SLEATER KINNEY
Sleater-Kinney is the first effort from the group, recorded by Nick Carrolat 486 Victoria Street in Melbourne,
Australia, and produced by TimGreen and the band at the Red House in Olympia, Washington. The album
was originally released in 1995 by the independent queercore record label Chainsaw Records. The line-up
featured Corin Tucker (vocals, guitar), Carrie Brownstein (guitar, vocals) and Lora Macfarlane (drums). “While
their same-sex one-on-ones aren’t exactly odes to joy, they convey a depth of feeling that could pass for
passion.” [Grade: A-] - Robert Christgau, Consumer Guide

CALL THE DOCTOR
Call the Doctor is Sleater-Kinney’s second studio album. It was produced by John Goodmanson and released on March 25, 1996 by Chainsaw Records. The album is often considered to be Sleater-Kinney’s first
proper album because Tucker and co-vocalist and guitarist Carrie Brownstein left their previous bands,
Heavens to Betsy and Excuse 17, at the time of its recording. The line-up featured Corin Tucker (vocals,
guitar), Carrie Brownstein (guitar, vocals) and Lora Macfarlane (drums, vocals). Call the Doctor appeared
at number three in The Village Voice’s “Pazz & Jop” critics’ poll for 1996. In 2010, the album was ranked
number 49 in the list of the 100 greatest albums of the nineties by the editors of Rolling Stone. “Trades sexworker role-playing, doll parts, gender-bending, and other common female-rock tropes for stories of everyday struggle [...] Sleater-Kinney proves that punk still offers new ways to say no” - Johnny Ray Huston, SPIN

DIG ME OUT
Dig Me Out is the third studio album by Sleater-Kinney, originally released on April 8, 1997 by Kill Rock Stars.
The album was produced by John Goodmanson and recorded from December 1996 to January 1997 at
John and Stu’s Place in Seattle, Washington. Dig Me Out marked the debut of Janet Weiss, who became the
band’s longest-serving and last drummer. Dig Me Out made several publications’ best album lists. The album appeared at number four in The Village Voice’s “Pazz & Jop” critics’ poll for 1997. In 2001, Spin placed
it at number 19 on its list of “50 Most Essential Punk Records”. In 2003, the album was ranked number 272
on Rolling Stone’s list of “The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.” In 2005, the album was ranked number
24 in Spin’s “100 Greatest Albums, 1985–2005”. In 2012, Spin also ranked it at number 74 on their “125
Best Albums of the Past 25 Years”. In 2008, the song “Dig Me Out” was ranked number 44 in Rolling Stone’s
“100 Greatest Guitar Songs of All Time”. “Now [delivers] the punch their words describe...If [Sleater-Kinney]
wanna be our Simone de Beauvoir, Dig Me Out proves they’re up to it.’ [9/10] - Ann Powers, SPIN

THE HOT ROCK
The Hot Rock is the fourth studio album by Sleater-Kinney, originally released on February 23, 1999 by Kill
Rock Stars. It was produced by Roger Moutenot and recorded at Avast studio in Seattle, Washington in July
1998. The Hot Rock reached number 181 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart and number 12 on the Heatseekers Albums chart, becoming the first Sleater-Kinney album to enter the charts. The Hot Rock appeared at
number 23 in The Village Voice’s “Pazz & Jop” critics’ poll for 1999. Similarly, Spin placed The Hot Rock at
number 18 in its list of “The Top 20 Albums of 1999”. In 2002, Rolling Stone ranked the album at number
17 on its list of “Women in Rock: The 50 Essential Albums”. “The expansive new sound gives Sleater-Kinney
room to experiment with their Husker Du-style storytelling... They’ve earned the right to keep reinventing
themselves”. - Rob Sheffield, Rolling Stone “Tucker explores what her voice can do when it’s not in overdrive, stretching vowels like a religious supplicant or spewing prosody like Patti Smith. At the same time,
Brownstein blossoms as a singer herself [...] braiding lines with Tucker so artfully the result sounds like the
voicings of a single restless mind”. [Grade: A] - Will Hermes, Entertainment Weekly

received a nomination for Outstanding Music Album at the 12th Annual Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against
Defamation Awards. The Village Voice placed it at number 10 in its 2000 “Pazz & Jop” Critics’ Poll. “The

THE WOODS
The Woods is the seventh and final studio album from Sleater-Kinney, released on May 24, 2005 by Sub
Pop. It was produced by Dave Fridmann and recorded from November 2004 to December 2004 at Tarbox
Road Studios in Cassadaga, New York. The Woods reached #80 on the US Billboard Top 200 chart and
#2 on the Independent Albums chart. The album appeared at number four in The Village Voice’s “Pazz &
Jop” critics’ poll for 2005. “They bash Eighties nostalgia, tell a feminist fairy tale and even quiet down for
a couple sensitive love songs – needed breaks from music so intense you wonder how they can contain
its explosiveness.” [100 Best Albums of the 2000’s] - Rolling Stone “To survive these days, you have to
be either suicidal or superficial. Sleater-Kinney, meanwhile, get by simply sounding fucking supersonic.”

In The Magic Shop
Sean Costello was a brilliantly talented blues-based musician whose deeply soulful singing, songwriting
and guitar playing crossed effortlessly between genres. Sean entered the scene as a child prodigy, and
soon became regarded as a torchbearer, one of the leading lights of his generation. Sean seemed to have
the world at his door when he left us far too early on April 15, 2008, the eve of his 29th birthday. It wasn’t
until after his death that many of us learned of his profound struggles with bipolar disorder, also known as
manic-depressive illness. Sean’s passing ignited a desire among his friends, fans and family to keep his
personal and musical spirit alive and to translate the human side of his suffering into action that will help in
research education, outreach and treatment efforts for bipolar disorder. 100% of profits from this album will
benefit The Sean Costello Fund for Bipolar Research, a living testimony to Sean’s spirit. In The Magic Shop
is Sean Costello’s previously unreleased 2005 studio album, produced in New York City by his longtime
friend, advocate and collaborator, four-time Grammy Award winner Steve Rosenthal, in his recording studio,
The Magic Shop. This is Sean Costello at his best, performing his dynamic original compositions and wellchosen covers with band mates Paul Linden, Melvin Zachery and Ray Hangen, along with a few guests.

Holiday Friends
Arena Rock
Major Magic
Although Astoria, Oregon is best known to multiple generations of pop-culture observers as the cinematic
setting of the ‘80s cult classic The Goonies, the rugged riverfront city now has another distinction: as the
home of the fab new pop-rock combo known as Holiday Friends. On its consistently uplifting debut album
Major Magic, the spirited quintet—singer-guitarist Scott Fagerland and singer-keyboardist Jesse Wityczak,
who share most of the band’s songwriting duties, plus Scott’s brother Jon Fagerland on guitar, keys and vocals, bassist Zack O’Connor and drummer Joey Ficken—deliver ten joyous new tunes that strike a decisive
blow for the enduring values of infectious melodic hooks and emotional engaging lyrics.

Intensity Ghost
Intensity Ghost is a follow-up to last years critically acclaimed Solar Motel album, which made year end lists
at The New Yorker, Uncut Magazine and Popmatters and provoked ecstatic comparisons; from Television
and Neil Young & Crazy Horse to Richard Thompson and The Grateful Dead. Solar Motel came together as a
solo album but the band Forsyth assembled to tour the record - bassist Peter Kerlin, guitarist Paul Sukeena
(Spacin’), and drummer Steve Urgo (ex-War on Drugs) - took things to another level and quickly became a
powerhouse. Forsyth brought the group into the studio in late 2013 to capture what became Intensity Ghost,
a 5-track masterwork of grace and power.

New Age Music Is Here
Mysteries is just as it implies. A few months ago the felte label received an anonymous demo accompanied by
a photo of 3 figures, faces covered like some sort of futuristic druids. To this day the label still doesn’t know the
group’s origin, but the joy of discovering this music unimpeded renders this fact almost irrelevant. One thing is
certain, New Age Music Is Here glows with exotic, crunchy, muscular, expressive pop music built around vocals
and drums, rather than the big synth or guitar riffs prevalent today. Almost like a psych-rock, cyborg, 50’s doowop Alice Coltrane if you will. Is it truly new age? We definitely haven’t heard much like it.

fierce energy and body shakin’ that The Shivas are known for, You Know What To Do encapsulates that, and

Sky Sounds
Available on white opaque 180 gram vinyl limited to 1,000 units Magic Castles are a five-piece psychedelic
rock band from Minneapolis MN. Their sound has been described as minimalistic, dream pop & neo-psychedelic rock. Drawing from a myriad of influences, combining the hazy, “floaty” atmospherics of bands like
Spacemen 3 and Galaxie 500, with the organ-drenched psych of the mid/late 60’s- particularly American
west coast folk-rock, Magic Castles continue to create an altogether unique sound. Since their 2012 release
on Anton Newcombe’s imprint they have toured consistently, building a solid reputation for wall-of-sound
live shows, stretching out their songs to new dimensions. The Magic Castles were the supporting act for
BJM’s east coast tour in 2012. Thrasher Magazine recently used their song “Big Sur” in a skate video alongside Kurt Vile. On April 20th 2014, BJM released a beautiful 12” split single with The Magic Castles for Record Store Day. “Sky Sounds” was recorded
at The Old Blackberry Way Studio in Minneapolis, MN by Neil Weir. Produced by Neil Weir & Jason Edmonds, “Sky Sounds”sees the band reaching new
heights. The album is dense with lush arrangements, jangling backward guitar sweeps, ever deepening melodic layers, symphonic Farfisa tones, and
bright vocal harmonies. A host of guest musicians were included on select tracks, adding cello, viola, flute & trombone.

Swearing At Motorists
A Records
While Laughing, The Joker Tells The Truth
A
Like Iggy Pop’s great lost Nashville record or the legendary demos for the Strokes masterpiece that never
was, this recording is full of catchy courage, significant low notes, bedroom rhythms, hooks, and so on, all
of which make for an impossible amount of pleasure. This Swearing At effort towers heads and squirrels
above whatever that was you were just listening to. --Camden Joy Swearing At Motorists has come a
long way since it’s birth as a poster for a fake band in 1994. A few months after the posters mysteriously
appeared in record stores & music venues around Dayton, Ohio, Dave Doughman jokingly scrawled the
name on a cassette of home recordings that he gave to friends, and the band was officially born. The late
‘90s found S@M releasing a slew of 7” EPs on different labels, and after getting repeated plays from John
Peel and favorable press worldwide, the band landed a contract with the then new label Secretly Canadian.
They released 2 EPs & 4 LPs on SC, including 2000’s Number Seven Uptown & 2002’s This Flag Signals
Goodbye, both of which were named MOJO Magazine’s “Underground Album of the Year” the years they
were released. Swearing At Motorists relocated to Berlin, Germany in 2005, releasing their last LP for Secretly Canadian, Last Night Becomes This Morning the following year before quietly disappearing into the
never-ending Berlin night... 8 years later, the band has resurfaced in Hamburg, Germany, with a new album
titled While Laughing, The Joker Tells The Truth, to be released September 29 on Anton Newcombe’s label
A Recordings Ltd. Co-produced by Dave and Rick McPhail (of the legendery German band Tocotronic), the
album tells the tales of those “lost” 8 years in classic Motorists style.

Lord
Lord is the debut from Seattle-based punks FF, a trio comprised of Claire Nelson, Harley Thompson, and Michael Abeyta. For the entirety of their nascent existence they have existed on the fringes of the fertile enclave
that is the Northwest DIY underground, materializing a singular vision of gloomy, ethereal punk anthems
along the way. For sure, the touchstones are there – My Bloody Valentine, The Wipers, Sonic Youth, the Flying Nun Records cabal – but the collection of songs that compile Lord breakout from the suffocating box
of 90’s revivalism, and offer a profound alternative to an overwhelming culture of nostalgia. Recorded over
the bulk of 2013 with Seattle engineering wiz Dylan Wall (Weed, Craft Spells), Lord is a collection of songs
that capture a band on the cusp of their potency. Lord will be released October 20, 2014 on Couple Skate.

Gone Banana
A thick green mist, a lush chill vibe; after 5 years and countless self-released tapes and CDs, Mega Bog
-- the brainchild of songwriter Erin Birgy -- has complete her best work to date; a swirling pop cloud called
Gone Banana. Influenced equally by the emotional psychedelia of Kevin Ayers and the pop whimsy of Steely
Dan, Banana is a joyous declaration of artistic independence and purpose. Changing line-ups more than
most people change clothes, Birgy is an enigmatic musician and a true weirdo. Alternately a tender songwriting project, a blazin-hot jazz-rock combo, or an open forum for goofy one offs and fragile experimentations, Mega Bog is ultimately whatever Birgy wants it to be on a given day. For Banana, she gathered a
loose group of Seattle’s thriving experimental pop and improvised music scene. Sounding equal parts Ariel
Pink and Prefab Sprout, they rip through 9 hazy burners with a sneaky tightness hidden behind layers of
drizzle and reverb. Birgy’s rich voice croons and bends around the shifting walls of sound, organizing and
refocusing the swirl. An immersive listening experience for oddball pop addicts, peek into the life of a truly
strange soul.

Liquid Light
Third release by this European trio again features their distinctive synthesis of jazz, folk/world, classical,
minimalism and the avant-garde in a program of free improvisation and original compositions. Music that is
deeply sophisticated yet utterly transparent; its roots and feeling go back centuries, its holistic approach is
of today. The vibe continually morphs between driving and ethereal, as acoustic instruments and Pettersen’s
pure, wordless vocals evolve into layered soundscapes. The high-res recording was mixed at Oslo’s Rainbow Studio by legendary ECM engineer Jan Erik Kongshaug. Badenhorst is a member of the Han Bennink
Trio and Tony Malaby’s Novola and was named a rising star on clarinet in the 2013 DownBeat Critics Poll.

Renowned pianist-composer Wayne Horvitz conducts his 14-piece Seattle ensemble in 11 of his classic
jazz/Americana tunes, adapting Butch Morris’s conduction system to deconstruct/recompose them in performance. Horvitz uses numbers and hand signals to draw from the musicians, individually or in continually
shifting small groups, a performance that reinvents and reinvigorates the music in endlessly surprising
ways. The result is a set of dynamic large ensemble jazz compositions with a high degree of freedom at
both microscopic and macroscopic levels; they are also a true pleasure to listen to. Produced by Horvitz in
impeccable high-res sound.

Kim Hiorthoy
Smalltown Supersound
Dogs
On his previous output Hiorthoy has mixed everything from folk, free- jazz, lo-fi electronics, acid, instrumental hip hop and field recordings. On Dogs he has stripped everything down to a minimum, and gone to the
core of his characteristic sound. The album consists of mostly just piano and ambiance, with some beats,
and on some tracks the occasional synth. Dogs is his purest and most beautiful album. Hiorthoy himself
cites Jan Johansson as an inspiration but says that for him the music on this album is still anchored in early
hip hop, sample-based music (though there are no samples on Dogs), and even the simple, cheesy melodies of some 90’s rave tracks. That said, Dogs probably owes just as much to the roots of ambient music:
the minimalist beauty of Harold Budd, or even Eric Satie.

UNO NYC
Aquarian EP - 12”
In the 2 years since Aquarian’s 2012 debut, Obsidian he has kept a low profile with rare appearances at
some of New York’s finest underground parties and the occasional remix for artists he holds in high regard.
It is a less traversed path - one that requires patience and appreciation of a slow build, which at times
may seem at odds with the brooding objectively abrasive sonic palette his music pulls from. His music is
unabashedly North American, bridging the gap between European and American styles. It is unsurprising
when you consider his general love of music ranging from experimental punk and cerebral IDM. At the same
time drawing influences equally from classic 90s detroit techno acts such as Drexcyia and Underground
Resistance and classic dubstep records. With his debut championed by the likes of Fact Magazine, Resident Advisor and Spin, which called “Motherisk” “a 140-BPM banger that balances Drexciyan squelch and
surgically syncopated drum programming with tumbling Amen breaks” Aquarian’s return sees him delve
deeper into break-riden, hardcore inspired techno wrapped in grime and jungle. With devastating swells and
low-ends that challenge some of the most powerful of sound systems the self-titled EP is his most definitive
statement. No glitz, no frills, just brooding, decidedly modern American techno.

Ophelia Slowly
Guy Blakeslee (The Entrance Band) delivers his first solo album in ten years. Produced by Chris Coady
(Beach House, Yeah, Yeah Yeahs), Ophelia Slowly takes a step back from the dense rock sound his LA-based
neopsychedelic trio is known for, delving instead into a sparse, spooky dreamscape where drum loops,
synthesizers, and the occasional acoustic guitar frame his always haunting vocal delivery. Recorded in
New York in the fall of 2013, the album focuses on Blakeslee’s recent descent; wrestling with demons and
angels alike, he has come through it victoriously, expressing the hopeful message of a modern day spiritual.
Recording under his own name for the first time, Blakeslee seems to hint that the intention for this project
is intimate and vulnerable, and as anyone who has caught his recent solo dates opening for Spiritualized
or Cat Power will attest, he delivers on that promise. Blakeslee has always been a re-interpreter of early
American Delta blues. On Ophelia Slowly, his love for the genre is felt not only in his upside down, lefthanded
electric guitar playing, but also in his soulful howl: needing no accompaniment at all, it’s as comfortable in
an Echo Park nightclub as it would a 1920’s Mississippi street corner. Allowing his vocals to appear front
and center, as opposed to his impressive guitar playing, seems to be a decision inspired, in part, by Chris
Coady, who not only recorded Blakeslee’s last solo album, Wandering Stranger (Fat Possum), but was the
first person to record him at all. The two grew-up together in Baltimore and seem to share an unspoken
communication, having collaborated on music together since high school.

Suicide Squeeze
Planet Of Ice
Following the success of Highly Refined Pirates’ forward-thinking guitar gymnastics and Menos El Oso’s
groundbreaking glitch rock, Seattle’s premier pop revisionists Minus The Bear dug into some of rock music’s
most ostentatious years for inspiration for their 2007 album, Planet of Ice. After being out of print on record
since 2010, Suicide Squeeze is proud to reintroduce Planet of Ice’s creative marriage of classic motifs and
modern musical wizardry with a vinyl remaster courtesy of Bernie Grundman.

Chanchfield Presents...
Psychedelic collective from Macon, GA. Waves of texture with catchy melodies that rise up from the primordial stew. Hints of Captain Beefheart, Animal Collective, Gong, and African music. Their live show is a full-on
sensory experience with video projections, costumes, and stuffed animals. There are whoop and hollers,
and they chant together in a language of their own construction. They are all hard working and dedicated
musicians, and one of them even runs a record shop in Macon called Fresh Produce Records. Limited edition 300 copies on vinyl.

Had 10 Dollaz
Any discussion of Cherry Glazerr is going to have a few obvious bullet points. First and foremost, the band
is astonishingly young, with frontwoman/guitarist Clementine Creevy and drummer Hannah Uribe still not
old enough to vote and bassist Sean Redman just barely above the drinking age. And then there’s the fact
that the band’s debut cassette was released by Burger Records. So even if you know nothing else about
the LA trio, you know that they’re young and that they’re a part of the thriving underground community of
stripped-down jubilant rock n’ roll. Release Date: Oct. 28, 2014 7”: SSQ133

Big World
Listening to San Francisco East Bay’s Happy Diving it’s hard to believe that they’ve only been together since
2013. A year ago, friends Matt Berry, Samuelito Cruz, Mikey Rivera, and Matt Yankovitz decided to form a
band after previous projects fell apart. Since then they’ve released a self-titled EP in late 2013 that fans of
Tony Molina, Connecticut’s Ovlov and early Weezer can appreciate. Their debut full-length, Big World, out
worldwide on October 21, 2014, was recorded over a whirlwind two days at The Atomic Garden in East Palo,
CA, with the help of producer Jack Shirley (Deafhaven, Joyce Manor, Whirr). Big World sees the band channeling the energy first displayed on their Self-Titled EP, as well as their deafening and vivacious live shows,
into ten concise, sludgy pop songs. We recommend you listen to this album while road tripping across the
country, but if you don’t have the time to pack up your cares and get away, Big World fits perfectly into a 30
minute lunch break.

Fake Four
Welcome To Success
What is success? And what’s left after the party’s over? Backed by the lush, vivid beats of Canadian producer Factor, Bay Area emcee Kirby Dominant ponders the perils of self-actualization on their third LP together as Paranoid Castle. Are the trappings of success smoke screens for inner turmoil or are they success
itself? Do the drugs and women provide joy or fleeting escape? How long can one keep clawing out at
temporary pleasures in the wake of unresolved anguish? Kirby’s narratives reflect upon these and a host
of other grown man queries. And if the answers don’t come, what does come, is hope. “If the sun comes
back to town, I want to be around,” Kirby sings on the catchy, ebullient hook to “Fear of Missing Out.” He
maintains his sense of humor in the face of being broke on “Laugh Out Loud,” drops a hilarious one-liner
here and there on “Cemetery,” and ands traces of positivity through gritted teeth. Welcome To Success,
the culmination of a 13-year working relationship, showcases two seasoned vets playing on each other’s
strengths and making a grand artistic statement. Kirby continues to sharpen his delivery and singing chops
with each release, often rapping and crooning on the same track and shifting moods between verse and
chorus. Incorporating live instrumentation and samples, Factor’s dynamic beats accentuate the emcee’s
ruminations while making statements of their own. Welcome To Success is grown man music, unafraid to
ask painful questions and wise enough to make you laugh if you don’t like the answers.
