Dit is een kenmerk van een “regiostudie”
(zoals Amerikanistiek)
Waarom Amerikanistiek?
• “Amerika” is voortdurend en zichtbaar aanwezig in ons
dagelijks leven (muziek, sport, kleding, TV, de manier waarop
we ons bedrijfsleven inrichten).
• VS zijn nog steeds onze belangrijkste partner – politiek,
economisch, militair, cultureel.
• Veel misverstanden, vooroordelen en onwetendheid over VS
(zie volgende dia…)
• “Amerika” als spiegel voor Europa
• Nederlandse samenleving heeft grote behoefte aan Amerikadeskundigen die vanuit een wetenschappelijk gefundeerde
kennis kunnen spreken en schrijven.
• Een veelzijdige studie (interdisciplinariteit) die een beroep
doet op creativiteit.
• Uitstekende beheersing van de Amerikaanse Engelse taal.

volwaardige Bacheloropleiding. Als
organisatie maakt het deel uit van de
afdeling “Engelse Taal en Cultuur.”
Je kiest bij studielink daarom eerst voor
“Engelse Taal en Cultuur” in Nijmegen.
Daarna ontvang je een brief waarin je op
kunt geven voor het BA-programma

I
f you were to ask a random person on
the street what they know about Canada, you will quickly find that most
of their knowledge consists entirely of
stereotypes. Hockey, beavers, moose, Maple
Syrup, Canadians are really polite, they say
‘eh’ after every sentence, etcetera. After all,
Canada is featured quite li!le in our daily
lives and history. So when I left in August to
spend half a year in O!awa I was expecting
to be confronted with a Canada that had
absolutely nothing to do with these stereotypes.
Turns out, I was wrong. At least partially so.
Many of the stereotypes we are familiar with
are absolutely true. Let’s begin with the idea
that Canadians are polite. On the very first
day in Canada I was confused, excited and
had no idea where to go. Luckily, friendly Canadians are everywhere and as soon as they
see an obvious tourist with a confused look on
their face they rush to be of assistance.
Canadians are also really approachable. It is
quite normal to have an actual conversation
with a random person on the street or behind
a cash register. It must be noted however that
this is not necessarily the case for the French
parts of Canada. If my experience in Quebec
taught me anything it is that there exists a
rivalry between French and English speaking
Canadians that is not unlike that between
the Brits and the French across the channel.
The Quebecois (which is an awesome name,
I must admit) start their conversations in
French and once they realize you don’t understand a word they are saying, they seem to

put in less of an effort. But all in all Canadians
seem very relaxed and easy-going.
I felt that this was particularly the case for
Canada’s biggest sport, which is of course
hockey. Simply put hockey is huge. It is hard
not to be confronted with it in some way
on a daily basis. It’s constantly on television
channels, newspapers and the radio. And
while everyone of course supports their own
teams, there does not really exist a tense rivalry between fans as is the case with European
soccer. I went to a game between the O"awa
Senators and the Toronto Maple Leafs and I
was quite surprised by the pleasant atmosphere of it all. Fans of both teams sat together and would congratulate each other after
goals. It really is a sport that brings people
closer together. Also, stadium food is amazing.
Which brings me to another amazing thing
about Canada, the food. Now most of you
probably cannot really think of a signature
Canadian dish of the top of your head, and
granted, there are not that many. But one
thing truly stands out and that is this great
thing called poutine. While it literally means
garbage in French, allow me to explain. In
its most basic form it consists of fries, cheese
curds, and gravy. It may sound like a weird
combination, but trust me, it’s be"er than a
‘kapsalon’. What is even be"er is that more
ingredients can be added to this already great
mix. This gives you such great creations as
Triple Bacon Poutine (which feels like instant
heart a"ack), Pulled Pork Poutine, and my
personal favorite, Spring Roll Poutine. The
possibilities are endless.
While O"awa itself can be compared to pre"y
much any other city in America or even some
cities in the Netherlands, if you move away
from the city for about an hour you will
find yourself in some of the most amazing
landscapes you will ever experience. If you
are a fan of nature and the wild Canada will
fill your needs. I spent a weekend watching
whales, spent Thanksgiving at a lake in the
middle of nowhere and will go a national
park filled with deer and moose. Now of
course I could say a lot more aboot Canada
than can fit here, but rest assured, Canada is
worth visiting if you ever get the chance, eh!
