Dear Garden Tour Guest,
Welcome! We would like to thank you for coming to
our 2nd Annual Resorts in Bloom Garden Tour. We
are excited to share with you these spectacular gardens that belong to our local resorts who have lovingly
opened their doors to you, our supporters. It has been
a true pleasure to work with each resort owner and
have a chance to experience what incredibly gracious
hosts they are! And we hope that, in the future, you will
choose to patronize the businesses and sponsors who
are supporting our three charities through this special
event.

This tour promises to be a unique experience as it is
the only time of year that the resorts in West Sonoma
County open their doors and gardens for touring by the
public. We ask that you please respect the privacy of
the resort guests and remember that the resorts are in
full operation during this tour. Making this event even
more memorable, this is the second year the three largest health and human services agencies in the Russian
River area have joined together to bring awareness to
the critical services we provide: West County Health
Centers, West County Community Services, and River
to Coast Children’s Services. After the tour, please take
some time to learn more about our non-profit agencies
by visiting their websites. (www.wchealth.org; www.
westcountysevices.org ; www.rccservices.org )
We know you will enjoy this tour of the finest gardens
in West County with their historical landmarks, rare
plants, meditation gardens, cooking and master garden
presentations and much more. Take pleasure in the experience as you relax with friends and stroll leisurely
through these breathtaking gardens. Enjoy nature’s
most precious gifts…
Thank you for your support,

RCCS believes that all families, regardless of income, race, religion, national origin or geographic
location, have the right to safe, nurturing child
care based on an awareness of the principles of
developmentally appropriate practice. We also
believe that healthy, well-functioning family
units are vitally important for each child, the parents, and society in general. Therefore, we offer a
variety of family support services that, together
with child care and children’s activities, lead to
positive growth for children and their parents.
Mission Statement:
Our mission is to nurture the healthy development of children and parents in our community.
We offer resources, referrals and support to families and child care providers in western Sonoma
County.
We depend on community support to keep our
basic human needs, educational, enrichment, and
health & safety programs up and running.

Applewood Inn
Located near Guerneville, California in Sonoma County’s Russian River Valley, Applewood Inn Bed & Breakfast is on a
knoll in the shelter of towering redwoods. Guests rave about the accommodating service, soothing atmosphere, and the
earthy wine country cuisine served in the cozy restaurant built to recall a French barn.
This romantic inn has two distinct types of accommodations. Those in the original Belden House, where
cozy chairs around a river-rock fireplace encourage loitering in the lounge area, are comfortable but modest
in scale. The 10 rooms in the newer buildings are larger
and airier, decorated in sage green and terra-cotta tones
that recall a Mediterranean villa. Guests rave about the
accommodating service, soothing atmosphere, and the
earthy wine country cuisine served in the cozy restaurant built to recall a French barn.
Wine country accommodations don’t come any more
relaxing or romantic. Applewood is the perfect choice
for a honeymoon, anniversary, weekend getaway or extended wine country vacation.
Applewood Inn has been featured
in over 40 magazines, newspapers and on public television…is
awarded 3 stars by Mobil Travel
Guide, is a long-standing member
of Select Registry and is recommended by Zagat & Michelin for
exemplary fine dining.

Casa Panama
A majestic setting overlooking the ocean and scenic Russian River in Jenner. As you wander along winding paths to enjoy
the terraced gardens, rock walls, waterfall, footbridges across this acre of paradise, you will experience both the peace
and the drama of the ocean.
“Casa Panama” is a 4 bedroom, 3
bath vacation rental that sleeps
two to ten.
At Casa Panama the garden is
covering almost 1/3 acre in the
bird watching paradise of Jenner
with terraced rock walls and paths,

several decks for expansive views
of the river and coast. There are
hundreds of different species of
birds in the region and they seem

Highlands Resort
Highlands Resort, in the hills above Guerneville, is a ‘straight-friendly’ gay resort that has been welcoming guests since
the 1930’s. Surrounded by charming gardens and beautiful groves of redwood trees, visitors enjoy cozy cabins and our
very popular clothing optional pool. Highlands Resort invites you to tour the grounds, our outdoor massage area (in the
center of an ancient redwood grove) and enjoy samples of our famous muffins.
Naked People & Plants That Bite!
California Carnivores comes to the
Highlands with their FLESH EATING PLANTS!!! Ok, so it isn’t
YOUR flesh they want to eat, they
prefer bugs and stuff like that.
Direct from their “Little Shop of Horrors” in Sebastopol, Peter D’Amato
and his crew will be happy to answer
all your questions about plants that
bite. They are bringing lots of plants
and copies of Peter’s award-winning,
best-selling book The Savage Garden
to purchase.
So it is (probably) safe for you to wander our garden, maybe catch a little
all-over tanning at the pool and learn
all about carnivorous plants! Just in
case you are feeling hungery... we’ll
also be serving our famous muffins.

Event Guest Guidelines
RESORTS IN BLOOM
A Garden Tour for Charity
Privacy: Peek with permission. Please refrain from peeking in windows,
lounging on private porches, or taking your self-guided tour off the approved
paths.
Public Restrooms: Please make note of which resorts have public restrooms available and plan accordingly.
Pets: Four-legged friends should stay at home or in the car. While they
would love the garden, some gardens may not love their paws and noses.
Children: Your well-behaved little ones are welcome. A great time to practice walking, not running, using indoor voices, and saying please and thank
you a lot!
Smoking: Please honor that most resorts do not allow smoking on the
premises.
Parking: With limited parking available, patience and carpooling will be
welcome virtues during your tour. Please note any signs indicating where to
or where not to park.
Photos: We encourage you to photograph our regions lovely gardens –
however some of our resort guests may not want to end up in your photo
collection. Snap your photos with care.
Room Tours: most properties will be proud to showcase their rooms (if they
have vacancies). Please keep the rooms in their original pristine condition
and use the available public restrooms as necessary.
Cell phones: West Sonoma County is all about “good vibes” … please include your cell phone and turn it to vibrate.
Food and Beverage: We encourage you to enjoy a picnic or take advantage
of the amazing food and drink you’ll find along the tour path. Please ask
the innkeepers if you have questions about where to find or consume your
delectable treats.

the positive impact and deepen your journey to tranquility and renewal. Here you may meditate, relax, and

Ox and Oxherder | The garden is a 10-stage walk
through sculpture inspired by the Chinese Zen parable of the Ox and the Ox herder. A homespun picture
booklet that details this fascinating story is for sale in
the lobby.
Aromatic Chamomile | While in the garden, you can
lie down and rest in one of the three aromatic chamomile lawns. As you lay on the herb, the oils are crushed
forth by the weight of your body. The smell is divine
and the effect is dreamlike as this unparalleled form of
aromatherapy works its magic.

The Meditation garden was designed and built under the direction of Robert Ketchell, a renowned British horticulturalist who has studied landscape
design extensively in Kyoto Japan.
Currently chairman of the Japanese Garden Society (based in the UK) and
principle of Sansui Design, he is also an author, lecturer, film maker, and
Kyoto garden tourguide. Ketchell met Osmosis founder Michael Stusser in
Kyoto. The two dreamed of working together to create a garden that captured the spirit of the classic gardens of that magical Japanese city.

The Raford Inn
The Raford Inn Bed and Breakfast, a designated historic landmark, is for lovers, romantics and all travelers interested in
lodging at a truly unique place in time. This charming and inviting Victorian country manor Inn sits on a hill and presides
over a fertile, unpopulated, and unspoiled Russian River Valley. The Raford Inn is ideally located at a gateway to the
picturesque and abundant Sonoma County Wine Country near Healdsburg in Northern California.
Built in 1880, this three-story estate
manor house is an officially-designated
historic landmark. The authentic Victorian-era French Colonial architecture still
remains, including the original Queen
Anne accents. Raford Peterson’s family
lived here and worked the land for 100
years before it was sold, refurbished to
modern codes and converted into an Inn.
The original 1,300 acre property was once
mainly planted with hops. Now vineyards
prevail and the remaining four acres are
a protected sanctuary for a house that is
not merely a place to shelter travelers, but
is also a home where the spirit of congenial country hospitality lives on. Come...
enjoy the enclosed sunroom and wraparound veranda. Gaze through the towering palm trees across the grape vines and
step back into the 19th century.
Horticultural historian Bob Hornback will
be giving guided tours of the gardens he has
developed for the Raford Inn, on Saturday
and Sunday, at 2pm each day.
“Farther from the modern world than the eye
can see, yet only fifteen
minutes from everywhere, we of the Raford
Inn invite you to experience a warm and memorable visit to a time and
place that has not quite
yet gone by…”

Santa Nella House
This Russian River bed and breakfast, in the Sonoma Wine Country, is a Victorian farmhouse dating back to the 1870’s.
Built by a prominent physician as his residence, the property has been an olive oil mill, a winery, a speak-easy, a stage
coach stop and, since 1984, a bed and breakfast inn. Extensively renovated and modernized, the stately structure boasts
five bedrooms and five and half bathrooms.
Deeply rooted in history, this classic Victorian farmhouse was
built in 1870 from redwood trees felled and milled on site. A
prosperous San Francisco physician, Dr. Joseph Prosek, was
an immigrant from Bohemia and a good friend of the Korbel brothers from the same area of Europe. Dr. Prosek and
his wife Emma, purchased 200 acres along the Russian River,
across from the Korbel Vineyards, and built the family home
known today as Santa Nella House.
“…hosts Bob Reeves and Betsy Taggart, will take care of
you as if you were a long-lost friend, with homemade
pastries and evening wine and cheese offerings. They offer advice on the best area wineries, and their off-season
packages focus on romance, biking , canoeing, kayaking.”
They also built a sawmill and an olive oil press. They planted
olive trees, which did not flourish and later planted vineyards,
which fared much better. For many years the Santa Nella
Winery produced quality wines and vinegars.
... in the middle of nowhere ...
and at the center of everything!
— Midwest Air magazine
As the story goes, Dr. Prosek and Emma occasionally visit
the inn as friendly ghosts, dressed in their Victorian finery.
The Inn is listed in the book, The Haunted Inns of Northern
California.

Thank You
Sonoma County Supervisor, Efren Carrillo
I am pleased to welcome you, and express my gratitude to all the sponsors, attendees, resort owners, and many volunteers whose
work makes “Resorts In Bloom” possible.
Special acknowledgement is due to the generous resort owners who have agreed to open their gardens and inns to the touring
public for this fund raising weekend. Hopefully the individual character of the gardens and the wonderful western Sonoma County
springtime climate will continue to lure appreciative visitors here for many seasons to come.
Now, more than ever, our local community based organizations need our financial support…
and this is a great way to give back while enjoying the splendor that we enjoy in West County.
West County Health Centers, River to Coast Children’s Services and West County Community
Services (WCCS) are all vital institutions in our River area communities. The many health care,
children’s and social programs they provide for our families have been an essential part of the
community’s infrastructure for over three decades.
Please enjoy the bounty and beauty that West Sonoma County and all these lovely resorts have
to offer, and know that while you are enjoying this fun event, you are contributing to critical
community programs.
Efren Carrillo
Sonoma County Supervisor, Fifth District
Sonoma County Sheriff Elect, Steve Freitas
West County Health Centers, River to Coast Children’s Services and West County Community Services
are all so grateful for the generous support of our future sheriff Steve Freitas.
I am honored to be a part of this event supporting three critical charity organizations that provide
health and human services in West Sonoma County. This continues to be tough financial times
for these agencies, as more and more people need their help and less and less funding is available
to provide services. I want to thank each and every one of you for participating in this fundraiser
to support their good work.
From a law enforcement perspective, I view these agencies as important resources for keeping
people affected by poverty and disadvantage out of the criminal justice system. We see incredible
human suffering everyday caused by problems that access to health and human services could,
in many cases, prevent. All of us envision a brighter future for our children, a healthy environment, and a safe place to live….thank
you for working together to make that vision a reality for our community.
I invite you to enjoy the beautiful gardens of West Sonoma County highlighted in this program and I want to personally thank
you for supporting critical community programs for children, seniors, and families in need. While you relax and soak in the natural
beauty of our region, I encourage you to stop a moment and listen to the birds and take time to smell the roses.
