News from the Courts
Dear Doublegate Members,
July marks the midpoint of summer tennis for our club. All the
tennis programs, events, and play are still going strong. Even the
hot days and rainy afternoons have not managed to slow us down.
The tennis highlight of the month was an away trip for our top
junior players. FSU coaches worked with Doublegate to offer a
high performance week of tennis at FSU.
July 13th through the 17th, ten of our academy players attended
the high performance camp. They were able to experience a
week of training with Division 1 coaches and players while participating with over 90 other kids. The level of play was very high considering some players were even ranked as high as 1 and 5 in
the state. The week also included evening activities including swimming, movies, go carting, laser tag, bowling, and volleyball.
However, the focus was on tennis with over 6 hours of play each day.
The week finished with the Davis Cup Championship on the last day. The 90 plus players were grouped on 6 different teams
representing 6 different countries. Each country would play each other trying to amass as many games as possible in order to
win the overall championship. The routing and shouting of countries could be heard all over the campus. Graham Ford represented Zimbabwe and although his team did not win it must have had an impact on him. Graham's first day back at Doublegate
Academy had him shouting "Zimbabwe" every time he hit a forehand. The week was certainly a great experience for our players and they are all looking forward to attending in future years.
This August we will be hosting our annual adult tennis tournament fundraiser. We will be raising money for our pro tournament in November. The event will include a lunch on our new deck at the tennis courts. The deck will be a nice upgrade to the
tennis court area of the club. Players will enjoy relaxing after matches under the oak trees and parents will be able to sit and
watch in comfort. We have come a long way in one year and
the future of tennis is looking bright at Doublegate.
All the best,
David Buerkle, Tennis Director

News from the Turf
August is here and so is the heat and humidity. The course has begun
to thrive. The Bermuda grass loves this weather. We will be mowing constantly
throughout the next eight weeks.
The fairways have really filled in and become dense, from the aerification. We have top-dressed the approaches with sand, and will do the tees as
well. This ensures a smooth firm surface to play off of.
The rough is being maintained weekly, so that it does not become too
penal.
South Georgia can produce some very strong storms at times. We have
dealt with the wrath of them lately. We have removed a number of pine trees
and parts of some oaks in the recent weeks. Hopefully we have seen the worst
of the weather.
The greens are fully healed and rolling well. We continue work at producing a consistently smooth and speedy
surface. The routine of topdressing and vertical mowing the greens on Mondays is going great. We will switch to a
different sand in the upcoming weeks to create a plate effect on the green surface. You will see a firmness return to
these greens that has not been present for a long time. I truly believe August
is the month that will reveal the best conditions of the course since my tenure
began. I am looking forward to the amount of play and general busyness of
the course.
The staff has been working hard to beautify some eyesores around the
course. You will see some new beds and limbed trees as you play.
I want to thank my crew for a lot of hard work throughout this summer. We will continue to do a great job and make strides to become even better. Please come out and enjoy the grounds.
Best Regards,
Matthew Ayer, Golf Course Superintendent
