A DISTINGUISHED PAST
Founded in 1960, New CoUege opened in 1964 as a private coUege whose students
would come from aU parts of the nation and whose faculty and curriculum would reflect the
highest standards of exceUence.
New CoUege attracted immediate attention for the nature and quality ofits academic
program. In 1967, when the f"rrst students were graduated, the CoUege won accreditation.
Soon graduates began to make their marks in chosen careers and in graduate and professional
schools.
As the CoUege matured academicaUy, inflationary pressures threatened its very life
in the early 1970s. After exploring various strategies for surviva~ the coUege administration
and trustees proposed to the Board of Regents of the State University System of Florida a
novel plan that aUowed the institution to become a free-standing coUege within the University
of South Florida, sharing the campus with the University's regional campus academic
program. Special action by the Florida Legislature set the stage for this unique partnership
to occur. New CoUege was continued through a combination of support from the State and
annual grants from the New CoUege Foundation. Together, they enable the coUege to remain
smaU and to continue its distinctive program.
Events, activities, programs, and facilities of the University of South Florida are available
to all without regard to race, color, sex, religion, national origin, handicap, or age as
provided by law and in accordance with the University's respect for personal dignity.
