“Rather, when you hold a banquet, invite the poor, the
crippled, the lame, the blind; blessed indeed will you be
because of their inability to repay you."
Luke 14:13 -14
We have a difficult time with the concept of giving
without expecting something in return. Even when we
give to charity we often want something in return – a
raffle ticket, a dinner, or a chance to play golf. Yet, as
Christian stewards we need to remember that the true
reward for our giving awaits us in heaven.

MOYC Mtg., Parish Hall, 7:00PM
A few good men, women or families who are
EMHC’s and would like to help with assisted living or
homebound visits. Many different times available. Goal is to
“double up” with someone so you can split the load or take
over when someone cannot be there. Most people go to the
home or assisted living facilities or hospital once or twice a
month, you pick. Very flexible times. This is a rewarding
ministry where you meet with, pray with and bring Jesus to our
parishioners who are not able to get to Church. We need help
on Sundays and then flexible times during the week. Also can
use subs. Must be a commissioned EMHC.
I would also love to hear from drivers who are coming to
church on Sunday anyway and have an extra seat in their car
who could drop by and pick up parishioners who are not able
to drive to Mass. The parishioner will be flexible to your
choice of Mass, and will be able to get into your car with
minimal assist and, at worst, a folding walker or wheelchair.
This is an intermittent ministry that I get requests for
infrequently. I would like to know your choice of 1st, 2nd,
3rd , 4th or 5th Sunday of the month and will call you when
and if you are needed. Please contact Jean in the office if you
can help as an EMHC or driver 913-681-3348 or
[email protected].

-directors of youth ministry) will be offering events for this
age group. The middle school kickoff is to be announced.

We are in dire need for ushers at the 11:45am and 5:00pm

PUBLIC SQUARE ROSARY
September 3, Noon
Parking Lot
Currently, the United States is suffering from our country's
secularism attempts to remove God from our society. But
without God, where will our leaders get their wisdom to
solve the great issues we face today? We must counter
today's immoral and secularist trends with public prayers.
We must ask God, through the Rosary of His Most Holy
Mother to save America. Saint Louis de Montfort said:
"Public prayer is far more powerful than private prayer at
appeasing God and calling down His mercy in times of
public concern, tragedy and suffering”. Help pray for our
country by praying a Public Rosary.
The Public Square Rosary will be held at 12:00pm noon on
the first Saturday of each month. Come join us on
September 3. For question contact Dick Kane at
[email protected].
DID YOU KNOW?
We love to see families in church, however, we know that
little ones occasionally have bad days.
Ascension has a nursery available during 8:15am and
10:00am Masses for walking-age children free of charge.
Also, there is a cry room located in the back of the Church.

RISEN THE MOVIE
September 6, 7:00PM
Youth Ctr.
Risen is the epic Biblical story of the Resurrection, as told
through the eyes of a non-believer. Clavius (Joseph Fiennes),
a powerful Roman military tribune, and his aide, Lucius
(Tom Felton), are tasked with solving the mystery of what
happened to Jesus in the weeks following the crucifixion, in
order to disprove the rumors of a risen Messiah and prevent
an uprising in Jerusalem. Please register using the form in
the Ascent.
BIGGSTEPS 5K OR 10K RACE
Social Concerns Ministry
September 11, Races begin at 8:15AM
Offsite
Our own parishioners, Nate and Kelly Bukaty, run this fun,
family friendly morning to honor a friend who died of
cancer. Ascension Social Concerns is helping out this
wonderful cause in honor of all our parishioners who have
died from, are living with or survived any form of cancer.
We sponsor this run that funds cancer prevention education
and research. It is a super opportunity for your whole family
to participate in a 5K or 10K race, a family fun run or Kids’
dash, breakfast and fun! It occurs at the KU Edwards
Campus and the Indian Creek Trail so it is right in our
neighborhood (Quivira and 127th Street)!
Help the Sean D. Biggs Foundation take “BIGGSteps”
toward cancer prevention by participating or volunteering.
For more information and to register as a volunteer or
participant go to kcascension.org/Get Involved/Service
Opportunities/Care for the Sick/BIGGsteps.

BLOOD DRIVE
September 12, 1:00PM-5:30PM
Parish Hall
“Whatsoever you do to the least of my people
that you do unto me.”
Work of Mercy: Care for the Sick
We need donors! Be a “LIFE SAVER”, be a hero and give
the gift of life this fall. Reserve the date!!!
A 2007 University of Minnesota study estimated that about
one third of the U.S. population is eligible to donate blood.
However, the number of people who actually choose to
donate is far fewer. Currently, the Kansas City-based
Community Blood Center, which provides 70 area hospitals
with 3,600 units of blood each week, describes its supply as
critical; meaning the supply for hospitals and patients is
stretched thin. This limits elective surgery and can postpone
life saving treatments.
To make an advanced appointment go to kcascension.org,
then Get Involved/Service Opportunities/Care for the Sick/
Blood Drive or click on “Quick Links, Current Volunteer
Sign-ups,” on the Home Page or just walk in!!!

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED / GENERAL INFORMATION
MUSIC MINISTRY
Living our faith has a musical beauty all its own.
Liturgy is the ultimate spirituality.
The role of Sacred Music is to --edify (lift up) and sanctify ((us)
Music clothes the text and makes it integral to our prayer.
Church of the Ascension is rich with the time and talent given by our music volunteers. Each of our ensemble/choirs is a musical
family that prays together in song at weekly rehearsals and Sunday liturgies. These families want to grow! Their summer break is
nearly over, and now is a good time for new members to get involved.
The Spirit and Song Ensemble sings at the 8:15am Mass on Sunday mornings, and rehearses on Thursdays at 7:00pm. Dan Tira is
the director 913-451-2341. SASE is open to high school and adult voices.
The Ascension Adult Choir leads the 10:00am Mass, and rehearses at 7:00pm each Wednesday. This choir is open to high school
and adult voices, and there is an especially great need for male singers! Dorothy Brandwein conducts 913-681-3348.
The Joyful Voices Choir sings twice a month at the 11:45am Mass. They rehearse on Thursdays at 4:00pm in the church.
Children in grades 3 through 8 comprise its membership. Karen Kellerman leads 913-980-6391.
Spirit and Song Ensemble begins Thursday, September 7, 7:00PM
Ascension Adult Choir begins Wednesday, September 14, 7:00PM
Joyful Voices Choir begins Thursday, September 15, 4:00PM
All choirs are open to new members throughout the year, so “for God’s sake” please be open in prayer to the promptings of the
Holy Spirit. He just may want YOU in the Ascension Music Ministry!!
Any and all inquiries may be sent to Music Director, Dorothy Brandwein, at: [email protected].

FAMILY FORMATION
Do you want to be more involved in your
child’s faith formation? Ascension
Parish offers a program called Family
Formation which aims to equip parents
to be the primary educators of their children’s faith. It meets
on the first Wednesday of each month SeptemberMay. Children go to their grade level classroom and parents
stay and grow in their faith in the parish hall and then we
send home the next three weeks of lessons for you as parents
to do with your children at home. Last year we had 130
families participating.
Anyone who has children K-6 grade is welcome to be a part
of it. Please call the Youth Faith Formation Office for more
information 913-681-7683.
Please help. We are in great need of a
Catechist and Aide for both Pre-School
3-year old and Pre-School 4-year-old
classes. You only have to teach every
other week from 10:00am to 11:00am.
Please call us for more
information at 913-681-7683.

Church of the Ascension
22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time
August 28, 2016
WEEKLY PRAYER
Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time
Partying with Angels
Banns of Matrimony
While the first reading from Sirach and the Gospel focus on
humility ("Humble yourself . . . and you will find favor with
God" [Sirach 3:18] and "go and take the lowest place" [Luke
14:10], with a surprise reversal of the humble being exalted),
the reading from Hebrews surprises us in a different way. The
author uses apocalyptic imagery to show how much the
relationship between God and humanity has changed. He starts
with images of fire, storms, and trumpet blasts--images that
may remind you of an erupting volcano: something you want
to view from very far away. Even God's words brought fear
and trembling.
It may not be surprising that God is beyond human
comprehension, but Hebrews says no. God doesn't want to be
so far beyond us that we only approach in fear. Using more
images from the end-time, the author gives us a picture of the
baptized partying with angels and all the just who have died.
And of course God is the host. Let's look at some of those
images to see how our relationship with the Lord has grown.
The heavenly Jerusalem reminds us that the Church is our
home--not just our parish church building but the whole
community of faith. How "at home" are you with your fellow
parishioners? Do you regularly gather with that family for
prayer? A church community can be a place to support those
who are sick or jobless or depressed. It is also a place to be
supported, to see God's love in action. The angels in Hebrews
may be a symbol of that support.
The "firstborn" and "spirits of the just" could remind us of
those who went before us and now rest in the Lord. They had
their own struggles in life, and now live in glory. They help us
to keep our true goal in mind, to remember the real meaning of
life, and to look forward to eternal life with hope.
Jesus came to show us how much God loves us and how close
God can be. When he shed his blood on the cross (the final
sign in our reading), he renewed the covenant with God's
people. So we no longer have to accomplish our salvation; it
has already been offered to us by Jesus' death and resurrection.
We accept that gift not just by a verbal statement of faith, but
by a life lived as Jesus showed us, in love of God and our
neighbor.

MARRIAGE MINUTE
August 28
SCHOOL
ACS is an exceptional place for faith formation, even over
the summer! Families were encouraged to continue growing
in virtue through fun activities which were planned by our
virtue committee. At the end of last school year, students
were given virtue bingo cards. Each time they competed an
activity, they were able to cross out the activity on the card.
Activities included things like going to adoration during the
week, or helping an elderly person with a task, or helping
around the house without complaining. The cards had many
choices! Once a row was filled on the card, the student
earned a chance in a drawing for prizes! This was a super fun
way to encourage virtuous behavior while away from school
for the summer. Way to go ACS!
What is the opposite of love?
If you said hate, you’re probably in agreement with most
people, but John Paul II had a different opinion. He wrote that
love’s opposite is use. In today’s Gospel, Jesus asks his
disciples to examine their intentions as they invite guests to a
party. Did they invite someone only to get an invite in return?
It may seem strange, but even in marriage, we need to guard
against using one another. We can check the purity of our
intentions by asking ourselves,
-Am I performing a kind act in order to get a specific
response from my spouse?
-Is this action coming from a joyful heart, or out of a desire to
not “be in the doghouse?”
-Do I keep track of good deeds, words or even intimacy?
