Dear Friends and Neighbors,
Welcome to December Magic (and Madness)!
As you stroll around the neighborhood admiring all the beautiful
holiday decorations this month, be sure to stop in and visit our
neighborhood stores and restaurants. It’s been a tough year for
small businesses in Baltimore and our local merchants would
really appreciate your patronage during the holiday season. Please
remember them as you fill your shopping bags with gifts for family
and friends!
There are lots of opportunities to help folks who are struggling
during the holiday season. We encourage you to share volunteer
information on our (Federal Hill Neighborhood Association)
Facebook group so that all who are interested have a chance to
participate. The BPD is once again collecting coats for those in
need in South Baltimore. They are looking for clean, gently used
coats of any size or type. If you have a coat to donate, please drop it
off by December 18th at 829 William Street any time, day or night.
Since December is such a busy month and attendance is typically
very low, we are not holding a general membership meeting this
month. Our next meeting, on Tuesday January 19th, is the first
meeting of the new membership year. Please note that in order to
remain an active member, you must renew your membership by
January 31st. Remember also that all are welcome to attend our
meetings but in order to vote, you must have been a member in
good standing for 30 days. FHNA membership forms are included
in every Hillsider for your convenience. If you prefer, you may
also sign up online on our website at http://federalhillbaltimore.
org. We really encourage you to join us and have a voice in
community affairs.

Information on HomeServe External Water and Sewer Line Service
OPTIONAL Coverage

As winter is coming, this communication provides detailed information on OPTIONAL coverage (HomeServe) for your home’s external
water service and sewer service lines. My office has received dozens of requests for information or questions on this OPTIONAL service and
we hope this communication will answer most, if not all, of these questions.
As a homeowner in Baltimore City, you are responsible for the maintenance and repair of the external water service line from the exterior
wall of your home to your property line; and for the sewer service line, from the exterior wall of your home to the property line or cleanout.
If you are unfortunate enough to suffer a leak, break or clog in these lines, it would be up to you to find a plumber and pay for the repairs,
which could cost you thousands of dollars.

the decision that best suits your home needs and financial situation. ***
Who is HomeServe?
HomeServe was selected by the City in May 2014 to be the one City-qualified carrier of this OPTIONAL coverage. More information

HomeServe is an independent company separate from the City of Baltimore and offers this OPTIONAL coverage. Your choice of whether
to participate in this service plan will not affect the price, availability or terms of service from the City of Baltimore. Charges for this
OPTIONAL coverage will not appear on your City issued water/sewer service bill.
Confusion was created by the fact that invitation letters HomeServe mailed to citizens included the City seal on them. I have asked DPW on
multiple occasions to insist HomeServe not use the City seal on its communications. In addition, there was media attention to the process
which was used to select HomeServe, however, the award has been made and that is not something that this communication intends to
address.
What are the different types of coverage?
Each type of coverage is listed below. In addition, you may view more information on the coverages here:

1. Water Service Line Coverage - As your home ages, so does the exterior water service line that brings fresh water to your house.
Leaks and breaks are usually caused by aging of the pipe, corrosion, extreme temperatures, settling or shifting of the ground. If
this line fails, repair or replacement can be expensive and most basic homeowners insurance doesn’t cover repairs to the line on
your property (you should check with your homeowners insurance to confirm this). Water Service Line Coverage provides as many
service calls as you need for covered repairs to repair or replace a leaking or permanently blocked exterior water service line from
City of Baltimore’s service connection to the water meter or main shut-off valve inside your home that is damaged due to normal
wear and tear, not accident or negligence. This service is $3.99 per month.
2. Exterior Sewer/Septic Service Line Coverage - The buried sewer service line on your property that carries waste away from your
home can age, crack or leak due to simple wear and tear, tree roots or shifting ground. This line can also get blocked and cause waste
water to back up into your home. Most basic homeowners insurance doesn’t cover repairs to this line and as a homeowner, you could
face expensive repair or replacement costs. Exterior Sewer/Septic Service Line Coverage provides, up to the benefit amount, for
the covered cost to repair or replace a leaking or permanently blocked sewer or septic line on your property, that is damaged due to
normal wear and tear, not accident or negligence. This service is $5.49 per month.
3. Exterior Line Coverage – This is essentially a bundle package deal that combines the above two services: Water Line Service
Coverage and Exterior Sewer/Septic Service Line Coverage. This service is $8.49 per month, as opposed to $9.48 were you to
purchase the two separately.
4. Interior Plumbing & Drainage System Coverage - There’s a complicated network of pipes, lines, valves and drains that make
up your home’s plumbing system. All these parts can get clogged and break as they age and it’s your responsibility to fix these
problems. Plus, most pipes and drains sit behind your walls, making it more difficult to know when something will go wrong. When
problems do occur, leaks and clogged drains need to be fixed immediately before they cause flooding and water damage to your
home. Interior Plumbing & Drainage System Coverage provides, up to the benefit amount, for the covered cost to repair or replace
a leaking or permanently blocked interior plumbing and drainage system that is damaged due to normal wear and tear, not accident
or negligence. This service is $16.99 per month.

Where to get more information?
Before purchasing service, you should check with your current
homeowners insurance and be sure to ask if any service you are seeking to
add is already covered. For more information on the services above or to

Who is eligible for coverage?
A residential homeowner with sole responsibility for the exterior water and
sewer service lines may be eligible. Residences not affixed to a permanent
foundation, recreational vehicles and properties used for commercial
purposes are not eligible. If you live in a development community with a
condominium, co-op or homeowners association, your exterior water and
sewer service lines may not be an individual homeowner’s responsibility,
so please check with your association before deciding if coverage is right
for you.
How much will it cost?
As a City of Baltimore customer, you can now receive a special
introductory rate of $5.99 per month for the first year of coverage for your
water and sewer service lines. You will be renewed annually at the thencurrent renewal price (currently $8.49 per month). Individual coverage
for your water and sewer service lines are also available. Prices for each
package are listed above.
Once I have coverage, when can I make a service call?
Your plan will start 30 days after your enrollment is processed. During
this 30 day period you will receive the full Terms and Conditions, with
complete coverage and exclusion details, to help you decide if coverage
is right for you. You can make a service call immediately after your plan
starts.
What is the cancellation policy?
You can let the company know any time before your plan start date that
you no longer want this coverage and receive a refund of any monies paid.
If you do, your plan will not start and payment will not be taken. You
may also cancel within 30 days of your start date for a full refund less
any claims paid; cancellations after the first 30 days of your coverage will
result in a pro-rata refund less any claims paid.
What is covered?
The cost to repair or replace the water and sewer service lines that
are damaged due to normal wear and tear are covered, not accident or
negligence. Exterior Water Service Line-No annual benefit limit with as
many service calls as you need for covered repairs to the line from the
city meter to the shut off valve inside your home. Exterior Sewer Service
Line-Up to $10,000 annually with as many service calls as you need for
the sewer line that takes wastewater away from the external wall of your
home to your property boundary or clean out, which is normally located
next to the property boundary.

What quality of repair can I expect?
Local, licensed, insured and City approved plumbers will be responsible
for handling your covered emergency. Covered repairs are guaranteed
against defects in materials and workmanship for one year.

Why New Year’s Resolutions Fail

The New Year is upon us and it is a sensational time full of hope and excitement for new beginnings.
It is also a popular time for setting resolutions to get healthier, reduce debt, & quit bad habits like
smoking, just to name a few. But while we are full of optimism for the wonderful changes ahead,
many of us know all too well that feeling that wells up around March or April when we realize that our
resolutions weren’t as resolute as we thought. When we ask ourselves “why” we start to get answers
which may include:
1. No Plan- It is one thing to say I want to get healthy but what exactly does that mean? Don’t
be afraid to be specific…I want to lose X amount of pounds by this date, AND this is how
I’m going to do it. Then break down your plan of action (e.g. 1 lb. a week by cutting back on
sugar or carbs and by working out 4 days a week). Failure to plan is planning to fail.
2. No Support- It is really hard to make lifestyle changes when you don’t have support in your
decision. Case in point- you decide to quit smoking but all of your friends still smoke. That
is a lofty expectation when temptation is everywhere you look. Now, I’m not saying you
have to ditch your friends but you will have a much higher success rate if you start finding
like-minded people to help you get through the rough patches.

3. No Accountability- Here is the tough love…You have to stay accountable to yourself! No ifs, ands, or buts about it. It is no one
else’s job to keep you on track, and every time you compromise on your resolve you are telling yourself that you didn’t really mean
it anyway and you cheat again, and again, until you eventually throw in the towel. Be reasonable with your goals and make space
for slip-ups, but don’t allow the slip-ups to become the standard.

PAVER CAMPAIGN INSTALLS 170 ENGRAVED PAVERS IN FEDERAL HILL PARK
Baltimore, MD—On a beautiful Saturday morning November 20, 2015, at Federal Hill Park, South Harbor Renaissance
(SHR) unveiled the first 170 engraved pavers donated through its Paver Campaign “Make Your Mark on the Park”.
One of SHR’s founders, Ms. Anne Apgar, said “What a perfect day to celebrate the Park, its rich history and promising
future. A huge thank you thank you to our generous donors, including Pub Dog Pizza and Maria D’s Sub Shop, and our
photographer, Mr. Bill Van Dyke, for capturing the delight of children and adults alike in discovering their own paver.”
Custom-engraved pavers are replacing those in the path through the Federal Hill Park Playground and are paving the way
for generations to come. A tribute to a family member or someone special becomes a lasting legacy and helps fund
ongoing improvements to the park.
This is only the beginning. Every time 25 or more new pavers have been donated, a new section will be installed. To join
the effort, please visit www.south-harbor.org.
The ongoing support of individuals and institutions is vital as SHR, in consultation with the Baltimore City Department of
Recreation and Parks and the community, shifts its focus from capital projects to maintenance and security in Federal Hill
Playground and Park. This will help Federal Hill Park regain the stature appropriate to its history and prominence; help the
city attract and retain residents, especially families, as well as businesses; and build a better Baltimore. Since May 2015,
SHR been responsible for and funded the day to day maintenance and cleaning of the Park by the Waterfront Partnership
of Baltimore.
Over the past five years, South Harbor Renaissance has worked collaboratively with the Department of Recreation and
Parks, the Commission on Historical and Architectural Preservation, the Baltimore Tree Trust, the Downtown Baltimore
Family Alliance, the Federal Hill Neighborhood Association and the Waterfront Partnership of Baltimore to restore,
preserve and enhance Federal Hill Park as a resource for the diverse communities of Baltimore City and its visitors.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS
South Harbor Renaissance and its partners have invested over $700,000 in improvements to the Park, including:









Installation of a new Flag Staff Plaza, dedicated by former Governor Martin O'Malley in June 2012;
Restoration of two major historic monuments to War of 1812 heroes General Samuel Smith and Colonel George
Armistead, rededicated in September 2013;
Completion of plans, designs and construction for a new historic-themed Playground, reflecting the State's civic,
maritime, and mercantile heritage, completed in June 2014;
Installation of historically appropriate, 3-arm, weatherproof benches, as well as trash and recycling receptacles;
Restoration and painting of the playground area fence enclosure and light poles;
Installation of dog waste dispensers;
Engagement of the Waterfront Partnership of Baltimore to provide consistent cleaning and landscaping,
beginning in May 2015;
Planting of 27 new trees in June 2015;
Restoration of turf over a multi-year period beginning in fall 2015.
SUPPORT
SHR raised substantial funds from the State of Maryland’s Program Open Space, as well as private grants and donations.
The Goldseker Foundation provided a crucial seed grant enabling start-up support by the Waterfront Partnership of
Baltimore. The Abell Foundation and Parks and People Foundation met specific needs. SHR also raised playground funds
through GiveCorps. The Baltimore Community Foundation is the nonprofit’s fund administrator. Ballard Spahr and
Venable have advised SHR pro bono. Committed Board members and volunteers continue to give their time and talent.

A Season for Boxing

We are about to dive into yet another grueling winter, which means more days inside and fewer
activities outside. This is when it is most important to try and stay as active as possible to avoid
the winter bulge. Once your body gets used to the sedentary lifestyle, any summer progress will
go out the window. Since it is not so easy to go outside for a jog or bike ride, I want to look at a
new option for staying active and fit. A few typical but good options are indoor cardio at a gym,
like the treadmill, the bike (spin classes), and swimming. One new idea for those who haven’t
tried it is boxing. Boxing is a fantastic workout, great for cardio and resistance training, and
tends to feel a lot less like running around on a hamster wheel.
You may be concerned about the toughness of boxing, getting punched in the face, etc. but
you don’t have to step in the ring to reap the benefits of the workout. Generally a workout
would begin with a warm up, such as jump rope and/or shadow boxing, where you work on
foot movement and hand coordination. Following that, one might work on hitting the hanging
bags, which is not as easy as it looks. A timer is normally on constantly in the gym, timing three Amy DeTorres
minutes of work and a thirty second break. For three minutes you are keeping your feet moving and your arms punching- jab, straight,
hook, uppercut. The bags are heavy and it takes a good amount of effort to land three minutes worth of combinations. After this, if you
are working out with a trainer or a knowledgeable partner, mitt work would follow. One person is holding two flat gloves and calling
combinations while the other is punching in response. Again, three minutes- no break until that timer sounds.
Boxing involves upper body, core, and lower body. Shoulders, back arms and chest are the tools used to deliver the strikes. Each hit is
made harder by a twisting of the hips, which is fantastic for the core. Continuous movement of the feet and bending at the waist like a
squat to duck, pivot, and move works the lower
body like no other workout.
A session typically lasts about an hour, and
once it is complete, it’s nice leaving knowing
you’ve had a full body workout. Boxing is top
notch for endurance training and boosting that
metabolism. It shapes the muscles and tones
the abs. Last but not least, it is great for the
winter! Most facilities are indoors so you avoid
the winter chill but keep off the pounds.
There are several boxing gyms in the city.
My gym of choice is over near Fells Point off
Broadway Street- Baltimore Boxing owned by
former boxer Jake the Snake. Several levels
of skill can be found there- those looking to
compete and those looking to stay in shape.
Everyone is friendly, non-judgmental and
willing to give pointers. In Federal Hill, KnockOut Fitness is also a great choice. I have less
experience here but have used the facility a few
times and it definitely has the tools and staff to
get the job done.

A new art exhibition recently opened at the Metropolitan
Coffee House &Wine Bar, 902 S. Charles St. in Federal Hill.
My eclectic body of work includes still life, life under the
sea, mountains, troubadours, abstracts and several scenes
painted on location during recent trips to Italy. The colors,
serenity and whimsy in my art work are reflective of my
joyous philosophy of life. If my efforts bring a smile to your
face, then my work is done. As a homeowner in Federal Hill for 16 years and the owner
of the former Lucinda Gallery, I am blessed to be able to
continue traveling and painting despite the loss of much
of my eyesight. After studying art in New York and California, my art has
been exhibited in several New York venues and at Lucinda
Gallery here in Federal Hill. I am privileged to have my
artwork hang in private homes in Federal Hill, across the U.S.
and in several other countries. A special thank you goes to all
of my wonderful customers and friends of Lucinda Gallery. I

Where were you born? Where did you grown up?
A suburb of Philadelphia, PA. I moved about 9 times but I call Pittsburgh, PA home. I was there for
all of high school and college.
Occupation?
Sales Manager for Ally Financial/Ally Bank plus several volunteer activities
What does South Baltimore mean to you?
Home and community.
What do you love about South Baltimore?
Location. It’s convenient for grabbing a bite to eat at all of the fabulous restaurants, just a short
walk away. It’s walking distance to attractions such as my happy place Oriole Park at Camden Yard.
Whether you are in the mood to visit a National park or your local swing set, nothing is too far away.
Favorite memory or story about South Baltimore?
The night my future wife yelled at me from the kickball fields at Riverside Park for delaying her dinner
at Don’t Know. The night ended with our first kiss on top of Federal Hill Park overlooking the city skyline. As an added bonus, watching
the Blue Angels perform from my rooftop deck.
What do you miss most about South Baltimore when you are away?
My home, not just the physical structure which I call home, but the area locations where I feel completely at home.
What do you want everyone to know about South Baltimore that they don’t already know?
I want everyone to know that everything that they do to make this a great neighborhood is evident that I am always excitedly telling those
that don’t live about all of the exciting going on’s in South Baltimore.
What is South Baltimore’s hidden secret?
Liv2Eat’s outdoor dining, it’s a hidden oasis away from the hustle and bustle of city life.
What are your hopes for South Baltimore?
Continued positive urban revitalization and new developments relevant to the population.
What do you hope about South Baltimore that will never change?
Hanover Street bridge – regularly I get the opportunity to practice my precision driving skills on it! I need to keep those ready to go!
Tell me something personal: How many kids do you have? What are your future family plans? Why did you decided to stay in the
neighborhood? What are your experiences having a family in the neighborhood? Did you activites change?
In 2004, I came to Baltimore on a corporate relocation, I thought that I would stay about 2 years and then move on. Charm City had other
plans for me! I was a single guy with a downtown bachelor pad enjoying all of the city nightlife and other activities that the city had
to offer. I decided to join a social sport and joined my now wife’s kickball team after meeting her at a young adult social at Holy Cross
Church. From there it was moving away from the single scene to the couple’s scene, transiting to more mature nights out in town and we
were exploring some new restaurants and venues. I then took my then girlfriend for a walk to Federal Hill Park to propose in the same spot
where we had our first kiss. (it was a love filled evening of Chinese carry out!) We got married and the rest is history as they say.
In 2013, I was blessed to welcome a new baby girl into my life. She changed life in many ways, one of which was making our house feel
a tiny bit smaller. As she start getting bigger, she needed more space to play and move. Additionally, we were considering if another child
might be a reality (ask that question again in 6 months to a year). We realized that if there were to be sibling for our daughter that we might
need a bit more space and we weren’t going to want to think about all of that while we were pregnant. We started looking at houses in the
suburbs, because many of our friends were making those moves, and that’s what you do after you have kids, right? It just didn’t feel right
for one reason or another, it just wasn’t feeling like home. My wife and I decided that we weren’t ready to leave the neighborhood where
we feel like we have evolved in our own lives.
This meant that we had the challenge of finding a house with enough space, but on our budget. We knew that this might take some time,
so we readied ourselves for thinking about seeing if we could find that perfect house in our perfect neighborhood. Well, we were lucky
enough to find a house that we love just two blocks from our old house, which is still in the place that has our hearts. This made it a reality to continue raising our daughter in the city that we love, because it has so much to offer both us and her too. There are more and more
families staying with us and all for their own reasons, but many for similar reasons as ours. We will take her to the park to play on the
playground, instead of a backyard, but we are ok with that because we have seen many milestones in those parks, which today includes
a happy toddler swinging for hours shouting “more pushy or higher” with the largest smile possible. We can’t wait to see what the future
holds for us in the place that has our hearts! This is a brief idea of why we have fallen in love in and with South Baltimore and she has
taken a hold of us!

What’s to Like?

A casual walk around our neighborhood is all it takes to answer the question, “What’s to like about Federal Hill?” Walk with
me now, Gentle Reader. Let’s see what there is to see….and to like.
We pause at Sam’s Bagels for coffee, sitting at the picnic tables which are front row seats for the free entertainment that is
The U-Turn Olympics. What is it about this intersection that marks such agitated indecision- even apparent panic- in so many
drivers? It’s as if the light ahead at East Cross Street constitutes some sort of looming police checkpoint or Syrian border
crossing, one that the U-Turn Olympian must not test, compelling that sudden jerk of the wheel, the incursion into the next lane,
the frantic, herky-jerky forward-and-reverse scissoring to get going the other way before all hell breaks loose. (Hurry! Hurry!
The urgency created by westbound traffic is essential for the dramatic tension in this unfolding drama.) The Fiats and Minis
usually make it in one neat, tight, arcing turn, but it’s the SUVs and out-of-towners whose laborious vehicular writhing attracts
the attention of front row diners at Regis….as well it should. That curb will only stop so much iron.
On the subject of Regis, this neighborhood reverie would not be complete without homage to Regis’ Peanut Thai Salad with
Tuna. It’s well worth an artless U-Turn from anywhere.
Let’s move on, Gentle Reader. Oh! Look up! “Is this an airshow?” you ask, and with good reason, for above us flies an endless
stream of heavier-than-air vehicles worthy Farnborough or Oshkosh: Jet Rangers, R-22’s, Euro-Copters, Huskeys, Piper Cubs,
Stearman biplanes…even the occasional exuberant Southwest pilot taking advantage of permission for a long, low, straight-in
approach to BWI. Hey, wouldn’t you? Fed Hillers don’t have to move closer to the airport to enjoy plane spotting; just sit up in
the park on a Sunday and you’ll see it all.
“And urns? Tell me about all of these lovely urns!” Well, Gentle Reader, our neighborhood is blessed with scores of neighbors
whose green thumbs are leveraged by the artistic sensibilities and civic-mindedness that manifest themselves in lovely sidewalk
gardens of every sort. Sandy, Rose, Peg, Sabino, and so many others- you know who you are, and so do we- that you take
greenery to the streets the way you do adds beauty
and the kind of individuality to our neighborhood
that makes us all better people, if not better drivers.
Or writers.
Of course I hear you asking, “But what about the
parking? Isn’t that a problem in Federal Hill?”
Many ask, Gentle Reader, but few understand; let
me try to explain. In the spirit of Dorothy’s epiphany
of how to get back to Kansas, the solution to our
“parking problem” is right where it’s always been.
Our “problem” is a precious gift, actually…a gift
of trust, of faith, of an abiding belief in the power
of “When”. “When” always happens. If we come
home late, we always, always find a spot when
it’s open, when it’s our time, when it’s right. Am
I right? “When” always happens, eventually, and
when we trust that “when” is in all of our futures,
the anxiety about parking dissolves….poof, gonezo, g’bye! So easy!
We have to head back now, Gentle Reader, but
I hope you’ll agree: living here is pretty keen.
Mostly, it’s the people. Let’s walk again sometime
soon.

The Wizard Puts Up Christmas Lights

It’s become something of a tradition in our little neighborhood of row houses not only to put up Christmas lights but to attempt some sort
of coordination in their display. The idea isn’t to challenge the really over-the-top neighborhoods-of-light in other parts of the city, but to
establish a recognizable, if modest, signature for our part of town.
Of course, with all the iconoclasts who live in this neighborhood, finding common ground as to what that signature should be is difficult.
Some people just want all-white lights strung through the sidewalk tree branches. Others really like the big, fat multicolored bulbs
outlining the doors and windows. Then there are the ones opting for colonial arrays of lemons, apples, and pineapples artfully stuck on
nail boards above transoms. Still others have lighted Santas climbing up lighted ropes halfway up the side of their houses.
Despite the best efforts of numerous well-meaninged neighbors to persuade each other through email, social media, and old-fashioned
stoop talking, the neighborhood has yet to reach general accord. In fact, people’s juices get fired up in early December to the point where
some blocks pit themselves against other blocks in a friendly, though sometimes intense, competition.
Such a situation can get out of hand—witness my neighbor, the Wizard Awry.
“What are we going to do? What are we going to do?” he yelled one day after banging on my door.
“What do you mean?” I asked.
“Are you insane? I mean, the block over there…” he pointed with his staff “…has Santa’s sled and reindeer strung right across the street!
The block over there…” he pointed again “…has Frosty the Snowman on every stoop! And then down there…” pointing once more “…
there are two giant Nutcrackers facing each other with a line of candy canes!”
I smiled. “Yes. Isn’t it great? Lots of fun.”
He looked at me like I’d just come out of jail.
“You are crazy, aren’t you? Don’t you see? They make our block look like, I don’t know, second rate.”
I shook my head. “That’s not true. Just look around. You can see people’s decorated trees through most of the front windows. Most of
them have pretty wreathes on the doors and gates. Some have those decorative cabbages out front. One or two have Christmas garden
displays. That’s not so bad.”
“Pah!” he said in disgust. “We can’t let those other blocks beat us. Don’t worry, though. I’ll take care of it. Just watch tonight.”
With that the Wizard Awry stomped off, stroking his beard, deep in thought.
“Uh oh,” I thought to myself—with good reason.
Precisely at nine o’clock that night the quiet of our block was broken with a loud bang. Now, we’re all pretty used to fireworks going off
not far away on New Year’s and the Fourth of July, and we usually don’t get too excited about loud noises. Something about this bang
was different—different enough to get a lot of the neighbors to open the doors. The tableau we all were presented was also very different.
Just a few points:
•
Sappy, ear-bug Christmas jingles echoed up and down the street.
•
Each individual house front was lit up in different colors that changed along with the jingles.
•
A small herd of actual reindeer moseyed up and down the sidewalks.
•
A ride-able miniature train choo-chooed between the reindeer.
Topping it all off, there was the Wizard Awry in front of his house, made up to look like Fat Elvis in a Santa suit.
“Isn’t this great?” he exclaimed gleefully, only to have his face drop when he saw all of us shaking our heads.
“But we’ll beat all those other blocks, don’t you see?” he said desperately, only to be met with a lot of mumbling.
The Wizard somehow doffed his Fat Elvis Santa get-up and stood up straight. “Okay, okay. Too much. I get it. But tell me this: What kind
of signature Christmas theme should our neighborhood have then?”
A neighbor girl went up to him and whispered something. All of a sudden the jingles, the lights, the reindeer, and the train disappeared—
to be replaced by one thing:
The lighted word “Peace” strung above the street.
