President’s
75th Anniversary Report
by Bob Nicholson
Seventy-five years of continuous operation warrants a
review of the sound foundation upon which our club was created. The first sentence in the Club’s inaugural annual magazine reads as follows…“Your Club was organized in the fall
of 1936 with about one hundred members and during the
winter increased to about one hundred fifty.”
“The Sun Valley Ski Club” it has remained as we celebrate
our 75th anniversary year in 2011. The club has expanded and
contracted over time, but throughout it all, it has remained
a vibrant, viable, healthy organization, being ever true to the
mission statement in the opening paragraph in its constitution which reads:
{
}
“To encourage proficiency and enjoyment
of skiing and other winter sports with their
attendant relaxations; to promote good
fellowship; to encourage the construction
and maintenance of ski tows, ski lifts and
all such labor saving devices; to appreciate
comfortable accommodations, good food
and drink and by all other means to take
advantage of the beauty of the mountains in
winter and any other time.”
As the Sun Valley Resort arose on the property of the former Brass Ranch, the founder, Mr. Averill Harriman, formed
the Sun Valley Ski Club as a means to help market the resort
and increase traffic on his Union Pacific Railroad. A review of
the first year’s membership roster reveals the marketing to the
east coast and the Hollywood crowd in California was very
successful.
On February 6, 1937, we were admitted to membership
in the Pacific Northwest Ski Association. Upon receipt of that
recognition, Chairman Harriman and the Board of Governors proceeded to plan an open downhill and slalom tournament to be held at Sun Valley and to be called the “SUN
VALLEY INTERNATIONAL OPEN Downhill Slalom and
Combined.”
As the date of the SUN VALLEY INTERNATIONAL
OPEN approached, a stroke of good luck arrived in the form
of a telegram to the chairman from the Dartmouth Outing
Mrs. W. A. Harriman with Dick Durrance, winner of the United States
National Amateur Championships and Sun Valley International
Open, both events Downhill, Slalom and Combined.
Club asking “if Sun Valley could include in our races the
UNITED STATES NATIONAL AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP, Downhill Slalom and Combined.” This request was
brought about by the unfortunate snow conditions in the
east at that time. The races, managed by the club, were a
huge success. Racers from all over the country and Europe
competed in that inaugural event. Indeed, the club’s first
annual magazine is largely devoted to descriptions of the racing event, including a very complimentary article written by
Governor Alex Bright of Boston. Needless to say, with that
excellent first year publicity, the reputation of the Sun Valley
Resort and the Sun Valley Ski Club were well established.
Mr. W. A. Harriman and his associates sure knew how
to nail a mission statement that would withstand the test of
time. Further, they demonstrated they knew how to successfully carry out that mission. To them and to those who
followed to keep our club together, we are eternally grateful.
Not many ski clubs can boast of a 75 year survival.
The Sun Valley Ski Club and the Sun Valley Resort have
continued positive growth over the years. Under the excellent, caring stewardship of Messrs. Harriman, Janss, and
Holding, the resort, which is the first destination ski resort
in the United States, is today one of the finest year round
mountain resorts in the country. Indeed, to many of us, the
Sun Valley Resort is the finest. Our ski club is privileged to
be a part of this beautiful and historically significant setting.

Let’s Put on A Show
by Steve Slivinski
It was a beautiful Sun Valley day in the winter of 2009 when Bob Sarchett
said those famous words, “Let’s put on the 2010 Masters Nationals!” My heart
froze, my mind cringed, and dark clouds filled the sky. My thoughts went
back to the 2001 Nationals and the 2005 World Criterium with much sweat,
toil, and tears. However, like a Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland movie, Bob’s
words can be infectious. Before I could yell “Stop the presses!,” the Sun Valley
Ski Club was signed, sealed, and delivered for the 2010 Skier’s Edge Masters
Nationals.
As it turned out, I shouldn’t have feared because the 2010 version of the
USSA Masters Nationals turned out to be one of the most well organized and
fun projects the Ski Cub has ever put on. With people like Drury Cooper,
Frank Ward, Gene Timmons, Gretchen Palmer, Bob and Lynne Nicholson,
Nick Maricich and his troop of ski instructors, Michel Rudigoz, Mike Wrobel
and the Sun Valley race department, the Sun Valley catering department, and
a whole boat load of Ski Club volunteers, the Nationals worked like a welloiled machine. Monday, the first day of competition, started off with a weather
challenge: lots of heavy wet snow. Through a herculean effort, the first leg of
the Super Combined, the Slalom was completed. The next day the weather
wasn’t much better. Conditions were too dangerous to run the scheduled Super
G, so like all good racers, we went powder skiing. On Wednesday, the weather
cleared, and we were literally off to the races. Over 200 racers sped down the
Super G course on Warm Springs. For the next two days, groups swapped
Slalom and GS runs in near perfect conditions.

Our awards parties were held in the elegant Limelight Room at the Sun
Valley Resort. We started our evening festivities on Monday with a lavish
welcome party. The competitors were welcomed by the mayor of Sun Valley,
Wayne Willich. Then Olympic alpine commentator, Tim Ryan, took over
the podium. To say that he lit up the room with his personal comments on
the Vancouver Olympics would be an understatement. The highlight of the
week’s party scene, however, was the appearance of the “Fuxi Girls.” Directly
from Broadway, or was it Salzburg, these four scantily clad dancers brought
down the house. Champions from Sun Valley included: Robin Sarchett 5
Gold medals; Nate Swing 4 Gold; Matt Murphy 4 Gold and 1 Silver; Carl
Rixon Jr. 2 Gold, 1 Silver, and 1 Bronze; Jean Rudigoz 1 Bronze; John
Campbell 4 Silver and 1 Bronze; Bob Dreyer 2 Bronze; Ed Fenwick 2 Gold;
Bob Sarchett 1 Gold, 1 Silver, and 1 Bronze; Jim Tallackson 1 Silver and 1
Bronze; Drury Cooper 4 Silver; John Droege 4 Gold; Virginia Reed 1 Gold
and 3 Silver; Anna Droege 5 Gold; Nancy Auseklis 5 Gold; Nancy Dreyer 2
Silver and 2 Bronze; Heidi Flood 1 Bronze; and Ericka Hogan 5 Gold.
Congratulations to all of the Sun Valley medal winners and
congratulations to everyone that participated. You are all winners! The 2010
National Masters Championship in Sun Valley was by all accounts the best
ever. It was a proud moment for the Sun Valley Resort, the Sun Valley Ski
Club, and everyone involved.

The key for maximum
performance & enjoyment -
R ace Service for everyone!
by David ‘Pez’ Peszek
Whether an athlete, parent, master’s athlete, or
a ripping little pom/grom, the concept of ‘race
service’ can & will improve your experience on
the hill. ‘Race Service’ is attention to every detail
in your equipment, leaving nothing to chance, in
pursuit of top performance & enjoyment.
freely, rebound appropriately for skill level, and not have an adverse
effect on alignment. From there, expect boot sole canting [lateral
alignment] & fore-aft balancing [delta angle alignment effected
through binding shims.] At this point, no matter who you are, you’ve
been dialed in for maximum fun, performance, and comfort. Every
option and skill available in ‘race’ bootfitting can & does benefit the
recreational or avid skier, and can be adjusted to meet your needs.
What exactly is “race service for the whole family?”
‘It’s listening to and understanding the whole picture,
then providing the correct service and products to fit
the need’ says Olin Glenne, Sturtevant’s hardgoods
manager. “So whether we’re talking about making the
fastest skis for racers, or getting mom & dad correctly fit
in new boots, we can do it, and we can do it appropriately
to your goals & needs” states Rob Santa, owner of
Sturtevant’s and long time Hailey local. “It’s also critical
that the ‘tech’ part stays with us, and isn’t there to confuse
the costumer - we like to stay goal focused and keep things
simple, even if we are working at the highest technical level”
adds Dave Peszek, a new addition to the Sturtevant’s team.
Ski Tuning - The best skis come out of the wrapper at only 70%
of their potential. Whether you are an athlete or Mom & Dad
cruising Dollar Mountain, bringing your skis up to their full
potential will result in immediate and noticeable performance
gains, along with more smiles per mile! There’s a reason why
top athletes have their own ski service - to keep the equipment
dialed in and performing consistently. A recent national trend,
most notably in larger established ski towns [like Ketchum,]
is the advent of season’s tuning passes for locals and frequent
visitors, allowing folks to get their gear dialed in and keep it
that way. Top ski tuners will re-finish skis [even brand new]
to a much higher level than the factory puts out [similar to
how skis are prepared for magazine tests or ski racers.] This
refinishing process usually involves finishing the shape of

Sun Valley Ski Education
Foundation’s Olympic
Development Team
Foundation:
The Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation has a long history
of producing US Ski and Snowboard Team (USSST)
members and Olympians, but times have changed. Five
years ago the SVSEF adopted an initiative to identify by
criteria, and then fund those athletes who had a legitimate
chance at being named to the USSST or were already on
the USSST. These athletes became members of the Olympic
Development Team (ODT).
The ODT has two distinct athlete profiles: those in ‘the
gap,’ not named to the USSST but on the development
path to the USSST, or those on the USSST. Both athletes,
those in ‘the gap’ and on the USSST, devote countless hours
(600-800 hours annually) of their lives to training to reach
peak performance; therefore, having little time to find
work to support financial needs. (Special note, the USSST
does not completely fund many athletes. In fact, for some
team members the funding is minimal, if existent at all).
Funding ODT athletes during this period was limited and
not consistent. Yet, even with limited funding, many of the
ODT athletes reached their goals, and five short years later,
in 2010, the SVSEF realized the fruits of a simple initiative:
two current athletes and one alum named to the Vancouver
Olympic Team.
For 2014 the goal is even loftier: put six ODT athletes on
the USSST Olympic Team at Sochi, Russa. ‘6 @ Sochi’ is
the new mantra.
Along with goal of ‘6 @ Sochi’ the SVSEF formed a
new organization with one simple mission: develop
the necessary funding to support ODT Athletes. The
Olympic Development Team Foundation (ODTF) is that
organization. The ODTF is a separate SVSEF fundraising
vehicle with a goal of raising a minimum of $200,000
annually to provide concrete support to the athletes poised
to become our next Olympians.
This summer, 14 athletes were named to the 2010-2011
Olympic Development Team, representing all four
disciplines: alpine, cross-country, freestyle and snowboard.
To learn more about the Olympic Development Team
Foundation and how you can support the Olympic
Development Team athletes, go to www.svsef.org and look

LOPPET?
Dear Ted,
Just curious, what is the origin and correct spelling of the
word “loppet,” as in our beloved SVSC cross country race,
the Billy Goat Loppet? Please do tell!
Dear SVSC,
So the question really is to “lip it” or “lop it,” and I have the
answer. Although you’ll find it spelled/misspelled any number
of ways, the correct spelling—so as not to upset Thor, the God
of Thunder—or any true believer in the fine art of cross-country
skiing, which every person who says that he or she is a skier will,
no doubt, have many fond memories of—slipping and sliding
through the snow-covered forested trails of a winter wonderland,
be it in their youth or their senior years—will recall the thought,
if not expressed in real time, that this damn trail is getting to be
longer than I signed up for, and thus came the declaration “it
should be lopped, so let’s lop it.” But then some ‘disfunctionary,’
not to be confused with someone who really gave a damn, came
along and presented himself as some kind of an expert and
professed that the word should be pronounced with gusto and
thus should be spelled “loppet.” And so it was, and has ever since
been, according to Ull, the mythical Norse god of all skiers where
ever they may be, who also suffers from numerous misspellings as
with Uhlr, but lest I start to wonder, I shall end this bit of drivel
here and now.
Did I take too long on this?

Q& A with Olympians…
Graham
Watanabe
by Dick Dorworth
Graham Watanabe is Sun Valley’s best known
and most successful snowboarder. The 28 year old Sun
Valley native was a racer who switched to snowboardcross
(SBX) in time to compete in the 2006 Olympic Games.
He repeated and competed in the 2010 Olympics. He
is perhaps best known for his reply to a question from a
reporter about what it feels like to be in the Olympics:
“Try to imagine Pegasus mating with a unicorn and the
creature that they birth. I somehow tame it and ride it
into the sky in the clouds and sunshine and rainbows.
That’s what it feels like.”
Graham is a hard man to pin down, but in July we
finally talked with him by phone in Salt Lake City, where
he is attending Westminster College in preparation for an
eventual plan to “go into graphic design.” He answered
our questions with humility and humor and a careful
thoughtfulness.

Morgan
Arritola
Morgan Arritola is a busy young woman who travels as much as eleven months a year as a member of the U.S.
Cross Country Ski Team. She competed in the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver, won three gold medals in the 2004
U.S. Junior National Championships, and has five silver
medals from U.S. National Championships. A graduate of
Sun Valley’s Community School, Morgan is the most successful Nordic ski racer to ever come out of Sun Valley. We
caught up with her last May at Tully’s Coffee in Ketchum
and were able to ask her a few questions which she answered
with insight, a smile, wit, honesty, humility, and warmth.
What was your favorite Olympic moment?
Walking in the opening ceremonies. I had always watched
them on TV and to actually be a part of them was really
cool. I felt like I had finally reached a goal I set as a kid, and
it was an experience I will never forget. Not many people get
to be a part of such a thing, and it was really amazing.

• Member of U.S. World Cup SBX team since 2004
• 3 time World Championship team
• 2 time Olympian (Torino 2006, Vancouver 2010)
• First U.S. male to win FIS World Cup SBX

What was your favorite Olympic moment?
It was a toss-up between coming into the finish corral after
the qualifying round and seeing my name in 2nd place, and
sharing the whole Olympic experience with my family.
What was your least favorite Olympic moment?
It wasn’t actually during the games, but the bitter/sweet
qualifying process and seeing some of my National Team
teammates not make it, while I did.
Who do you most admire?
My dad, Scott Watanabe, for his caring nature, his ability to
think and see outside the box, his humbleness and his constant support for me and others while maintaining a good
balance of work and play throughout his life.
What does Sun Valley mean to you?
Home.
What is your favorite pastime besides boarding?
I just like to get outside.
How long will you compete?
As long as I’m having fun and staying healthy, but I imagine
I’ll compete with myself my whole life.
What are your long-term school/career plans?
That’s what I’m still trying to figure out.
How many hours a day do you spend training?
During heavy training season, three to five hours a day. The rest
of the year … it depends.
What are you going to be when you grow up?
My life goal is to be a good husband and father.
What question would you ask your fellow Sun Valley
Olympian, Morgan Arritola?
I would not ask her if she wanted to go for a ski. I don’t want
to get my butt kicked. But I might ask her if she wanted to go
snowboarding.

Dick Dorworth has spent most of his life in the mountains of Western America. He was born in Reno, Nevada, in 1938 and
grew up in the Sierra Nevada and graduated from the University of Nevada in 1963. He has lived, worked, skied, and climbed in
Europe, Asia, and Alaska, as well as North and South America. Dick ski raced extensively from 1950 through 1965 and set the world
record for speed on skis (106 mph) in Portillo, Chile, in 1963, a record that lasted for one year. He taught and coached skiing for
many years and was the men’s coach for the U.S. Ski Team and Director of the Aspen Mountain Ski School. He has been a climbing
guide for the Yosemite Mountaineering School, Shasta Mountain Guides, and Exum Mountain Guides.
Dick is a free lance writer, whose work has appeared in many publications including Ski, Skiing, Powder, Snow Country, Mountain
Gazette, Men’s Journal, Climbing, and Backpacker. He lives in Ketchum, Idaho, where he skis most days during the winter, either on his
favorite mountain, Baldy, or in the backcountry. In the summer he climbs.
Dorworth is a reporter and regular columnist for the Idaho Mountain Express in Ketchum. He is a member of the Sierra Club,
but thinks deep ecology is closer to the mark. His first book, “Night Driving,” was published in October of 2007 by First Ascent
Press. His second book, “The Joy Of Skiing,” is scheduled for publication by Western Eye Press this year. A copy of his unpublished
book about his three years as a speed skier in Portillo, Chile, and Cervinia, Italy, “The Straight Course,” resides in the U.S. National

Morgan Arritola
Morgan Arritola
Birthdate: May 13, 1986
Hometown: Sun Valley, Idaho
• Started skiing at the age of 16 with the SVSEF
• Current team: U.S. Ski Team
• Third ranked woman in the U.S.
• Three-time U.S. Junior Champion
• Four-time silver medalist at the U.S. Senior Nationals
• 2010 Olympian, Vancouver Olympics
What was your least favorite Olympic moment?
Physically, my body didn’t show up for the Olympics, and I had
to drop out of the 30 km classic race. It is the hardest thing to
quit a race--any race--much less the Olympics. Every race is a
race with the same value, but that was a rough day.
Who do you most admire?
My mom, Donnale Brown of Fairfield. She always supported me
and worked very hard to make sure I had what I needed. She’s
my role model in life. I also most admire my teammates who are
involved in what is not a glorious sport in America, and we do it
in a clean way, which not every country can say. In many ways,
right now my teammates are my real family.
What does Sun Valley mean to you?
Home. Whenever I come back it’s supportive and comfortable,
even though it’s a hard place for an athlete to live because it’s
expensive. But I get some help from the U.S. Ski Team,
from the SVSEF, a few sponsors, a few jobs watching
animals while their owners are away, and I get by.
I love it here.
What is your favorite pastime besides skiing?
Soccer. Art. Drawing. Reading. Bungy jumping in New
Zealand. Just being outside.
How long will you compete?
I take it one year at a time. I love to train and race, but …
What are your long-term school/career plans?
I will definitely go back to school when racing is done. I
like to do one thing at a time and do it well, so I can’t mix
school and racing. I like animals and the environment so
I’ll probably pursue some field connected with them, and
I like to work.
How many hours a day do you spend training?
It depends on the day and the season, but usually between
one and five hours a day. There is more training in summer and fall, and during the season there is more racing
and less training.
What are you going to be when you grow up?
Hopefully, a good person. I’m very honest and I want to
be happy and to love whatever I’m doing. Actually, I want
to be the world’s oldest bungy jumper.
What question would you ask your fellow Sun
Valley Olympian Graham Watanabe?
What are you going to be when you grow up?

K
aroline Droege’s resume is one of diversity and accomplishment with an athletic focus.
It reads like a guidebook for growing up, participating, contributing, enriching and being
enriched by, and, mostly, reveling in the classic life of a Sun Valley skier and outdoorswoman. Her parents, John and Anna, are long time Sun Valley Ski Club members and well-known
Master’s Alpine ski racers who hold several National Championships between them. Born in
Germany, Karoline moved to Sun Valley with her family when she was 11.
Since last March when she gave birth (three months prematurely) to twin boys, Axel and Finn,
her life has, to put it mildly, changed drastically. Karoline, 40, does not have a lot of time for
outdoor activity, casual socializing, or answering the questions of pesky reporters; but in August
we managed an hour together on the porch of her Ketchum home while the twins slept under
the watchful eye of Grandma Anna.
Karoline is friendly and looks you in the eye while telling you what she means, and her vibrancy
and alertness never betray her major sleep deprivation for the past few months. It was a pleasure
to talk with her.

SVSC
Karoline Droege
You were born in Germany and learned to ski in
Europe. What were your parents doing?
Dad was working as a civil engineer for the U.S. government
in Munich. Mom was being a mom. Each winter we rented an
apartment in Kitzbuhel, and we skied there at every opportunity.
Do you have German or U.S. citizenship, or both?
U.S. and Germany don’t allow dual citizenship. My mom always said that the Germans figure, “You’re either all German or
you’re nothing.”
What caused John and Anna to move to Sun Valley?
Dad retired in 1981 after 28 years with the government. It was
either Corona del Mar where Dad grew up and owned a house,
or here, where they had friends and we could ski. They decided
we would be a mountain family.
What’s your ski racing background?
I started here with the Sun Valley Ski Team when I was 11. I
raced for the SVSEF and competed in 6 Junior National Alpine
Championships and 3 National Alpine Championships. I raced
for the University of Utah while I was getting my B.S. degree
in Exercise and Sport Science, with a minor in Psychology, and
then a masters in Physical Therapy. That was 1989-93.
What’s your ski coaching background?
After college I worked for Scott USA. Then I went to work for
Scott Bike when they bought Schwinn and moved to Boulder,
Colorado. Another bike industry job had me move to Minneapolis. It was in Minnesota that I started coaching in the winter
of 1994-95. I coached for Team Gilboa, a big team on a tiny
mountain with 150 feet vertical. It was a good beginning, but
Minneapolis was not for me. I moved back to Sun Valley and
coached part-time for the SVSEF at every level, from A to D
teams, during ’96 to ’03.
I’ve been responsible for donor relations and some marketing.
Motherhood means I’ll be much less involved on a day-to-day
basis with the SVSEF.
What does Sun Valley mean to you?
Home. I learned after Minneapolis that there’s no better
community for me than here. In the flatlands of Minnesota, I
learned that I’ll always be a mountain girl.
What does the Sun Valley Ski Club mean to you?
The ski club represents the history of ski racing in Sun Valley.
All of the junior racing here is a product of the Sun Valley Ski
Club. After some years of mutual neglect, the ski club started
contributing to its scholarship fund within the SVSEF again.
This will make a big difference to deserving young racers. It’s
great to see the SVSC and SVSEF collaborating more on their
common goal of supporting the ski racing and mountain culture. I hope we can do even more in the future.
Besides skiing, what are your favorite activities?
Mountain biking, road biking, and other outdoor stuff.
Would you rather road or mountain bike?
Mountain bike, especially around here where we have some of
the best trails on earth. But I suspect that now with the kids,
I’ll be doing more road biking with the chariot attached.
What does your husband Chris O’Donnell do?
He’s an electrician with Wood River Electric.
How has becoming the mother of twins changed
your life?
I have no time. Days disappear. We started out staying in the
hospital for 87 days before we could bring them home. Ask me
that question again in six months.
How did your parents influence your path in life?
They taught me to enjoy the outdoors and to love skiing. They
instilled in both me and my brother John a sense of the need
and value of honesty, hard work, and responsibility.
Are you still working as a physical therapist?
No. I have my license and am keeping up with my continuing
education, but the only practice I do is when I run into clients
at the post office, on the chairlift, or Atkinsons’, and they ask
for advice.
What’s your history with the Sun Valley
Ski Education Foundation?
From 1981-89 I was a SVSEF athlete. From 1996 to 2003 I was
a coach. In 2006, I joined the Board of Directors, and for the
past two years I’ve been Director of Development which means
What are your personal future plans as an athlete?
To find my athleticism again. Return to mountain biking and
to racing for the fun and personal challenge. Maybe an occasional Alpine ski race.

Who do you most admire?
My mom. For her hard work and dedication to family.
She’s the salt of the earth.
What’s your favorite thing about Sun Valley?
The opportunities to be outdoors. The mindset of my friends
and family who live here--not to be rich, but to live rich lives.
What’s your least favorite thing about Sun Valley?
The lack of opportunity for good paying jobs for younger
generations.
What do you want your children to be when
they grow up?
Responsible. Well-behaved. Happy. Living a rich life through
family and whatever they enjoy doing. I look forward to
raising them in this mountain culture.
What question would you ask your parents,
John and Anna?
What’s the key to living as rich and full a life as you
have lived?

The Inside Edge

Squat: If you are going to pick one movement to perform,
the squat is first on the list. It is a full body exercise and is very
demanding. Begin with the bar on your back and squat down
while maintaining a slight arch in your lower back to the point
where your upper legs are at least parallel to the floor.
This depth will ensure that your glutes and hamstrings
will be incorporated in the movement. 3 sets x 10 reps,
or 4x8, 5x5, 6x3.

Swiss Ball Toe Touch:
Start out in plank push up
position with toes on the ball.
While keeping the knees
straight, slowly touch a toe to
the ground and return to
the ball alternating with each
leg. This exercise works 360
degrees of the core and
stabilizers. Start with
3 sets
x 20
reps.

Glute Hamstring
Machine: This exercise is
essentially a hamstring curl, but
you are curling your upper body
rather than your feet. The only
movement is in the knees and not
in the lower back, which would
be a hyper extension. It is much
more aggressive than a standard
lying hamstring curl. This exercise
can be performed with body
weight or by holding a weight.
The prime movers in this exercise
are the hamstrings with the lower
back and abs doing some major
stabilization work. 3 sets x 10
reps, or 4x8, 5x5.

Social VP Report
by Lynne Nicholson
Lynne and Bob Nicholson at the Dinner Dance
The 75th Anniversary of the Sun Valley Ski
Club happens this coming ski season! Our ski club
is a big part of the history of this valley, and we
should all be very proud of our club. This magazine
you are reading has been published annually since
the beginning of our club except during WWII.
So, our magazine has chronicled the events relating
to our club for many years.
Last season those of you who participated in our
social events would have enjoyed a variety of parties
and venues. This coming 75th anniversary season
will even be more amazing. Look for some nice
gifts for the upcoming Reunion Week beginning
Sunday, January 30, 2011.
After the opening of “Old Baldy” for
Thanksgiving 2009, the ski club had its traditional
winter Kick-Off party at the Sun Valley Inn on
Sunday, December 9, 2009. The club was treated
to a sumptuous and eclectic buffet dinner. The
winners of the Lowell Thomas award were unveiled.
Congratulations Dick and Patti Moulton for your
long history and dedication to the Sun Valley
Ski Club.

Our next event, the ever-popular Soup Social,
occurred in January at the wonderful American
Legion Hall. Thank you great volunteers for your
delightful soups and desserts.
Reunion Week followed a couple of weeks later
with the opening Reception at the beautiful Sun Valley
Club. What a great venue!! Monday at the stunning
Carol’s Dollar Lodge our wildly popular Austrian
Night took place with a tasteful sampling of Bavarian
fare at the buffet. Tim Eriksen, accordion player,
entertained us. Tuesday, our competitive members
schussed their way through the race gates competing
for the coveted Bradford Cup. On Wednesday, the
Tollerups sponsored the Tollerup Tour at the Nordic
Center. Following the tour, the Tollerups hosted
lunch for all participants. Wednesday afternoon
the Sun Valley Ski Club held its annual business
meeting. General Manager, Tim Silva, spoke to the
club. On Thursday evening the club held its signature
dinner dance in the Lodge Dining Room with an
elegant plated dinner and beautiful music by Alan
Pennay, Jeff Rew, and songs by Cheryl Morrell.
Friday was a busy day--a morning of skiing-with-thepresident followed by a nostalgic lunch at the historic
Roundhouse and then a hosted tea at the lovely home
of Ross and Martha Jennings. Whew! What a week
chalked full of fine foods, wines, and activities!
Our intrepid snow shoe members had a great
adventure at the Boulder Mountain Yurt. We started
from Billy’s Bridge and trekked a couple of miles to
the yurt where we were wined and dined by Scott and
Anne Mason of the Ketchum Grill. Everyone had a
marvelous day.
The Sun Valley Ski Club’s final winter season
social gathering was held at the Roosevelt Grille. It’s
an understatement to say Tom Nickel and his staff
put on one heck of a party. The many tasty food items
were gobbled up by all.
June arrived and it was time to dust off the bikes
and hiking boots and put on the sunscreen to gear
up for summer. Ski club members gathered for a
few hikes: one at the White Cloud Trail followed by
OFF THE HILL
kick-off party
a picnic lunch at Boundary Park; one on good ole Bald
Mountain in honor of Steve Slivinski’s birthday (Steve
provided champagne while we all enjoyed lunch on the
stunning Round House deck); and the third hike took
place at Titus Lake. Some of us hiked the total loop while
others hiked to the lake and then returned the way we had
come. The hike was followed by a great lunch at Galena
Lodge.
Lynn Bockemohle led two great bike rides, one to
Bellevue from St. Luke’s WRMC parking lot with a stop
on the way back at CK’s for lunch, and the other ride left
from the SNRA traveling to Galena for lunch and riding
back in the afternoon.
During August the ski club held its largest summer
party at Apple’s Bar & Grill. Hank and his staff of one
(Frannie) put on a smashing BBQ which included grilled
chicken breast and tri-tip steak, plus great side dishes.
Some of our helpful members donated cookies for our
dessert. Poor Hank had all of the tables nicely set with
cloths and Mother Nature dumped a rainstorm on his
hard work, but the storm passed and we had a terrific time.
At the end of the summer, ski club members gathered at
the Silver Creek Preserve Visitor’s Center for a float down
Silver Creek. We put in at Stocker Creek aboard canoes
owned by the preserve and floated downstream viewing
wildlife and fishermen and women. After a memorable
trip, we re-grouped for a picnic on the deck. What a serene
and beautiful place. Members paid for the outing, and the
money was donated to the preserve.
As you can see, the ski club had some great happenings.
I hope you were able to attend some of the events.
I look forward to seeing all of your smiling faces at our
upcoming 75th Anniversary. This winter season promises
to be a very special time and a remarkable 75th Reunion
Week! Don’t dare to miss out on any of the parties, races,
and activities!
Cheers!
