A Note From the Assistant Principal
Gaga Pit
Gaga has arrived at Wheelers Hill Primary School! Gaga is a version of dodgeball that originated in Israel. Students
were previously introduced to the game at Camp Manyung in Year 4 and it was so popular that students wrote
persuasive letters requesting their very own pit to play in last year. Fortunately, we received a grant through
realestate.com.au, with support from the Linton family, and have been able to make it a reality.
It is a high-paced and exciting game that involves a large number of students. It encourages teamwork, physical
activity, communication and social interaction in an enjoyable and student-led environment.
This is just another activity for students to take part in at lunchtime and we continue to look for new opportunities
for students to be active, make new friends and most importantly to have fun!

Leader Local Grants
Thanks to everyone who voted for our Lego Club application in the Leader Local Grants. We have been invited to
attend the awards breakfast as we were among the top three voted ideas in our area! The breakfast will be hosted
by Peter Hitchener on May 4. Thanks also to Jo Prendergast who was the driving force behind the application
process. Fingers crossed we win and can put the $1000 grant to the creation of a Lego Club for junior students.

Introducing FIVE CENT FRIDAY!!!
Start looking around the house and car, in your hand bags, fruit bowls,
under the couch cushions and all the other places that 5c coins tend
to hide. Five Cent Friday provides a fun and easy way to raise funds
for our school.
How it works:
Each class will have a jar for students to put their 5c coins into during the week and it will be counted every
Friday. At the end of Term 2 the class that has collected the most 5c coins will win a prize.
All money raised will go towards our new Friendship Play Area.

Canberra Study Tour 2016
Australian War Memorial

When entering the Australian War Memorial, a wave of emotions flood you. This sacred place
is a place to remember, mourn, appreciate and learn. The War Memorial was a life-changing
visit for me as I realised many thousands of soldiers went to war knowing the ultimate price,
yet were not frightened by this, but more determined to serve their country well in hope it
would make a difference. I owe these soldiers my life because their sacrifice was not in vain. If
it were, Australia would not be in peace and harmony.
The Australian War Memorial was an inspiring experience for me and I would like to share my
knowledge in order to make others bow in respect to the Australian war soldiers. The
Unknown Soldier has a dome-shaped room all to himself as he represents all the dead
Australian soldiers. In addition, the Unknown Soldier was the only dead Australian soldier to be
sent back to Australia. Every other Australian soldier who made the ultimate sacrifice in the
wars, were scattered across the world, buried in the places they fought and died.
An Australian General in WW1 was captured by the enemies
and was put in prison. The General wanted to keep records
of what the enemies were doing, and to not be discovered
would be difficult. So as a result, the Australian soldier
unstitched a bit of his army boot and hid his journal there
and when he escaped the information was a great help to
the Australian soldiers. Trench foot was extremely disgusting
because it is an unsanitary disease that occurs when there is too much exposure of water and
mud to the surface tissue of a soldier’s foot. The foot blackens as the exposure has damaged
the surface tissue beyond repair. This usually results in death of the brave soldier as it spreads
across the body.
Personally, the visit to the Australian War Memorial has definitely
moved me. I am grateful every single Australian soldier’s sacrifice was
not wasted, as over 102,000 Australian soldiers died and if it weren’t
for them, I wouldn’t be here today. Those Australians who left their
beloved families to serve their country were brave and determined for
the future generations to live a free and safe life and I appreciate it. If I could go back in time
and tell those brave soldiers that we are gracious for their sacrifices, I would, because they
died for us without regret.
Parliament House
Security guards at the entrance! Holding a machine gun! Well the parliament
house is super important so it makes sense in a way.
6A had a guide who took us to the Senate, the House of Representatives and a
room that could be either a Senate or House of Representatives. We started off
waiting in a room while eating fruit straps which the Parliament House provided
for us.
Next, we entered the Senate which seats 76 people. We actually sat in their
seats! The other name for the senate is the Upper House. Some people don’t
like the names, upper and lower houses because they want to make people
believe that the rooms are equally important but the truth is the Senate is one
level above the House of Representatives.
6A went to the House of Representatives (the Lower House). The House of
Representatives has 150 representatives from around Australia. If someone
makes a bill it has to pass the House of Representatives or it will not be passed
to the Senate.
Afterwards, we entered a room that could be used as either the Senate or a
House of Representatives (it was a fake room with a fake mace) and we used it
as the House of Representatives although we didn’t have 150 people. We were
given a bill to argue about. We talked whether or not we should have
commercial advertisement during kids’ show times. Some people had to dress
up and a classmate had to hold a fake mace.
Sadly it was time to go back and leave the centre of Australian Democracy. We
had our thank you speech for our guide and we had a few final glances and
photos and went back on the bus.

Subscription Fee for 2016 Motion:
The fee for 2016 was discussed at the General Meeting and a consensus decided. The fee for 2016 has been agreed to
remain at $5.00.
School Disco
Disco is to be held in Term 2 on Friday 17 June.
No confirmed organiser has been appointed as yet. We will book the DJ this week to lock him in.
Grant Applications
Grant applications were brought up at the GM and a number of possible grants that the school could apply for were
discussed.
We are one of the 3 finalists for the grant from Leader newspapers for our Lego Club.
Results will be known in Early may at a Breakfast in the CBD
**Well done Jo Prendergast in nominating our school.
Election Cake Stall
Election Day 2016 cake stall was raised by Tracey White, if the election is called as early as July a subcommittee is to
be formed ASAP as this requires some planning. Approvals are required to be obtained to sell food from the local
council and approval for the event is required from school council.
Year Level Events
Years 1 & Years 3 met at Jells Park on the last day of the Term. Grades 2 met at Jells Park during the school
holidays. New events are being planned for this term. Keep in contact with your Year Level Reps for updates.
Second Hand Uniform:
A second hand uniform shop was held on Thursday 24 March at 1.30pm (last day of term). It was a successful
afternoon as many items were sold. If you have uniforms put in bags that you don’t know what to do with them.
Please bring them to school and place them in the blue bin outside the office. Every little item helps others.

VOLUNTEER CANTEEN REQUEST 2016
Hello to all Wheelers Hill PS families.
One of the factors that contribute to a school’s success is interested, involved parents.
Over the years, the assistance of parents within our school has significantly contributed to the welfare of the
students of our school.
Our school canteen continues to need the help of parents, particularly those who can join our canteen
volunteer team. (Did you know that our canteen is run by our school, with any profits generated are returned
to the school)?
Our Canteen can only continue to offer a quality service to our students if we have adequate reliable
assistance. We need your help. With nearly 500 students, our canteen Manager needs the help of several
volunteers each canteen day to assist provide healthy, enjoyable lunches to our students.
Do you think you could help?
Canteen duty is from 9am-10.30am Mondays, Wednesdays or Fridays for counting money and preparing
baskets or 11.30am-1.30pm on Mondays, Wednesdays or Fridays for lunch orders. Duties would include
assisting the canteen manager with preparation, heating and packaging of lunch orders.
No prior experience is necessary! The canteen manager will provide you with lots of help and assistance,
and will provide significant help until you feel confident.
All you need to do is wear an apron, follow some simple, common sense food preparation procedures.
Most of all you will have the pleasure of providing a wonderful, and much appreciated service to our very
hungry students. It’s Worthwhile seeing their happy smiling faces.
As always, our most sincere thanks go to the parents already on our roster. We cannot do it without you, and
are so grateful for your ongoing support.
