A FIRST IN FRANCE
The iconic biathlete, Sylvie Becaert, retired from sport in 2010 after
the Olympic Games in Vancouver. In tribute to her excellent sporting
achievements, Le Grand-Bornand decided to christen their new
stadium in her name. It was officially opened in 2011. Sylvie has since
become ambassador of the World Cup event.
This is the first World Cup on French soil and the first
event on the World Cup circuit to take place at the
heart of an alpine village. A new page in the history
of French sport and an emotional moment for many
generations that longed for an international event
on home ground!
The event will take place at the heart of the Le
Grand-Bornand, close to the audience and the
fans. The resort will beat to the rythmn of the best
biathletes in the world.

Sprint event in 2003 and in the
mixed relay in 2009.
• Olympic medallist in Turin in 2006
and Vancouver in 2010.
• Winner of the World Cup Sprint
in 2003.
Amongst them, the French team, so successful at the
last Olympic Games in Vancouver, winning 6 of the
11 medal up for grabs! As a result the discipline has
become extremely popular creating a general desire
to discover the sport.
The French athletes are aware of this wonderful
opportunity to compete at home, a chance to race for
victory in front of their home crowd. Led by Martin
Fourcade, already a legend in his own, this talented
group continues to progress in the tailwinds of
Raphaël Poirée, Florence Baverel, Vincent Defrasne
and Vincent Jay. Their main objective this season,
the Olympic Games in Sochi in February 2014.
To celebrate the event, the resort will host the biggest
ever biathlon party. Its success is guaranteed by the
tandem Annecy - Le Grand-Bornand, a team that
have so often proved their capacity to organize great
sporting events such as the IBU Cup in 2011 and the
World Military Games in 2013. Annecy and Le GrandBornand are also the only two resorts in the Savoie
region to host the 100th Tour de France in July

The story began when one of the 15 largest alpine resorts in France,
Le Grand-Bornand, and the internationally renowned town of Annecy,
joined forces to offer France its first biathlon World Cup. An event
backed by the French Ski Federation and the International Biathlon
Union.

place on French soil but I am all the more delighted
for the biathlon World Cup in Annecy - Le GrandBornand, the first ever biathlon World Cup to be
organized in France. My joy and my impatience are all
the greater as our biathlon team is one of the best in

" Biathlon and Le Grand-Bornand is a story that dates back in time. In 1995, for the first
time in history, Le Grand-Bornand hosted the European Biathlon Championships at the
heart of the village. In 2011, in the new international stadium named after our Olympic
medallist, Sylvie Becaert, Le Grand-Bornand organized the finals of the IBU Cup. They were
a popular success and I remain convinced that the locals will rise to the challenge of the
World Cup with the same enthusiasm and passion for which they are renowned.

than 40 towns and villages in the region that are actively and voluntarily involved in the

In parallel to supporting local sports clubs, investing in sports facilities and local

(contributing to the vitality of Annecy), events like these also mobilize a number
of volunteers, a great force for our region. This World Cup event will once again

THE SYLVIE BECAERT STADIUM
UNIQUE IN FRANCE
Located only several hundred metres from the heart of the resort, the Sylvie
Becaert stadium is ideally situated at an altitude of 1000 metres. In accordance
with a strict programme for sustainable development, the new stadium is used
for a series of different events throughout the year: Tour de France, paragliding
landing spot etc.

class events, it is necessary to
obtain an A licence, delivered by
the International Biathlon Union
(IBU). The stadium in Le GrandBornand is the only one in France
to possess this particular licence.
• 80% of the facilities will be removed after the competition. Bridges and stands will be
dismantled.

An eco-friendly attitude
• During the competition, a shuttle bus service will run from Thônes, half way between
Annecy and Le Grand Bornand.
• The use of vehicles will be limited. Access to the competition ground will only be
authorized by shuttle bus or on foot.
• Recycling waste containers will be installed on site and recyclable plates and cups will
be used throughout the event.
An eco-friendly competition
The biathlon stadium perfectly integrates the surrounding natural environment.
Situated within the perimeter of a listed building, the stadium was built in collaboration
with the National Association of Architects.
The shooting wall, for example, was built from local stone in an attempt to preserve the
authentic character of the site.
By successfully combining tourism, alpine farming and the preservation of the
environment, Le Grand-Bornand has become a reference in the Alps. Yet another asset
to strengthen its position amongst the most beautiful winter sports resorts in France.

label awarded by ‘France Montagnes’, Le Grand-Bornand is also

come and encourage the world’s top athletes,

Initiation sessions
Because such an event creates a general
enthusiasm, initiation sessions will be organized
around the Stadium during the week of
competition. Professionals from the ESF French
Ski School propose to initiate the general public
to the joys of biathlon.
Volunteers
Volunteers play an important role in the
organization of a World Cup event. A stadium,
athletes, good organization but also a great
number of volunteers are essential to the
success of a World Cup event.
500 people volunteered to help a the final of
the IBU Cup in 2011 . Once again the resort will
seek voluntary help during the World Cup in
2013: VIP officials, stadium staff, ticket sales,
logistics and technical staff. Energetic and
motivated volunteers will come from the four
corners of the region and sometimes from even
further afield. Their objective: to share a human
adventure and great sporting experience.

Competition is inbred in Le Grand-Bornand! This theory was recently
confirmed by the line-up of 11 champions at the start of the competition
season. A record that makes Le Grand-Bornand the most represented
French resort on the international ski circuit, led by Tessa Worley, Giant
Slalom World Champion in 2013!

Bornand, shows kindness, pugnacity, talent,

most endearing champions of French skiing. The
reigning giant slalom World Champion learnt to
ski in Le Grand-Bornand. She grew up here and
comes back to relax between two competitions.

of water skiing. The girl from Annecy has
already won the most prestigious titles during
almost a decade of her high-level career. A
passion born from the pleasures of water and
skiing on Lake Annecy where she has always
