South Central Conference of Seventh-day Adventists 63rd Camp Meeting ~ June 5-13, 2009 Oakwood University Campus, Huntsville, AL Welcome Camp Meeting 2009 Benjamin P. Browne President Our theme for this Camp Meeting is “The Temple of God.” II Corinthians 6:16 states, “And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.” This text informs us that God wants us to be His temples. A temple in this context is a dwelling place for the presence of God. I would like to suggest that we can better understand what it means to be a “Temple of God” by reviewing the study of the Sanctuary. As the presence of God was resident in the Sanctuary of the Old Testament, God desires His presence to dwell in us as His temples. Dana C. Edmond Executive Secretary One purpose of this Camp Meeting is to remind us that we are God’s temples. Every article of furniture that was in the Sanctuary is represented in our body temples. This Camp Meeting we will review the furniture in the Sanctuary and relate each article to ourselves as “The Temples of God.” During Camp Meeting 2005, we focused on the theme “More About Jesus.” In 2006, we journeyed from “Creation to Re-Creation.” At Camp Meeting 2007, where we reviewed the history of the Conflict of the Ages, we focused on “Getting Ready for Eternity.” During Camp Meeting 2008, we reviewed “The Revelation of Jesus Christ” as presented in the Book of Revelation. The intent of Camp Meeting 2009 is to remind ourselves that we are “Temples of God” as we study the subject of the Sanctuary. Philip Palmer Treasurer My prayer, my goal and my aim is that we be “Temples of God,” dwelling places for the Divine Presence. God wants you to be His dwelling place. What an honor to be a residence for the presence of God. Your servant, Elder Benjamin P. Browne, President n 2009 South Central Conference 63rd Campmeeting Theme Song “Lord Prepare Me To Be A Sanctuary” by John W. He is a graduate of Oakwood University in Huntsville, AL, in 2003 with a Bachelors of Arts degree in Theology. While at Oakwood, he served as USM Social Vice three years and organized the married student council, also he served as a pastoral intern to Dr. James Doggette at the Madison Mission SDA Church, Madison, AL. He continued his academic pursuits for the Masters of Divinity degree at Andrews University Theological Seminary, Berrien Springs, MI. In 2006, he received an assignment in the South Central Conference. While at the Seminary, Pastor Hewlett served as a pastoral intern, Niles Philadelphia SDA Church, Niles, MI, Dr. Trevor O’Reggio, pastor. He is married to the former Stephanie Y. Conrad of Durham, NC who was his High School sweetheart. They have just celebrated their 19th year in marriage and are excited for what God continues to do. They have three lovely daughters Brittani 16, Tiffani 12, Courtni 6, and expecting their fourth gift from God, a son to be born in August. Upon his arrival to the Selma/Thomasville district, there has been a significant increase in church and spiritual growth. With the Lord’s leading each church is involved with starting new and continuing previous renovation programs. Pastor Hewlett conducts evangelism yearly and God’s hand moves mightily. He has also had the privilege of leading many persons to a saving relationship with Jesus Christ. Pastor Hewlett approaches his ministry from a holistic perspective, which leaves no doubt in the individual that God is truly in control. Pastor Hewlett not only serves his church but also the community in the following capacities: Community Youth and Family Advocate, special assistant to the Superintendant of Education of Selma, AL, President of the Moss Point Neighborhood Association, and currently serves on the advisory board for the local Ministerial Alliance. Along with pastoral duties Pastor Hewlett enjoys meeting people, sports and peaceful family time. One of his greatest desires is to meet Jesus in Heaven with his family, knowing that he has done God’s will.n 14 n 2009 South Central Conference 63rd Campmeeting Ordinand Pastor DeJuan Nathaniel Knight New Jerusalem SDA Church, Radcliff, KY Calvary SDA Church, Campbellsville, KY P astor DeJuan Nathaniel Knight was born on November 7, 1978 in Louisville, KY to Willie and Francis Knight. The youngest of two sons, he was raised in the semirural community of Crestwood, KY, with his older brother, Kris Knight. He attended the Pewee Valley Junior Academy for the first eight grades (attending Louisville Junior Academy for part of his 7th and 9th grade), he graduated from South Oldham High School in 1997. At the age of 18, he matriculated to Oakwood University, where he graduated with degrees in International Studies (2001), and Ministerial Theology (2003). He was privileged to travel to Nairobi, Kenya to preach in one of many evangelistic series that were sponsored by the Quiet Hour and Pastor Robert Folkenberg, 45 precious souls were baptized into the Seventh-Day Adventist Church. In 2002, DeJuan entered Andrews University in Berrien Springs, MI where he obtained a Masters of Divinity, 2005. While there, he met the love of his life, Rochelle Knight (maiden name “Browne”). They were married in Palm Bay, FL, July 1, 2007 at Pastor Wintley Phipps’ church. God has blessed DeJuan Knight in his ministry beyond his wildest imaginations. A good friend and co-laborer, Pastor Toussaint Williams called DeJuan to work with him as a Bible worker in the Radcliff area. The Lord blessed Radcliff with three baptisms. Nevertheless, after finishing his tenure in Radcliff, Pastor Knight was invited to work in Campbellsville, KY. God blessed his labor there, attendance tripled, it grew from 10 to 30 people attending regularly. The conference was apprised of what was going on in this remote church. DeJuan was summoned to meet with conference leadership and he was hired. Since that time, with skilled laborers at the Campbellsville church, God has blessed Pastor Knight and the church to move forward with renovation projects: a new kitchen, new bathrooms, new fellowship hall, and a new stage in the front. While at the Radcliff church, the Lord has blessed the beginning stages of construction to the new sanctuary. The Lord has used Pastor Knight and added 29 new souls to the Seventh-Day Adventist Church by baptism or profession of faith with more preparing for baptism very soon, to God be the glory. DeJuan is convinced that his future with Jesus looks brighter than his past. By the grace of God, he is looking forward to doing greater things for God while expecting greater things from God. Ephesians 3:20, “Now unto Him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us.” He asks for your prayers as he and his lovely wife seeks to fulfill God’s will in their lives.n 2009 South Central Conference 63rd Campmeeting n 15 Ordinand Pastor Martin Luther King Lister Brainard Chapel SDA Church, Greeneville, TN Henry Street SDA Church, Morristown, TN P astor Martin Luther King Lister was born June 27, 1982, in New York City as the youngest of four children to Pastor Robert and Mrs. Constance Lister. On the day he was born, Martin came out kicking and screaming. He was destined to be a talker. On August 31, 1991, Martin experienced a new birth and was baptized by his father and the late evangelist Jerry D. Lee. He has since dedicated his life for God’s service. In May 2003, after three years of study, Martin graduated from Oakwood University (Magna Cum Laude) with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Ministerial Theology. He served as Sophomore Class President and as the Executive Vice-President for the United Student Movement. As a scholar, he was inducted into the Phi Eta Sigma and Alpha Chi national honor societies. As a vocalist, he sang in the Aeolians, and the Voices of Triumph. As a student of ministry, he served as a student pastor under the tutelage of Dr. Carlton Byrd and Elder Alexander Lampkin in Nashville, Tennessee. He also studied Greek in its land of origin, and conducted an evangelistic meeting in Jamaica, West Indies, where 200 people were baptized. Martin received a call to the gospel ministry from the South Central Conference of Seventh-day Adventists under the presidency of Elder Joseph W. McCoy. He was sponsored to attend the Andrews University Theological Seminary where he received the Master of Divinity degree in the Fall of 2005. While at Andrews, Martin served as the Executive Vice-President for the Seminary Student Forum, edited and published the devotional book, Turning Points, co-founded Journey, a premier musical group on campus, served as an associate pastor, New Life Seventh-day Adventist Church, Andrews University campus, and completed his field school training under the direction of Dr. Jesse Wilson, Riverside, California. In August 2005, Martin was assigned to serve as the pastor of the Brainard Chapel Seventh-day Adventist Church in Greeneville, Tennessee, and the Henry Street Seventhday Adventist Church in Morristown, Tennessee. At the request of President Benjamin P. Browne, Pastor Lister led a successful effort in 2008 to reopen the Emmanuel Seventhday Adventist Church in Kingsport, Tennessee. The tithes for the district have doubled. The attending membership more than tripled from 30 to over 100. And more than 40 souls have been baptized in this Pentecostal period of the district’s history. Praise God from Whom all blessings flow! In May 2008, he was conferred the Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from the University of Tennessee College of Law. More importantly, December 16, 2007, Pastor Lister married the love of his life, childhood friend, Chavvah Juanice (McCoy) Lister. Chavvah, a gifted singer/songwriter, graduated from Oakwood University with a Bachelors of Arts degree in Communications, and the University of Tennessee with a Masters degree in Communication & Information. Chavvah works in communications and development for the Center for Rural Strategies in Knoxville, Tennessee. The Listers will celebrate another special milestone with the birth of their first child later this year. They look to the day when they will meet their Savior in peace when He comes again.n 16 n 2009 South Central Conference 63rd Campmeeting Ordinand Pastor Peter Seth Yelorda Orchard Park SDA Church, Chattanooga, TN P astor Seth Yelorda was born the second of November in Ann Arbor, Michigan, born the only son of four to Peter and Joan Yelorda, His parents were firm believers in Christian education. In 1999, during his senior year at Midland Adventist Academy, he gave his heart to the Lord, thus beginning his journey into ministry. Along with his parents’ love, Christian beliefs, and teaching, credit for his new journey into ministry may also be given to his English teacher and pastor. It was through their influence, he decided for ministry. From the moment Pastor Yelorda gave his heart to the Lord, God opened the door for him to experience a world of opportunity. Prior to college he spent eight weeks in Portland, Oregon as a Literature Evangelist. As a freshman at Union College, he assisted in directing Collegiate Adventist for Better Living (CABL), as well as coordinating the collegiate Sabbath School class. He transferred to Oakwood College (now University) his sophomore year and joined the National Association for Prevention of Starvation (NAPS) and traveled to Madagascar, Africa for four weeks and witnessed over 50 souls baptized. He participated in many national efforts to feed the poor in Washington, D.C.; Oakland, California; Orlando, Florida; Chicago, Illinois; and Dallas, Texas. While completing his degree at Oakwood, he conducted an evangelistic crusade in Nairobi, Kenya. After graduating from Oakwood in 2003 with a degree in Ministerial Theology, Pastor Yelorda received a call to South Central Conference as a Ministerial Intern, and sent to Berrien Springs, Michigan where he attended Andrews University Theological Seminary. While attending Andrews, Pastor Yelorda worked with Dr. Charles Joseph at the Strafford Memorial SDA, Church, Chicago, Illinois, and Pastor Donald Bedney at Highland Avenue SDA Church in Benton Harbor, Michigan. He completed the Mastors of Divinity degree in 2005. In February 2006, Seth Yelorda began pastoring the Brookhaven, Hazlehurst and McComb Churches in South Mississippi. Through his ministry there he saw significant growth throughout his district, specifically in Brookhaven where the attending membership nearly tripled. He also founded Transforming Young Minds Inc. and taught life skills classes in the public school system while mentoring young men in the juvenile system. In March 2009, he was called to pastor the Orchard Park SDA Church in Chattanooga, TN. Pastor Yelorda firmly believes that God does not just call individuals to pastor churches but to pastor communities. While in Chattanooga he has worked to align his church with local agencies to better reach the community. It is Pastor Yelorda’s desire to be saved when Jesus comes, and for God to use him to prepare souls for that great day.n 2009 South Central Conference 63rd Campmeeting n 17 We are His Temples! Scott, Director Jesus said, “And let them make me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among them. Moreover…make the tabernacle with ten curtains of fine twined linen, and blue, and purple, and scarlet with cherubims of cunning work…”( Exodus 25:8; 26:1). Can you imagine the many hands that went into this work? Men, women and children using their talents, gifts and resources to build God’s dwelling place. What an exciting and exhilarating time as they watched the sanctuary take shape. During this encampment, you can experience a sense of awe as your minds and hearts are directed to the sanctuary as a pattern during your morning devotional time. The women’s ministries department invites you to take a journey through the sanctuary by way of the prayer summit on Thursday from morning to evening worship. The Altar of Incense Prayer Summit will change your prayer life forever.
