Photography Workshop with Amri Ginang Pertubuhan Komuniti
Photography Workshop with Amri Ginang
The Communications and Media Department had put together a Photography
Workshop for 10 volunteers and staffs of the Malaysian AIDS Council. This workshop
was put together to enhance these photographers capabilities and taking their
photography skills to the next level. The technical and the theory part of the workshop
was held at the Malaysian AIDS Council office and, for an outdoor practical session, at
Titiwangsa.
The workshop started with the essential camera setting, exploring what their cameras
can do. Later on, the participants learned about shooting strategies, light controling and
the ins and outs of capturing high-quality photographs. The day ended with image
editing where photographs can be enhanced and transformed to the desired perfection.

We were very delighted to see our photographers making the most out of this workshop to improve their photography skills.A great
picture tells a thoudsand words. Having strong, impactful, expressive images are especially crucial for an organisation like MAC to
convey our message effectively.
Trainer – Amri Ginang
Born in Sabah Malaysia, Amri studied photography in London and later worked as inhouse photographer for commercial studios in London and Stockholm. His early images
were characterised by a preference for black and white, which continues to comprise 50%
of his work today. Amri is now based in KL.
Amri is also a long-time partner of the Malaysian AIDS Council and has helped to
photograph many great images.
Pertubuhan Komuniti Intan (PKI)
In 2000, a group of professionals felt the need to have an association in Hilir Perak
to help people living with HIV (PLHIV). This group included doctors, lawyers,
bankers and others. PKI was then formed on the registration with Registrar of
Society in 2001. Initially PKI had no permanent office, not until 2003. Before that,
all meetings were conducted at members’ homes. On affiliation with Malaysian
AIDS Council, the first budget was only RM6,000.00 as it had no project
programmed. Its first programmes in 2005 were Outreach to SWs and Drop-inCentre with total budget of RM60,000.00. PKI’s budget for 2010 was RM 110.000.
For 2011 it has budgeted for NSEP and MSM besides Outreach to SWs and
Hospital PLHIV Peer Support. Approval on these programmes/budgets are still
pending at time of writing.
PKI has always believed that reaching out to youths at schools is one of the
essential ways to create awareness of HIV/AIDS. It carried out this outreach to
schools with the cooperation of Health Department Hilir Perak. Besides
HIV/AIDS, anti-smoking is also emphasized. PKI has covered most of the
schools and with many schools having reached out twice.
PKI office serves also as drop-in for clients who require counselling . Instant Mee
is made available for jobless clients. Drug addicts are encouraged to take up
methadone treatment programme. PKI has helped 25 such people to take up this
programme with good results. Having recommended them into the programme,
PKI continues to monitor them to ensure they adhere to it.

PKI is always keen to take part in any programmes which enhance knowledge on HIV/AIDS for its staff and members, particularly
those organized by MAC and Health Department. Without fail, PKI has been invited to take part in the Annual World AIDS Day
organized by various district health departments. Six monthly health screening on the SWs and clients is carried out with cooperation
of the Health Department. HIV Rapid Test (VCT) is also available at the PKI centre.
PKI has been supervised by a group of responsible Executive Committee members and dedicated staff. The Executive Committee
members are elected biennially. PKI’s wish is to set up a Shelter Home for PLHIV (women) in 2012. It will be the first Shelter Home
in Perak. To also reach out to as many youths and fishermen as possible, as they are one of the vulnerable or high risk groups. PKI has
also applied to Income Tax department for Tax Exemption Status. It would ease a lot of PKI’s financial constraint if the application is
successful. The ultimate wishes of PKI are helping our country reduce the spread of HIV/AIDS and make the lives of PLHIV and
clients better.
