California Department of Fish and Wildlife
officers Ryan Stephenson and Timothy Little

The awards acknowledge state employees for
acts of heroism and bravery.
Officer Stephenson and Little both received
the Gold Medal for their “Special Acts” defined
by the program as, “an extraordinary act of heroism by a state employee extending far above
and beyond the normal call of duty or service
performed at great risk to his/her own life in an
effort to save human life.”
On Sept 12, at approximately 3 p.m., Stephenson was patrolling Lake County when the
Valley Fire ignited. The fire had just consumed

Stephenson raced ahead of the inferno to
warn people about the fire and help them evacuate so they wouldn’t be trapped by the flames.
Working door to door, he had evacuated several homes and escorted eight people to safety
when one of the residents realized their neighbor
had been overlooked.
The neighbor, an 88-year-old wheelchair
bound woman, was still in her home, lying on the
couch, unaware of the approaching fire.
Stephenson quickly returned to her street,
which was now engulfed in flames, identified the
woman’s house, entered, and found her asleep
on her couch. She was unable to get out on her
own, so Stephenson carried her in his arms to
his patrol truck.
As he was getting ready to leave, the woman
told him she was worried about her dog. Stephenson then went back into her home and

the Burney Patrol Division initiated a probation search at a Burney
motel after being told
Steven Arthur Scott, 25,
Ashley Janell Bonsey,

Green, 18, were temporarily residing there.
Scott and Green are
currently on probation
and Bonsey had an outstanding arrest warrant
for theft.
Deputies entered the
motel room and immediately located a large
amount of illegal drug
paraphernalia, concentrated cannabis, methamphetamine and a
small butane honey oil
lab in the kitchen, said
Sgt. Marc St. Clair.
Also present in the
motel room was a
female infant.
Scott and Bonsey
were arrested for manufacturing illegal narcotics, felony child endangerment, drug paraphernalia, possession
of illegal narcotics and
probation violation.
Green was arrested

All three subjects
were transported and
booked into the Shasta
County main jail on the

Shasta County Children and Family Services was notified and

She would be ‘bored to tears’
if she stuck to one style of art
Story and Photo
By SUSAN HOGUE
Citing “motivation and inspiration from people, nature, color, form,
crazy ideas and other artists,” Burney
resident Barbara Turner works every
day at her art, expressing herself in a
wide range of mediums and subject
matter.
Variety is something of a mantra
to her, with her admitting “I would be
bored to tears if I stuck to one style.”
And it is that variety of styles, in
addition to the outstanding quality of
her work, that sets Turner’s expressions apart from the usual.
She doesn’t hesitate to fill a canvas
with multiple portraits of her 20-yearold cat, Popeye, or to render a prizewinning painting of an elderly Navajo
woman, which took first place at the
Inter-Mountain Fair this past summer.
She then may turn around and produce a softly rendered ocean scene
reflecting a golden sunset, or a purely
geometric and colorful American
Indian “sand-painting” design on her
canvas.
That ocean sunset painting, by the
way, has been donated to the Intermountain Artists Association for a
money raising raffle.
Noting that she’s “not much into
abstract, non-objective stuff, just
throwing paint onto the canvas,”
Turner pointed to a picture of a car
she did this year.
“I took a picture of a car over at
the Rex Club,” she said, “and then
painted the front corner of the car
and caught a reflection of the Alpine

Mayers hosts Health Career Days
Mayers Memorial Hospital District hosted the first of their three Health Career Days at area high schools last week at Burney High School, with staff
representing more than 15 departments. Mountain Valleys Health Centers
also participated. The entire student body was involved in the program
and talked to staff to learn about the variety of employment options in
the healthcare field. Organizers Val Lakey, director of public relations, and
Libby Mee, director of human resources, said the event was intended to
show students the jobs available with varying degrees of education and
qualifications. Students were required to ask questions in order to be able
to participate in a drawing. Other events are scheduled for May 20 at Fall
River High School and May 25 at Big Valley High School.
Her lifelong love affair with art
-From Page 1A
Drive-In across the street.”
It turned out to be a good
example of the attention to
detail in her work, with the
reflection rendered in mirror-like detail on the car’s
chrome bumper.
Turner has had a “lifelong love affair with art
and creativity,” she said.
Born in Alaska with
Aleut heritage, Turner
said art runs in her family,
noting the framed polar
bear drawing done by her
father.
That “drawing” ability
is beautifully represented
in Turner’s own portrait
work, especially that of
an American Indian man
done in pencil on paper
several years ago.
She also enjoys drawing pictures of animals
like her cat, Popeye, and
her miniature Schnauzer,
Spike.
Other favorites are tree
frogs, deer, eagles, doves
and such wild life as is visible from her dining room
“studio” which overlooks
Burney Creek.
Her
dining
room
evolved into studio space
with the recognition of its
wonderful light source
from windows all around,
in addition to the “nature
study” outside those windows.
She finds the large
dining room table is perfect for laying down her
painting surfaces, allowing her to work in comfort
and stability.
She also admitted to
being the person responsible for geometric patterns painted on the top
rails of her mismatched
dining chairs, giving them
the look of a “set with variety.”
Turner has, over the
years, shared that penchant for geometric-patterned chairs by donating the finished products
to various money-raising
events in Burney, particularly to the annual “Chairity Auction” which benefits
Intermountain Hospice.
Her “fun with chairs”
may well have been influenced by her Associate
of Arts degree in Interior
Design earned years ago
at American River College while living in Sacramento.
That degree came in
handy, too, in l978, when
she and her husband,
Jerry, bought their small
house backing up to
Burney Creek, and then
proceeded to remodel it
to its present state, much
larger than the original.
That purchase and
remodel cemented Burney
as “home” for Turner after
many years living everywhere from Alaska and
Washington state to Arizona and New Mexico.
Now, in addition to
her art work at home,
Turner admits she “loves
to socialize with friends
and family,” noting membership in Intermountain
Artists, where she paints,
creates coiled clay items,
and teaches crochet, plus
regular meetings with
friends for playing cards
or bingo.
She is glad, too, for
close association with
sons Mike and Joe, who
live with her, and for frequent contact with daughter, Trina.
Having retired after a
stint in real estate sales
and 15 years working at
the Burney post office,
Turner now thoroughly
enjoys her time creatively
pursuing the admonition on a plaque over her
home entry door, “Wish it.
Dream it. Do it.”
It is, she says, something she plans on doing
for a long time to come.

Spring Cleaning?
The photo above shows the two winning classes at Fall River Elementary – Melinda Booker’s 3rd

Stephenson, a 2009
graduate of Fall River
High School, began with
CDFW in August 2013
with his first assignment in
the City of Clearlake, Lake
County, where he continues to patrol.
On Sept. 12, at about
3 p.m., Little was working
safety patrol in the town of
Cobb during the Valley Fire.
Little entered a home
where he found an elderly
woman trapped with her
11-month-old granddaughter.
Little also learned that
another elderly woman
was trapped in her house
and needed serious medical attention. Little’s heroic
acts saved the lives of two
women and one infant.
Thanks to the efforts of
local students at Fall River
Elementary and Fall River
High School along with
the help of Ray’s Food
Place “stuff the bus bags”
and Mayers Hospital food
donation box, an all-time
collection record of just
under two tons (3,850
lbs.) of non-perishable
food items was collected
for the Fall River Community Food Pantry store
house (the shelves and
freezer are full).
These items will be
used to help feed over
800 individuals in the Fall
River Valley and Little
Valley areas during 2016.
Once again the Intermountain area shows
what a caring community
can do to help its residents, friends and neighbors when they need
some assistance, noted
event organizers.
The
two
winning
classes at Fall River Elementary were Melinda
Booker’s third grade and
Roxanna Shaffer’s sixth
grade classes.
For their efforts they
were treated to a thankyou celebration and prize
cups supplied by Safeway
of Burney.
Thanks once again to
the students, teachers
and community members
for helping the Fall River
Community Food Pantry
provide a helping hand to
its residents in need.
The Food Pantry is a
non-profit
organization
with an all-volunteer staff
made up of representatives from many of the
churches in the Fall River

visitors winning both games, 10-7
and 6-4, respectively.
The Bears now hold the top
spot in the league standings at
5-1 with an overall mark of 12-41. The Raiders slip to fourth place
with a record of 4-5, 9-8 overall.
In game one, the Bears
claimed a 4-0 lead in the top of
the third inning. The Raiders cut
the margin in half with Jason
Searl and Chris Semer scoring
in the bottom of the third and one
in the fourth innings, respectively.
The Bears rallied for four runs
in the fifth and the Raiders countered with a four-spot in the home
half to keep pace.
The Raiders loaded the bases
with no outs. The Bears tried to
limit the damage when Semer hit
a ground ball to short. The Bears
short stop missed the tag on
Kaden Tiran running to third and
followed with an errant throw to
first, allowing two runs to score.
Dominic Gensaw scored on a
passed ball and Brandon McFarlin hit a ground ball to short, plating Semer to make the score 8-6,
Mt. Shasta.
The Bears scored two more in
the sixth and threatened more.
Genshaw snagged a line drive
and doubled off a runner at
second base to end the threat
with Bears leading 10-6.
Jason Searl legged out a single
to short to leadoff the bottom of
the sixth and scored on a twoout double from Tiran to cut the
margin, 10-7.
The Raiders started their final
at-bat with Semer lining a single
up the middle, but the rally stalled
there with closer Myles Deleon
striking out the side to preserve
the Bears win.
Semer went 2 for 4 with two
runs scored and Tiran had two
hits with a double
In game two, the Raiders
had one bad inning allowing the
Bears to plate five runs in the third
inning, which proved to be the difference.
The Raiders scored two runs in
the first inning for the early advantage. The Bears took advantage
of some Raider miscues to take a
6-2 lead with five runs in the third
and one in the fourth.
Burney countered with two
runs in the bottom of the fourth
to make it a two-run game, 6-4,
Bears, where the score remained.
Bulldogs sweep Cougars;
Bears come to town Friday
with title hopes on line
The Fall River Bulldogs will put
their title hopes on the line Friday
with the Mt. Shasta Bears coming
to the McArthur field. The Bears
hold a one-game lead in the
Shasta Cascade League standings and the Bulldogs need at
least a split to remain in the championship hunt.
The Bears (5-1, 12-4-1)
bumped the Modoc Braves (4-2,
12-3) with double dip sweep on
April 19 and took two from the
Burney Raiders (4-5, 9-8) on to
claim the top spot. The Bulldogs
(7-2, 12-5) can take the pole position with a sweep over the Bears
on Friday, but would need help
with a split.
Fall River will end the regular
season May 3 with a one-game
showdown with the Burney Raiders. The Bears will end the year at
Trinity on May 5. Modoc remains
in the chase with games against
Etna (3-3, 6-13) and Weed (0-6,
0-13) remaining.
The Bulldogs are 12-2 in their
last 14 games with the two losses
coming at the hands of the Modoc
Braves. The ‘Dogs traveled to
Weed on April 19 and dispatched
the host Cougars in a league doubleheader, 14-0 and 16-1, respectively.
Game one was a short affair
with the Bulldogs plating all their
runs in the first three innings. Fall
River scored two runs in the first
inning and eight in the second for
a 10-run edge. The squad added
four runs in the third, then closed
out a five inning mercy-rule victory.
Thomas Markham was the winning pitcher, yielding one hit with
three strikeouts in three innings
of work. Sergio Jimenez closed
out the game-one win with three
strike outs.
In the dip, Fall River chipped
away for the lopsided win, plating
six runs in the seventh inning to
cap the day. The Bulldogs scored
in every inning, scoring four in the
fourth to take an 8-1 lead.
The Bulldogs used four pitchers in the contest, yielding two
hits along the way. Dylan Rainwater earned the win. Robee Knoch,
Gavin Dobson and Jace Neugebauer finished out the rotation.
Burney sophomore second baseman Dominic Gensaw

diamond. Also pictured is Burney senior Vance Lankford
backing up the play.
The Fall River softball team
know they have targets on their
back with an undefeated record,
and with the end of the regular season approaching, league
opponents are seething to break
the egg.
The lady Bulldogs traveled to
Weed for a league double dip with
the host Cougars on April 19. The
Cougars look like easy prey on
paper with just two wins on the
season, but nearly pulled off the
upset of the year to cap the day.
Fall River took game one in dominant fashion, winning, 16-5. However, the Cougars proved to have
some bite in the dip with the visitors escaping with a 6-5 victory.
Fall River coach Jeremy
McFarlin said the challenge from
the Cougars is a good thing with
Shasta Cascade League title contenders, Mt. Shasta and Burney
remaining on the schedule.
“We crushed the ball in the
first game,” said McFarlin. “In the
second, Weed just played a great
game and made every play possible, it seemed like.
“At the end of the day I think it
was good for us. We got the win
and it was really exciting.”
In game one, Katie Policastro
put on a hitting clinic, going 5 for 5
at the dish with two doubles, two
homers and six RBIs.
“She (Policastro) would have
had three home runs at any other
field,” said McFarlin. She had an
amazing game.”
Policastro hit a RBI double in
the third inning, a solo blast in the
fifth and a three-run jack in the
seventh.
Laci Denny tossed a complete
game, striking out batters against
one walk.
Policastro led the charge in
the dip as well, going 3 for 4 with
two doubles and two RBIs. Alicia
Reynoso and Trinity Markham
each had two hits with a run
scored.
The Bulldogs (9-0, 19-0) got on
the board with Policastro knocking in Saydee Pevehouse for a
1-0 lead in the first inning. The
Cougars (0-6, 2-13) countered in
the bottom frame. Leadoff hitter,
Skye Berstein ripped a double
and scored on a fielder’s choice
to knot the score at 1.
Fall River added a run in the
second. Trinity Markham hit a
leadoff single and scored on a
two-out knock from Tori Policastro
(sister) for a 2-1 edge.
The Cougars squared the
board in the bottom of the third,
following another leadoff double
from Berstein.
Fall River added two runs in the
sixth for a 4-2 lead. Denny scored
on a passed ball and Markham
tagged up on a shallow pop fly
in right field, caught the second
baseman.
The Bulldogs tacked on two
more in the seventh. Hallee Olsen
and K. Policastro hit back-to-back
doubles for a run. Then with two
out, the Cougars committed their
only error of the game allowing
Policastro to score for the 6-2
advantage.
The Cougars rallied with two
out in the bottom of the seventh to
score three runs. Rachel Michelon
ripped a triple to right and scored
on a single from Abby Dixon to
close the margin, 6-5.
Fall River will be at home
Friday with the Mt. Shasta Bears
(3-1, 5-5) visiting McArthur.

on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a
trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest
bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of
the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior
lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying
off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the
property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding
liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title
insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult
either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than
one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale
date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee,
beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The
law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you
and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether
your sale date has been postponed, and if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for
the sale of this property, you may call 800-280-2832 or visit this Internet Web www.Auction.com , using the file number assigned to this case CA1500272195 Information about
postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled
sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web
site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. If the
sale is set aside for any reason, the Purchaser at the sale shall be entitled only to a return of
the deposit paid. The Purchaser shall have no further recourse against the Mortgagor, the
Mortgagee or the Mortgagee’s attorney. Date: First American Title Insurance Company 6
