Scenes from
last year
President Robert Markel’s Message: SEBC
It’s all the buzz right now with Southeast Building Conference (SEBC) in
Orlando on July 17th and 18th. If you’ve ever wanted to see the newest
products in construction, or put some of the products to work before buying
them, this is the place for you.
There is a vast amount of educational classes, workshops and seminars. If
you still need CEUs, you will have the opportunity to earn credits for your
contractor’s license.
One of my favorite reasons for going is meeting other builders and associates. The connections you will make will last a life time. You will get the opportunity to
shake hands with today’s legends and tomorrow’s leaders. This conference is a great experience for anyone in the industry to attend.
You have heard me state many times in the past that you have to get involved in the CDBIA
to really get the most out of the association. At SEBC there will be members from across the
state to not only see how other associations work, but to chat about their community and
possibly gain some resources. If you want to be successful in your business, come to
SEBC.
See you in Orlando.
2015 CDBIA President Robert Markel is the owner of Royalty Construction, Inc and can be
reached at 941-628-8038 or email [email protected].
Ensure you are insured
In light of recent news, in which a person misrepresented themself as being a properly
licensed insurance agent and sold bogus policies to a local business, this is a time to
remind you to how to check to make sure your agent is in fact properly licensed to do
business in the State of Florida.
All insurance agents are listed on the Florida Chief Financial Officer’s website. The direct
link to verify an insurance agent is
http://www.myfloridacfo.com/Data/AAR_ALIS1/index.htm
Search for your insurance agent’s name and this site will list their license number and
type of insurance they are licensed to offer. If you do not see your insurance agent’s
name listed, ask them to show you their license and you can search by license
number. In order to offer Property & Casualty insurance, your agent must carry a
General 2-20 License.
As with a contractor’s license, it is important that your agent is properly licensed with the type of insurance
you need coverage for. Just as you cannot hire a roofing contractor to permit plumbing work on a project,
you must do your due diligence to ensure your agent is properly licensed for the insurance they are selling
you. You do not want to find out that you’re uninsured when you go to file a claim and that you have been
taken for a ride.
If you have any questions, or need an insurance agent, please contact the CDBIA office, or visit the CDBIA
directory for a licensed insurance agent.
Wendy Atkinson (Commercial Insurance Advisor with Atlas Insurance) is the 2014 CDBIA Associate Vice
President and can be reached is [email protected] or call 941-552-5048.

Message from Charlotte County Building Official
As many are aware, June 30th began the enforcement of the (2014)
5th Edition Florida Building Code. A list of significant changes to the codes
can be seen by going to the Charlotte County Building Division webpage
or floridabuilding.org. Many of the changes in this code cycle deal with energy efficiency. Hot water heaters and window replacements are a couple
areas to pay particular attention as the efficiencies and installations of
these items have new requirements. A greatly debated blower door and
mechanical ventilation requirement for residential buildings has been delayed for a year due to legislative action.
Please be aware that due to the influx of permitting in the last month, plan
review times frames will be longer to handle the increased load. As these
permits are processed the review times will return to normal so your patience is appreciated. We are glad to report that the County continues to
see steady growth of residential single family homes as the latest report indicates a 50% increase in the
number of permits (year to date) over last year.
Ben Bailey is the Charlotte County Building Official and can be reached at 941-743-1201
