How Beaver County was named
The name “Beaver” was given to the county from the stream and
town called at the time of its earliest settlers, and the town had been
named for the stream. As to the origin of the name of the stream itself, we need not be in any doubt. It was a translation into English
of the Indian word for beaver, the much-prized animal after which
the local Indians had named the stream. The Delawares called the
stream Amockwi-sipu, or literally, “beaver stream.” They gave this
name to the creek because of its being a favorite home of the beaver.
River), and the English when they arrived, called it the same name.
Before the mapping of the town and outlets at the mouth of the
stream, under the Act of September 28, 1791, the point was known
by the Indian names of Sawkunk and Shingoe’s Town, later by the
English as “the old French town.” Later it was called McIntosh, from
the fort there and the town that was created by legislative action
was called Beaver. And it was determined to be county seat of the
new county in its beginning stage of development. Thus, it was natural that when the time came for the creation of the county, it should
receive a name associated with the most important stream and locality belonging distinctively to it’s territory, and was accordingly
called Beaver.
The French, who were the first whites to reach this region, merely
translated the Indian name for the stream calling it, as we have
learned from a map in Pouchot’s memoirs, River au Castor, (Beaver

This annual event held in the rivertown
of Bridgewater will be held August 19-21.
The event is crammed full of activities,
such as the Children’s Fishing Derby, drag
boat racing, a cake walk, a chicken wing
and hot dog eating contest, and the
ever-popular milk drinking contest.
And what would a Beaver County
festival be without music? Local bands
fill the air with a variety of music ranging
from Celtic to Southern Rock. Also
included at the event is a children’s area,
especially designed for the little
members of the family. They will be able
to enjoy face painting, a balloon artist,
and bouncers, just to name a few.
Food vendors will line Riverside Drive
for your festival dining pleasure, ranging
from hot dogs to chicken or rib dinners
can be found. Desserts will also be available for those with a sweet tooth.
As the festival name implies, it is a
regatta and boats will come from all
parts of the country to compete for cash
prizes. Drag boats will thunder down the
Beaver River at speeds in excess of 170
miles per hour, leaving you in awe of
their sheer power and your eardrums
ringing.
Some more relaxed boaters will take a
slower pace in the Anything That Floats
Race. This is a competition where folks
can fabricate a boat (or some type of
floating device) and race against other
entrants to the finish line. It must be
human powered, as no engines are
allowed. This event is one of the highlights of the festival and more often than
not, has some of the entrants capsizing
or sinking, much to the delight of the
observers on shore.
Boaters coming in from the tri-state
area will find plenty of mooring areas at
more than six local marinas, along with
some public docking located a short
distance away.
The motto of the Beaver County River
Regatta is “Family, Friends and Tradition.”
Admission to all the events is free and we
hope you can come out and enjoy it this
year.
