LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
We had a great June, with a very successful Business After Hours at the Chamber office. We were so impressed
by the number of people who participated and who attended the event. The following day was our Chamber Golf
Scramble. This event was one of two fundraisers the Chamber has and we made more money this year than last. The
next day we had the City Wide Garage sale. There were 125 addresses that participated.
This month starts off with a Networking Luncheon on Tuesday, July 1. This sort of “speed-dating style” networking
opportunity is a great way to have some lunch (at Pizza Man) and meet several new people in only an hour. On July 4,
the spectacular fireworks will begin at the Tri-Township Park at dusk. The City of Troy is generous each year in
bringing those fireworks for all to see.
Our first Business After Hours of the month will be held on Thursday, July 10, at St. Paul Lutheran School/Church. They have added an
additional building and hope that everyone will come out to see it. The second July Business After Hours will be held on Thursday, July 17, at
the Westview Condos (formerly Sonny and Char’s). This event is co-sponsored by the Troy/Maryville Area Chamber of Commerce and the Collinsville Chamber of Commerce.
The first homecoming of the month will be held on July 12/13 in Maryville. The next weekend will be the St. Jacob Homecoming and
the following weekend will be the Troy Lions Homecoming. For information on all of the homecoming events, visit www.troycoc.com. There you

We are enjoying the summer at the Chamber office with six interns, four from SWIC and two from SIU-E. We have been able to give

COLLINSVILLE AREA RECREATION DISTRICT HAS MUCH
CHAMBER MEMBERS: HELP US CELEBRATE THE GINDLER BARN RAISING!
Collinsville Area Recreation District (CARD) will celebrate the re-assembly of the historic Gindler Barn with a kick-off ceremony
scheduled for 8 a.m. on Monday, July 7 at the Willoughby Heritage Farm and Conservation Reserve, located at 631 Willoughby Lane in Collinsville, Illinois.
Professionals with Trillium Dell Timberworks from Knoxville, IL., and the Timber Framers Guide from Massachusetts will work with
volunteers from July 7-19 at Willoughby Heritage Farm to restore the 19th century Gindler Barn to working condition. Come out and help us
celebrate the Gindler Barn and those who are making the re-assembly possible. For more information, call 346-7529.
HEAD TO HIGHLAND, IL. FOR SOME PEANUT BUTTER AND “JAM”
Collinsville Area Recreation District’s (CARD) Leisure Time Luncheons allow participants to get together with old friends and make
new ones at an interesting location. On July 11, participants will head to Highland, Illinois for the Peanut Butter & Jam Festival. On that day,
luncheon goers will meet at 10:30 a.m. at the CARD Activity Center, 10 Gateway Dr. in Collinsville, Illinois to board a passenger van that will
take them to Highland.
At the festival, visitors will enjoy live bluegrass music, various food vendors, and free popcorn, and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches! The van
will pick up participants to take them back to Collinsville at approximately 2:30 p.m. The Leisure Time Luncheon is for those 21 years and older.
Registration is $8 per person and is due by July 3. Participants must pay for their own food and beverages. Go for a jog and take a swim with

ANNUAL DASH AND SPLASH
Collinsville Area Recreation District (CARD) and Splash City Family Waterpark will hold its annual Dash & Splash 5K Run & Fun Walk
on Saturday, July 12, 2008. Dash & Splash is a fun opportunity to walk or run, and then cool off at Splash City!
The event begins at Splash City, 10 Gateway Dr. in Collinsville, Illinois, at 6 p.m. on July 12. Participants in the Dash & Splash will
travel on accurately measured and well marked flat, paved roads. Awards will be given to male and female participants who place first in the 5K
run for specific divisions based on age.
Registration for the Dash & Splash is $22 by July 1, and $27 after July 1 for all participants. Registration includes a T-shirt and
admission to the party at Splash City. The party includes free hamburgers, hot dogs, signature dishes from Applebee’s Neighborhood Bar &
Grill, live music and use of all the attractions at Splash City until the park closes at 10 p.m. Dash & Splash participants are welcome to bring
guests to the post-run/walk party. Guest prices are $10 for adults 17 years and over, and $7 for children three to 16. Children under 3 years
old are free. Swimming apparel is required to swim at Splash City.

CHILDREN ARE RUNNING AWAY TO JOIN THE CIRCUS AT CARD
Clowning around is totally accepted at the Circus Skills Camp through the Collinsville Area Recreation District (CARD)! Circus Skills
Camp with a “Splash!” is a five-day camp scheduled for 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on July 14-18 at the CARD Activity Center, 10 Gateway Dr. in Collinsville,
Illinois. The camp is open to children in first through sixth grade.
In the morning, campers will learn how to juggle by themselves and with a partner, walk on stilts, develop clown skills like plate spinning and flower stick twirling, and much more! During the afternoon, campers will spend time playing at Splash City Family Waterpark, located
next to the CARD Activity Center.
But learning tricks is nothing without an audience! On the last day of camp, students will show off their new circus skills for their family and
friends during a special performance. All campers are to bring a sack lunch, swimsuit, towel and sunscreen daily. Registration for the Circus
Skills Camp is due by 5 p.m. on July 7. Registration is $175 for residents in the CARD boundaries and $195 for residents outside of the district. Call 346-7529 for more information on any of the above items.

ARE YOU A SWIC ALUMNI?
ASSOCIATION SEEKS TO REUNITE BELLEVILLE JUNIOR COLLEGE ALUMNI
Southwestern Illinois College is searching for its alumni, especially those who attended during the early years when it
was known as Belleville Junior College.
According to Development Project Coordinator Susan Schultz, who is heading up the Alumni Association, records of the
whereabouts of alumni from those earliest classes are hard to find, but the College would like to reestablish relationships with
them.
While many of the students attending BJC were from Belleville, there also were significant numbers from the surrounding communities, making it even harder to find them now. BJC was founded in 1946. Enrollments were small, only 169 in the first
semester, with a high concentration of returning World War II veterans. The college was located on the high school campus,
with temporary buildings constructed to house classrooms, the BJC lounge, which was arguably the most popular location for
students, and some administrative facilities. Many classes were held in the high school’s classrooms, and most of the College’s
teachers also taught in the high school. The small student body and confined premises produced close friendships, according to
some alumni I’ve talked with about the search project,” Schultz said.
Those conversations have led Schultz to believe that those who are still in the area would welcome an opportunity to
reunite with their classmates. If you are a SWIC Alum, particularly from those early days, Susan Schultz would like to know

CARD IS CALLING ALL SCRAPBOOKERS FOR MONTHLY
GATHERING
Learn new techniques, meet new people, and focus on your craft!
Ever feel like there’s just not enough time in the day to finish
that scrapbook? Collinsville Area Recreation District (CARD) has
a solution! The second Friday of each month is all about scrapbooking during Scrapbooking Crops at the CARD Activity Center,
10 Gateway Dr. in Collinsville, Illinois.
From 6-11 p.m., scrapbookers ages 13 and up enjoy
uninterrupted time to work on their scrapbook. A consultant
from Creative Memories, an international scrapbooking company,
is always on hand to answer questions and demonstrate new
techniques. Attendees also enjoy dinner, beverages, chocolate
and prizes!
New to scrapbooking? No problem! Participants can
purchase albums, papers and stickers that evening. A selection
of scrapbooking tools are also available for everyone to use.
Just for the summer, the rates for Scrapbooking Crops have
been reduced! The cost is $10 for residents in the CARD
boundaries and $12 for residents outside of the district.
Attendees can pay at the door.
The summer Scrapbooking Crops sessions are scheduled
for July 11 and Aug. 8, but space is limited. Call 618.346.7529 to

Effective July 1, 2008 the minimum wage rate in
Illinois will raise to $7.75/hr for all regular employees. Failure to make this timely adjustment
could result in fines and penalties, so be sure to
make the appropriate changes. There are some
exceptions to this rule, which can be found by
visiting http://www.state.il.us/agency/idol/.
For future reference the minimum wage will
increase by an additional 25 cents in each of the
following years to $8.00 on July 1, 2009; and $
8.25 on July 1, 2010.

The Great Skate of Troy, Illinois will
be having a 4th of July Carnival on Friday, July
4 prior to the fireworks, at 4:00 p.m. The Carnival will have a Trampoline Bungie along with
other inflatables and games. Great Skate will
have hot dogs, snowcones, popcorn, slushes,
pretzels, cotton candy and much more. This is
a great opportunity for families to come out
and enjoy some games along with watching the
fireworks.
Along with the carnival at the Great
Skate there will be fireworks next door at
Tri-Township Park in Troy, Illinois at dusk.

Anderson Hospital celebrated the groundbreaking of its new Collinsville ExpressCare facility on Friday, June 27th. Anderson
Hospital representatives including Administration, Board Members and Auxiliary members gathered with Korte Construction, Johnson
Properties, Collinsville City Council Members, and Collinsville Mayor John Miller, to commemorate the occasion with a photograph.
Anderson Hospital President, Keith Page, addressed the crowd saying that everyone present played a part in making this facility possible. The
Collinsville Mayor thanked Anderson Hospital for choosing Collinsville as its destination for the second ExpressCare site.
The facility will mirror its predecessor located in Glen Carbon, Illinois. Collinsville ExpressCare will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
seven days a week, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on holidays. Physicians and nurses will treat patients with cuts, colds, fevers, sprains and other common
problems that are not life threatening.
Patients of all ages will be able to use the services, which will also include on-site lab draws and x-rays. ExpressCare services will be
coordinated with the patient’s primary care physician, or if required, a specialist on staff at Anderson Hospital. ExpressCare will be conveniently located at 1103 W. Beltline Road between State Routes 157 and 159. Construction of the 5,500 square foot facility is underway with
the center planned to open in early 2009. The total project cost has been estimated at $2 million dollars.
ExpressCare will be staffed with a board certified physician as well as support staff. It will have the latest radiology equipment including the
ability to electronically send images to Anderson Hospital to be interpreted by Radiologists on staff. Radiology and a full-service lab will also
be offered separately for patients needing only those services.

$500,000 CHALLENGE GRANT TO BREAK
GROUND ON FIRST HOSPICE HOME IN
SOUTHERN ILLINOIS
Hospice of Southern Illinois announced today that
the community has contributed more than $500,000 to
meet a matching challenge grant. The addition of these
funds pushes the total amount raised to more than 70
percent of the $7 million goal, the milestone allowing construction to begin early this fall on the first Hospice Home
in Southern Illinois.
“Thanks to the generosity of the anonymous donor,
as well as the residents and businesses that stepped up to
meet the goal, this Hospice Home will become a reality,” said
Bill Barlow, Hospice of Southern Illinois board chairman. “As
the first hospice home in Southern Illinois and the first
home serving a large rural population, there is an immediate
need for this facility.”
“We appreciate the support of our community, and
even the smallest donations will make an impact,” said Sandy
Wagner, co-chair of the St. Clair County Hospice Home campaign. “This truly is our communities’ Hospice Home, a peaceful place for our neighbors, friends and family to spend
their last days in their time of need.”
“This beautiful home will provide all of our families
with the dignity and quality of life they deserve during the
last stages of life,” says Barlow.
Founded in 1981, Hospice of Southern Illinois is a
freestanding, community-based hospice established as a
non-profit corporation that serves more than 1,500 patients
and their families in 27, mostly rural counties in Southern
Illinois. Hospice care offers patients and families emotional
and spiritual support combined with expert medical care, all
tailored to the patients’ wish to remain pain-free and alert
for as long as possible in a home setting or medical facility.

Local engineering and surveying firm Thouvenot, Wade & Moerchen, Inc. (TWM)
has hired two new structural engineering designers. David Holdener, Jr., of Columbia,
graduated from Missouri University of Science & Technology in May with a Master of
Science degree in Civil Engineering and a specialization in Structural Engineering. Before
pursuing his Master’s degree, Mr. Holdener spent two years in consulting. Amanda Wilson,
of West Frankfort, has graduated from Southern Illinois University – Carbondale with a
Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering and an emphasis in Structural Engineering.
She interned at TWM during the spring semester. Both employees will assist with the
structural design of buildings and bridges at the firm’s Waterloo branch office.
TWM congratulates employees Jeff Taylor, of Swansea, and Justin Venvertloh,
of Maryville, on passing the Principles and Practice of Engineering Exam to attain licensure
as Professional Engineers in the State of Illinois. Mr. Taylor is an engineer in TWM’s
Swansea Land Development department, while Mr. Venvertloh is a Land Development

Kyle Stein, Physical Therapist for Apex Physical Therapy, recently attended two classes to
continue his education. On April 26-27, 2008, Kyle attended “A Master Clinician’s Approach to Advanced Concepts in Evaluation and Treatment of the Shoulder” presented by North American Seminars
at the St. Anthony’s Medical Center in St. Louis. This course included lectures and lab sessions focusing on evidence based research regarding current concepts on examination, evaluation, diagnosis and
treatment of the shoulder. The second class sponsored by Motivations,“Sports Specific Evaluation
Treatment and Pathomechanics of the Shoulder,” was held May 3-4, 2008, at the Truman Medical Center at Lee’s Summit, MO. This course addressed ways to enhance an athlete’s performance and included the examination of the core/ hip/ pelvis.

The children’s parade includes floats made by kids “infant
to 7yrs.” Businesses and organizations are also allowed to participate in the float making, although they must include some children
and should also fit the theme.
The parade will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday and 6 p.m. on
Saturday. The route will be about a mile, circling around town, and
starting and ending at the Senior Citizen Center.
