Nicole, the granddaughter of a
Holocaust survivor, wanted to ensure
her children understood the significance
of being Jewish. Immersive experiences
like Jewish overnight camp for her three
kids to a summer camp is expensive
and would have been prohibitive for
her family. That’s when Nicole and
her husband reached out to Jewish
Federation of Palm Beach County.
“Without Federation, we couldn’t have
done it,” Nicole said. “The scholarship
allowed us to send our kids to overnight
camp. Now, our kids teach us the
prayers, songs and celebrations. They
understand and are excited about what
it means to be a Jew.”

Born and raised in St. Petersburg, Russia in the years
after the fall of communism, Masha, 23, grew up with
limited understanding of – or pride in – her Jewish
identity.
Masha discovered Lehava, an unique leadership
development program coordinated by Federation’s
partner, the American Jewish Joint Distribution
Committee (JDC). The program gave Masha the
opportunity to create a photo exhibit depicting
everyday life in Israel for her community to see.
Masha’s project – funded through Federation’s Palm
Beach-St. Petersburg partnership – made an impact
on the St. Petersburg community and became a
personal turning point for Masha. She now works in
the Jewish community.

“I wanted people to see what Israel is actually like and
to help break long-standing preconceptions about

AND RESCUE PEOPLE IN NEED.
Caryn, who lives in Singer Island
needed day-to-day services for her
elderly mother.
She learned that
homebound seniors could receive
kosher meals delivered right to their
doors through Federation’s Senior
Subsidies program. Caryn did not just
utilize the program, she took it into her
own hands and began volunteering
to deliver meals to hundreds of
homebound seniors in the area.
Through the program, Caryn does
much more than deliver food to people
who spend most of their time alone –
she brings them companionship.

fulfill this guiding principle of Federation
– wherever there is a Jew in need.”

“If I didn’t visit and deliver meals, they
would not have any interaction with
the outside world,” she said. “They
thank me when I leave. But I have
them and this program to thank for
giving me the opportunity to improve
homebound seniors’ quality of life.”

KOSHER FOOD
PANTRY IN PALM
BEACH COUNTY
The Zolodyv family had long been dreaming of moving to Israel,
where they could live more openly as Jews than they could in
eastern Ukraine. For two months – amid bombing and ground
battles outside their home – the family hid in their basement,
sleeping in potato crates and surviving on onions and barley. They
periodically emerged to search for batteries so their son could
read and continue his Hebrew studies.
Federation’s overseas partner, The Jewish Agency for Israel
(JAFI), found the Zolodyvs and offered a safe path out of war-torn
eastern Ukraine and into Israel. JAFI provided them with housing
and Hebrew classes while they established themselves in their new
hometown, Karmiel. Today, their son is in a high school program
for new olim (immigrants to Israel) supported by Federation’s
Annual Campaign.
“We received such a warm welcome from members of the Jewish
Agency,” the family said. “We were very touched by the concern
of total strangers, people wanting to help and support us.”

When Phillip of West Palm Beach was
17, he embarked on a trip to Israel with
Bonim Chaim, a program of Federation’s
Partnership2Gether. Phillip’s trip was
subsidized through Federation’s Gift of
Israel voucher, awarded to more than 200
teens each year. For nearly one month,
Phillip volunteered with at-risk immigrants,
explored the rich history of the country and
lived with an Israeli family in Federation’s
partnership region.
“Being in Israel made me realize that
Judaism, for me, is not only a religion,” he
said. “It is a way of life.”
When Phillip returned home, he spoke
about his experiences at Federation’s
community memorial for the three innocent
Israeli boys who were kidnapped and killed
while Bonim Chaim was in Israel. Today,
Phillip continues to embrace his role as
an advocate for Israel with Federation’s
Young Ambassadors program and as
president of his high school’s Jewish
Student Connection club.

2015 Women’s Philanthropy Campaign Chair
Hope, an eighth grader at Arthur I. Meyer Jewish
Academy, connects with students in Israel on a regular
basis. At the school’s state-of-the-art new home in Palm
Beach Gardens, students Skype and exchange letters
with their Israeli counterparts.
Hope will travel with her class to Israel, an opportunity
offered each year to Meyer Academy’s eighth graders. She will finally meet – in person – the Israeli students who
she’s connected and shared experiences with over the
years through our community’s many school twinning
opportunities.
“Meyer Academy allows us to become friends with kids
our age around the world,” says Hope. “Even if you are
a Jew not living in Israel, you can still be connected to
your heritage.”
Many of Meyer Academy’s innovative, global-minded
resources (like a replica of the Western Wall) were
made possible through Federation’s Tomorrow Today
Campaign: the reimagining, renovating and relocating of
key Jewish community resources. Tomorrow Today will
