SCL EDITOR’S LETTER
Farces, dramas, musicals, battling DJs, snake dancers, karaoke, jazz festivals
and SHAPE Choir – what choice we have here at SHAPE! Lord Webber, eat
your heart out, or maybe we should leave that to Hannibal and some father
beans and a bottle of Chianti (purchased from the RIS of course!).
A good helping of offal was probably the only food stuff not on offer at SHAPE
Fest this year (shame, because I have a penchant for devilled kidneys and
faggots, 2 of my favourite meats!) which many of you have said was the best
ever! Of course, ‘Fest’ and all the other events mentioned in this edition of
SCL would not be possible without the huge effort and commitment from
the MW team and all of you who continually volunteer to help and provide
excellence service to the SHAPE community. THANK YOU. My personal
favourites at SHAPE Fest were the magnificent Romanian by-plane and the
SHAPE Club fries which helped soak up the very tasty Slovak and Czech
beers. And of course, the fantastic fireworks brought a fitting bang to end
proceedings (actually, the banging continued in my head for sometime after,
maybe the shots that had followed the beer!).
SHAPE Fest normally heralds the onset of autumn and with it the colder
and windier conditions that remind us that winter is on its way (‘hussar’,
that also means snow is coming and we can all get on the piste again). Hard
to imagine hooting down the slopes somewhere soon when we’re bathing in
sun these last couple of weeks, a welcome change from bathing in the deluges
during August . The great weather has also brought a welcome extension
to the cycling season providing lovely evenings to get out on 2 wheels and
enjoy the countryside around SHAPE. Now if you want a more leisurely cycle
and some practice at mending punctures, then come and join puncture Pete
(yours truly) and friends in the newly formed WMF Cycle Club. However, if
you want to join a far better organised and professional outfit, then I highly
recommend SHAPE Cycling Club who took time out to display at SHAPE Fest
(thanks guys). SHAPE CC continue to offer introductory rides for new and
potential members on Tuesday evenings and will continue an active training
programme during the winter months. Its great exercise (low impact) and
a great opportunity to see the nooks and crannies of the Belgium you don’t
normally see through the windscreen of a car. So, squeeze in to some lycra
(trust me, it makes a nice change from pink lingerie) and join the boys and
girls in the saddle (contact details available through SHAPE2Day).
Well, best head off for a run to lose some of the 1000s of calories I’ve consumed recently through SHAPE Fest and steak lunches. Before I go, I’d like
to go on record to say thank you to Mr Harvey Gough and the gang from
Steak Team Mission who very generously provided another fantastic steak
lunch for 600 troops on 3 Sep; top tips, don’t slice 500 jalapeno peppers bare
handed, as a good friend of mine will testify, and one day, treat yourself to
some Wiltshire faggots, lovely

thanked his superiors for their trust in him, his subordinate officers and non-commission officers who supported him in this
long but wonderful journey. He expressed his thankful feelings
towards his Holiness the Bishop of Belgium and his family
for standing by him throughout his military career. Finally, he
went on to welcome an experienced navy officer, the ingoing
NMR, Rear Admiral Konidaris Spyridon, congratulated him and
wished him all the best
for his new duties.
Rear Admiral Konidaris

other adjacent NATO entities, who all had the chance
to wish the farewell to the outgoing General and to
congratulate the ingoing Admiral.
The Greek delegation wishes the best to the new
Head of the GRC NMR and feels thankful for his predecessor who put his efforts in order to promote the
international friendship and the Greek culture.
SHAPE Fest 2014 By Megan Gilliland (USA –Civ)
Shapians gathered on September 5th and 6th for one of our community’s biggest celebrations of the year, SHAPE Fest!
Attendees were able to explore food, art and culture from around
the world all in one weekend. The festival area held 21 National
Military Representative booths, 34
vendors and 20 Group II booths.
Nations all served food specialties
of their home country, and many
wore traditional attire. Vendors
sold different beers, wine and liqueurs, wood crafts and jewelry.
There were a lot of smiling children. Young ones could be seen
making chalk art and getting their
faces painted. Jugglers and a man
making balloon animals entertained them, as well. And, not to
forget the carnival rides, games
and bouncy houses inside the
Kid’s Zone.
Performers took to the stage inside
the big tent to entertain spectators
taking advantage of big picnic tables to enjoy food and drink.
The event ended with a fireworks
display on Saturday night. This year’s big event was a success.
See you all next year!

SHAPE Military members Invited to Steak Lunch By Megan Gilliland (USA –Civ)
Steak Team Mission visited SHAPE Sept. 3rd to serve the community lunch in the big fest tent.
The U.S. based organization grilled over 600 steaks served with
coleslaw, cornbread and beans. Military
members of all nations were invited to
enjoy this delicious midday meal.
Steak Team Mission is a non-profit comprised of volunteers who travel around
the world feeding military personnel located in remote and hazardous areas.
The group has visited places such as

Harvey Gough, from Dallas,
Texas, started the program
in 2002 as a response to
9/11 terrorist attacks in the
United States. He was determined to give back to the
country and the troops that
protect it, so he used his 33
year military experience and
contacts to get the organization up and running. Since its launch over ten years ago, Steak
Team Mission has served over 50,000 steak dinners.
Donations are welcome and volunteers are always needed. For

The SHAPE International Band performs at the Baszta Jazz Festival
Contributed by SHAPE International Band Marketing Department
Our very own SHAPE International Band had the unique opportunity of performing at the Baszta Jazz Festival in Czchów, Poland.
Part of the band’s mission is to help spread NATO’s and the
SACEUR’s message of collaboration and friendship throughout
the NATO footprint. Music is a universal language that can bring
people together regardless of
nationality, religion or politics.
The band arrived in Krakow, Poland on July 10th to a warm welcome by the event’s staff. Colonel Jerzy Jankowski, The Polish
National Military Representative
and a native of Czchów, met the
Force Ten under the direction of U.S. Army Sergeant Nicholas
Cressotti, and Groove Summit. In the true spirit of collaboration,
the Polish NMR arranged for two Polish military musicians to join
the band for the festival. Sergeant Robert Zug on trombone and
Corporal Jacek Owsianka on saxophone performed admirably.
Corporal Owsianka even took a solo on
“In the Mood” as the audience cheered!
The concert was a rousing success receiving an incredibly positive response
from an audience of over 2,000.
The final day of the Baszta Jazz Festival
had the NATO Jazz Orchestra, under
the direction of Sergeant Heredia, performing on the waterfront of the beautiful Czchowskie Lake. This was the last
performance with the band for Adjudant
Renaud Valente of the French Marines and Sergeant Heredia.
The audience did not want the band to stop as they asked for
encore after encore. After the show, members of the band and
local officials enjoyed a scenic boat ride and conversations about
the success of the SHAPE International Band’s trip to this wonderful festival.
The conclusion of the trip was a picnic held at Col. Jankowski’s
house in the band’s honor. The support of the Polish NMR’s office
and the addition of the two Polish musicians made the whole trip
a wonderful experience and a complete success.
The band also performed at the SHAPE Fest. And don’t miss
this year’s Friendship Concert in the Theatre Royal de Mons on
10 October. The concert will feature the NATO Jazz Orchestra
and the vocal talents of Mons’ very own Maria D. Maria D is
an incredible singer who captures the style Edith Piaf as she
engages her audience. Visit shape2day.com or shapeband.be

musicians at the location of the first concert, The Hotel Łaziska,
and introduced them to Mayor Marek Chudoba. The band was
honored by the Mayor and offered a feast of traditional Polish
foods.
The first night’s concert featured two of the SHAPE International
Band’s small jazz groups, Groove Summit under the direction
of U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Matthew Scott and NATO Jazz
Impulse under the direction of U.S. Air Force Master Sergeant
Brent Swaney. As the concert came to its finale, the two groups
merged to give the audience an energetic version of “The Lady
is a Tramp,” featuring the vocal talents of U.S. Air Force Master
Sergeant Kim Lively and U.S. Army Sergeant Joel Heredia. The
audience clamored for an encore and the group obliged.
The following night showcased several of the SHAPE International Band’s groups. Bandmaster U.S. Army First Sergeant
Thomas MacTaggart organized a variety show of dixieland, jazz,
and rock. The concert featured the NATO Jazz Orchestra, Task

Polish Garden Party By LTC Miroslaw Ochyra (POL –A)
The traditional Polish
garden party took place
in August in the garden
of the residence of the
Polish National Military
Representative at SHAPE,
Colonel Jerzy Jankowski.
The meeting of the Polish
community was a great opportunity to welcome Polish soldiers starting their
three-year deployment in
Supreme Headquarters
Allied Powers Europe.
Polish families gathered
together to spend time with
friends, share experiences
about serving and living in
Belgium, as well as taste
delicious Polish specialties: dumplings, sausages,
salads, bigos and many sophisticated cakes. This
year, lovely and sunny weather encouraged everyone
to stay late and enjoy being together. The event over,
wonderful memories still fill our minds.
Medal Award Ceremony By LTC Miroslaw Ochyra (POL –A)
On behalf of the Minister of National Defense of the Republic of
Poland, Colonel Jerzy Jankowski,
Polish National Military Representative at SHAPE, presented the
silver medal of the Polish Armed
Forces to Hellas Armed Forces
Major General Dimitrios Chasapis. The medal was presented in
appreciation of General Chasapis’
fruitful cooperation and promotion
of the Polish Armed Forces. The
ceremony was held in the office
of the Polish NMR in mid-August.
The outstanding collaboration between Polish and Greek forces has
been ongoing for many years, with
the relationship growing stronger
with every year.
Canadian Radio Broadcast to End By John Nethercott (OF-3, CAN)
The Canadian Forces Network (CFN) will cease its FM radio
and Internet broadcast service on September 30, 2014. This
brings to an end decades of service providing information and
entertainment to generations of Canadian
Armed Forces personnel and their families
stationed in Europe as well as local listening
audiences.
The decision to end CFN operations was
not taken lightly. CFN has been in operation,
serving Canadians living in Europe, for generations. However, after a comprehensive
review of annual expenditures especially in the face of current
fiscal realities, it was determined that CFN was an area in which
savings can be made. Alternate, interactive and globally connected
medium exist through which information is easily shared. As the
means by which we receive information evolve, so too must we
adjust our organizational priorities.

SHAPE Community Life 17 September 2014
Over the years, the staff of fulltime employees and volunteers,
most notably Station Manager Mr. Olaf Guillaume, have demonstrated true professionalism and are to be commended for their
hard work and dedication to the community.
CFN has been operating a radio service out
of Brunssum, The Netherlands since 1978
providing 24-hour, real-time relay, live and
rebroadcast content to a listening audience
spread across Europe. CFN is primarily an
entertainment and information service providing content in both official languages. During
the Cold War period when the CAF had a larger European footprint, CFN provided a nationally controlled medium for wide-area
crisis and special event alerting.
Anyone wishing to send messages or share personal experiences with CFN can do so via their Facebook page at https://www.

The choir is always in need
of new members, particularly men, and would love to
have you join in the fun if you enjoy singing or would
like to learn to sing in a choir. The choir is under the
direction of Mojica Hribar from Slovenia and is accompanied by Michele Howarth from the United Kingdom.
Both are dedicated to bringing out the best music from each
of the members of the choir and both are very well-qualified
to do so. Rehearsals are held in the SHAPE Club on Wednesday evenings from 1900 - 2030. A social usually follows in

“It is better to walk in
the right direction that
to run in the wrong ...”
By LTC Bernard GAILLOT (FRA)
I
t is this basic principle of orienteering that may have
been understood by our brave competitors during the first
activity of the year proposed by “l’Association des Français
de Mons” (AFM organizes events for the French Community
in Mons) in early September 2014.
Before SHAPE FEST, AFM offered all French military personnel working at SHAPE the opportunity to participate
with their families in a fun and energetic activity,
on Wednesday afternoon 3 September, on SHAPE.
With simple orienteering circuits, open to all, running
from specific points of the base to others, AFM managed to
welcome its newcomers and to help them to discover quickly
the key points of the base.
Sixty members of the French community, aged from one to 60,
children, teens, spouses and soldiers of Mons and Chièvres,
ran in delightful weather and then shared a well-deserved
homemade dessert full of vitamins.
After some initial difficulties in orientating the maps, both
old and young competitors concentrated hard on their task
and managed to find all the checkpoints, achieving both a
great workout and improving their map reading (basic for
orienteering race ...). All this was conducted in a NATO base
where European football fields (soccer for US) are very close
to the American football and Baseball fields.
Thanks to the involvement of everyone, experienced or not,
who were encouraged by our French NMR. The organizers
were highly impressed by the commitment and the excellent
spirit of the competitors, makers of outstanding cakes, and
the SHAPE sponsors (Carrefour Market, RIS, Florist, BSG/
Sport) who offered great rewards presented by our Chief of
Staff. The first AFM activity of the year is therefore considered
a great success by everybody.
Thank you to all.
See you for the next race, perhaps with our friends and allies…
Be prepared!

Follow the Seasons
through the Eyes of an
Artist
By Mike Adubato (USA-Civ)
S
tarting on the second of
October you are cordially
invited to an exhibition of
oil paintings by Elena Bogatyr.
The exhibition is the “Colors of
France” and it will be held at the
SHAPE Club for two weeks.
Ms. Bogatyr also has a Shapian
connection as she is the mother
of French Air Force Sergeant
Chef Lydia Briand, who currently works in the Legal Office on
SHAPE.
“I’ve been painting since I was a
little girl,” she began the conversation. “I enjoyed drawing a lot,
especially old style dresses. I then had the opportunity to
start learning the fine arts: the history of art, sculpture and
different art techniques at the age of 13 because at school we
used to only study half days.”
from a generation of painters that really see nature
with sensitivity, tenderness and the ability to paint
the truth. He has taught me this point of view.”
Living in a part of France that she has called home
for the past 25 years, and that has an abundance
of natural beauty; it is never hard to find a subject
worthy of expressing on canvas.
“My paintings follow the nature in France; from
Brittany to Bourgogne and then to San Tropez and
Saint Barts. I like to follow the seasons; painting
camellias in January, mimosas in February, violets
in March, peonies in June, bundles of straw in July and so
on. I will continue to follow this process every year that God
gives me.”
Ms Bogatyr is the daughter of Ukrainian parents and when
she was 19 years old, she began studying at the Architectural
Institute of Kharkov in Ukraine.
“During those five years of technical study, I kept on following
drawing and painting classes as well as architecture. When
I moved to France, I practiced architecture until 1998 but it
was not really my passion.”
While in her village in Brittany,
she met Moscow-born artist Serguei
Toutounov and as she watched him
creating a beautiful landscape on
canvas, propped up on his easel, it
was then that she decided that becoming a full-time painter was where
her heart lied. The two artists have
since become good friends.
“Since Toutounov and I met, we often meet up with other painters for
“plein-air” (outdoor) sessions. I feel
so lucky to learn from him and consider myself as his student. He is
Being a professional painter as opposed to
an amateur who paints only for fun and
relaxation is quite different because you
have to make your living by producing
works of art that will sell. Also, being a
professional doesn’t mean that you know
all there is to know.
“For me, my art is a 24 hours a day job,”
Elena stated. “Of course I also am still
eager to learn more, so I visit the museums of the world and not only the famous
ones. I admire painters from the end of
the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th; especially those
from the Barbizon School such as Corot and John Sargent
for their portraits, and Cezanne and Pissarro for landscapes.
(Jean-Baptiste-Siméon) Chardin is also one I admire for his
still life paintings.”
I asked Elena about children today and whether or not she
feels that they are being encouraged enough when they show
a desire and even a talent for drawing and painting.
“I’m sure that there are a lot of talented children, sensitive

to arts, but I’m convinced that 99% of talent is represented
by learning, training, discipline, diligence and lots of hours
of dedication.”
“Today schools teach what is trendy, according to the taste
of the ministry of culture; however I
think it’s the parent’s part to show the
treasures of the culture, painting in this
case, and bring children to all kinds of
museums.”
“Also, children should not give up because
of bad evaluations from their art teachers.
They should always be encouraged!”
I, personally, would like to encourage you to
head over to the SHAPE Club next month
to meet this amazing artist and escape into
some of her paintings.
Espionage in the First World War
The SHAPE Military History Society
and SHAPE WoMen are
proud to present:
“The Secrets of Rue St. Roch:
Intelligence Operations Behind
Enemy Lines in the First World War”
by
Dr. Janet Morgan
Thursday 16 October 2014 from 1600 to
1700 hours in the SHAPE PAO Auditorium,
SHAPE Main Building
On Thursday the 16th of October Dr. Janet Morgan will be
at SHAPE to speak about her book “The Secrets of Rue St.
Roch”, the exciting and true story of an espionage ring, working behind the lines during the vital days of the enemy’s last
push in the Great War. This is the only full account of the
working of a team from the Intelligence Corps on the Western Front, as Captain Bruce’s group in Paris thought up their
plan, invented a code, devised a communications system, recruited and trained their agents - including a housewife from
Luxembourg and a heroic Belgian balloonist - and put the operation in place. It’s a thriller!
When Dr. Janet Morgan, author of “The Secrets of Rue St.
Roch”, opened Captain George Bruce’s Wellington chest, little could she have imagined the size of the archive of correspondence and documents related to his work; recruiting and
operating agents from an unmarked office on Rue St. Roch in
Paris from 1917. At the end of the war, officers of the Intelligence Corps were instructed by the War Office to burn nearly
all the files, and it was believed that any remaining were destroyed in the Blitz. Significantly, Captain Bruce retained all
documents relating to this operation. Janet has skillfully and
compellingly reconstructed a rare, full and detailed account
of a First World War espionage operation, from conception
to completion.

“Walk of Freedom”
By WO Catherine Boudreau, Canadian Physician Assistant
F
or the third consecutive year, five members of
SHAPE participated in a multi-national Force
Development Exercise in the French Pyrenées.
This march is called “walk of freedom” and this year
was the 21st edition. But before talking to you about
this amazing experience, it is important for you to
know exactly what this event is all about. What follows
was taken from the official website of the “Chemin
de la liberté”:
“This is not a hike for the faint-hearted. Inaugurated in 1994 as an official way-marked
walk, the path is unique in that it commemorates one of the several secret escape routes
over the central Pyrenees into northern Spain
during the Second World War. A route taken
not only by hundreds of Frenchmen and Jews
fleeing from their German oppressors, but also
by many RAF and American airmen who had
either crash-landed or parachuted to safety after being shot down over Nazi-occupied Europe.
Several well-organised escape lines were in operation throughout the war (the Comete Line,
the Pat O’Leary Line and the Marie Claire Line
to name three), and in each case the procedure
was the same ; evading air crew were passed
from link to link in the chain by a succession of
local “helpers” who clothed, fed and hid them,
usually at great personal risk to themselves.
Having reached the mountains, the men were
then hidden in secret collecting areas and
formed into groups ready for the final night
ascent to the Spanish border…. Ahead lay a
high mountain route into Spain that had been
carefully chosen to avoid all official checkpoints
and any likely contact with German patrols.’’
It is in this atmosphere that we hit the road
on Sunday morning, July 6, 2014. Direction:
St-Girons, France. Our team consisted of
Capt Xavier Michelot, (French army) as our
team leader, LCol Antonio de Sessa and also
LCol Marco Pojer (Italian AF), OR-8 Manuel
Torrejon Conejero, (Spanish Marines) and
myself, WO Catherine Boudreau, (Canadian
physician Assistant) who did the walk but
also the medical coverage.
The first few days served to get to know each
other better, because although there were
3 of us who had already participated in the
march last year, two were newcomers. So
nothing better than activities like rafting
and the climbing trees! Also, little by little,
the other participants of the march began to
arrive; they joined us at the camping site.
It was a great opportunity to see old friends
and to make new ones. Scott Goodall, who
wrote a book on the “chemin de la liberté,’’
is a member of the organization of this
event. He reminded all participants of the
importance of this march and our duty to
continue to remember our past.
It is with pleasure that we had some distinguished guests such as M. George, former
RAF member who saw his plane shot down
by the enemy and had to hide in the mountains for nearly three months. Despite his
93 years, this man of extraordinary charisma has a memory so accurate of the events
that he was able to share them with us.
Another guest was Paul Brouillé, one of
the last ‘’passeur’’ alive. Mr. Brouillé was

presented by LCol Antonio de
Sessa to the mayor of St-Girons on behalf of the people of
SHAPE. After some celebration
and remembrance, we started
these four days of walking
through the mountains, on the
same trail that over 100 people had crossed or attempted to
cross between 1940 and 1944.
Day 1: Departure. The early
morning was perfect but early! 104 participants began this
day, including us from SHAPE. Nearly 12 hours of walking in
the lower part of the Pyrenées and through some villages for a
distance of about 25km. On route, some halts were scheduled
for different ceremonies. One was in honor of a young guy, by
the name of Louis Barrau, who died at the age of 19. He had
helped many people along the trail. One day he tried to escape
the Nazis and was shot. A local singer composed a song in his
memory and we had the pleasure of listening to her sing the
song for us. We reached the city of Seix for a well deserved rest
and sleep after this first intense day, but before that we were
invited by the Mayor of Seix for a light snack in our honour.
Day 2: After having discovered a few newly
found muscles ... we took the road to the
Col de la Core at a height of 1395m (4577f).
The breathtaking scenery almost made us
forget the hardness and unevenness of this
passage. I reminded myself that we had the
chance to do this trail without too much
snow, with a full stomach and in peace time.
Then, a little higher in altitude, we stopped
at one of the many shelters. These are small
houses that serve as a shelter for walkers
but also for the shepherds. An unexpected
surprise was there for us: a few days before, some guides went to the shelter to drop
cheese, meat and wine so we were able to
have the apero! I must say that this was one
of the best 5 to 7 ever!! Songs and laughter
from U.K., Ireland and France was on the
menu!
Day 3: The most difficult day. We took the
direction of the refuge d’Estagnous, eight
hours of walking/climbing in thick fog, but we came to this
wonderful shelter at 2246m (7368f). That day was a good
climb, sometimes in the snow sometimes in heavy rain, but
the morale of the participants was excellent. When we arrived
at the shelter, a hot meal was waiting for us. The friendliness
of the place was perfect for getting to know other walkers who
accompanied us. People who participated in the march came
from all backgrounds. France, U.K., Ireland, Italy, Spain and
Canada, all have something in common: fitness and the passion of this great story of our past. Despite the rain and cold,
our night under our tent was beneficial. As military, we had

our welcome was warm. NATO’s participation is highly appreciated in this environment and as my friend said, in a very
positive way.
On behalf of the team, the authorities of St-Girons, the various
participants of the ‘’escape and Evasion’’ committee and those
who organized the Chemin de la Liberté, our collective thanks

their personnel to attend. The benefits of such exercise cannot
be underestimated. The
relationship with NATO
personnel will continue to
be much better because of
these types of opportunities. I can only hope to see

for future years in this
wonderful collaboration.
the experience of a more difficult environment!
Day 4: Unfortunately, we were unable to complete the last part of the journey which would
have taken us towards Spain for security reasons due to ice and snow. So we took another
trail and the word of the day was: Descent!!!
Again, beautiful scenery and the sun were there
for a spectacular conclusion. Unable to get there
by foot, we were transported by bus to a city
in Spain for a final ceremony, with traditional
dancing, songs and a good meal.
It is difficult for me to explain to what extent

New Novel in the
Fantasy World
By Mike Adubato (USA-Civ)
U
.S. Air Force Staff Sergeant Ryan Shimek left his hometown of San Antonio, Texas for Belgium but ended up
in the fictional city of Valour. Well yes, he did make
it to Belgium, too, but his passions for fantasy literature and
writing also led him to his first published novel, The Manifestation of Light.
“The book focuses on a new father named Aven,” the Texan
said. “Valour, the city that they live in is protected by a dome
of light that was gifted to them by their goddess, Edara. The
dome itself is powered by four different spires within the city,
and each spire is powered by a human sacrifice placed within.”
The action and excitement begins however when Aven’s son
is chosen to be one of the human sacrifices.
“Aven flees and manages to
find a way out of the city’s
border. What he discovers
beyond the dome is a world
full of darkness where he
uncovers a web of lies woven
by the priestesses that serve
Edara.”
With his fascination with
other worlds, it was inevitable that Sgt. Shimek, who
works at Chievres Air Base,
would one day create his own.
“Writing is my passion and
there’s not much I enjoy
more. I love reading fantasy
as well, but it’s a different
feeling for me when I write,
compared to when I read,”
Ryan continued.
the father of two young girls decided in the end to follow the
lead of authors such as John Grisham and Tom Clancy, and
self-publish.
“I did so much research into this subject and
looked at the pros and cons for both sides of the
business. Ultimately I decided on self-publishing
as I just think it’s the better way to go for new
authors. Putting the book out helped me realize a
dream, but I do have bigger ambitions and would
like to be published by a major house someday.”
But back to the story.
“While the center of the plot revolves around
Aven, there are a few other main players to the
story. Vitar perhaps is my very favorite. He is
the lone priest of Edara, and it’s his sole responsibility to keep the people of Valour ignorant to
the real world outside of the dome. He does this
by instilling fear and forever silencing those who
pose a threat to their way of life. He is sent to
find Aven and bring him back to the city. On his
journey, he encounters one of the darkest beings
in the world. He learns a lot during his search,
but the most important thing he discovers is that
he’s capable of love.”
“When I write, I let my characters take me on their journey and I learn much about
them as they do and feel as
if I’m right there with them.
I’m not the type of writer that
outlines everything, so when I write, many things
often surprise me. I’ll have a clear idea of where I
want something to go, but sometimes my characters
have other ideas and I get pulled along with them.”
If you’re interested in reading the book, it is available on Amazon, Barnes and Noble and other
eBook retailers. Paperback copies are also available on Amazon. You can also contact Ryan at
[email protected].
And it seems that these characters, especially the
strong-willed ones, take over the book themselves.

“There’s a part toward the end of this book that I had
plotted out in my head for months. I knew exactly
how it was going to unfold but when I got there,
another character had other ideas. I wrestled over
the change for a couple of days but finally decided
to let the second character have his way. I think
the book is better for it.”

The Darts League is

n Monday evening, 8 September, the Rocquencourt
Chowder, Marching & Darts Society (RCMDS) kicked
off their 2014-2015 season at the SHAPE Events Cen-
If you read the last issue of SHAPE Community Life and saw
the article on RCMDS, you will know all about the league, the
teams and the format of the evening’s “arrowing” excitement.
On this particular night 10 of the 11 teams competed, while
the defending champions, the Bully Bulldogs arranged the
DARTO for the evening. The league’s newest team, Ed’s Crocs,
who are captained by yours truly, had six of their 10 players
show up (thank you for letting them out wives and girlfriends)

and soundly registered their first victory in the team’s history.
Everyone threw well but special kudos go out to Dean Smolden
and Harold Verhoeks, two guys who are new to the league.
They were pivotal in securing this first victory and putting
the team at the top of the darts food chain.
The surprise of the night was Kim Ford and her Ooh La La
girls securing a victory and landing in third place. Way to
go ladies! Other winners on the night were Kaos, The Magic
Awackers and Nics Nuts.
If you’re interested in throwing darts, drinking beer and generally having a great time on a Monday night, it’s not too late to
join a team. Just contact Ales Franjko (ext. 6249), Jean-Paul
Sabbe (ext 4811) or Greg Wilcox (ext 8879) and they will be
happy to welcome you to the madness.
The league will now move back to the SHAPE Club’s ballroom
for the rest of the season, so show up around 1800 hours on
Monday. See you there!

Get To Play Chess On
Your Tour
By Christian Jorgensen (Civ)
I
f you are a chess player, playing in one of the local
chess clubs is an excellent way to get involved in and
contribute to the local community at the same time as
practicing your favorite game. The chess club in downtown
Mons unfortunately stopped some years ago, but there
are three clubs in the vicinity: in Saint-Ghislain playing Friday nights and Monday afternoons, in Jemappes
playing Saturday afternoons; and in Soignies also playing
Saturday afternoons. All
the clubs welcome visitors
to pop in for some informal
games or to participate in
their activities for a period to see what it is like.
If thereafter you wish to
continue, you can join as a
member for an annual fee
of about 50€. Then you also
become a member of the
Belgian Chess Federation.
You will get a Belgian rating, and you can play on the
club team and participate
in tournaments elsewhere.
The 2014-15 season is
just starting. Throughout the season the clubs
mostly play tournaments
with one formal game per
meeting but with the opportunity for informal
games before and after.
The results of the formal
games are reported to the
Chess Federation, where
they will count towards
your rating.
If you are a strong player
your contribution to the
clubs will be valued. If
you, like the author, is
just an ordinary weak
player, come and have
some fun games. If you
have not played for years,
well, here is the opportunity to get started again.
The clubs operate in
French. But there will
be someone who can
communicate in English,
and naturally the games
follow the international
chess rules.
You will find more information about the clubs
at their websites (also in
French): http://echecslatour.be for Saint-Ghislain, http://www.echiquierhautesenne.be for
Soignies, and http://
www.monsechecs/be
for Jemappes. I play
in Saint-Ghislain, and
I have played both in
Soignies and Jemappes,
so I can give more information (in English) and,
if so required, introduce
you to any of the clubs.

Share a Meal 2014
Appeal is coming
8 October
By Pam Giacomello (CAN-Civ), Chair, International Chapel Centre Charity Association (IC3)
T
he Share-A-Meal 2014 Appeal KICK OFF is 8 October at the Carrefour Market on SHAPE. Affectionately
called “SAM,” the International Chapel Centre Charity
Association (IC3) is pleased to announce this upcoming event,
to invite you to share a little of what you have with others
in need.
SAM or Share a Meal, was started in 1985, when Mr. Tommy
Temple (who now works with the IC3) was approached by a
Canadian teacher offering to provide 10 boxes of food for 10
families in need. Today, SAM has grown into its own MWR
Group 2 Charity activity, with families provided from two local
ASBLs (not for profit charities), by the IC3.
Each year, a new SAM Appeal invites the international community to “sponsor” a local family. SAM, run by a SAM Council of
international volunteers, provides suggested food guidelines,
information and SAM boxes, to fill for families in need.
The SAM Appeal 2012 brought new but positive changes.
For many years, 50 names from four ASBLs were requested.
Asking for feedback, we learned one ASBL supported 400
+families! Large boxes made delivery and storage difficult,
as well as super-size products in EU fridges! Deliveries were
made by older volunteers and fresh meat now brought its own
spoilage issues.
One large change was for two charities, L’Utopie
and Les Ouvriers du Coeur, where SAM decided to
meet their Directors at their local Colruyt stores. L’Utopie
filled their pallet with frozen chicken meat for all of its 400
families, as well as bulk size goods they could portion out.
SAM Appeal 2014, brings a 3rd ASBL to this program, Société
St. Vincent (de Paul) Ath! Opening in October in Maffle, IC3
has added them to their list, and SAM offered to help, bringing
their total support to five ASBLS!
Sponsor a family from E.So.P (Cuesmes) and St. Vincent de
Paul (in Perulz) who will give us 60 names each! Instead of
meat, we have Gift Certificates from Delhaize, and any surplus
food will supplement their two Food Banks.
Volunteers are still needed to help load two trucks in mid-November.
Come to the Kick-Off on 8 October to find out more! Sponsor a
Family, donate money or give some time… to help us to help
those in need. Questions? Email: [email protected] ,
[email protected] or visit the SHAPE Chapel Centre.

Hints and Tips
Trash collection 101
This section is a place for Shapians to share their experiences. If you have any
hints or tips to share with the community, please send to [email protected].
By Heather Tuttle (USA –Civ)
No matter what village you live in, you will be part of a greater Commune or Municipality.
This is simply a governing council (size depends on the size of the combined villages served)
that works to regulate everything of communal interest, including your trash service. The
following questions are always pressing in our SHAPE Community regardless of what village
you are living in:
1. Where can I purchase trash bags and recycling bags for my village/commune?
You will always be able to purchase them at your Maison Communale, but many local grocery shops within your commune will also carry them. You can ask for the “sacs poubelle”
at the checkout. The typical cost is 1,00 - 1,50 € per bag sold in rolls of 10 bags. Make sure
when you ask for them that you specify which commune you want as some stores may carry
more than one.
Additionally, when you pay your annual trash tax you will likely receive several rolls as part
of the payment which you can pick up at the Maison Communale upon presentation of proof
of payment of your trash taxes. Some communes will have predetermined days and locations
for this pick up, so look at your correspondence closely.
2. Why can’t I just use regular waste bags purchased at the Carrefour or Commissary?
You are required to use the ones designed for your commune because the cost of each bag
essentially pays for the collection of your waste. Collection is done weekly and if your pick-up
day falls on a holiday, your new pick up will be the next business day (in most situations).
3. What about recycling? Do I need a special bag for that? Why wasn’t my recycling
picked up?
Recycling bags are clear blue. You must use these bags if you plan on putting recycling out.
Most communes will have a plastic pick-up day and a paper pick-up day. The norm is weekly
for regular trash, every two weeks for plastic recycling, and monthly for paper pick-up. Paper/
cardboard items should be neatly and securely bundled when placed out for pick up, and not
in plastic bags. If any of your items are not picked up, be assured it is for good reason. Perhaps
you have the wrong trash bag, or they noticed an item that does not belong in the recycling,
or you have something other than paper in your bundle. There is always a reasonable answer.
European Clothing Sizes for
Children By Danielle Foster (BEL –Civ)
Are you lost in translation, or make that ‘lost
in conversion’? As an American mom in Europe, my fluent French does not help me when
it comes to clothing sizes. Its easy enough to
remember my own size (range), but the kids
keep changing sizes!
Here is a little chart that may be slipped in a
dresser drawer for sorting days, or in a purse
for shopping and flea market days. In the left
column is the list of ages, on the right is the
European size, which is the equivalent to their
approximate size in centimeters.
As I understand it, the kids do not actually
wear their age, but the age above. So for example, age 4, or size 104 is worn from age
3 until they turn 4, when they start wearing
age 5. This is of course, quite relative. My girls
are tall, so they wear one or two sizes larger
than their age.
In case this image is too girly, you may find a
more neutral version at the danielleinmons.
wordpress.com blog.
Some communes also offer a “junk” pick up day where you can put out your larger unwanted
items. You can always research local recycling centers for larger items, too.
4. Where can I find the information about the pick-up days for my village/commune?
Most communes have websites and if you search under the heading of “déchets ménagers”
(household waste), or “ramassage des déchets” it will show the company contracted by the
commune and a calendar. In some cases, there will be a link to a printable schedule and
diagram of what can be recycled and what should be trash.
5. What about glass recycling?
Each village or commune will have a location where you can drop off your glass items (glass
you have not put a deposit on at the local grocery store). They are usually centrally located
and are large dome-like structures where you drop clear glass (verre clair) in one hole, and
colored glass (verre coloré) in a separate hole.
6. What else can I recycle?
Old appliances and electric items can be dropped off at a local recycling center.
Food items can be recycled or composted, as can grass clippings and shrubbery. You can
compost these yourself or take them to your local recycling center. Some communes have
pick up days for clippings.
Batteries and other small hazardous waste items are recyclable. Batteries can be collected
in most grocery stores in the BEBAT boxes, and check your local commune website for other
items (fluorescent lights, paint, oil, etc…).
Clothing is also recyclable and you will find collection stations, again centrally located in
your commune, labeled “vêtements” where you can deposit your used items.
Trash collection, recycling, and junk item disposal can be a bit confusing, but overall Belgium
strives to maximize recycling. Check the website for your commune for the details. It may
take a bit of navigating and a bit of online translation assistance, but you will undoubtedly
find sorting your rubbish much more enjoyable if you know what you are doing, and where
to go for recycling.

Sports, Health and Fitness
Happiness has returned to the Stade Charles Tondreau in
Mons!
After starting the season with a pair of losses and a pair
of draws, the Dragons have discovered how to score goals
and more importantly, how to win. After their first game of
September against Patro-Eisden, where they did everything
right except score a goal (ending in 0-0), they hit the road a
few days later and came home with all three points.
This was a midweek trip to play KSK Heist and unfortunately
for me about a 120 km drive so I didn’t risk driving up there,
no other goals would be scored.
So in their last three games, our local boys have kept three
clean sheets and scored five goals. Hopefully they will keep it
up for the rest of the season and who knows, maybe challenge
the top of the table for promotion back to the Pro League.
In other football the Pro League has been a bit quiet with Euro
2016 qualifying games taking place. Belgium’s only competitive game thus far was to be against Israel, but this has been
postponed until next year due to Israel not being a very safe
place to visit at the moment.
Hopefully your national team managed to get off to winning
ways. The USA obviously doesn’t compete in European competitions but we did
play against the Czech
Republic in a friendly
and beat them 1-0. The
Czechs then had their
qualifier against the
Dutch and won that one.
past Brussels traffic to the town of Heist-op-denBerg. After hearing the result, I wish I had. Harlem Gnohéré, who recently joined the team, struck
first in the 23rd minute to put the Dragons ahead.
This was the Frenchman’s first goal for the team.
He was joined on the score sheet in the second half
by his Belgian strike partner Yannick Loemba.
The following Saturday the team returned to their home field
to host Roeselare. This time I was there! A few fellow Shapian
friends also joined me – Gary Constable from NCIA and the
Norwegian duo of Tor Overland and Eivind Teslo, who work
at NAEW Force Command. It has to be pointed out that both
Gary and Eivind bought the new Mons shirt but Tor couldn’t
reach deep enough into his pocket that day, so wore his old
one. I was thinking of passing the hat so that we can take up
a collection to get him the new shirt!
But what a game we saw. Mons took another early lead, this
time just past the half hour mark. Gnohéré was brought down
in the box by Alexander Embrechts. The defender was shown
a straight red card. The striker was shown the penalty spot.
The Frenchman easily converted his chance into a goal.
RAEC could only muster the one goal in the first half with
the man advantage. This, however, changed after the intermission when Badou Kere doubled the lead, followed later
with Gnohéré’s second of the night. To make matters worse
for the visitors, team captain Sven De Rechter did not lead
by example when he was shown a red card at the hour mark.
The last 30 minutes showed a lot of possession for Mons but

The Belgian summer
may be over but not so
cycle racing in Belgium.
There are still a handful of races that you can
get to if you still have the
urge to cheer the peloton
as it races by. If this is
the case, here are some
races within the Kingdom of the Belgians that you might like
to check out.
On September 24th there will be the Omloop van het Houtland.
This is a one day event that covers 199.5 kilometers. The
riders leave from the village of Lichtervelde, which is just an
hour from SHAPE, north of Tournai. Then on the 28th you
can catch the Gooikse Pijl. Don’t ask me who names these
races! This Europe Tour event gets underway in the town of
Sports, Health and Fitness
Gooik and again, it’s not really very far from SHAPE. You
can make it there in about 50 minutes. Just head to Soignies,
then head north past Enghien... well, just turn on your GPS
which should be easier.
Hey, did you guys know that there is a hockey league in Belgium? Well, they call it a hockey league but I’m referring to
the game that isn’t played on the ice. Imagine that, hockey
NOT played on ice! Who could have come up with that? But
if you are interested and have been to a game or plan to see a
game, I would love to hear from you. The league just started
up again at the end of last month and goes on until the end
of April. There are teams from Waterloo, Leuven, Antwerp
and a bunch of other places. They all seem to be in Flanders
though. There are 12 teams in total in this league called the
Audi Hockey League.
For me, I think I’ll wait until the proper hockey starts up
again. Belgium does have a proper hockey league, a few as a
matter of fact, at different levels. Their top league only has a
half dozen teams, however. To be honest, I haven’t been to a
game here in Belgium. When I’m in a hockey mood, my plan is
to book a Ryanair flight to Bratislava to see Slovan play. They
are in the KHL (Kontinental Hockey League) which consists
of the best teams in Europe.
Closer to home, the French play hockey too. Their first division
league only has six teams in it as well.
The closest city to visit to catch a game
rGerman rider, Marcel Kittel – last year’s winner of the Omloop van het Houtland
(photo from Tour of Britain 2014)
is Reims, which is a couple hours away by car. In their third
division, group “B” there is a team just across the border in
Valenciennes. As the cold weather moves in, I’ll do a bit more
research into the hockey leagues. Of course, if any of you out
there know more about this than I do (and I’m sure there are
many of you), please get in touch.
Until next time...

SHAPE Healthcare
Facility: Missed
Medical Appointments
By LTC Aristotle A. Vaseliades
Deputy Commander for Administration, SHAPE Healthcare Facility
T
he Army defines a missed medical appointment as
a patient who has an appointment at a treatment
facility who neither uses the appointment nor fails
to cancel or notify the facility of their inability to use the
appointment. Missed appointments have a large effect on
the healthcare system, costing about $5 million annually
for nearly 5,000 missed appointments across Europe. When
patients fail to attend booked appointments with their provider, the impact on the system goes farther than some may
realize. The impact includes lost provider time and delayed
access for other patients who could have been seen during
the missed appointment. This delay can lead to patients
going to local emergency departments for non-emergent
conditions. Additionally, too many missed appointments
can start to affect staffing levels over time and lead to a
reduction in services.
Here at SHAPE we have averaged 133 missed appointments per month for the first 10 months of fiscal year 2014.
This accounts for 5.6% of our total booked appointments,
which is just above the Army goal of 5.0%. When we look
at appointments at local host nation hospitals, we have
a 4.3% missed appointment rate for the last 7 ½ months.
Congratulations SHAPE! While we are doing well at keep-
ing missed appointments down, there is always room for
improvement. Here at the clinic we realize things happen
that sometimes cause patients to be late or unexpectedly
miss an appointment. If you are running late, please come
in. If you are less than 10 minutes late we will still work
you into your scheduled appointment. If you are over 10
minutes late, in consultation with your provider, we will
try to work you in if that is what you desire. We will also
give you the option to reschedule your appointment.
Here are a few tips to assist you in not accidentally missing
your next appointment.
1) Automatic Telephonic Appointment Reminders: For
each appointment you book at the health clinic you should
receive a telephonic reminder a couple of days before your
appointment. If you are not receiving these calls, please
stop by our records room and ensure we have your correct
phone number in our computer system.
2) In the event you know you have to cancel your appointment, you just need to call central appointments at
+32(0)65/44.58.86 or DSN 423-5886 and choose option #2.
The phone system will prompt you for some information
about your upcoming appointment. It is important that you
speak slowly and clearly when answering the questions.
Once you finish answering the questions the system sends
us an audio file so we can cancel your appointment. If you
do not speak clearly we cannot cancel the appointment and
it will most likely result in a no show.
3) Our local host nation hospitals also appreciate advance
notice if you need to cancel an appointment with them.
Please call our healthcare finders at +32(0)65/44.50.36
(50.37) (58.31) or DSN 423-5036/5037/5831 and they will
assist you.
