of
organisations to support is very difficult and many hours
One of the most important aspects of the evening is, of
course the bales – which are fundamental to the success
of the whole event. This is where planning is crucial …
and it starts early in October with the planting of the
9
wheat seed in local fields – the seeds grow into fine
strong plants and must be harvested in early summer
and at harvest time are specially selected and wrapped
in netting at just the right time. Our bales are then stored
at a secret location to ensure they are in perfect condition
to be used on the second Friday in September. We have
looked at alternatives to netting to wrap the bales, and
maybe to have a layer of polythene between the straw
and the netting – but would that spoil the fun?
We look forward to seeing you at this year’s event and we
ask that you and your family have a happy time and are
vigilant at all times as the bales can roll up at any time!!!!
Our Marshals are responsible for the “on the course”
safety of spectators and competitors. We ask that all
competitors and spectators especially those with children
to be extra careful on the course and to obey the
directions of the Marshals [who you cannot miss in their
high visibility jackets!!!]. Please be aware that the
practice of trying to run ahead of the bale is very
dangerous and could result on serious injury … or worse.
It should also be noted that competitors should wear
appropriate footwear.
The most iconic part of the whole evening is of course
The Bale Man – he has been imitated but never equaled!
The arrival of The Bale Push Man causes great excitement
in various quarters of our community! To the outside
world he is usually first seen in late August at the
Crantock Junction just up from the Trevemper Roundabout
– however he is often spied on trips up Trevowah Road
and going to Cubert. Once the evening is over he seems
to vanish … however this is not the case! He reappears
for his annual photo shoot at The Bowgie in October
before starting his well earned rest.
We always have so many individuals to thank – too many
to name. The Committee with its months of planning, PJ
Print who put our Magazine together, our set up team
who start early on Friday morning getting the course
ready for the event, our helpers on the night and the
Saturday clean up team have a grim task but complete it
with good humour and smiles.
Our merchandise range is available to order from The
Cornishman and will be on sale on the night. We are also
delighted to announce that our 2016 Bale Ale has been
brewed, bottled and is already being sold in The
Cornishman and will be available to purchase on the night.
The popularity of the event has increased dramatically
over the years. We have many teams who return year
after year along with their supporters. The date for the
Bale Push is put in many calendars so that competitors
and spectators from further afield can plan their holidays
so not to miss the evening. The Village Hall Car Park is
usually bursting at the seams with all kinds of transport
and the Village Hall Committee who always “man” the
Car Park have a very busy time in the early evening
getting the vehicles neatly parked and the spectators
directed to the centre of the village where all the action
is. Our visitors are always greeted by the sounds of a
local band and the smell of our barbeque and delicious
pasties. The Committee members are delighted that
Crantock Bakeries have kindly agreed to sponsor us
again this year.

disruption to their evening once a year.

This Year We Are Supporting...
As many of you will know we always support
Cornish based charities, organisations and
individuals. We feel it is important that all as
the money is raised in Cornwall it should
made available to help Cornish people. As
there are so many good causes to support it
is always difficult to make a final decision
and this year has been no exception!
However, for the 2016 Bale Push we have
chosen Cornwall Hospice Care [in memory of
Father Morley], Motor Neurone Disease
Association [Cornwall Branch] and Help Izzy
Walk as our main organisations. We will of
course be making our usual donations to
Crantock SLSC and Holywell SLSC and other
local organisations.
Here is a little information about
each one….
Cornwall Hospice Care is a leading
independent Cornish charity providing
specialist care free of charge, to patients with
life limiting illnesses aged 18 and over. The
nursing teams provide this care at two
hospices, Mount Edgcumbe Hospice in St.
Austell and St Julia’s Hospice in Hayle, in
Cornwall’s hospitals, care homes and in the
community. They also care for people in their
own homes. It costs £8.4 million a year to run
Cornwall Hospice Care, but only 16% of this
is funded by the health authority, and that
money pays for just 86 days of care. We
therefore have to raise 84% of funds from
voluntary sources.
Hospice Care is available to people with
complex symptoms 24 hours a day, 7 days a
week. The highly trained specialist teams
deliver compassionate hospice based care
which can’t be provided anywhere else in
Cornwall. All the money raised, stays in
Cornwall for the benefit of local people.
Cornwall Hospice Care is also one of the
main providers supporting the Peninsula
Medical School curriculum in Cornwall. The
generosity of the public is vital and we
applaud the tremendous support that the
Crantock Bale Push has given in the past and
are so grateful that we have been selected
this year to benefit from what has become
one of Cornwall’s most successful local fund
raising events.

Fund Raising continued...
MOTOR NEURONE DISEASE ASSOCIATION
The Cornwall Branch of the Motor Neurone Disease
Association has the sole aim of serving all those in the
county who are affected by Motor Neurone Disease
(MND). This includes people with MND, their carers,
family and friends, in fact anyone who has been
touched in some way by the disease.
These
provide
an
opportunity to meet with other people living with the
disease, and to share experiences and ideas.
Fundraising and raising awareness are also very
important aspects of branch activities, and we
organise several events throughout the year which
are well supported.
MND is an incurable condition that paralyses the
muscles leaving people unable to do the everyday
things the rest of us take for granted. Walking, talking
and swallowing may become virtually impossible, yet
the mind and senses remain mainly intact.
The Cornwall Branch is completely run by volunteers.
We are always interested in hearing from people who
can help with events or who want to get involved with
running the branch.
We liaise with health and social care professionals
such as Speech Therapists, Occupational Therapists
and the medical profession.

Our branch holds regular support meetings and
lunches for people living with MND and their carers.
HELP IZZY WALK
spasticity, Izzy will be
given the chance to
improve her range of
movements and, with
intensive physiotherapy,
strengthen her muscles,
hopefully giving her the
opportunity to walk.
Help Izzy Walk was set up by local parents Mike and
Ursula Pearce to raise money so that their daughter
Izzy can have SDR, a life changing spinal operation
which will hopefully help Izzy walk. Mike and Ursula
along with family and friends have had a manic 5
months fundraising to raise funds for Izzy.
Izzy is one of identical twins and she has Cerebral
Palsy Spastic Diplegia. This means she has increased
muscle tone and her legs are constantly stiff
(spasticity), she suffers from pain and also has
difficulty with leg movements, coordination and
balance.
The results from SDR are simply incredible and
children that were told they would never walk, are
not only walking, they are running, jumping and
dancing too.
This operation could potentially mean the difference
between Izzy walking independently and her being in
a wheelchair for the rest of her life.
Because of her condition, Izzy cannot walk or even
stand unaided.
Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) is a life changing
complex spinal operation, the only surgical procedure
that permanently reduces or eliminates stiffness and
spasticity in the legs.
Spasticity causes a lot of pain, and over time,
shortening of muscles and tendons, joints
contractures and bone deformities.
This is not a cure for Cerebral Palsy but without the
Izzy is a bright, happy, cheeky 6 year old girl, who
loves to sing and dance. She’s a pupil at St. Columb
Major Academy. All her family want is to give Izzy the
best chance to be able to run around with her twin
sister Gabby (her best friend!) and be able do all the
things we all take for granted.

18th September First day of the Rugby World Cup.
Coach Lancaster has decided to get rid of all the
players who set a bad example to the children
watching, so Dylan Hartley has been dropped, I doubt
we’ll hear from him again. Due to my charity work I’m
seen as a good example so have been asked to join as
the squad as an advisor. It’s a good move because I’m
full of ideas already, young Burgess really looks like a
centre to me.
should probably work some extra hours to clear the
queues. To be fair, how could I possibly know I was in
the middle of a strike? I think I may be the first person
in history to be banned from the NHS.
21st January An inquiry has found that the murder of
Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko was ‘probably’
approved by President Putin. Also in the news were
‘probable’ locations for bears to go to the toilet and
the ‘probable’ religion of the Pope.
15th October A new five pence charge has been
introduced on plastic bags, I have got myself a straw
basket to carry my shopping in. I’m going to save up
the money I save and have a bet that Leicester City
will be relegated.
14th February My new television series is due to
broadcast on BBC3 tomorrow, I don’t think there are
enough talk shows on the TV so it should be a hit.
16th February Frustrated to find BBC3 is going off
air! I’m sure the viewing figures of seventeen for my
show were going to improve so that can have nothing
to do with it. The Channel is going on-line only so I’m
not going to record any more shows until I get a better
offer. I’ve got Paul Daniels and Ronnie Corbett booked
for the next one, I’m sure they’ll wait.
22nd October A very friendly General from Nigeria
has contacted me, he has several million pounds to
deposit and is willing to give me a cut, all I need to
know is pass on my phone number and my account
password. Easy money.
23rd October Cannot use my phone today, Talk Talk
have been hacked and thousands of people have had
their account details stolen. Some idiot has really
dropped the ball on security there.
19th March England rugby team have won a grand
slam, beating all the other teams in the Six Nations.
I’m finding it hard to enjoy to be honest. Eddie Jones,
the new coach, came in and immediately sacked me
from my advisory role. Even now I’m a bit concerned
that Jones doesn’t really know what he’s doing, as I
left he was shouting that I should ‘ruck off,’ I’m pretty
sure it should be ‘ruck over.’
23rd November Prime Minister Cameron is in France
for discussions with President Hollande. I was in town
so I went along to the venue, to smooth the way for
Mr Cameron, I decided to present Mr Hollande with a
one of the new commemorative coins on his behalf.
He threw it away and stormed off I’m not sure why I
would think he would very interested in the Battle
of Agincourt.
29th March I took a short holiday to Egypt to get over
my sacking, on the plane home I was sat next to a
man who was very upset, he was getting divorced but
wanted to get back together with his wife. I advised
him he needed to make a grand gesture to get her
attention, I think trying to hijack the plane was a bit
excessive but I got a pretty unusual selfie from the
situation, so on balance, I think I came out on top.
15th December After literally days of training, I was
all set to be the first Bale man in space, I was just
approaching the Launchpad when we discovered that
we couldn’t find a space helmet in round bale size.
The Russians told me I couldn’t fly without it so I’ve
been replaced by a man called Tim Peake. Without me
on board no-one will be interested in a run of the mill
space mission, I doubt it will even make the news.
15th April I have been doing some record keeping
and have been looking at past Bale Push results. I
have had explained to me some of the team names
from previous years. Frankly, you people disgust me.
12th January Visited hospital today for the annual
cleaning of my metal pole, you don’t want a dirty pole
where that goes I can assure you! There were loads of
people waiting outside the hospital, you’ve never seen
a queue like it, there were even news crews present
to cover it. I mentioned to a TV crew that the doctors

support to the Remain campaign, my opinion carries
a lot of weight in Crantock you see. I have decided not
to become involved, I don’t need the hassle and
England are only playing Iceland so there is no chance
of us being out of Europe anytime soon.

Where it All Started
The concept of the Bale Push in Crantock came from the seed of an idea which grew and grew! Farmer Chris
Eustice discussed it with a few locals in various hostelries - The Treguth and The Old Albion to name but two.
The seed was sown and Chris harvested the idea, baled it and discussed it with John Richards who immediately
saw its merits! A fairly hilarious Test Push was
organised and four local gentlemen, namely Kittsy,
Casey, Millsy and Tim Eustice formed a team. Assisted
by flag-waving Jim Hardy and with Chris Eustice the
mobile marshal directing proceedings, and alerting any
unsuspecting passers-by, a Push was achieved around
the proposed circuit..........!
Three weeks later with the valuable assistance of local
sponsors and supporters BIG BALE PUSH 2000 was
organised. That first event raised over £800 for Halwyn
Parc and Crantock had a new annual local fundraising
event and the rest is history!
Our event has been copied with some degree of success in other parts of the Country but we
would have to say never bettered!

Father Morley Wills
Morley
The Bale Push Committee was
deeply saddened to hear of the
loss of our great supporter and
very first Bale Stopper, Father
Morley Wills.
Father Morley was Crantock’s priest
He was born in Fraddon, about 5 miles east
His first career was that of a nurse
Never did we think we’d have to help with
his hearse.
Father Morley came to Crantock in 1989, and
was involved in many aspects of village life.
When asked if he would like to become involved
in the Bale Push he jumped at the opportunity
and quickly became established as our “Bale
Stopper”. At the start of each event he would
bless the bale and loved being involved in hauling
the heavy bales into position. Part of his role was
to award the prizes – a task which he undertook
with his usual enthusiasm. Father Morley even
had a special T Shirt with “Bale Stopper” on the
front! In latter years, he was joined by Father
Jeremy and the two of them made a terrific
team. Members of the Bale Push Committee [old
and new] were honoured to be his pall bearers at
his funeral. His infectious humour and enjoyment
of the event was an inspiration to us all. A much
loved friend to so many.
A man of God, but also of fun
The priest with a pint, he was the one
A big man in all senses
An honest man, no pretences.
He loved our village, and we loved him back
We were proud of our vicar, our man in black
His first love, Mary, became his wife
Mary, family, God, Crantock…..
all parts of his life.

Crantock Village
The parish name came from the 6th century Saint - CARANTOC, who built a small
oratory which, in time, became a renowned College of Priests. This was a major
centre of religious administration and learning in Cornwall, until it suffered under the
Dissolution of the Monasteries by Henry VIII. The Norman building now St. Carantoc
Parish Church, was fully restored at the turn of the 20th century, and has some of the
finest woodcarving in the West Country. St Carantoc’s life story is portrayed in the
stained glass windows.
Large areas of the parish are in the ownership of the National Trust, including the delightful little cove known
as “Polly Joke”, and the “Round Orchard” in the centre of the village, which may have been the site of the
ancient Celtic chapel.
There are many interesting walks to enjoy within the parish: either around the headlands on the South West
coastal footpath, or over the rushy sand-dunes to the magnificent sweep of Crantock Beach, and especially
along the estuary of the River Gannel, which was a thriving port in the 15th century and is now a favourite haunt
of the walker, horse-rider and naturalist.
The coastal footpath skirts all along the west side of the parish. Walking from Crantock the path leads to a sandy
cove called Porth Joke known locally as Polly Joke. Its name comes from the old Cornish words for ‘Jackdaw
Cove’ ....’Pol-Lejouack’. This cove is entirely surrounded by National Trust land and virtually unchanged over the
centuries. Further along the coast path is the village of Holywell, with a larger sandy beach at Holywell Bay.
Crantock Beach is a busy place all year round with families and individuals enjoying the beautiful beach and
leisure activities available to visitors and locals alike, and of course the beach is popular all year with the surfing
fraternity. The summer ferry takes passengers over from Crantock Beach to the Ferry Boat House East Pentire
the Fern Pitt Café Established in 1910, the Fern Pit Cafe and Ferry is a family run business based on the River
Gannel. The Ferry Boathouse is situated on the River Gannel below the cafe. Access is via the privately owned
steps which are open to the public between 10am and 6pm during the open season (end May - mid September)
or from Crantock Beach. The Boathouse is over 100 years old and houses the ferry and rowing boats during the
winter months.
At the left hand side of the beach, low tide reveals a carving into a rock, featuring a picture of a woman’s face,
and the inscription ‘Mar not my face but let me be, Secure in this lone cave by the sea, Let the wild waves around
me roar, Kissing my lips for evermore’
The story goes... In the early 20th century a woman was horse riding along Crantock
Beach. She and her horse got cut off as the tide came in and the rough seas swept
them away drowning them both. Her distraught lover carved a poem into a rock, in a
cave on the beach, along with a portrait of his lost love and her horse. The carvings are
said to be the work of a local man Joseph Prater.
Crantock, with its picturesque cottages and peaceful atmosphere, offers many
attractions to the visitor, including our Post Office and local Stores, an art and craft shop in the centre of the
village next to the Cosy Nook Tea Gardens and two public houses – the Cornishman and the Old Albion.
If you follow the road down to Crantock Beach you will find another little gem – the galley and art shop Seadrift
- owned and run by Victoria Bampfield – Hammond.
If you head out to West Pentire [either by walking along the beach or the coastal path or by road] you will see
the Crantock Bay Hotel now newly refurbished and almost ready to open with its apartments, leisure facilities
and Bistro. A little further along you will spy the ever popular Bowgie Inn – with its magnificent sea views, it is
an excellent place to eat lunch and rest awhile. Behind the Bowgie you will find Lorna Wiles’ Gallery – with
Lorna’s beautiful paintings and local artists work it is certainly a location to visit. This year we also have two
new Tea Rooms - Helvas on Beach Road and Highfield@Crantock just by the Village Hall.
Our village is a busy one with activities happening most days in the Village and Memorial Halls. We have an
annual Jazz in the Parc on the first Tuesday in August and of course the Bale Push on the second Friday in
September.
You will be made warmly welcome in our village and hope that you enjoy your visit and will want to return year
after year.

is always held at The Bowgie Inn

official engagement for the Bale
Push Man before he is put away
until the following year. We invite
helpers, members of the Press
and representatives of the chosen
organisations to meet up for a drink,
buffet and short cheque presentation.
Andy and Sally always provide the
venue and buffet for us – and we
thank them for their continued support. The Presentation Evening provides to thank all those who have
helped us on the night and it is a great opportunity to hear more about the organisations and how they are
use the money to support others. Despite the awful weather on the evening we raised an amazing sum of
almost £9000 and the Committee is very grateful for the generosity and support of our wonderful sponsors
amongst many local businesses, all the helpers who turn up each year to lend a hand, and of course our
very supportive Crantock residents.

Last year’s Crantock Bale
Push very generously
donated a fantastic sum of £2,500 to Wired Cornwall.
Wired is a charity for the rehabilitation of people who
have had strokes, acquired brain injury and brain
tumours based at Trevissome Business Park, Chiverton
Cross. This amazing sum has made such a difference
to all these sufferers who have had an instant and
traumatic life changing experience. From the publicity
side of the Crantock Bale Push, we have had new
patient referrals and with the money we have been
able to secure the remaining bits of disability
equipment that we needed. This was in the form of a
fixed pedal cycle to aid leg mobility when learning to
walk again and an all-purpose wheelchair which
remains at the centre and can be used by any patient
transferring from a car to the centre which makes it
much easier for the carers. We have also added to our
arts materials and woodwork tools. This has given a
wonderful boost to the patients using the equipment
and enjoying art therapy. Being totally self-funding
from the start this was so very much appreciated by
the patients (ranging in age from 16 years to 80 years),
the carers and the therapists at Wired.

As with all charities, we in The Mid Cornwall branch
of Parkinson’s UK are obliged to plan a year of
activities in advance and set a budget to ensure we
have sufficient funds to fulfil our obligations. After
much head scratching each year we agree our
priorities and allot funding.
What a dream it is then to know that one of our most
important commitments was fully funded by the
donation received from The Crantock Bale Push.
People with Parkinson’s very often become isolated:
not wanting to look and sound different in public and
not being able to get to events even if they wanted
to. Our bimonthly newsletter has reaches into the
homes of over 500 people, keeping them in touch
with local events, developments in treatments,
fundraising opportunities and changes to NHS
services.
So far this year we have posted 1,500 newsletters
and frequently have received letters of thanks from
those who receive them. Our donation from the Bale
Push has enabled us to expand editions when
necessary with worrying about the additional cost
and to print and include additional material for
inclusion in each envelope.

CRANTOCK MEMORY CAFÉ
Over the last 12 months the Memory
Cafe has continued to establish its
valuable role in village life. At our
regular meetings we aim to provide an interesting
and varied programme of social activities for those in
our local communities suffering from some degree of
memory loss, with their carers.
Support from the Crantock Bale Push has enabled us
to broaden our horizons and range of resources, and
to extend our meetings from once to twice every
month. Activities this year have included excursions
to the Hall for Cornwall and for a cream tea, and
welcoming visitors to the cafe including local
musicians and artists, local historians, a dog
obedience team and even a display of classic cars!
Puzzles and games are always popular, and
everything we do aims to help stimulate the memory
and provide opportunities for a relaxed social
afternoon amongst friends. Always included, of
course, is a delicious afternoon tea generously baked
and provided by local supporters.

the opportunity to be a part of your successful yearly
fundraising event last year.

variety of events that has been beneficial and
rewarding for both parents and children. Within the
last year, we have enhanced and improved our
support for parents on a monthly basis. These
events provide opportunities to connect and
support others in similar circumstances. Our latest
Siblings day at Cardinham Woods was a great
success, aimed at siblings to express themselves,
building self –esteem, confidence and friendships.
The donation received has made a big difference
too many families in Cornwall and will continue for
foreseeable years.

The Club was so grateful for
the donation.
We have continued to grow and this year have
concentrated on breaking the national issue in
sport of drop off rates in teenagers in sports.
Therefore, we applied for a Sports England Grant
and were successful in obtaining this which
allowed us to spend money on equipment that
would keep the teenagers interested and
participating. This grant did not cover everything
we needed as we had to also contribute a
percentage. Therefore, we have put the bale push
donation towards the outstanding items and
purchased 5 sets of kayak paddles, life jackets and
4 sets of fibre glass racing flippers. This equipment
is excellent the teenagers love it.
Hopefully it will go a long way to keeping our local
kids in sport and then theirs to follow.

just how successful your Bale Push has become.
Our club has grown a lot over the last ten years, we
now have a waiting list and over 200 members, but
it’s thanks to organisations like yourselves, which
means we can invest into new surf lifesaving
equipment. All our members love and support the
Bale Push, and long may you continue on the wave
of success you have created.
We have spent all summer training seven junior
members to become lifeguards, we are constantly
training the nippers to ensure the local community
youngsters have an understanding on how to be
safe in the sea.
All of the members who run the club are volunteers
and every single penny is invested into new
equipment or the general running of the club.

donation, we spent it on buying new nipper boards,
it’s never taken for granted. Thank you all for the

by the Village Hall
has once again be
used in improving the Play Equipment area.
When the resident football team decided to move
to an alternative ground that resulted in goal posts
and nets etc being taken away. As such we had no
facility for goal posts or netting which we felt
would be wanted and used by the local children.
The Donation was a major contribution that allowed
us financially to install ball-stop fencing and goal
posts to the football amenity area. The Fencing also
stretched to behind the basketball area as well
enabling the whole of the play area to become fully
integrated. The Total Cost of the project was
£3285.
Once again the Village Hall Committee would like
to thank the Bale Bush Committee for considering
us as a recipient for their donations. We know the
facility is now being used for the benefit of the
village.

If you think competing is exciting, try being a spectator!
This is an event that warns participants: “Round
Bales are very heavy and can cause serious injury.”
Billed as one of”Cornwall’s craziest fund-raising
events,” it lives up to its description. From teams
of children racing with small bales, through to
the Open event, it’s fun all the way. Every year
supporting different charities; every year raising
more money and attracting more competitors from
further afield than before.
There’s a sense of anticipation as you wait for
the next team to appear on your chosen part of
the circuit, the noise slowly increasing as they
approach. However, this is Crantock Bale Push,
not a Grand Prix. The noise is the dull thumping of
feet accompanied by the high pitched shrieking of
teams shouting instructions to each other as they
make their way around the circuit. Time is short in
this race and decisions need to be made quickly.
Mistakes have consequences and everyone wants
to win.
Approached from a long downhill stretch of Beach
Road, the complex skills required to navigate
the turn into Poor House Lane offers the biggest
challenge for competitors and pure entertainment
for the spectator. Even the strongest of participants
who dare to misjudge this turn can seal the fate of
a team mate. This usually involves being catapulted
into a hedge. On a good evening’s spectating
the right turn isn’t made at all and the tractor
strategically positioned to prevent 420lbs of Bale
running out of control down to the beach car park,
serves its purpose well.
In contrast, much gentler spectating can be found
at the start & finish point, conveniently located
between two pubs. Here enthusiasm and celebration
can be found in abundance, accompanied by a
humorous commentary and results service. In the
centre of the village there are lots of stalls to look at
with food, drink and lovely things to buy.
Crantock Bale Push is unique. Set In the most
beautiful of villages, it’s always entertaining. Of
course if the excitement of spectating becomes
tiring, you can always visit one of the pubs for a
pit-stop. You’ll find numbers of competitors already
there re-charging!
