Dear Newburg Families and Friends,!
My hope is that everyone made it through Louisville’s Wicked Winter
Storm of 2015 and came out on top! I’d like to open my principal’s
message with the last sentence from Newburg’s Daily Affirmation because
my focus this month is on academic success:! !

Principal’s Message
“At Newburg Middle School, excellence is expected every day and
FAILURE is NOT an option!”
As you receive this newsletter, you should also be receiving your student’s
report card. If you have not received your child’s report card, PLEASE
contact the school immediately. I hope that your student did well and
passed all six classes with strong grades to position himself/herself to be
promoted. !
If your child needs some academic support, we offer Weekly Wednesday
Tutoring until 3:30 PM. If your student is not already staying on
Wednesdays with his/her team of teachers, I encourage you to make
arrangements for your child to stay each Wednesday until 3:30 pm. We
will provide snacks, but not transportation. Receiving extra academic
support on a weekly basis from teachers who already know your student is
a great deal. If needed, please take advantage of this weekly opportunity.
We are here to help our Tigers be successful!!
We also have invited a number of students to stay on Wednesdays for
mandatory re-teaching of concepts. Now this group of students were
given letters explaining the mandatory re-teaching classes, met with
administrators, and letters were also mailed home. If your child
received one of these letters, your student will stay until 4:00 pm
with teachers who are specifically re-teaching missed concepts.
Snacks will be provided, but not transportation. !

Principal’s Message (continued)
In over two decades as an educator, I’ve yet to meet a child’s family who did not want him/her to do well.
Therefore, I need your support to ensure that if academic help is needed, you make arrangements for
your child to stay on Wednesdays. I work among a number of dedicated NMS ROCKSTARS who are
committed to help your child become successful. Please contact me if you have any questions about these
academic interventions.!
Also, every student and family can take advantage of academic supports Brain Pop, Moby Max and
Edgenuity. For login information, please see Mrs. Wilson in the Library. !
As the school year progresses on, we are less than 50 days away from KPREP Testing. WE ARE
GOING TO PERFORM WELL AS A SCHOOL! Remember, “…failure is NOT an option!” Well,
we ARE NOT going to fail! Newburg’s too capable and too knowledgeable NOT to do well on K-PREP
Testing. As principal, I am excited because my ROCKSTAR colleagues and I are starting to see the
capability and knowledge in SO MANY of our students. Let me explain. !
Since the start of the school year, every 6-8 weeks, all Newburg Tigers are given JCPS’s District
Proficiency Assessments in math, reading, science and social studies. These Proficiency Assessments
(PAs) are aligned to our Common Core Curriculum and reiterate concepts taught in your child’s classes.
Just like results from KPREP, students are scored Novice, Apprentice, Proficient, or Distinguished in all

four content areas every 6-8 weeks. PLEASE ask you child about their scores on these Proficiency
Assessments so far this year. If they do not know, PLEASE reach out to your student’s teacher(s)
immediately. All 1,065 of my Newburg Tigers should know their scores. !
As a school, we are moving in the right direction with the academic progress on these PAs. To celebrate
students scoring Proficient, Distinguished, or making IMPROVEMENT on these 6-8 week
proficiencies, we have developed the VIP Line. Please speak with your child about Newburg’s VIP
Line! We kicked off the first VIP Line on February 10th and it was VERY successful. Ultimately, I’d love
for all 1,065 Newburg Tigers to go through the VIP Line!!
Again, you should be in receipt of your student’s report card, but if your child needs academic support,
PLEASE reach out to us. We are here to help because, “…failure is NOT an option!”!
Thank you for your continued support,!
!
Mrs. Nicole Adell!
Happening at Newburg
Boy Scouts
We have eleven boys in Troop 491 —
Newburg’s (and JCPSs) first ever Middle
School Boy Scout Troop. Our first
meeting as a troop is March 5th.
Currently we are selling Camp Cards for
$5.00 each to raise money for summer
camp. These cards contain discounts to
many local businesses, including Kentucky
Kingdom & Hurricane Bay, DQ, Kroger,
Zaxby’s, Bass Pro Shops, Ken Towery’s,
Interstate Batteries, Hucks, Quest
Outdoors, Louisville Bats, Hardees, Sonic
and White Castle. You will realize your $5
cost immediately at any one of these
locations! Support Troop 491 and buy a
2015 Camp Card from any of our Scouts,
or at the Bashford Manor Kroger as they
have agreed to let us sell the cards at their

Boxtops
We continue to receive funds from your
simple act of clipping boxtops and sending
them in with your student. This money is
spent directly on the students and we
thank you! Please continue to collect and
turn your boxtops in to Newburg. They
can be found on many, many items. !

Rockstar of the Month!
I remember the first time I met Mrs. Lisa Fossett.
It was early August
2013. We sat in my
office and during our
conversation, I asked
Mrs. Fossett, “Why
Newburg?” Mrs.
Fossett went on to
explain that she had
remained at Newburg
for 16 years because of
the LOVE she held
for Newburg. Mrs.
Fossett spoke of the
early years of
Newburg’s orchestra
program and how it had evolved into a
Distinguished Ensemble. Right then and there, I
was impressed by Mrs. Fossett’s dedication and
commitment to BUILD one of the BEST
PROGRAMS at Newburg Middle School and
Newburg News, Issue 2
February 25, 2015
within our district. When she spoke of how she
works to develop eager students into musicians,
she had a smile on her face the entire time. I
knew right then, Mrs. Lisa Fossett was a
ROCKSTAR. I knew right then that she was in
this profession for the RIGHT reasons – our
students!!
When you enter Mrs. Fossett’s classroom,
NEVER do you find her sitting down (unless she’s
accompanying students on the piano). Mrs.
Fossett is up and moving, has a lot of energy, holds
high expectations for all of her students, and is
fair and consistent. There is no instructional time
wasted in Mrs. Fossett’s classroom. The
atmosphere is also one of mutual respect between
teacher and students. Having an inviting
atmosphere is vital and Mrs. Fossett makes sure
that’s the case in her classroom. One student
recently described Mrs. Fossett as, “A teacher who
knows her stuff. I mean, she makes us play ALL
the time, but that’s not a bad thing, she just wants
us to get better!”!
Another attribute of ROCKSTAR Fossett’s life
that’s worth celebrating is that she’s a loving wife
and mother. The mere mention of her son Noah,
makes her day! Noah is also loved by the
Newburg Family and recently performed with the
Newburg Orchestra during the 2014 Winter
Concert. !
Again, there are some educators who are in the
wrong profession, Lisa Fossett is NOT one of
those educators. She loves our students, she is a
team player, and she is dedicated to Newburg
Middle School. I am GRATEFUL to call Mrs.
Fossett my colleague and friend. It is with
HONOR that I acknowledge Mrs. Lisa Fossett as
Newburg’s ROCKSTAR of the Month for March
2015! Congratulations!!!!!

relationships to solve multi-step ratio and percent
problems such as simple interest, tax and
markups. During this 6 weeks, the students may
use a basic calculator for their homework. !
Cub Scientists have successfully built and
sustained organisms in aquatic and terrestrial
habitats. We observed changes within
populations and are learning more about the life

Saber Tooth parents and grandparents are
the best! We appreciate all those who
volunteered for our recent trip to the
Muhammad Ali Center and Kentucky
Center for the Arts to see “And In This
Corner … Cassius Clay,” in the Stage One

Not for one minute was School at the Zoo
Week hindered by frigid temperatures.
Students learned about many ecosystems
through fun activities and hands-on
lessons. Additionally, they observed or
met face-to-face with animals, studied
about their structures, habitats and
adaptations. Once again, we send a big
shoot out to all of the parents who spent a
day or three chaperoning at the Zoo.
Special thanks to Mrs. Marsha Duffield
(Ms. Molly Duffield’s mother) who is our
volunteer extraordinaire!!

In Social Studies, we have done some
wonderful work in improving our writing.
We have ben working on the CER (claim,

this will help improve our overall test
scores when it comes to essay/ERQ type
questions. We will continue working on
US History from the 1820s up to the start
of the Civil War. We are proud of the
great job students have done in improving
their accuracy in answering multiple
choice type questions. We work on this
everyday in our warm ups. Parents,
please assure that your students study
their Social Studies warm ups every day.
They will have a 5-question quiz every
Friday over the warm up questions from

primarily on comparing multiple texts
regarding the same topic. Students have
read an article, diary entry, and act from a
play about Anne Frank. They have also
discussed the historical aspects of her
story and looked for primary sources of

Serious Virus
Parents! Please be aware of a serious virus
which is attacking the minds of 8th grades
students!
This virus is called
Eightgradeitis! It attacks the brain cells
of some 8 th grade students and causes
them to think that school is over months
before it really is! The results of not
addressing this virus can be devastating!
In order to cure or prevent this virus, it is
important for students to remember that
they must maintain their academic focus
and exhibit excellent behavior until the
end of the school year.!
