Gospel living and generous for Christian service.
Give me the strength to share with others who are in need

We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

John the Baptist was the son of Zachary, a
priest of the Temple in Jerusalem, and
Elizabeth, a kinswoman of Mary who visited
her. He was probably born at Ain-Karim
southwest of Jerusalem after the Angel
Gabriel had told Zachary that his wife
would bear a child even though she was an
old woman. He lived as a hermit in the
desert of Judea until about A.D. 27. When
he was thirty, he began to preach on the banks of the
Jordan against the evils of the times and called men to
penance and baptism "for the Kingdom of Heaven is close
at hand". He attracted large crowds, and when Christ came
to him, John recognized Him as the Messiah and baptized
Him, saying, "It is I who need baptism from You". When
Christ left to preach in Galilee, John continued preaching
in the Jordan valley. Fearful of his great power with the
people, Herod Antipas, Tetrarch of Perea and Galilee, had
him arrested and imprisoned at Machaerus Fortress on the
Dead Sea when John denounced his adultrous and
incestuous marriage with Herodias, wife of his half brother
Philip. John was beheaded at the request of Salome,
daughter of Herodias, who asked for his head at the
instigation of her mother. John inspired many of his
followers to follow Christ when he designated Him "the
Lamb of God," among them Andrew and John, who came
to know Christ through John's preaching. John is
presented in the New Testament as the last of the Old
Testament prophets and the precursor of the Messiah. His
feast day is June 24th and the feast for his beheading is
August 29th.
Did you know that St. Anthony’s is the ONLY Catholic
church in the Fresno area that broadcasts the Sunday
Mass? We do, every Sunday on IMMACULATE HEART
RADIO (1250AM) at 11:00am. So if you are unable to
attend Mass, please tune in and listen along with us.
FATHER you call each one of us by name and ask us to
follow you.
Bless your church by raising up dedicated and generous leaders
from our families and friends who will serve your people as
Sisters, Priests, Brothers, Deacons, and Lay Ministers.
Inspire us as we grow to know you,
and open our hearts to hear your call.
We ask this in Jesus name
Amen.
Jesus is the way, the truth and the life: the “narrow
gate” that we must enter through in order to be
saved. Invite the Lord into your marriage and let
Him strengthen, renew and rekindle your marriage
sacrament.
Attend a Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekend!
The next weekend will be held October 25-27, 2013, at the
Saint Francis Retreat Center in San Juan Bautista,
California.

Aprendemos a

PAUL’S FIRST PRAYER FOR THE EPHESIANS: 1:17-19
I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you
come to know him, so that, with the eyes of your heart enlightened, you may know what is the hope to which he has
called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance among the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of
his power for us who believe, according to the working of his great power.
CHARISMS
(from the Greek charis=gift,
grace, favor, charm): a name
for the gratuitous gifts of the
Holy Spirit as they are
described, for example, in 1
Corinthians 12:6ff; the gift of
healing, miraculous powers,
prophecy, speaking in tongues,
and the gift of interpreting
them, wisdom, knowledge,
firmness in faith, and so on.
Also included are the seven
gifts of the Holy Spirit; there
are special gifts for governing,
administering, performing
works of charity, and
proclaiming the faith.
What does it mean to say: I believe in the Holy Spirit?
To believe in the Holy Spirit means to worship him as God just like the Father
and the Son. It means to believe that the Holy Spirit comes into our hearts so
that we as children of God might know our Father in heaven. Moved by God’s
Spirit, we can change the face of the earth. [683-686]
Before his death, Jesus promised his disciples that he would send them “another
Counselor” (Jn 14:16) when he was no longer with them. Then when the Holy Spirit
was poured out upon the disciples of the original Church, they learned what Jesus had
meant. They experienced a deep assurance and joy in their faith and received particular
CHARISMS;
in other words, they could prophesy, heal and work miracles. To this
day there are people in the Church who possess such gifts and have these experiences.
What role does the Holy Spirit play in the life of Jesus?
Without the Holy Spirit, we cannot understand Jesus. In His life the presence
of God’s Spirit, whom we call the Holy Spirit, was manifest in a unique way.
[389-691, 702-731]
In Jesus Christ, God himself
was made and allowed us,
so to speak, to cast a
glance at the intimacy of God
himself. And there we see
something totally unexpected:
… The mysterious God is not
infinite loneliness, he is an
event of love ...The Son who
speaks to the Father exists,
and they are both one in the
Spirit, who constitutes, so to
speak, the atmosphere of
giving and loving which makes
them one God.
POPE BENEDICT XVI,
Vigil of Pentecost 2006
It was the Holy Spirit who called Jesus to life in the womb of the Virgin Mary (Mt 1:18),
endorsed Him as God’s beloved Son (Lk 4:16-19), guided Him (Mk 1:12) and enlivened
Him to the end (Jn 19:30). On the Cross, Jesus breathed out His Spirit. After His
Resurrection, He bestowed the Holy Spirit on His disciples (n 20:22). At that the Spirit
of Jesus went over to His Church: “As the Father has sent me, even so I send you” (Jn
20:21).
Under what names and signs does the Holy Spirit appear?
The Holy Spirit descends upon Jesus in the form of a dove. The first
Christians experience the Holy Spirit as a healing ointment, living water, a
raging storm, or a flaming fire. Jesus Christ himself speaks about the
Counselor, Comforter, Teacher, and Spirit of Truth. In the sacraments of the
Church, the Holy Spirit is bestowed through the imposition of hands and
anointing with oil. [691-693]
The peace that God established in His covenant with mankind after the flood was
indicated to Noah through the appearance of a dove. Pagan antiquity, too, considered
the dove to be a symbol of love. And so the early Christians understood immediately
why the Holy Spirit, the love of God in person came down in the form of a dove when
And no one can say
“Jesus is Lord” except by
the Holy Spirit.
1 Cor 12:3b
Jesus allowed himself to be baptized in the Jordan. Today the dove is recognized
worldwide as the sign of peace and as one of the great symbols for the reconciliation of
man with God. (cf. Gen 8:10-11).
