Gurmat Way of Life
First Prakash of Guru Granth Saheb Ji
he compilation of Guru
Granth Saheb marked an
important landmark in the
history of the Sikhs. It
became the sacred scripture
of the new Sikh faith. Which
en-gendered in the Sikhs the
consciousness of being a
separate community and
religion. Guru Granth Saheb
is the embodiment of the
divine knowledge of the
Gurus and other Enlightened
souls. The message enshrined in the hymns of Guru
Granth Saheb is purely
spiritual. They are a source of
divine wisdom and bliss. The
fascinating hymns, chanted in
deep devotion, inspire the
minds of the listeners to lofty
ideals and well up their
spirits. The hymns establish a
deep spiritual unity between
man and God. Guru Arjan
Dev ji himself lovingly sang
these hymns accompanied by
the music created by the
touch of his fingers on the
saranda. This lovely music
flowed from under the dome
of Harimandar and was
absorbed by its walls and the
waters of the surrounding
sarovar. Still today, the
singing of melodious kirtan in
Harimandar Saheb continues,
echoing and re-echoing from
the holiest of the holy shrine.
In 1605 Emperor Akbar
visited Guru Arjan Dev ji at
Amritsar on his return
journey to Delhi. He was very
pleased with the majestic
beauty of the Harimandar. He
was Charmed by the sweet
voice of the Guru and the
delightful melodies to which
the Guru had set the hymns.
HE ex-pressed wonder,
saying that words failed to
convey the fulfillment he had
experienced. He requested
the Guru to secure peace for
his soul. The Guru blessed the
Emperor to dwell in the Name
Divine.
After completion of Guru
Granth Saheb in July, 1604,
Guru Arjan Dev ji installed
the Granth in Harimandar on
August 16, 1604 in a great
ceremonious celebration.
Seating himself at a lower
level, he installed Guru
Granth Saheb on a higher
pedestal, and instructed
everyone to bow before it, not
as an idol, but as a holy
scripture containing God’s
Word. Baba Buddha ji was
honoured as the first Granthi
(custodian) of the Granth
Saheb.
Nothing has made the
Sikh faith more alive and
dynamic than the fact that its
scripture, the Guru Granth
Saheb is in the simple
language spoken by the
people and is available to all
men and women equally for
imbibing and ministering its
instructions. The spirit of
catholicity is one of the most
important aspects of Guru
Granth Saheb: the holy
scripture contains hymns not
only of Sikh Gurus but also of
thirteen saints, belonging to
all castes of Hindus, Five
Muslim divines, One Sikh
Devotee, and twelve bards.
- - - The Message - - In Guru Granth Saheb is enshrined the Holy Word of God. The Holy Word enshrined therein is the heart and soul of Guru
Nanak Dev and the divine saints. The message of Guru Granth Saheb is that of love for God and all humanity.
It brings peace and liberation to the devotees.

Sikhi Sidak - Learning the essence of Sikhi
Creation of Khalsa on the Baisakhi Day of 1699

n response to Guru
G o b i n d S i n g h j i ’s
special invitation to his
Sikhs to come on the
Baisakhi day of 1699,
thousands of Sikhs
assembled at Anandpur.
Guru Saheb had decided to
create the Khalsa that day.
After the morning
prayers, Guru Saheb stood
up and drew his sword; his
face was red and his eyes
shone like fire. Shaking the
sword in his uplifted hand,
he thunderously called out,
“This sword of mine wants
to taste the blood of a Sikh.
Is there any true Sikh of
mine among you who
would offer his/her head?”
At this the whole assembly
was shocked; many grew
pale on hearing such a
strange demand. But the
Guru went on repeating it.
At last, Daya Ram, a khatri
of lahore stood up and
offered himself to the Guru.
The Guru took him into the
ad-joining tent and a little
later, came out with his
sword dripping with blood.
He again called out, “I need
another Sikh who will offer
himself as a sacrifice.” At
this call, Dharam Das, a Jat
of Delhi, Came forward
and offered himself to the
Guru. Guru Saheb also
took him inside the tent and
after a while, again
appeared with his bloody
sword, demanding another
head. In this way three
more Sikhs stood up one
after another and offered
themselves for sacrifice.
One was Mohkam Chand, a
washerman of Dwarka;
another was Himmat Rae, a
water carrier of Jagannath
Puri; and the last one was
Saheb Chand, a barber of
Bidar.
After a while, Guru
Saheb came out with the
five Sikhs dressed
handsomely in fine
uniform and announced
Waheguru ji ka Khalsa
Waheguru ji ki Fateh!!
A trust by the name of
"SikhiSidak" has been
formed with the aim to attain
following goals and objectives:1) Provide facility for learning Gurmukhi.
2) Provide a platform to children to learn to play musical
instruments.
3) Kirtan training by a professional trainer from Jawaddi
taksal.
4) Gurudwara for Meditation
and Simran.
5) Imparting knowledge of
Sikh history.
6) Provide subsidized educational facilities and career
guidance for the needy students.
7) Provide temporary residential facilities for the teachers and the needy students.
8) Provide subsidized social
services like food, clothing,
medical for the needy.
9) To build superior human
character and high moral values in youth.
10) To award prizes, scholarships, certificates of merit etc
to eligible children/students.
11) To pay the fees, cost of
books, equipment and other
necessities, travelling and
stay and maintenance ex-
penses and helping the needy
and deserving students by
other suitable means.
12) To help and assist needy
and deserving patients in
cases of hospitalization in getting the required treatment
from doctors.
13) To conduct festivals, competitions, exhibitions, shows,
etc. and to encourage drawing
and painting, music, debates,
sports and other cultural activities
Monthly Trust meetings will
be held every month at a perdetermined day and time
which would be communicated to all members by
Email or SMS. If a person
wishes to attend a meeting,
he/she should inform the
board of trustees about the
same in advance so that information about the date, time
and venue of next meeting
can be communicated.
Any social or religious activity needs support and encouragement from it's fellow
brothers and sisters. Sikhi
Sidak has initiated an attempt
to create a socio-religious platform where all of us can participate and enrich our lives
by learning the essence of
Sikhi as preached by Guru
Nanak. We are endeavored to
assist the socially and financially weak people from the
society and help in their upliftment by providing them educational trainings and financial support. We need your
support to succeed in these efforts.
The land for construction of
the Gurudwara sahib and the
academy (training center) has
already been bought. We have
already availed services of a
professional lawyer and an architect to help us plan in a
better and legal manner. Our
Trust has been already approved by the charity commissioner of Pune and the has
been granted the registration
number: E-5816. The plan for
construction got approved by
PMC in June 2015 and we are
in the process to start the construction very soon.
We are counting on you to
pitch-in and lend us your helping hand by contributing in
making this vision a reality.
For the ongoing activities of
construction, running the
academy, Gurmukhi and
Kirtan classes etc, we will
need monthly commitments
so that we are able to focus
our attention on our visionary

Ones). He proclaimed that
they will be the nucleus of
the order of Khalsa.
Guru Saheb
initiated the five Sikhs into
the Order of khalsa with a
unique ceremony called
Amrit. In an iron batta
(bowl), he mixed water
with patasay (sugar bubles)
brought by Mata Jito ji, to
fuse bir-ras(elixir of
heroism) and prem-ras
(elixir of love) into one. He
then stirred the signify
their initiation into the
casteless fraternity of the
khalsa. Guru Saheb
changed the names of the
panj piaray to Daya Singh,
Dharam Singh, Mohkam
Singh, Himmat Singh, and
Saheb Singh. Since then
the word ‘Singh’, meaning
lion, is always suffixed to
the first name of all males
who are initiated by Amrit.
All females who are
initiated by Amrit are given
the surname ‘Kaur ’,
meaning lioness and
princess. From that time on
words, ‘Waheguru ji ka
Khalsa. Waheguru ji ki
fateh’ is the Khalsa
greeting.
The President, S. Sarabjeet Singh, informed that the initiative of Sangat helped them in carrying out
the turban tying activity, in which nearly 30 children and youngsters participated. Free distribution of
turbans were done so as to encourage the next generation to know their virsa.

also known as 'Feelm' (feeling + emotion). Its
focus is on education to promote greater
understanding and appreciation of Sikh history,
art and culture among Sikh community at large.

conducting annualized Sikh Film Festival during
Republic day. All the initiatives are open to general

he personality of Guru
Arjan Dev ji was a
source of spiritual inspiration
to his devotees, among whom
were several Muslims too.
They came to pay homage to
him and seek his blessings.
The Muslim Saint Miah Mir
held the Guru in high esteem.
The Mughal ruler, Emperor
Akbar, also came to pay his
respects to Guru Arjan Dev ji
at Goindwal on November
24,1598. After the death of
Akbar in 1605, Jaharigir ascended the throne. Whereas
Akbar was liberal in his
outlook and gave due respect
to the teachings of all
religions, Jahangir was a
fanatic and would not tolerate
the spread of any other faith in
his kingdom. He looked upon
Guru Arjan Dev ji and his
devotees with hostility and
wanted to suppress their
mission. He was particularly
displeased as some Muslims
had also joined the fold of
Guru Arjan Dev ji.
Guru Ramdas ji had installed
Arjan Dev ji, who was his
third son, as his spiritual
successor, considering him to
be the fittest person to occupy
the Guru's seat. He ignored
the protests of the two elder
sons, Prithi Chand and
Mahadev. They were very
much aggrieved and upset.

Whereas Mahadev calmed
down after some time, Prithi
Chand carried on a virulent
campaign against Guru Arjan
Dev ji. Jahangir's accession to
the Mughal throne provided
him with the opportunity to
intensify his campaign. He
conspired with Chandu, a
Hindu officer of the
Emperor's court, to persecute
Guru Saheb.
Sometime earlier, Chandu's
messengers had proposed to
him the marriage of his
daughter to Guru Arjan Dev's
son, Hargobind. Hearing this,
Chandu passed a contemptuous
remark toward the Guru:
"This proposal amounts to
fixing an ornamental tile of a
p a l a c e i n t h e g u t t e r. "
Nonetheless, due to pressure
from his wife and relatives,
Chandu conceded to the
proposal, and sent his
messengers to the Guru with
the proposed marriage. But,
upon coming to know of
Chandu's arrogant remarks,
the Sikh sarigat of Delhi
requested that the Guru
decline the proposal, which
he did.
Chandu. became infuriated at
the rejection. Both he and lso
to erase hymns in the Granth
Prithi Chand worked in
unison and poisoned the ears
of Jahangir against Guru
Arjan Dev ji. They reported to
Jahangir that the Guru had
blessed the Emperor's rebel
son Khusrau. Jahangir was
already looking for an
opportunity to put an end to
the ever-widening influence
of Guru Arjan Dev ji which
had resulted in a vast increase
in his following. He
summoned Guru Saheb to
Lahore in May, 1606, and
accused him of helping his
enemy Khusrau. He ordered
the Guru to pay a fine of two
hundred thousand rupees, and
also to erase hymns in the
Granth
Saheb, which were opposed
to the Hindu and Muslim
religions. The Guru refused to
pay the fine, saying that he
had done no wrong and that
there were no hymns in the
Granth Saheb opposing any
religion. Upon this Jahangir
ordered Murtaz Khan, the
Governor of Lahore, to
confiscate all of Guru Saheb's
property and torture him to
death. Murtaz Khan entrusted
this job to Chandu, who took
this opportunity to exact his
revenge.
Guru Arjan Dev ji was cruelly
tortured by Chandu. He was
seated on burning-hot iron
plates, and red hot sand was
poured on his body. This was
followed by immersing his
blistered body in a big cistern
of boiling water. When the
devoted Muslim Saint Miah
Mir approached him with the
request that he be permitted to
see the Emperor Jahangir to
reverse his decision and release the Guru, Guru Arjan
Dev ji refrained him from
doing so by saying:
Tayra kee-a mitha lagai,
Har nam padarth Nanak
mangai.
Sweet is Thy Will, O God.
Devotion to Thee is the only
boon I seek.
To inflict even more pain, he
was then made to have a dip in
the cold waters of the river
Ravi. On May 30,1606, Guru
Arjan Dev ji took a dip in the
river Ravi and never came
out. Gurdwara Dera Saheb in
Lahore stands as a monument
to the sacred memory of the
holy Guru Arjan Dev.
Guru Arjan Dev ji refused to
give up his faith to save his
life. His martyrdom proved to
be a turning point in the
history of the Sikh faith. From
a group of devotees hitherto
given mainly to devotion and
peaceful activities, the Sikhs
were gradually transformed
into an organised and wellknit community, ready to take

to a synthesis between bhagti
and shaktl. Guru Arjan Dev ji
was the first Sikh Guru, who
by his martyrdom lent to
Sikhism a strength and
solidarity that it had never
known before.
Guru Arjan Dev ji carried the
Light of Guru Nanak Dev ji
during his Guruship from
1581 to 1606.
