“Do not desire to be other than you are, but desire
to be very well what you are!”
... Welcome to Father Daniel M. Nganga from the
Diocese of Kitale, in north west Kenya, in East Africa, who joins us today, at all Masses, to seek support for his young Diocese.
... Father Dan is one of a family of ten, five boys
and five girls. Another of his brothers is also a
priest. Father Dan entered the seminary in 1992
and was ordained a priest on October 12, 2002. He
has been a Pastor in Sirende and Chepareria in Kitale Diocese. ‘Karibu!’
... The Diocese of Kitale was established in 1998.
It’s first bishop, Most Rev. Maurice Crowley, is a
classmate of Father Brian, and has served for 41
years as a missionary priest in Kenya.
... The Diocese of Kitale consists of the Trans Nzoia
and West Pokot areas of Kenya, with a population
of 1.9 million, and a vast area of 11,000 sq. kms.
... Trans Nzoia is famed for it’s rich arable lands,
producing most of Kenya’s maize, but, today, because of the vagaries of climate, the world economy
and local markets, is suffering from widespread unemployment and poverty.
... West Pokot is a vast mountainous semi-arid region on the edge of the Turkana desert. Nomadic
pastoralists graze cattle and goats throughout the
interior, and many more live in small remote villages. The main challenges are access to health resources, education and the availability of water.
Father Dan’s most recent parish was in West Pokot.
... There are 23 parishes and over 408 outstations
in the Diocese, served by 57 native priests and 18
missionary priests, 8 religious brothers, 66 religious sisters, and 392 village catechists.
... There are 66 students for the priesthood in the
Major Seminary and 120 in the Minor Seminary.
... Last year there were over 6,510 Baptisms, 2,780
First Communions, and 1,502 Confirmations, and
ongoing religious formation in each outstation.
... The Water Program aims to improve community self-development and self-management by responding to community water needs. Spring protections, boreholes, and rainwater harvesting
tanks help to ensure year round sources of water.
... The Diocese manages 2 hospitals, 11 Health
Programs, the Kitale AIDS Program, a program
for children with disabilities, and the Saint John
Bosco Rehabilitation Centre for Street Children.
August 11, 2013
... 21 Nursery schools, over 200 Primary schools,
and 35 High schools are sponsored by the Diocese!
... The Diocese has a vibrant Justice and Peace
awareness agenda, and a strong Women and Gender Development campaign, aiming to improve the
profile and quality of life for women in Kenya.
... Father Dan is continuing his studies in development in Washington, DC. Please give generously to
his appeal today on behalf of his Diocese.
... ‘Fiesta De Las Flores 2013’ is this Saturday
(17), from 4:00pm to 10:00pm, and on Sunday (18)
from 8:00am to 8:00pm. There’ll be live music,
great food, games for the children, and more!
... The Saturday (17) entertainment line-up includes, Fleetwood Max, featuring Saint John School
music teacher, Ann Heller, Weis Guys Jazztet and
Groupo de Danza Xinachtil. Don’t forget your
dancing shoes! Lots of fun for all!
... On Sunday (18), there is superb entertainment
all day, including our Polynesian Dancers, a fabulous Mariachi Band, The Jazzkatz, The Jenks Band
and our own Happy Tappers, and much more!
... And there is delicious food all day, to suit every
taste, Breakfast Burritos, ‘Brandt Beef’ Burgers,
Carne Asada, Tacos, Hot Dogs, Ice Cream, and lots
of refreshments to wash them down!
... Our Grand Drawing has a first prize of $5,000, a
second prize of $2,500, a third prize of $1,000 and a
fourth prize of $500. Tickets are $2 each or a book
of 30 for $50. That’s next Sunday (18)!
... Our contributions last weekend (4) reached
$16,841.00 with 408 families using parish envelopes. A further $4,908.00 was contributed ‘online’.
... 103 families gave $3,058.00 to our Building
Fund last weekend!
... An Organizational Meeting for our forthcoming
Parish Ministry Fair is this Wednesday (14) at
7:00pm in the Leucadia Room. All our groups, organizations and ministries are urged to be attend.
... Pope Pius XII in 1950 proclaimed the dogma of
the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, not
only as a privilege for Mary, but as Pope Paul VI
wrote, “as the destiny of all those whom Christ has
made his own.” Our celebration, too!
... The feast of the Assumption is this Thursday
(15). It is a holyday of obligation. Masses are at
8:00am, 10:30am, 6:00pm and 7:30pm (Spanish).
... “Go out to all the world and tell the Good
News!” We are all missionaries!

PADRE JESUITA ALBERTO HURTADO
Hace casi 2000 años, Jesús
declaró que “los zorros tienen
guaridas, y las aves del cielo sus
nidos; pero el Hijo del hombre
no tiene donde reclinar la
cabeza”.
