W
elcome to our Spring/Summer 2003 news magazine in
which we celebrate Universal Music Publishing Group’s
continuing successes, including our first-ever win as BMI Pop
Publisher of the Year, as well as BMI Songwriter of the Year
(Brad Arnold of 3 Doors Down).
As the music industry steps up its efforts to combat piracy,
UMPG is not only supporting legislative and legal efforts to
combat this problem, but our artists and songwriters are
speaking out and are featured in the
beginning of our news magazine. In the
face of weakening mechanical income,
UMPG is also aggressively stepping up
its sync licensing activity to record
results and proactively pursuing other
revenue streams, such as ringtones and
karaoke licensing. Of course, we're continuing to sign hit acts and are excited by
the record-breaking success of artists
such as 50 Cent, who as of this writing
may be the biggest sales success story
of '03, and we congratulate Rondor on the amazing worldwide
success of Avril Lavigne. We also still practice that good old art
of songplugging, with our songwriters featured on such major
releases by Celine Dion, Kelly Clarkson, Christina Aguilera, as
featured in our Nashville spotlight.
Keep a lookout for the launch of our new SynchExpress.com
website which is scheduled to launch shortly. It will augment
our highly successful new website - www.umusicpub.com,
which has already received more than 155,000 unique industry visitors since launching!

VANESSA CARLTON:
LAMONT DOZIER:
"I'm all for getting a taste of
something before you buy it,
but when it becomes more
than a taste and people begin
hoarding the entire work, it
becomes piracy which results
in a system in which artists
are not being rewarded for
their works. Works which

"The business as we have
known it has changed with

seen my income drastically
reduced, and it is frightening

RIVERS RUTHERFORD:
"The average songwriter has
to be very fortunate to make
any money at all from his
craft. Illegal internet downloads significantly reduce the
income of people who are
not making millions from
touring, t-shirt sales etc., but
merely trying to make a

can literally make it impossible for a songwriter to support himself with his craft."

began taking everything they
wanted that looked cool, and

Pretty crazy, right? That's
how we feel about the piracy

We love our fans and we
appreciate the love, but don't
steal from us, support us...”

Creative Affairs, Kent Earls, is wasting no time
in making a name for himself as a top songplugger. He has scored many hits from the catalogue. Many of Nashville's biggest stars, as well
as A&R consultants around the world, make
Kent their first stop in search of that magic
song. Kent has recently scored hits with Brooks
& Dunn, Andy Griggs, Emerson Drive, and
Marco Borsato. UMPG Nashville’s Whitney
Williams, has also established herself as a premier songplugger. Her recent successes include
cuts by Faith Hill and Tim McGraw, as well as
top chart recordings by Trisha Yearwood,
Martina McBride and Jessica Andrews.
Whitney's songplugging talents have also
resulted in cuts for top film projects including
The Banger Sisters (Fox Searchlight), and
Someone Like You (Fox) starring Ashley Judd.
Two other songplugging stars in the making,
Katie Dalton & Cory Gierman, round out the
Creative staff.
With the breadth of the Nashville writer's
roster and the expertise of UMPG staff, don't be
surprised to hear from one of these great songpluggers as they continue to revive this lost art
on a worldwide basis.

Don McLean’s Songs
Speak To A New Generation
In his fourth decade as a singer, songwriter, and performer, the name Don McLean continues to be known in every country on earth because of his legendary songs. His composition “American Pie” is ranked by the RIAA as one of the top five greatest Songs of the 20th
Century and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2002. In 2000 Madonna’s
cover of the standard shot to the tops of charts around the world, reaching No. 1 on the
Billboard Dance Chart. “In my career, I’ve received many gifts from God and finally I got a
gift from a Goddess,” says McLean, who thinks her version was “terrific.” “Now with two hit
versions, her version can end up being licensed for synch uses as well as mine. She did a
wonderful thing for me.”
“American Pie” has had more than three million broadcast performances. It first went
to No. 1 in 1972 on both the U.S. AC and Pop charts. Today the song and many other Don McLean classics such as “Vincent
(Starry, Starry Night),” “Wonderful Baby,” “Castles In The Air,” “Dreidel,” “And I Love Her So,” continue to receive mass exposure
through uses in advertising, film and TV. In 2002, “American Pie” was featured as part of Chevy print
and TV advertising campaigns, which are geared around songs which mention Chevy or Chevy products in the lyrics. The 60-second television spots include live concert footage of the original artists
performing the works and features McLean along with Elton John, The Beach Boys and Prince.
McLean says it was finally the right kind of use for this special tune.
“Myself and Elton, boy I was floored when they
came up with that! I thought, ‘What a great thing for

(Starry, Starry Night),” was most recently recorded by
Josh Groban for his debut album. “One of the biggest songs on Josh Groban’s
record is “Vincent,” and it’s a key song and they’ve sold millions.” McLean says George Michael is
also recording his song, “The Grave.” Some of his favorite cover versions of his tune, “And I Love
You So,” were recorded by Elvis Presley, Perry Como, and Johnny Mathis.
Today Don McLean continues to tour and thrill audiences around the globe. He’s currently working on another album, promoting his new website www.AmericanPie.com and excited about a new
CD, The Legendary Don McLean, which was released in March by EMI-Capitol.
