The Mission of Child Advocates—Denver CASA, otherwise known as Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) is to advocate
for the best interests of abused and neglected children in Denver Juvenile Court through the services of specially selected and
trained community volunteers from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Our vision is that all children will have a safe, nurturing
environment where they can thrive. Through no fault of their own, these children have been abused and neglected and now they
are scared, confused and living an uncertain life. CASA is central to fulfilling society’s most fundamental obligation by making sure
a qualified, compassionate adult will fight for and protect a child’s right to be safe, to be treated with dignity and respect and to
learn and grow in the safe embrace of a loving family.

FROM THE BOARD CHAIR:
We are pleased to present the Child Advocates – Denver CASA Annual Report for 2013. Last year, our organization
served nearly 400 children with 193 CASA Volunteers. Since 1995, our CASA Volunteers have advocated for
more than 3,400 children. We want to give special thanks to our amazing volunteers who sacrifice everyday to
provide services to abused and neglected children, giving each of these children a voice and hope as well as
the comfort that they have one adult that is a constant in their lives. We also want to thank the staff, board of
directors and the many individuals, foundations, corporations and community groups who support our work.
Many of the children we served were able to return to their parent’s care. Some of them were not.
However, for every child with a CASA volunteer, statistics show that they do better in school,
spend less time in the child welfare system and most importantly are more likely to find a safe,
permanent home. The more children we are able to help, the more likely we are able to help
them break the cycle of abuse and neglect and lead healthy, happy and productive lives.
There is still work to be done in 2014, as there are over 600 abused and neglected children
in Denver County that need a CASA Volunteer that we are unable to serve. Our goal is to
continue to increase the number of children served each year and with your on-going
support, our vision will become a reality. Thank you again for your investment in the children
of our community and knowing that it really just takes one person to make the difference in
the life of a child. You have been that difference.
Ann Mosso
Board President
I truly admire Traci Byrne’s dedication to the families she
works with. She is kind, compassionate, and understanding,
yet objective. She is able to assess the needs of the children
she works with, and provides the appropriate support. She is an
outstanding CASA. The families and professionals who work with
her are lucky to have such a loving and intelligent person
on the team. She is so good that I immediately requested
her for another case of mine, and was thrilled when I
found out she was on the team.

2013 VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR: BECKY DICKMAN
Ten months ago, Becky had just completed her first CASA family case, one that ended in reunification!
One month later she took on another case with a family of six kids! From the get go, she had a lot of
work to do as all of the kids were in different placements. Even though the dynamics of this family
appeared to be intimidating at first glance, Becky knew she could do it.
Presently, the children continue to do well. With everyone’s continued support, we are hoping
to achieve a successful closure sooner than later.
Becky’s persistence and patience are two of her greatest strengths. Her drive and
compassion have helped voice the concerns of the children she serves in court. Recently,
she voiced the importance of her CASA children moving to a kinship placement. It was
important that the Judge hear that the children had a viable placement option where
they would not be separated.
Child Advocates would like to thank you, Becky, for all of your hard work. Your ability
to stand up to other professionals when making tough decisions is inspiring, and
your compassion for the children in need of a permanent home is unparalleled.
We would not be able to function as an agency without caring people like
you and your fellow volunteers.
HOW CASAS MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVES OF CHILDREN
THE MORADO FAMILY
When Child Advocates received the referral for the Morado family in April 2013, it was very apparent to CASA volunteer,
Traci Byrne, that this family needed her advocacy. After the mother, Rachel, was pulled over for driving under the
influence and the children, Michael and David, reported that she had also driven them when she had been drinking
in the past, the Denver Department of Human Services opened a dependency and neglect case and Traci
was assigned as the CASA volunteer. From the beginning of this case, Traci knew that advocating for Michael
and David’s best interests would also require being a champion for Rachel, a young mom who was also
pregnant with baby number three. Traci was a strong advocate for the boys and source of support for Rachel,
empowering her to succeed in her treatment plan, which she was very determined to do. In addition to
attending team decision-making meetings, school meetings, taking the boys on outings, and getting to
know them well enough to identify their needs and wishes, Traci also helped Rachel with grocery shopping,
budgeting, and prioritizing the many responsibilities of her life. Traci acted as a mentor to Rachel, while still
advocating for the best interests of the boys. Traci’s point-by-point work with this family was an integral
component of the case’s successful closure in December 2013 after baby boy Manuel was born. Rachel
was able to maintain her sobriety and keep all three of her children safe in their home. Traci’s performance
as a CASA was commended by all of the professionals in open court, and her role’s importance was
reiterated in the form of a question from the ruling Magistrate: “When will you be ready for your next case?”
THE GREENE FAMILY
The Greene boys, Keller (12) and Tyrell (8), first became involved with the Department of Human Services
through a voluntary case in May of 2010. At the time, their mother, Iris, had been leaving them with
family members for weeks at a time. It was suspected that Iris had been using drugs. After refusing
substance abuse screening and treatment, a dependency and neglect case was filed,
and Keller and Tyrell were placed with their uncle, Jerry. Jerry never saw himself as their
long-term caregiver, he felt responsible to step in temporarily.
As months progressed, Iris’s engagement in her treatment plan dwindled and her
parental rights were eventually terminated. Two years into the case, and with Jerry
having no intention of adopting the boys, something had to change if the Greene
boys were going to find a ‘forever’ home. It was then that the case was referred
to Child Advocates. Jay Leonard was appointed as Keller and Tyrell’s CASA in
October 2012. Wasting no time, understanding the imperative need for lasting
stability, Jay quickly became a strong and vocal advocate for the boys. It became
clear that Jerry was more fond of Tyrell, who was close in age to his own son, and fit
into his family unit easily. While Jerry didn’t necessarily want to see the boys split-up,
he was wavering and unwilling to commit to Keller. But Keller needed commitment,
and the years of uncertainty were beginning to stack up.
Keller began to meet adoptive families on his own. He found a new sense of selfworth learning that there were families who really wanted him. In fact, there was
a family who wanted to adopt Keller and Tyrell. Jay’s steady encouragement and
commitment to keep the boys together, coupled with Jerry’s reality that he could lose
them both, brought Jerry to realize that he couldn’t let his family go. Finally, he agreed to
begin the process of adopting both boys. In December 2013, the Greene boys breathed a
breath of relief. Their CASA’s determination had been realized, and their adoption finalized.
I’m so thankful to have Jay on this case.
His investigative skills are great and he really
keeps all of the professionals in the loop.
Not to mention the boys love him.

YOUNG PHILANTHROPIST PROJECT:
The Young Philanthropist Project (YPP) was created by a group of philanthropists in
their 20s, 30s and early 40s in an effort to reach out to the community in support
of Child Advocates—Denver CASA, otherwise known as Court Appointed Special
Advocates (CASA). The group’s goal is to raise awareness about CASA in a way
that allows participants to have fun, network and give back to the community. YPP
encourages everyone to find out how incredible it can be to use your individual talents
and experiences to contribute to the overall mission and vision of Child Advocates—
Denver CASA! YPP strives to partner with local businesses and organizations to
create events that are fresh and appeal to young people interested in making a
difference. We strive to form collaborative marketing partnerships and produce
events that are not only a fun and exciting way to raise awareness and funds for
Child Advocates—Denver CASA, but that also provide exceptional networking
opportunities for young professionals and those interested in making a contribution to
the children and families of our community. To learn more about YPP and to become
involved please contact Julie Wilson, Development & Public Relations Manager for
