Welcome New Members
The 4th of July has already come and gone! Hopefully, many of you

were able to join the weekend festivities. The 4th is always a summer

many great days to come out and enjoy your club through golf, tennis,

Hopefully, many of you were able to attend the Summer Extravaganza
John and Debra Scott
with the Blues Travelers; what a spectacular event! The staff worked very hard to deliver an evening of fun and
they certainly succeeded. Also, the Member-Member golf tournament that followed the Extravaganza was also
a great success for our Members, and an event that will continue to grow in importance and significance here

at MCC. With all these events, the Board and staff receive a great deal of feedback from our members, some
solicited, some not! Nonetheless, we very much appreciate the comments, take them very seriously, and will use
the information to make positive changes to the events going forward for the entire membership.
On the theme of member feedback, we have received a number a comments on the re-built golf hole number
8. Generally, the feedback has been positive, but we continue to work toward improving the experience. The
board met with our golf course architect on June 17, and after extensive discussions, we collectively agreed to
“fine tune” the number 8 green. So, in late September, the architect and Golf Superintendent, Dave Swift, will
reduce the undulations and expand the footprint of the green with minimal cost and disruption to play on the
hole. Also, this fall on many of the holes on our course, we will be adding additional forward tee areas. The
purpose of forward tees is to shorten the holes to allow junior members and other players to further enjoy the
golf experience. It’s a nationwide trend and one that we are fully embracing.
Our annual Member Meeting will occur on July 28. It's an opportunity for members to gain a greater
understanding of club operations and to review the strong financial status of our club. In addition this year,
we will review and hopefully approve changes to our bylaws that have not been amended since 2007. The
purpose of the amendments is to effectively make our governance document consistent and current with the
2016 practices of our club.
Thank you for your continuing support of Minnehaha Country Club!
See you at the Club!

Minnehaha Country Club announces
that it has been awarded the prestigious
Distinguished Gold Club of the World
award, as determined by the annual
Distinguished Clubs of the World award
program conducted by BoardRoom
magazine, one of the most respected
trade publications serving private clubs.
What an incredible summer 2016 has turned out to be in South Dakota.
We hope you all enjoyed the celebration of the 111th Anniversary and the Summer Extravaganza on July 21.
We also know there is still plenty of pool, golf and tennis and outdoor dining time available for the rest of the
summer. With the extended summer, we have scheduled the junior programs well into August so the kids will
have activities to keep them busy until the 2016 – 2017 school year starts. The patio continues to be a great spot to enjoy breakfast, lunch, dinner. Join us
for a nice relaxing evening every Friday listening to music around the fire pit with pizza and flatbreads. Join us for as many opportunities as possible the
rest of the summer and all year long at Minnehaha Country Club.
As you all know, every August I publish a statement that I read while at a club management seminar in Saint Andrews, Scotland in 2008. Though
written in 1854, we feel as though there is a parallel to 2016 and the happenings around the world, especially when you reflect on the written words
(see below). I hope you feel the same way when you think about what a Club actually is and what Minnehaha Country Club means to you and your
family. We believe it is still fitting today and will strive to emulate its meaning. Remember in 2015, Saint Andrews finally voted to let women join the
R & A (Royal and Ancient) Golf Club at Saint Andrews. Thank you all for being part of “Your Club”.
A CLUB
Is a haven of refuge and accord in a world torn by strife and discord:
Is a place where people of quality gather to have fun and make friends:
Is a place of courtesy, good breeding and good manners:
Is a place expressly for camaraderie, merriment, good cheer and good will:
It humbles the mighty, draws out the timid, and casts out the sorehead:
And is one of the noblest inventions of mankind!
– St. Andrews, Scotland 1854

The June financial statement shows a very good month and July has been very strong as of the date of this publication. The member usage at MCC
continues to be at all time highs and we certainly want to thank each of you for your continued support of all areas at MCC. We ask each of you to
always “THINK CLUB FIRST” all the time every time.
The continued success of YOUR CLUB is dependent on the ongoing support from you, our members. We appreciate you and your input and
remember we want you to think of MCC as your “home away from home”. Enjoy the rest of this wonderful summer of 2016!
Good Health to All,
Ted

Remaining Projects in 2016
Lots of stuff to do yet this year but all of it will make a difference in 2017
internal drainage on the upper tee on #1, we also need to close this tee
and beyond. That pretty much sums up where we are currently, as we are
for several days and fix this problem. This could happen in late fall.
halfway through the 2016 golf season. This season has been exciting, as
many things have come together at once to finally bring your golf course

Over the past several years, I ride, walk and play the course and the lists
keep growing. I have tried the daily planner, the daily planner training and
voice recorders, but I feel that I am most successful writing lists upon lists
and updating the lists to keep track of the lists. This list system has peaked
and is now slowly dwindling each month. This means that a higher
percentage of our time spent on the golf course is maintenance related
and less associated with long term goals and projects. We are happy about
this, as a few short years ago greater than 1/3 of our time was spent on
long term projects. The daily conditioning and consistency will continue
to improve with more maintenance time devoted. The equipment fleet is
strong and efficient. It is a good time to play golf at Minnehaha.

• Overseeding and Sodding. We are converting your fairways to
bentgrass. Changing grasses on golf courses is common; how we are
doing it is uncommon. Changing grasses without closing the golf
course is uncommon. Both ways work, one just takes longer and
everyone can still play. We plan to address this process again in late
summer with some seeding, some sodding and some herbicide. Expect
minimal disruption.
• Details. We actually have over 1500 linear feet of stone curbing to
install along cart paths. This is a slow process, but we are looking
forward to the results.
• #12 Walk Path. Someday, the steep hill in front of #12 tee will be held

• Ron Forse has marked out 5 new forward tees that we plan to build in
late summer/early fall. They are on holes; #1, #3, #14, #16 and #17. Three
of these tees will be literally on the front of the fairways on holes #3,
#14, and #16 fairway. Having forward tees on the front of the fairway is
common on other William Langford golf courses.
• Drainage. We missed our opportunity for half of our planned drainage
this spring, but we will continue to plan for drainage pipe installation

the unwanted vegetation and install other erosion control plant
material until we find a solution.

Dave Swift – Grounds Superintendent
We held our 5th Annual Member-Member and 2nd Annual Summer Extravaganza in late July and what a BLAST it was
for all who attended! I sure hope you were one of the many who came out to enjoy the Blues Traveler concert, the awesome
food, fun with fellow members and the fireworks. This year’s Member-Member was also full to rim and we expanded the
field to accommodate the continued interest. We had 54 Member teams fighting it out for the championship and year-long
bragging rights. Congratulations to Derek Ohme and Drew Duncan for their victory. We also had a One Day Member-Guest, our two couples events and another
full month of Junior golf camps and play days. Wow, these kids have improved so much over the summer! We had great fields for all of the events and I hope you
were able to enjoy at least a few of these opportunities at the club with friends.
I cannot believe I am writing my newsletter and already talking about the kids heading back to school before long. I know for many of you, this
“summer milestone” marks the end of your golfing. WHAT?! Summer isn’t over! I have said it before and I will say it again, this just means you have more
freedom through the middle of the day! The course is usually wide open so you can get in a quick 9 or 18! Mother Nature has given us some great weather. The
temperatures have been exceptional all summer long and the course is in incredible shape. Come out and enjoy all of Dave’s crew's hard work. The rough is
thinning out, the fairways are spectacular and the greens . . . well, they are pretty good too (hard to come up with a word better than spectacular!). I look forward
to seeing everyone out at the club to enjoy the wonderful conditions of the course and the weather. We still have a couple of great events for you to participate in
over the next couple of months, so don’t forget to sign up in the Golf Shop. You can also sign up online (web.foretees.com/Minnehaha) or on your phone through
the ClubCentral by Foretees app.
Don't miss our annual “September SUPER SALE”! We're making way for our fall collections, so you can find clearance pricing on all of our mens and
ladies footwear and golf shirts. We’ll have Filson outdoor apparel available again for all of the outdoor enthusiasts, plus Peter Millar, Ralph Lauren, Fennec/Martin
and Nike for all of your other fall apparel needs.
I would like to congratulate Drew Duncan for his Hole-N-One on #17 during this year’s invitational. Also, Jeff Priebe on his first Hole-N-One (and
the first Hole-N-One on the new #8!) during our June 30th couples event. Jennifer Kirby followed it up with a Hole-N-One on #8 the very next day! One final
congratulations goes out to John Heisler on breaking 80 for his first time. He shot a 79! Way to go!
Special Reminders:
Ryder Cup Raffle: You are now able to sign up for the club’s Ryder Cup Raffle. We were able to get two (2) International Club Tickets for every day
at Hazeltine. We will do a drawing for all 7 days (Monday – Sunday). It is free to enter the raffle and then the winner will pay only the face value of the tickets to
redeem them. The going price for tickets on the street is around $1500 per ticket, per day. If you win these, you can spend all the money you are saving on all kinds
of Ryder Cup swag! Remember, you cannot win if you don’t enter.
Special Thanks and Good Luck to Ben! Our golf shop manager, Ben Merry, will be leaving us in August to pursue a Law Degree at the University of
Tennessee. I know you all wish him well and we wanted to make everyone aware of this great opportunity he will be pursuing. Thanks for a GREAT 2 years!
Tight lines and fairways,

MCC Automatic Payment Service
March 1 – August 31 • September 1 – February 28
The Automatic Payment Service makes paying your Minnehaha
Country Club bill even easier. By enrolling in this service, your
member bill will be paid each month automatically and always on
time. Each month you will continue to receive your MCC member
statement showing the amount due. On the 15th day of each
month (or the Monday following if the 15th is on a weekend), your
authorized financial institution will deduct the amount owing from
your designated account and your MCC member account will be
credited. This allows you adequate time to review your member
statement before it is paid.
Membership Resignation Policy
A member may resign by written notice to the Club. The effective
date and end of privileges will be determined by the following criteria:
MCC’s memberships are effective from June 1 to May 31. Requests to
reduce one’s membership from one of a higher level will be governed
by this same policy as well.
Member Event Cancellation Policy
All reservations made for club functions or holiday events that are
not canceled 24 hours prior to the event will be charged in full. For
example, if you reserve a table for 8 for Easter Brunch and only 6
people show for the reservation, you will be charged for 8 people. On
several occasions, we have reached our seating capacity and have not
been able to accommodate some members, only to have last minute
cancellations and no shows.
The benefits of signing up for the Automatic Payment
Service are: No Late Payments, No Checks, No Envelopes, It’s
Free, No Stamps, No Hassles, Saves Time.
If you are interested in the Automatic Payment Service, or if you
have any questions or need more information on how this easy
service works, you may pick up a form in the club office or call
Jerry Olivier at 605.336.1085.

The Buzz In the Kitchen
Bon Jour!
With the summer and all its marvelous glory coming to end,
other particular events open up. MCC has quite the lineup of
upcoming wine dinners and I’m still planning some cooking
classes. We’ll keep you posted on those dates and events.
The garden starts its second phase on some items and the third
phase on some others. I haven’t quite been able to utilize it the
way I want, but that will change soon with the later harvest.
Chef Paul, Chef Seth and Chef Bradley have been doing a
remarkable job with their team and will continue to get better as
the months pass.
7
For those that are leaving for their summer vacations, be safe and
we’ll see you when you get back! For those sticking around with
us, we’ll see you tomorrow.
Take care and Bon Appétit!
